UN Security Council sanctions RSF commanders for atrocities in Darfur

The United Nations Security Council has sanctioned four commanders of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for atrocities in Darfur described as having “the hallmarks of genocide.”

00:00The United Nations Security Council has sanctioned four commanders of Sudan's paramilitary rapid support forces
00:07for atrocities in Darfur, described as having the hallmarks of genocide.
00:13UN experts found that RSF fighters carried out ethnically motivated mass killings and executions,
00:20sexual violence and kidnappings when they seized North Darfur's capital Al-Fasha in October
00:27after an 18-month siege.
00:30Thousands of people were killed and only 40% of the city's population escaped.
00:36Those sanctioned include Abdul Rahim Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF's deputy commander,
00:42and brother of its leader, General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
00:47The man known as Abu Lulu, or the Butcher of Al-Fasha, is also included.
00:52He was filmed executing civilians and boasting about the killings.
00:56The sanctions involved travel bans and asset freezes.
01:00The United Kingdom sanctioned the same commanders in December.
01:05The UN move is seen as a step towards restoring international accountability
01:09and putting pressure on Sudan to end the conflict.
