00:01:00I was born and I was raised in that apartment.
00:01:06It's like a very typical communist apartment.
00:01:12I've been living in that apartment for 22 years.
00:01:19My grandmother cherishes a lot.
00:01:22She doesn't want to sell it.
00:01:24She just wants to spend her last days in that apartment.
00:01:29I've been living in that apartment.
00:01:58I used to go to the countryside very often.
00:02:05It was amazing.
00:02:08On the road, we were listening to Depeche Mode.
00:02:12And that was the first time that I heard about their music.
00:02:22Until the age of 12 and 13, I didn't really understand the lyrics.
00:02:28Like, I didn't really understand what it was actually saying.
00:02:33But it was really good.
00:02:36And that's how I started to know their music.
00:02:43My stepfather used to watch their concerts on his computer.
00:02:48So he was the person who showed me who they are.
00:02:52Like, that's Dave.
00:02:54That's Martin Gore.
00:02:56We used to, like, admire Depeche Mode together.
00:03:02I'm really, really glad that I'm going to see them.
00:03:06I'm really, really glad that I'm going to see them.
00:03:34Hi.
00:03:35Qué chorritos.
00:03:37¿Cómo están de lindos?
00:03:39Hola, mi amor.
00:03:40¿Cómo estás, Corben?
00:03:42Bien.
00:03:43¿Te cortaste el pelo?
00:03:44Sí, un poquito.
00:03:46Quedaste muy bien.
00:03:47Hola, Milita.
00:03:49Hola, mam.
00:03:49Mira, estoy acá con Eleven.
00:03:52Say hello, Eleven.
00:03:54Say hello, Eleven.
00:04:00Me hacen mucha falta.
00:04:02Y a ti también, ¿cierto?
00:04:03The kids went to live to Miami about two years ago, a little over two years.
00:04:09And it's been the hardest thing that's ever happened to me.
00:04:17Knowing that your kids are growing up so rapidly.
00:04:23And they're doing it far away from you.
00:04:26And you're missing all these very important moments, you know?
00:04:33I didn't meet my dad until, like, maybe ten years ago.
00:04:37So, to me, being a dad was a very big thing.
00:04:41Even when I was a kid, all the other kids were thinking about,
00:04:44oh, I'm going to be a soccer player and I want to be an astronaut.
00:04:47And I just knew that I wanted to be a dad and I wanted to be a good dad.
00:04:54We talk at least once a week on FaceTime or some other way.
00:05:02And I'm always, like, you know, listening to whatever's happening in their lives.
00:05:10It's not the same as having them here, you know?
00:05:12And I try to be a parent from a distance as best as I can.
00:05:18I'm glad that they have a really good mother.
00:05:21So, I am at ease knowing that they are with her.
00:05:27But still, I would like to be more present, of course.
00:05:31And every time we're together in person,
00:05:34I try to take advantage of it as much as I can.
00:05:42We stay connected with our dad because of the band.
00:05:46And also because we love him and stuff.
00:05:48But, like, this band is what brings us here to Bogota most of the times.
00:05:53And, like, it's just so much fun with him.
00:05:59We don't know what we would be doing if, like, this band didn't.
00:06:03Like, we wouldn't be in Bogota right now.
00:06:07We wouldn't be in Miami.
00:06:27Someone to hear your prayers.
00:06:30Someone who cares.
00:06:37Your own personal Jesus
00:06:44Someone to hear your prayers.
00:06:48Someone who cares.
00:06:52Your own personal Jesus
00:07:11Come on, let's hear it.
00:07:16Your own personal Jesus
00:07:42For anybody in the Western world,
00:07:46You just go and do your thing.
00:07:48But here, I wasn't allowed to choose.
00:07:50I was just given the information, the music, the books, the literature,
00:07:55that was approved by the party.
00:07:57This is how it was.
00:08:08On the radio, everything was super controlled.
00:08:12On the radio, everything was super controlled.
00:08:13I don't know what was the criteria for approval.
00:08:15I think that they would have to be very soft.
00:09:23Je ne me souviens pas quelle chanson, c'est «World in My Eyes» ou «Personal Jesus».
00:11:56Des strophes ?
00:11:57Et de qui l'autre ?
00:12:00Je ne sais pas.
00:12:02Gabriel et de gargamel.
00:12:04Gargamel et Mimouche Gargamel.
00:12:12Tu te l'as.
00:12:13Tu te l'as.
00:12:14Tu te l'as.
00:12:15Tu te l'as.
00:12:15Tu te l'as.
00:12:35I was born in Sycamore, Illinois,
00:12:39which is one of the sort of like far suburbs of Chicago.
00:12:42It was a place where I felt like I never really quite fit.
00:12:45Mom is African-American, my dad's Irish-American.
00:12:49They got married in the 60s.
00:12:52There was a lot of racial segregation.
00:12:54Like at my high school, a bunch of us were going to try out for the cheerleading squad,
00:12:58so a bunch of us made it.
00:12:59Parents complained that there were then too many black kids on the cheerleading squad,
00:13:03and asked for some of us to be kicked off.
00:13:06So there definitely was a lot of racial tension at the school,
00:13:12and it was completely unaddressed.
00:13:14There very much was a vibe of like,
00:13:17if you like hip-hop, you're black, and that's it.
00:13:21And if you're black, then you should only like hip-hop.
00:13:24And if you don't, you're weird.
00:13:26Do you need any help, Mom?
00:13:28There was very much like a very clear dividing line.
00:13:35Because they came about in like the early 80s, right?
00:13:38So it would have been like 82 or 83.
00:13:40Yeah, so that was pretty much really dominated by like the kind of like punk movement
00:13:45and stuff like that.
00:13:46Where you don't have a lot of bands from that specific time period still playing.
00:13:52So it's really interesting to kind of see them kind of come out of that like post-punk
00:13:57alternative movement is a very awesome opportunity to kind of see them conclude that.
00:14:02Oh, I agree.
00:14:03Yeah.
00:14:09Growing up in Brazil in a family of lawyers,
00:14:13whatever they liked, I would like.
00:14:15Whatever they said I should do, I would do.
00:14:19Religion played a very big role in our lives.
00:14:24We all had this idea of how our lives were supposed to be when we grow up.
00:14:31Pretty much it should be get out of high school, go immediately to university,
00:14:35and then get a job, get married, have kids already by the time you're 25.
00:14:44I'm not the typical karaoke, you know, the person from Rio.
00:14:49I was never a fan of going to the beach every weekend.
00:14:53I always thought that my future did not belong there.
00:14:58I started to have my crisis of faith around university.
00:15:04As time went by, I started to realize that it was not going to happen.
00:15:09I was not going to be exactly what my family expected of me.
00:15:15Oh, yeah.
00:15:22Like the loudest, most bestest intro of a record ever.
00:15:27Like the loudest, most bestest intro of a record ever.
00:15:57I actually learned English from watching television shows specifically.
00:16:05But most importantly, the pronunciation, I learned it from music.
00:16:12I really like pain that I'm used to.
00:16:15I don't even know why, but the lyrics are good.
00:16:18But I'm not sure what I'm looking for anymore.
00:16:26I don't even know why, but the lyrics are good.
00:16:34I don't know why, but the lyrics are good.
00:16:50I don't know why, but the lyrics are good.
00:16:52But you're trying to play anyway.
00:16:55I just care why you're breaking all the rules.
00:16:59All the signs that I find have been underlying.
00:17:03Devil's drive on the drive that it's free.
00:30:18A long time ago, their lyrics were very political
00:30:23And this new album, it's like going back to that
00:30:26And, you know, the situation in the world right now
00:30:30It's such that if you're an artist
00:30:34You have to see what's going on
00:30:36And somehow put that into your music
00:30:41So I think it's just a theme that they are coming back to
00:30:45Where's the revolution
00:30:52Come on, people, you let me down
00:31:00Where's the revolution
00:31:06Come on, people, you let me down
00:31:16That's what I love about Depeche Mode
00:31:19It's like, that's the message of their music
00:31:22Life can be moody and life can be dark
00:31:24But at the end of the day, we're still alive
00:31:28And having these emotions, it enhances life
00:31:31And their music also enhances life when you hear it
00:31:35It makes you pay attention to all those little details
00:31:37Your rights are abused
00:31:43Your views refused
00:31:50They manipulate and threaten
00:31:58With terror as a weapon
00:32:05Let's take it till you're stupefied
00:32:12When you're down and see you're on the side
00:32:18Where's the revolution
00:32:24Come on, people, you let me down
00:32:33Where's the revolution
00:32:39Come on, people, you let me down
00:32:48The train is coming
00:32:50The train is coming
00:32:52The train is coming
00:32:54The train is coming
00:32:56So get on board
00:32:58Get on board
00:32:59Get on board
00:33:01Get on board
00:33:03The engine's coming
00:33:05The engine's coming
00:33:07The engine's coming
00:33:08The engine's coming
00:33:10So get on board
00:33:12Get on board
00:33:15Where's the revolution
00:33:21Come on, people, you let me down
00:33:30Where's the revolution
00:33:36Come on, people, you let me down
00:33:44Where's the revolution
00:33:48Come on
00:33:50Come on, people, you let me down
00:33:54Come on, people, you let me down
00:33:55Let's see those hands
00:33:59Where's the revolution
00:34:05Come on, people, you let me down
00:34:13Where's the revolution
00:34:19Come on, people, you let me down
00:34:43One of the reasons I try to stay positive about life
00:34:46is just because, like, I feel like I shouldn't even be here
00:34:57So I got diagnosed
00:34:58with breast cancer
00:35:00in July of 2014
00:35:04And I have a kind of cancer
00:35:07It's called triple negative cancer
00:35:08I had stage three triple negative cancer
00:35:11And it has a high fatality rate
00:35:13So, and also a really high recurrence rate
00:35:15So, um, I asked them if I could take, uh, go on, like, a little vacation with my family
00:35:26Because I thought it was probably going to be, like, the last family vacation
00:35:32Good afternoon, Liz, how are you today?
00:35:34I'm good, I'm good, how are you?
00:35:36I'm good, how's everybody in the family doing?
00:35:38You're all right
00:35:40That's good
00:35:40The chemotherapy they were using
00:35:42How are you doing today?
00:35:43It would burn through my veins
00:35:45Um, but I made a decision to, like, keep going
00:35:48Because they would
00:35:49What they would do is they would give me an ultrasound
00:35:51And they could see that, like, the cancer was starting to shrink
00:35:55It was responding
00:35:56All right
00:35:56Under your tongue, please
00:35:58You know, I finished that
00:35:59Then I had surgery
00:36:01I did seven weeks of daily radiation after that
00:36:04Okay, thank you
00:36:07Every time I went, they knew to put on, like, Depeche Mode songs for me
00:36:13Because you're just sitting there and you can listen to headphones or whatever
00:36:16Or you can have them, you know, have, like, a speaker
00:36:19So they would, they would play different Depeche Mode songs for me every single time
00:36:23And it's weird because someone asked me, they're like, well, why have something you love associated with something so horrible?
00:36:31You know, like, wouldn't that make you
00:36:33To give you bad associations?
00:36:36And I'm like, no, it actually just, you know, I would just pretend I was somewhere else
00:36:43I would just think about, like, okay
00:36:45Like, that's all right, because I'm going to be alive
00:36:47And I'm going to go to another Depeche Mode show
00:37:15Oh my God, I'm going to be alive
