00:01Tonight on Windy City Rehab.
00:04Oh, my God.
00:06What is that?
00:09Two very different houses.
00:11It's so ugly, it's pretty.
00:13A lot of people would come in and literally just got this.
00:16I know.
00:18Two very different clients.
00:20Oh, my. And you bought this.
00:22We want to rent this.
00:23Long-term rental.
00:24This is our first home together,
00:26and we wanted to find a home where we can grow into.
00:28If we wanted to expand our family.
00:31But hey, two projects are better than one, sometimes.
00:35We're scheduled for a clean-up this coming week.
00:39Even with my worst projects on their worst days,
00:42nothing ever looked like this.
00:44This has to be 34 inches.
00:45What?
00:46And if they're tall, it's gonna look really weird to them.
00:48It's gonna look stupid.
00:50What's been happening over the last three months?
00:52So now I feel like I'm getting taken advantage of,
00:54and that's where things just don't sit well with me.
00:57Comment.
00:58Oh, my.
00:59Oh.
01:00But sometimes dreams really do come true.
01:03Very emotional for both of us.
01:05I just...
01:05That's why I love what I do.
01:14I have other clients in Oak Park,
01:16and I've done a few projects in this area.
01:18I keep coming back because I love it.
01:21The homes are old and beautiful,
01:22and the streets are lined with trees.
01:25You get all the perks of the suburbs,
01:26but you can be in the city in 10 minutes.
01:30I love the brick.
01:31Oh, yeah.
01:31That has to stay.
01:32Yep.
01:33Once we paint the house, like, we gotta keep that.
01:35Totally.
01:39We want it to be in Oak Park,
01:40but a lot of these homes are historic and older,
01:42and usually when you walk through the older homes,
01:44the scale is a little bit shorter, so...
01:46They were built for me.
01:47They were?
01:48They were way smaller then.
01:50Yes.
01:51So this home right here is open.
01:53The ceilings, the doorways, I don't have to duck.
01:54It checks all those boxes.
01:56We can live comfortably.
01:57I love how your boxes are...
01:58Totally.
01:58Where do you not have to duck?
02:00Oh, it's a legit concern.
02:02Yes.
02:03Erica and Joe are city livers,
02:05and they're moving to the burps.
02:07They just got married.
02:08They're also seven feet tall,
02:11so I've never felt smaller.
02:13I feel like when people are taller than me,
02:14that I'm younger than them.
02:16Is that weird?
02:17It's beautiful, but...
02:19It needs some love.
02:20Totally.
02:20It needs some new paint.
02:22What's the paint scheme that you see?
02:24I'll write down what mine is.
02:25Okay.
02:26I'm curious if it matches.
02:27So I love a big white house.
02:30I like black doors.
02:31I like...
02:34Yay!
02:35Oh, okay.
02:36Good deal.
02:36Good deal.
02:37That's what I want to do,
02:38is I want to paint the whole house white,
02:40and then I want the trim black.
02:41You...
02:42Oh, my God.
02:43Do like a pretty tree here.
02:44Really hug the house with beautiful bushes.
02:47Cool.
02:48And then you have a real entry.
02:49And then as far as just the porch,
02:51I think we go with black here.
02:52Perfect.
02:54They are phasing their project out,
02:56which is really smart,
02:57especially for first-time homeowners.
02:59You really don't know what you're biting off
03:01until you kind of get into the meat of it.
03:03So phase one is the exterior and the first floor,
03:06which is really the biggest chunk of your budget.
03:09Okay, here we go.
03:13Wow.
03:15Yeah.
03:18And I typically am not a huge fan of this honey color,
03:22but I really like it.
03:23Okay.
03:24Well, I'm glad...
03:24I actually really like it.
03:25Okay, good.
03:25Now, the floors...
03:27I mean, this is not in bad shape at all.
03:28Yeah.
03:28We can refinish this,
03:30and we're not going to go too far from the tones
03:32that are already existing.
03:33Okay.
03:34Because tell me what this room is to you.
03:36This is the hangout family room.
03:38I thought like a green might look pretty in here.
03:41Let's leave the existing trim,
03:43and let's leave the ceiling white.
03:44We'll paint the walls a deep green,
03:46and we'll add seating along these two walls.
03:50I love that a couple like you is buying it,
03:52because a lot of people would come in
03:53and literally just gut this.
03:55I know.
03:56So you have to have a love for old homes
03:57to appreciate it
03:58and then to put the love back into it.
04:01This is our first home together,
04:03and we wanted to find a home
04:04where we can grow into,
04:06and we can put our own touch on it.
04:08Joe and I share a daughter.
04:09She's my stepdaughter, Joe's daughter.
04:12And if we wanted to expand our family,
04:14it's just so nice out here.
04:16I love it.
04:17So formal dining.
04:18Yes.
04:20We're looking to open this up to about 30 inches.
04:22So this wall goes?
04:23This is going to stay,
04:24because behind that's going to be our butler pantry.
04:26Okay.
04:26So this wall's going to stay,
04:27but we're going to open this up into the sunroom.
04:29Got it.
04:30This room is going to be the one everyone talks about.
04:33We'll do a one-of-a-kind mural in here
04:35with a round dining table
04:37and an oversized brass light fixture.
04:39It's going to be a work of art.
04:41You were saying sunroom?
04:42Yes.
04:43Which obviously you get some beautiful light in here.
04:45You've got this beautiful view of the backyard
04:47that's gigantic.
04:48I know.
04:49So what are you guys thinking here?
04:51What's this room?
04:52We're looking to open up this entire wall right here.
04:54We're going to keep about 30 inches right here on the left,
04:57but we're going to open all this up,
04:58put an island here, going into the kitchen.
05:00Okay.
05:01I love it.
05:02Let me see.
05:02The kitchen obviously needs work.
05:04Oh, my.
05:05Well, be prepared.
05:06Just a little bit.
05:06Be prepared.
05:08Ah, here's where it feels dated.
05:10Yeah.
05:12Obviously, this kitchen, nothing can stay.
05:14Nothing.
05:15Nothing.
05:16But it's big.
05:17Right.
05:17That's the cool part.
05:18It's a lot of room.
05:21We're getting rid of all the soffits.
05:23I want to do a dark soapstone countertop on the perimeter
05:25with an apron front sink.
05:28Okay.
05:28Talk to me about tile in the kitchen.
05:32You're reading my mind.
05:33Really?
05:33I died.
05:34So I saw this image of a kitchen and it had butler tile.
05:39What is it?
05:40Black and white.
05:40Oh, the black and white.
05:41Yes.
05:41So that would pull back our black and white theme.
05:43Oh, my God.
05:44I would love to do that.
05:45Erica's just speaking by language.
05:47When she said black and white tile floor in the kitchen,
05:49it was like, I want that.
05:51And I want that because we know that the original wood floors
05:53don't run through the kitchen.
05:54So how do we change that without trying to match it?
05:57Did you buy appliances?
05:58Yes.
05:59We have this really cool oven that it's all black.
06:02Your hoods.
06:03Yes.
06:04Are just so statement pieces like that.
06:07Tell me you didn't buy one yet.
06:09No, we did not.
06:09Good.
06:10We got to do something really great here.
06:11Yep.
06:12And I think what we do is tie the brass back in.
06:14Cool.
06:14Every single window in here,
06:16every hinge in this house is that unlacquered brass.
06:18Yep.
06:19Like, it looks like it's been here forever.
06:21I love that idea.
06:22And then over there is where we were thinking about doing a butler's pantry.
06:26What if Ari could build us a bar that looks old, but it is new.
06:31We incorporate some older pieces into it.
06:33I would die.
06:33Okay, good.
06:34I would die.
06:35What do you envision?
06:36Like, what do you want to store here?
06:37Joe was like, can we make sure we have a snack area?
06:40Is this the snack area?
06:42I don't know where it's at, but we need one somewhere.
06:44We need a snack area somewhere.
06:46I don't know where it could be.
06:46All right, snack time.
06:47Good deal.
06:48But, like, classy.
06:49Yes.
06:51That is the saddest closet.
06:53This is so funny.
06:54I mean, I didn't even...
06:55That was supposed to be the coat closet.
06:56I don't know what that actually is supposed to be.
06:57It's a coat closet?
06:58Yeah, yeah.
06:58Can I find something really cool that could be, like, a little mini, like, bar?
07:04That would be so cool, because you see it from the front door.
07:07I'd love that.
07:08Cocktail area.
07:09How she really sets up sections in a room, and one room becomes four rooms.
07:15It's obvious just she's such a pro and would be willing to work with us, and I think I screamed.
07:21Yeah.
07:21Pretty sure I screamed.
07:22You were excited.
07:23I was very excited.
07:25I grew up in an apartment, lived in a condo for the last 20 years, so it's really nice to
07:28have a home of this size and so many different rooms and so many different options.
07:33It's a big playground.
07:34Yes, it is.
07:34So, speaking of, like, big, how big is this budget?
07:38We have, right now, on an initial phase one, about $200,000.
07:43That's a good budget.
07:44Cool.
07:45I'm so excited.
07:46I'm excited.
07:47That's awesome.
07:47So, next steps, I want to meet their GC immediately.
07:50They said that he is also a landscape architect.
07:53Bingo!
07:54So, I want to meet him street side.
07:56I want to see what he thinks.
07:57I mean, I say that I'm not a landscaper, but I'm pretty good at it.
08:04We're off to such a great start at Forest.
08:06We're demoing everything in that dated kitchen.
08:11Because the Forest project is relatively small, and it's just the exterior and the first floor, I can also take
08:18on something a bit more ambitious.
08:20It's another historic home, but otherwise, it could be more different.
08:25So, I'm headed to the city.
08:26The house is on Monroe Street.
08:27It's right at the edge of the West Loop.
08:34You are not kidding.
08:36That's it.
08:37Oh, my God.
08:46It is a lot of house.
08:49Yeah.
08:49It needs a lot of work.
08:50It's something.
08:52You intentionally bought this.
08:54Even after I saw pictures of the roof, we still put money on the table.
08:58Jim and Mike are like Chicago.
09:02Chicago.
09:03They're developers.
09:05They're best friends.
09:06They have done about nine flips together.
09:09And they called on me, and they're like, hey, we're not designers.
09:12We have an architect, but it needs more.
09:15I mean, this isn't...
09:16So we didn't mean I'd scare you, but here we are.
09:17Listen, nothing scares me, and I have probably not seen anything this bad.
09:23The contrast, and the textures, and the materials, the corbels, and the curves, and the dentals,
09:30and the...
09:30It's just beautiful.
09:32It's so ugly.
09:34It's pretty.
09:35Yeah.
09:36It's our bulldog.
09:37Yeah, like a bulldog.
09:37Yeah.
09:39That's kind of right.
09:40Sorry, bulldog people, but it's just like a bulldog.
09:43It's hard not to love it.
09:45There is so much potential in this beautiful, dilapidated building.
09:49And we're going to have a lot of people looking at it because we're renting it.
09:52We want to rent it.
09:53You called the right person.
09:54We called the right person.
09:55Jim and Mike need me.
09:57Big time.
09:58I got to see this.
09:59I need to go in.
10:00All right.
10:01Badly.
10:01Is it safe to go in?
10:02Let's go with her and make sure she's safe.
10:04It's safe enough to go in.
10:05Can we walk you through the front?
10:05Yes.
10:06Okay.
10:07Just stay to the right there.
10:08Stay to the right.
10:11Oh, God.
10:12Hold that one and push the other.
10:13There you go.
10:17Holy...
10:24All right.
10:24Are you ready for a surprise?
10:30Oh, my.
10:33And you bought this.
10:34It's post-Monster.
10:37The house is definitely in horrible shape.
10:39You've got water leaking through.
10:41You've got holes in this floor.
10:43And then my brain, which is crazy, is already picturing what this is going to look like after.
10:48Do you need any more fireplaces?
10:50We got them all.
10:53So fireplace, fireplace, fireplace.
10:55Yeah.
10:56And another one upstairs.
10:57And another one.
10:58Yeah.
10:58We're in the main.
10:59Yeah.
10:59So we're going to give you a lot to work with.
11:01Look at this.
11:04Look at this, by the way.
11:06That's right.
11:07We're keeping this.
11:08We do have more pieces in the coach house.
11:11And we need to determine whether it can be put back per code.
11:15Right.
11:16I go shopping for these things.
11:17You know, I take something like this.
11:19It's yours.
11:19No, it's yours.
11:20It's yours.
11:21It's yours.
11:21So, formal entry.
11:23This staircase is just beautiful.
11:25Absolutely.
11:26And you walk in, turn to the right.
11:27Boom.
11:28Another fireplace.
11:29Like, this has to be something here.
11:30And that's why we called you.
11:32We would not do it justice.
11:34We need Alice in Victoria to do it justice.
11:35I believe you.
11:37This is like my dream.
11:38Yeah.
11:38And I haven't even seen the whole thing yet, but like, this is just special.
11:41Let's do some more scary stuff.
11:43Currently, Jim and Mike have a repair permit.
11:45Which means they can actually do work to this house to make sure that it's structurally sound.
11:50They have plans that they've started, but I promise you those aren't going to be the plans.
11:54So, it's really, it's perfect time to bring me in and to kind of just look at what they have
11:58so far.
11:59And then just bring it up a few notches.
12:01But obviously, we're doing the kitchen.
12:03We're going to do like this sitting room, dining room.
12:07I want every room to be a usable space.
12:09Yeah.
12:10And built-ins and fireplace mantles and just bringing back the love that was clearly torn out.
12:15Yeah.
12:15I want to see upstairs.
12:16Is it safe?
12:17Sure it's safe.
12:18But you go first.
12:25What is that?
12:28It's so ugly.
12:30It's so pretty.
12:31I'm so torn.
12:34Okay, so this was the main.
12:41Question.
12:41Can we go all the way up?
12:43Yep.
12:43We want to pull this up all the way up into the cupola.
12:45Can I do those as stained glass?
12:47Yep.
12:47That's my hope.
12:48If we can lift the ceiling up, you can look right up into the cupola.
12:52Maybe have some soft lighting up there.
12:53Yes.
12:55This is very special, you guys.
12:57Okay.
12:57Let's go see the coach house.
12:58Let's go.
12:59Yeah.
13:00It's like a little chateau.
13:03Guys, look at the slope and look at the detail.
13:07It's just so pretty.
13:09Yeah.
13:09I love this.
13:12The minute I walked up, just that curb, let's call it curb appeal, this is my type of project
13:17all day long.
13:18I want to understand like your timeline and more importantly your budget.
13:22We're looking six to nine months.
13:24Okay.
13:24So nine months.
13:26Yes.
13:26Probably nine months.
13:27What is your budget to get this completed?
13:30We're in the probably 575 range to start.
13:35So what's your real number?
13:36Because you know the budget's going to change.
13:38We're all realists here.
13:39This budget, it is out of whack.
13:41I'm doing homes that are smaller than this with a $750,000 budget.
13:46So Mike and Jim really better have their ducks in a row with some subs and permits and materials.
13:51Otherwise, that 575 is going to go so fast.
14:00I'm really excited for both projects, Forest and Monroe, even if it's a lot to take on.
14:07So today I'm headed over to the Forest Project in Oak Park to meet with Joe and Erica's contractor, Danny.
14:12He's also a landscape architect, so I want to go over the plans for the entire exterior and landscape of
14:18this house.
14:19All right, Danny, I dabble in landscape.
14:21We got a lot of yard.
14:23We got a beautiful opportunity here to actually start growth before they even get in.
14:27And that way, next spring, it's sprung.
14:30Yeah.
14:30So we were talking about doing something where we truly hedge out the front there.
14:34And maybe do like a Japanese maple here.
14:37Yeah, to get that burgundy color.
14:38Yeah, just to also come down from these big pines and then start to taper.
14:43Okay.
14:43And then this ground cover will come back every year.
14:45Like, I love this.
14:47I don't want to take that out.
14:48It's a little sparse in some areas.
14:50We could pull this up, push it back, probably just bring in some lawn.
14:53We're painting the house, so we're going to do black and white.
14:56Mm-hmm.
14:56So all trim's going to be black.
14:58The rest of the house is all white.
14:59Which one are we going with?
15:00It's milkshaken.
15:01I get the best.
15:02Pure black or whatever.
15:03You got it.
15:03Good memory.
15:05Good deal.
15:06Yeah, he's good.
15:07I married him for a reason.
15:08Yes.
15:08There's a reason.
15:09Well, his height, too.
15:10Yeah, oh, trust.
15:11I'm going to wear these shoes every time I'm with you guys.
15:14Yes.
15:15If it ends up looking beautiful, come however you want.
15:19Yeah.
15:19I even want to keep this.
15:21Like, to be honest, I think that we should do black here.
15:25And then what about the ceiling?
15:27Ceiling, I think, should be black as well as the floor.
15:30Okay.
15:30That'll look sick.
15:30It'll look really good.
15:32So we're good.
15:33Okay, cool.
15:34I'm excited.
15:34I'm excited.
15:40So now that we have a plan, Danny's guys have started painting the exterior trim black.
15:46Inside, they're finishing up in the kitchen.
15:51And opening up the closet where that dry bar is going to go.
16:01Meanwhile, over at Monroe, the guys are waiting on the roofers to start repairs.
16:05So we're in full design mode.
16:07And I've done a lot of old houses.
16:09But 1885 might be the oldest one I've ever worked on.
16:12So I really just want to preserve what is old and beautiful and hold on to all that Chicago charm.
16:19But I definitely need to find something special for each of those four massive fireplaces.
16:26I'm excited for you to see it.
16:28Well, it's the first time here.
16:29Get in here.
16:30All right.
16:33If it's going to be a rental, every room has to have something really special in it.
16:37Yeah.
16:37Here she is.
16:39And I figured that this is the one right when you walk into the door to the right.
16:43Because the molding is going to go back up, separating the space.
16:46Okay.
16:46And then you turn the corner and it's like...
16:48I like it.
16:48It's got a good size, especially with the high ceilings.
16:51It's a good soft color, too.
16:52Isn't that pretty?
16:53Yeah.
16:54And I just want to leave it stained.
16:56I think people are going to be happy that I'm leaving something stained.
16:58I like the rounded, you know, mantelpiece.
17:00Just the carving on it.
17:02It is really special.
17:03That is cool.
17:03This is that touch you need.
17:05This house needs a lot of personal touches.
17:08Everything should be something that they want to brag about or photograph and share on social media.
17:17I think it's going to be a showstopper.
17:18Yeah.
17:19Appreciate it.
17:19Yeah.
17:20It looks nice.
17:21So the next step is really get this house moving.
17:25Get it to a place where I can actually install it.
17:27And bring in that history back into a home that clearly has had all of it ripped out.
17:42At the Forest Project, the guys are getting white paint on the exterior.
17:46And inside, they're opening up that doorway between the kitchen and the sunroom.
17:53Over at Monroe, things haven't been going as smoothly.
17:59Yeah, this is Mike.
18:00Hey, Mike.
18:01It's Allison.
18:02Hi, Allison.
18:03How are you?
18:03I'm good.
18:04How are you?
18:04Not doing too well because the roofers aren't here.
18:07Weren't they supposed to like start two weeks ago?
18:09Yeah, they're giving me some permit reasons.
18:12It's holding up everything, so.
18:14What do you mean permit?
18:15Like as in they don't have a permit?
18:17Well, they were waiting for the permit.
18:19Okay, so they don't have the permit.
18:21Well, they haven't started because of that.
18:30I mean, obviously, if they were supposed to start two weeks ago, they still don't have a permit like when
18:35I was there.
18:35The house looked like it was falling apart, so what's the house look like?
18:39Well, we've had rain for about the last two weeks up until this week, so we've got a lot of
18:43water damage, a lot of moisture sitting in the wood.
18:46The sooner we get this roof on, we can get all the floors, you know, reset with carpentry.
18:51All right, well, I mean, obviously, like, you know, out of all the projects I've got going, like,
18:56here's the one that's kind of scaring me a little just schedule-wise, you know, because winter hits and we're
19:01still not under roof.
19:02I mean, fingers crossed that's not happening, but it's like, you know, that's kind of a scary place to be,
19:08so.
19:08We'll get moving as quickly as we can.
19:10All right, Mike, well, keep me posted.
19:12Hey, will do.
19:13Keep talking with you.
19:14You too.
19:15Yeah, you bet.
19:16All right, talk soon.
19:18It's not a good start.
19:21So now it's going to sit until we get the permit.
19:33It took over a month, but we finally have the repair-replace permit, so we can actually fix the roof
19:38and make some other structural changes.
19:40But my design change requires a build permit, and we're still waiting for that.
19:45This project needs a lot of restructuring and redesign.
19:48And I don't want to get behind, so me and my team are diving in while we wait.
19:53This is a rental property, but I want to design it as a resale property, too.
19:57So on the first floor, we're going to have a living room centered on the fireplace.
20:01The kitchen will go in the back.
20:03We'll add a powder room.
20:04Upstairs, the main suite is going to be at the front of the house.
20:07And down the hall, we can fit in three more bedrooms and a full bath.
20:11We'll add two bedrooms to the basement for a total of six bedrooms and three and a half baths.
20:23At Forest, the landscape is going in.
20:28And drywall's going up in the kitchen and sunroom.
20:32So I was at Salvage One.
20:34I was looking at other pieces for other places and other people.
20:37And I came across the piece for the Forest job, and I just knew.
20:41This one's just like almost the perfect fit.
20:44So I took pictures of it.
20:46I sent it to Erica.
20:47I said, you have to have it.
20:48So I was like, if you're in the city, let's figure it out.
20:51I want you to come by and see it.
20:53Here she is.
20:55Look at her shining.
20:56I love it.
20:59It looks like this could have been in the house.
21:02The middle part will be the dry bar.
21:06Oh, cool.
21:07So that way all like your liquor and everything goes up here.
21:11And then the new unit for like snacks, pantry type storage.
21:15We're going to use the left and the right side.
21:18So Ari's going to cut this.
21:20I don't know how the hell he's going to do it, but he always does so much.
21:23So it's split.
21:24This is like a twofer type deal.
21:26It's a twofer.
21:27Wow.
21:27And you do.
21:28You're going to be able to like have two pieces.
21:30One that's got a little bit of newness to it.
21:33Yep.
21:33And then one that's all original.
21:35And then you've got all the stained glass that I think goes beautifully with what you have.
21:39But what Ari can do with this is going to be the magic part.
21:43That's what I'm really excited about.
21:44I'm so excited.
21:45But it's kind of cool.
21:45It's so cool.
21:46You've got so much history in like your windows and your moldings and everything.
21:50I love that we're able to bring in another like wow factor.
21:54This is not an easy project.
21:57It's going to be a lot of retrofitting and finagling to make it look perfect.
22:01But if there's anybody that can do it, it's Ari.
22:03Thank you so much.
22:04You're welcome.
22:08At Monroe, they are still waiting on permits.
22:11So until that changes, I'm going all in on Forrest.
22:16The floors are getting patched.
22:18The plan is to sand and refinish them the same as the original color so we keep the integrity
22:23of the house.
22:23I want to give Erica and Joe one of a kind dining room.
22:26Something unexpected.
22:27And a big part of that is this beautiful mural.
22:31Hello.
22:33Hi.
22:34Joe Keelan.
22:36Keelan Joe.
22:36Hello.
22:37So today I'm meeting our muralist Keelan over at the Forrest House.
22:41Joe's here.
22:42Erica couldn't make it.
22:43This is a piece I did from several years ago.
22:46Which is insane.
22:47And I brought along stuff that was kind of closest to the brief.
22:51His work and his portfolio are so impressive.
22:54And I feel like this dining room has to be a standout moment.
22:57It's truly an art piece of its own.
23:00Way more foliage than something like this.
23:02Right.
23:02But I love the fact that you're showing us how organic and how natural.
23:06And how detailed you are.
23:07So less autumnal.
23:09Less liminal.
23:10More.
23:11Joe and I don't know what that means.
23:13I felt kind of stupid today.
23:16Because like most of the words I didn't actually understand.
23:19Or maybe the grouping of them.
23:21But I don't want to sound too dumb.
23:22But those are a lot of artists' words.
23:25Well it's just that more greens.
23:27More summer.
23:29Summer.
23:29Okay.
23:30Spring, summer.
23:31Okay.
23:32I really like the colors in this.
23:33The greens and the browns.
23:35This is a real match.
23:36So you have an eye for what they've mentioned to you.
23:38It seems like you've got a really good feel for what we're trying to do here.
23:41The vibe's great.
23:42Yeah.
23:42I know Erica is sold on it.
23:44I am too.
23:45Yes.
23:45And it's a perfect fit for this space.
23:48It is.
23:48It's beautiful.
23:49Okay.
23:49Awesome.
23:50All right.
23:51Let's go over one last thing.
23:53Okay.
23:53So kitchen.
23:55We know that this needs to be snacks.
23:57Yes.
23:58Right?
23:58And then we talked about this being this dry bar.
24:01It's going to be a bar.
24:02Yeah.
24:02Yep.
24:02The middle now has a new home as a dry bar.
24:04And the side pieces are going to flank what will be your new pantry snack bar area in the kitchen.
24:09I love the historic look of this.
24:11And Erica, I know, is going to love the style of these windows right here.
24:14I know.
24:14And the fact that it's something old being put in but made new.
24:17It's awesome.
24:18But keep in mind for the bar, Erica won't be able to use it for at least the first three,
24:23four months we're here because she's pregnant.
24:25Shut up.
24:27Yeah.
24:28Congratulations.
24:30Oh my God.
24:32So one more piece.
24:33How exciting.
24:35Yeah.
24:35My daughter's happy.
24:36She's thrilled.
24:37Erica's thrilled.
24:37We're all happy.
24:38Oh, I'm so happy for you.
24:40Yeah.
24:40That's awesome.
24:41Well, yes.
24:42The dry bar can just be used for...
24:44It'll be for me.
24:45It's for you.
24:45Yeah.
24:46For...
24:46It's for you.
24:47And then you've got your snack bar.
24:49Beautiful.
24:50Right?
24:50Snacks are important.
24:51Snacks.
24:51Yeah, you need to have them.
24:52Erica's going to want snacks.
24:53Yes, yes, yes.
24:54She's going to want snacks.
24:54She's going to want more snacks now.
24:55Much more snacks.
25:07Something is going on over at Monroe.
25:09It has been months without any progress.
25:19I was in the area and I was like, I'm stopping over.
25:23And it's like worse than I thought.
25:24It's just a junkyard.
25:26At least make it look like it's actually getting fixed and under construction.
25:30Clean up the rubble.
25:31Clean up the falling pieces.
25:32Like even with my worst projects on their worst days, nothing ever looked like this.
25:40Yeah, hi, this is Mike.
25:42Hey Mike, it's Allison.
25:44Hi Allison.
25:45Just standing here at the job site and like seeing where we are at.
25:48The yard is like in shambles.
25:50Garbage everywhere.
25:52Everything's just a mess.
25:54We're scheduled for a clean up this coming week.
25:58What day?
25:59What day?
26:00I can send you an update later today.
26:04Well, but when do you think you're getting a permit?
26:06That's what it's all dependent on.
26:08That's right.
26:09That's our.
26:09That's our.
26:10Have you submitted for permit?
26:12No.
26:13No.
26:14What's been happening over the last 3 months though, Mike?
26:17Like what's.
26:18I'm super confused.
26:25This is a big house.
26:29It's an old house and it's in shambles.
26:31You haven't even submitted for permit.
26:34Like this is.
26:35Other than the parapet walls and next 2 to 3 weeks, you know, we hope to seal up as much
26:43of the building.
26:43I don't know how many windows.
26:44You said the clean up crew is going to come.
26:47I will let you know later today.
26:49And then I've got crews to empty out the coach house separate from the main house.
26:53OK.
26:55Something's up.
26:56Something's not right.
26:57I have a gut feeling and I'm not ignoring my gut anymore because I did for way too long.
27:02And that got me in trouble and I'm not getting in trouble anymore.
27:06We'll see who comes to clean up this week.
27:17Back at Forest.
27:19Things are moving.
27:20They're sanding the floor so we can refinish them.
27:25Keelan's getting started on the mural.
27:27And it's so detailed it's going to take at least a few weeks to finish.
27:32I still have a bunch of design stuff to do.
27:34And this project really needs great lighting.
27:38But this.
27:39This would be a stunner.
27:41I feel like $4.95.
27:42I think retail.
27:43Yeah.
27:44Retail's $1,500.
27:45This is a find for sure.
27:46She would die for this.
27:48Erica would love it, love it, love it.
27:52Hello.
27:53I had to call you because I found something super cool for the dining room.
27:57Oh, I'm dying.
27:58OK, ready?
28:00Oh my God.
28:01Dining room fixture.
28:03Wrap her up.
28:04Wrap her up is what I said too.
28:06Oh my God.
28:07You love it?
28:09Love it.
28:09OK, good.
28:10All right, I'm going to get it for you.
28:11All right, thanks Alice.
28:12All right, honey.
28:13Done.
28:14I mean, who doesn't say yes to $4.95?
28:20Monroe is still just sitting there.
28:22It looks like a dump and the guys still haven't filed for a permit.
28:26Meanwhile, my team's been designing and racking up all billable hours.
28:32Hi.
28:33Hi.
28:34So I've been getting a bunch of emails and even a couple texts about meeting with the Monroe guys concerning
28:40the reclaim pieces.
28:41When did you get those messages?
28:43Today.
28:44Which I have no problem getting back to him, but I didn't want to before I talked to you because
28:49I don't think we've heard anything back about the permit.
28:51We have waited for, I think it's been over five months where I have been asking the same questions and
28:58kind of getting the same answers.
29:00So I'm at the point where it's like, we don't have time for this stuff anymore.
29:03And I feel this is the time to let them know, like, I'm so sorry, we're not going to be
29:07able to help you.
29:08It sounds like it's time.
29:09And it is sad because the property is a very cool space.
29:12It's not fair to us either.
29:13No, first of all, it isn't a good business model.
29:16I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.
29:18I don't want you to ever feel like I got to stay on this guy.
29:22I'm going to give him a call, let him know that we're just going to have to pass.
29:25I mean, it's definitely time, it's bad for business, time to cut ties.
29:31It is so hard to walk away from a project like this.
29:34Something is historic and something I wanted to get my hands on, but it doesn't make financial sense for me.
29:39It doesn't make sense for me time-wise.
29:41I have to make that decision as hard as it is and just move on.
29:53Today, I'm heading up to Ari's farm in Wisconsin.
29:57And I want to see how he's doing on his projects for Forrest.
30:00He's got a lot on his plate right now between making a hood and converting the antique cabinet into a
30:05dry bar and snack pantry.
30:09Hi.
30:09Hey.
30:10How are you?
30:11I'm good, how are you guys?
30:12Good.
30:12Golden.
30:13Oh, another hug.
30:14Happy New Years.
30:17Of course, the hood is a moment and it has to be awesome.
30:21You've got the hood insert for this, right?
30:23Yes.
30:23We already framed this around for the hood insert.
30:26I have a ton of questions and I need your design expertise on it.
30:30I really want this to be a very sleek, very modern, tailored, sophisticated, I could go on and on.
30:35But I want this hood to be bad ass.
30:37This kitchen is going to be black and white, so this really will be the art piece of the kitchen.
30:43And what is our height?
30:45So I have 40 inches here, so.
30:46Is it going to the ceiling?
30:47Yeah.
30:48A little short ceiling there.
30:49Yeah.
30:49That has to go to the ceiling.
30:51Yeah.
30:51Because I mean, I wouldn't want it.
30:53They're tall.
30:53They're very tall.
30:54I forgot about this.
30:55I mean, they're like seven feet tall.
30:58I'm not even joking.
30:59I wear my highest heels around them and it still isn't enough.
31:02Wow.
31:02I'm not even, I'm like to her nipple.
31:06107 is the finished ceiling height.
31:08So 107 minus 40 should be 767.
31:14Minus 40.
31:14No, it should be shorter.
31:15Because you're supposed to be 72.
31:17Is 67 off the ceiling?
31:1867.
31:19This has to be 34 inches then.
31:22It's way too big.
31:23I think we...
31:23Yeah, it's 67.
31:24What?
31:25Now this hood, which already feels small with me looking at it, is getting smaller.
31:29And if they're tall, it's going to look really weird to them, you know?
31:31Yeah.
31:32I mean, 72 is the minimum I put the bottom of my hoods, you know?
31:36So it changes the look of it a little bit.
31:38That's so stupid.
31:39Yeah.
31:39It's not long and slender.
31:48They are tall and that ceiling is not.
31:50Oh, we can't go wider.
31:51We built the thing.
31:53We can cut it down.
31:55Ari starts talking to me about like, hey, we've got to shave off this much.
31:58Now I'm picturing it.
31:59It's going to be this weird, like, almost like a soffeted hood.
32:02And if the hood ends up being too squatty, I might just scratch it.
32:05But the hood was something really special for Erica and I want to stick with it.
32:09So 34 is here.
32:11We have to trim off six inches of the height of the hood.
32:14You give the proper distance between the range, top of the range, and the bottom of the hood.
32:19I don't need them smashing their heads into it.
32:22Oh, that's not bad.
32:23You guys have me all worried.
32:25So it's 34.
32:27We're fine.
32:28And it sounded bad, but once Ari measured it, it worked.
32:32We're not chopping off that much.
32:33I think six inches down, still very substantial.
32:35And it is going to be gorgeous.
32:38Just do-si-do like that.
32:41I like it.
32:42I love it.
32:44Right there.
32:46You know, if I'm only doing one floor, it better be damn good.
32:49You know?
32:49So finding this bar and taking it apart, like pieces of it, to make something new also,
32:56is something I actually don't think I've done.
32:58Or maybe I have.
32:59I've probably done it.
33:00I don't remember.
33:01Okay.
33:02Dry bar.
33:03It'll illuminate at night.
33:05Glassware up here.
33:06Now this looks like it's like own piece.
33:09I was able to salvage the doors.
33:11Yes, that's what we wanted.
33:11I only wanted the doors.
33:12Yeah.
33:13I knew that we couldn't save the sides.
33:15So then taking these doors.
33:16Yeah, I took the doors off.
33:17This is now kind of an extension into the kitchen.
33:19I love that we have open shelving because we have no uppers in this kitchen.
33:24Oh, really?
33:24So this is really going to serve a big purpose.
33:26And then the base.
33:28Yeah, I was able to reuse those doors also.
33:30Of course.
33:31That's what we wanted.
33:31So this is the base of it.
33:33Snack time for him.
33:34Yeah.
33:34And then everything else.
33:35Okay.
33:36This is really pretty.
33:37This is an old salvaged piece of oak.
33:38Isn't it pretty?
33:39Yeah, this is red oak too.
33:40I like that.
33:40That's a cool door.
33:41It's a cool door.
33:42They're a little crooked door, so I had to make the frame a little bit kind of match itself.
33:46It's okay.
33:47To do this kind of project with Ari, it's like, that is like where we like create magic.
33:52It's going to be really pretty.
33:53Yeah, it's a cool cabinet.
33:55He is like a shining star right now.
34:10The kitchen is coming together.
34:13They're laying that beautiful black and white tile.
34:18The cabinets are going in.
34:20And the island is all set.
34:24Okay, so it's one of my last days before Forrest is like done done.
34:28I'm leaving town today.
34:29So I'm just here stopping in.
34:31I haven't seen Danny in a while.
34:32There's a lot going on.
34:33Look at this.
34:37I haven't seen this.
34:40Nelson's here to knock out the built-ins and the hood that they're already built.
34:44Look at that hood.
34:45That's a cool hood.
34:46That's going to be the showstopper.
34:49When are you guys getting this sucker up?
34:50I'm working on it now.
34:51Okay.
34:52I can't wait.
34:54Keelan's mural is looking unbelievable.
34:57It's that day.
34:58It's the crazy day where it's just a lot going on.
35:01So being here is really important.
35:03Okay.
35:03You know, you don't have any real uppers in here.
35:05And I know she wanted to do some shell.
35:07It needs something.
35:08Good.
35:09Thank you for appreciating that.
35:10No problem.
35:11All right.
35:1338 and 3 quarters by 34 and a quarter.
35:19How do we create symmetry on a wall that is so broken up?
35:22I got a window.
35:23Then I got a wall and the hood doesn't even sit center.
35:27Right here?
35:27I would have them lower.
35:29Yeah.
35:29Almost like the center of the sconce would be at the bottom of the hood.
35:34Yeah.
35:34I agree.
35:35And then we'll just do equal distance on the other side.
35:37And then that determines where the open shelving is.
35:40So we created our own center point by putting the sconces, equal distance, and then doing some beautiful corner shelves.
35:47To have a place for kind of go-to stuff.
35:50Spices, olive oils, cookbooks.
35:52I think we only do two.
35:54Only two only?
35:55Two shelves only.
35:56All right.
35:56Fine.
35:57All right.
35:57So that's perfect.
35:58And we'll make sure then that wherever the hood stops, because it'll be mounted today.
36:01Yep.
36:01That this is the same distance here.
36:03And then we'll match it over here.
36:04And that's then where the shelves will have.
36:05And there is now symmetry.
36:06And there's purpose.
36:07Yeah.
36:08And it's broken up with the glass.
36:09Design element.
36:13What else?
36:14You guys are moving.
36:15This looks good.
36:15We're moving.
36:16It's going to come together.
36:16It took a while to get here, but we're moving.
36:19When I'm in a house where the mural's going up, and we're talking about lighting, we're there.
36:24And that's fun for me.
36:25And just making sure it's perfect.
36:27Because then the next time I'm going to see it, it's going to be done.
36:34Come in.
36:35Oh!
36:36So much.
36:37Very emotional for both of us.
36:39I love it.
36:49Big, huge, thick.
36:56This house has just been such a fun project.
37:00To be able to be so creative.
37:03To have people that trust you.
37:06They really let me fly with this vision.
37:11So bright.
37:13Magical.
37:17Okay.
37:17So obviously it's a beautiful day.
37:19You have the most beautiful house on the block.
37:29It's stately, but still like sexy.
37:32Every time we have neighbors that walk up, they always stop.
37:35With the black and white.
37:36I love the black and white.
37:38It's a huge difference, you guys.
37:40Let's talk about the porch.
37:43I mean, you don't get it in the city.
37:44Because you're going to spend your spring, summer, fall out there.
37:48Grab some porch wine.
37:49Yeah, porch wine.
37:50I'm all about porch wine.
37:52Yes.
37:52Yes.
37:53And now it's time to go inside your new house.
37:57Come on, girl.
37:58Exciting.
38:01Okay, come in.
38:04Oh, my God.
38:06Oh.
38:07Oh, my.
38:10Oh.
38:11I love it.
38:14Alison.
38:15The green.
38:16It's so strong, but it's still so soft.
38:19I love the green.
38:20I love the green.
38:21It's not very Kermit, which is what I would say.
38:23Correct.
38:23I don't want it to be too green.
38:27But come and look at this.
38:28Oh, my God.
38:29Just, like, take it in from this way.
38:32I can't get over it.
38:33I mean, it's a house.
38:35This is very, very cool.
38:36The floors.
38:37Oh, you love here.
38:37The stain.
38:38Yeah.
38:38And I don't think they can look this good.
38:40I'm in shock.
38:40They look great.
38:40Everything.
38:41I normally am against the honey tones.
38:43Yeah.
38:44But yours just works in this house, especially with the original trim that goes around these beautiful stained glass windows.
38:50How do you not fall in love with them?
38:51I'm remembering when we bought the house and what it looked like.
38:55I just can't get over it.
38:56I didn't know.
39:00Okay, you want to see my favorite room?
39:01Yes.
39:02Oh.
39:04This is dope.
39:08Oh, my God.
39:11She's crying now looking at this.
39:12I cried at the beginning when I saw the budget.
39:14She's crying now here at the end, so very emotional for both of us.
39:20I wanted wallpaper and this is just...
39:24Look at the detail that he did.
39:26Holy...
39:27And look at the colorway.
39:28I mean, he nailed it.
39:30It's beautiful.
39:30This is beautiful.
39:32I can't believe we live here.
39:33Yeah.
39:33This is your house.
39:34I'm like in shock that we live here.
39:35Not a single person on this planet will have this look or pattern in their home.
39:40It's a work of art.
39:41It's beautiful.
39:42It is.
39:42Wallpaper wouldn't have given us this.
39:44Oh, my God.
39:46Oh, my God.
39:49And this?
39:50All the angles and the angles and the sheen, it's unbelievable.
39:53We wanted something really oversized, but I didn't want it to feel heavy.
39:58You go from like this dark to like a medium with depth and texture to this bright white morning room.
40:08It's such this transition.
40:10This is where you're gonna have your coffee.
40:11This is where you're gonna sit and chill.
40:13This is where I see you guys like with your laptop at the island.
40:16I had no idea what to do with this room.
40:18Yes.
40:18Or what it would even look like.
40:22This is chill.
40:23Lay it back.
40:24I like it.
40:24You like it?
40:25This makes sense.
40:26All right.
40:27Look at this.
40:28Nice.
40:29Oh, my God.
40:34You talked all about balance.
40:36This is like, it's insane.
40:39Oh, my God.
40:40I love it.
40:43Isn't it cool?
40:44It's hard to believe this was the...
40:45I can't even believe it.
40:46It's the same kitchen we started out with.
40:50The hood.
40:52It's huge.
40:53Gigantic.
40:55The sconces.
40:56Yeah.
40:56I love them.
40:58And you do have ample storage.
41:00Danny and I just laid that out.
41:02We don't have cabinets over here.
41:03No.
41:03This is perfect for that.
41:04Right.
41:05Something up high.
41:05I agree.
41:06I agree.
41:07And your snack bar.
41:09I mean, let's just talk about it for a second.
41:10Yes.
41:13The real catalyst for this entire wall.
41:17Yeah.
41:17Was just that one piece that we went and looked at.
41:20And then we made two pieces out of it, giving you a true dry bar.
41:25And then to take the doors off the side and have Ari retrofit it to give you your snack area.
41:30You just have ample storage in a kitchen that didn't really allow you to do uppers.
41:37This is all beautiful, Alison.
41:38It is.
41:39How everything flows.
41:40You know, you guys deserve it.
41:41I get it.
41:42I mean, you're moving from the city, small space, adding to the family.
41:45Yeah.
41:45And think about, like, your whole family being here.
41:49And being comfortable.
41:50My God.
41:50Totally.
41:53I just love the flow.
41:55Yeah.
41:55All the things that I thought in my head about what I wanted, it's like those things times
42:00a million.
42:01Like, everything has been elevated to, like, the next level.
42:04We are so appreciative.
42:06I love, truly.
42:07Loved, loved working with you.
42:08Oh, and this is your next chapter.
42:12Alison crushed it.
42:13It's breathtaking.
42:14I can't believe we live there.
42:18There's just so many great things that are going to happen in this house.
42:21Now we have a brother for Jada.
42:23It's really cool to have a home where we can make it our own and still keep that character
42:28and know that it's a home that we can grow into.
42:33I fell in love with this house the first time I saw it.
42:37So to be able to say I had a part in making it even more beautiful, that's pretty cool.
42:42And we are able to give two very deserving people their dream home more than they could have actually dreamed
42:49of.
42:49That's the cool part of my job is to be able to give people what they didn't even know they
42:54wanted and more.
42:55That's why I love what I do.
42:56That's why I love what I do.
