00:01when the coach says
00:05I've got to establish the running game
00:07typically you have to run the ball to set up the pass
00:10he is, if you'll excuse me Cameron, he's full of s***
00:13that's the biggest myth in sports
00:15that shows you how many people don't know what they don't know
00:17you think you know, but you don't know
00:21we all don't know everything
00:23and you never will
00:28NFL history is laden with larger than life figures
00:32that's a legend right there
00:33you're just a squirrel trying to get a nut
00:36today, the league's landscape has enough nutty myths
00:40to get 32 teams through even the coldest of winters
00:43I can't feel my hands or feet, man
00:45I'm freaking out
00:47act like you're an athlete
00:48even if it's a myth
00:50we chose the top 10 pieces of football common knowledge
00:54our experts decided what was truth
00:57and what was myth
00:58I think to be a truly great myth
01:01there's also got to be a great debate
01:03defense wins championships
01:06very true
01:09that's the top one
01:10well, there's an exception to that
01:12quarterback needs a rocket arm
01:15that is the truth
01:16that is perception
01:17no, okay
01:20you've got to have more conviction than that
01:22all these myths are kind of interconnected a little bit
01:25we may never know the identity of who's behind all this mythical mischief
01:29oh, come on, who's that?
01:32but we will unmask each myth's naked truth
01:39the number 10 football myth of all time
01:41tackle statistics are accurate
01:44the reason that the statistic is worthless
01:47is because every team does it differently
01:50I believe them about as much as I can believe that I can sell my house for what it's appraised
01:55at for real estate taxes, okay?
01:57why?
01:59during the NFL's infancy, different rules made tackles easier to record
02:04you had to hold the guy down for about 5 seconds and that was really a tackle
02:08every motion Willis makes is pointed toward the tackle
02:12and when he makes them
02:13brother, they stay tackled
02:16since then, the 5 second rule has become synonymous with food on the ground
02:20not ball carriers
02:24as the game sped up
02:26tackles became harder to track
02:28and defenders are happy to help inflate their statistics
02:32players will go to the statisticians
02:34or relay word to the statisticians
02:36hey man, I made more tackles than that
02:38you better wise up
02:39desperate people do desperate things
02:42Ray Lewis is involved in water
02:43Ray Lewis gets far more tackles than he's actually involved with
02:46but they want to keep Ray happy
02:48so, he gets the benefit of the statisticians' dollars
02:51full fail! full fail! full fail!
02:55full fail!
02:57other times, tackles can run into film room padding
03:03if a guy had 7 tackles on Sunday
03:05somehow it was 11 on Monday when the game film was reviewed
03:09we'd actually have players that we would start to say
03:12you know, the guy's a great player on Monday
03:14too bad he didn't show up too much on Sunday
03:16the most worthless thing is letting a coach decide who's in on a tackle
03:21you see a 3 yard run and a pile of dust
03:24I mean, who really made the tackle?
03:27when a guy jumps on the pile, is that part of the tackle?
03:30of course not
03:31the first guy is the guy who made the tackle
03:33first defender
03:35coaches will give assist to guys that were in the neighborhood
03:38sometimes a coach gets a tackle
03:41ok?
03:42you get a tackle, you get a tackle, you get a tackle
03:44thank you!
03:46thank you!
03:47then he started adding it all up
03:48he said, this is mathematically impossible!
03:50are they counting tackles from practice?
03:54you always bo-
03:55now let me see you make the tackle
03:59our number 10 myth says tackle swaps aren't accurate
04:02but does that mean tackles are worthless?
04:05tackles are important
04:06if you're out there getting tackles
04:09yeah, sometimes you get a few easy ones
04:12it's still what the game is all about
04:14stopping the other guy
04:16you gotta tackle him!
04:18if there isn't a tackle
04:19then everybody keeps running like Forrest Gump
04:21everybody's grabbing out there
04:22nobody's tackling
04:23keep grabbing, everybody
04:25grab, grab, grab
04:27somebody's tackling
04:28ha!
04:29you know if a guy's a good defender or not
04:31and numbers I think are meaningless when it comes to tackles
04:36coming up
04:37when does putting its best foot forward set a team back?
04:42guess one football myth that didn't make our countdown?
04:45it's that old wives tale that rookie NFL head coaches cannot win
04:49i do not think, do not think at all that is true
04:52it used to seem like a fact
04:54considering the NFL coaching debuts of men like
04:57Lou Holtz
04:58Steve Spurrier
04:59and Bobby Petrino
05:01Smith!
05:02sorry!
05:03but in 2008
05:04the trio of John Harbaugh
05:06Mike Smith
05:07and Tony Sperano
05:08all became NFL head coaches for the first time
05:11and each led his team to the playoffs
05:15and each led his team to the playoffs
05:41repeat as the Super Bowl champion
05:44that's not a myth
05:44I think it's a myth to say it's hard to repeat
05:46there are teams that have made that ride over and over again
05:52if you have a good model of keeping good players on your team
05:56developing good players through the draft
05:57you're going to be in the Super Bowl over and over again
06:00two in a row
06:02how sweet it is!
06:05how is it hard to repeat as a Super Bowl champion a myth?
06:08i'm going to throw the red challenge flag on myth number nine
06:11because it is difficult
06:13this is
06:14algebra
06:15it's hard to win to begin with
06:17winning back to back
06:18is even harder
06:19to a more exponential level
06:21exactly
06:23only eight teams have ever done it
06:24in the history of the NFL
06:26nobody's done it in over 20 years
06:28right now
06:30that was some quick math there huh?
06:32i mean the last 25 years
06:33how many teams have done it?
06:34funny you should ask
06:37since the Super Bowl began
06:38eight teams have won the title
06:40and then repeated
06:42the Lombardi Packers
06:43Shula Dolphins
06:44the Noles Steelers
06:45did it twice
06:46the Montana Niners
06:47Triplet Cowboys
06:48Elways Broncos
06:49and Belichick Patriots
06:51you can't get the title
06:52unless you knock yourself out
06:54and we didn't say
06:55that means of the 17 franchises
06:57that have won the Super Bowl
06:59seven of them have won two straight
07:00and remember the Steelers have won two straight
07:03two times
07:04so eight of the 17 winning franchises
07:07almost 50%
07:08have gone
07:09back to back baby
07:10back to back baby
07:11back to back baby
07:15yeah maybe other teams will be gunning for you
07:18because you are the defending champs
07:20but you gotta do your thing
07:22we know we're the best team
07:24let's just want to prove it today
07:25it's just hard to win a Super Bowl
07:27so it's no harder to repeat
07:29than it is to win that first
07:30where the problem comes in
07:32is that it's like hard to three-peat
07:34and they are world champions once again
07:36people get that mixed up
07:38they say well it's hard to repeat
07:39yeah
07:39no it's hard to repeat
07:40after you repeat it
07:42now the question
07:43can they have a three-peat
07:45it's much harder to repeat
07:47it's almost impossible to three-peat
07:50Super Bowl champion in the era
07:52salary cap and free agency
07:53than it was before
07:54Green Bay didn't have to worry
07:56about a salary cap
07:57Cowboys didn't have to worry about it
07:59Pittsburgh didn't have to worry about it
08:00the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s
08:04the best team ever
08:07would they be saying that about the Steelers
08:10if they had a cap and Chuck Knoll
08:11it had to pick between Swan and Stallworth
08:14the Lambert and Ham
08:15that's why Bill Belichick's accomplishments
08:17in New England may be the most impressive in history
08:20for a coach
08:26it's hard to repeat
08:27as AFC West champion
08:31it's hard to repeat
08:32as AFC conference champion
08:35let alone Super Bowl champion
08:37it is Super Bowl XI
08:39to win a Super Bowl
08:40when the people who've done it
08:42are telling you how hard it is
08:44it's pretty hard
08:46everything has to go perfect
08:48the cheerleaders
08:49got to be perfect
08:50the ball boys
08:51got to be perfect
08:51you better catch it
08:52the coaches got to be perfect
08:53everything's got to be perfect
08:54but it can only be perfect
08:57one year in a row
09:01bottom line is
09:02if you aren't good enough
09:03to win a Super Bowl
09:03then you're probably good enough
09:05to get back
09:05usually a team that good
09:07is going to be that good
09:08the following year
09:09and they'll be in the race
09:10Cowboys back to back
09:11in the half
09:12from a standpoint
09:14no
09:14yeah
09:15you can repeat
09:16it's just
09:17you can't three-peat
09:18the number eight
09:19football myth of all time
09:20you should punt
09:21on fourth down
09:22number eight
09:24teams should be a lot more
09:26aggressive than they are
09:27who determine this
09:28a college professor
09:30a college professor
09:31that has never coached
09:32a game in his life
09:33so you're going to tell me
09:34about the guy from Cal
09:35over there
09:35that has this formula
09:36that says you should go for it
09:38on fourth down
09:39I don't know that his study
09:40is based on number one
09:41enough data
09:42I use data from every single
09:44NFL game for three years
09:45teams would on average
09:47be better off going for it
09:48if it's on average
09:49good to do
09:51well
09:52that's why
09:53Lovie Smith
09:54Steve Mariucci
09:55and Marvin Lewis
09:57weren't very good coaches
09:58you know
09:59they had their moments
10:01but you know
10:03you have Carson Palmer
10:04and Chad Ochoa Cinco
10:06and Rudy Johnson
10:07and his fourth and one
10:09in your punting
10:10that's ridiculous
10:12that's ridiculous
10:12you have Steve Young
10:13Jerry Rice
10:14Terrell Owens
10:14and Garrison Hurst
10:16like Mariucci
10:18does
10:18and you punt
10:19on fourth and one
10:20that's ridiculous
10:23Lovie Smith
10:24should be punting
10:28do something
10:29that each individual
10:30case it can't be bad
10:31ask him if his mortgage
10:33is on the line
10:34if it's fourth and eight
10:35and you don't make it
10:36what do you have to lose
10:38except your
10:38damn job
10:43more yards are gained
10:45and lost on punts
10:46than on any other play
10:47in pro football
10:48punts like this 90 yarder
10:50by Don Chandler
10:51can change the tenor
10:52of an entire game
10:54I don't mind punting
10:55when you're 25
10:57or 30 yard line
10:58but if you're
10:58in the 45 yard line
10:59on the opposing team
11:00why do you want to punt?
11:02so you're saying
11:02punt it on the 30 yard line?
11:04you may get a net of
11:05maybe 14, 15 yards
11:07it's just going to gain
11:0810 yards
11:09you're punting the ball away
11:11if all that's in the end zone
11:12comes out to the 20
11:15don't don't
11:16hey kicked it in the
11:17f***ing end zone
11:18that doesn't make sense to me
11:25I think the economist
11:26is on to something
11:29a good coach understands
11:31go for it at the key moments
11:33in the game
11:34let's see
11:36let's go for it
11:37let's go for it
11:38let's go for it
11:39let's go for it
11:40a riverboat gambler type
11:42a Jerry Glanbill type
11:43may go for it
11:44at any instance
11:45and it may backfire
11:46in his face
11:46anybody nervous?
11:48anybody scared?
11:49I like coaches that gamble
11:51I remember Patera
11:52up in Seattle
11:53they didn't have
11:54many good players
11:55so he used all four downs
11:56you could never
11:58come off the field
11:58I smell something here
12:00it's too early to kick that long
12:01but maybe he will
12:02we'll see
12:02even on field goals
12:04he's faking
12:12he's using every down
12:13to try and gain yards
12:152-6
12:16first down
12:17I like that
12:18that's good
12:20our number 8 myth says
12:22that teams should punt
12:23on 4th and short
12:24so is it better
12:25to throw in the towel
12:27or sweat it out
12:28by going for it
12:29y'all punt it
12:30y'all give it up
12:32oh man
12:33y'all stink
12:34I don't think 4th and 1 now
12:36is an automatic punt
12:38like it used to be
12:38teams need to go for it more
12:40on 4th and short
12:41especially at midfield
12:43we're not punting dog
12:44we're not punting
12:46you're gonna get that
12:474th down
12:48more than half the time
12:49and it easily makes up
12:51for the field position
12:52that you lose
12:53during the times
12:54that you fail
12:55I think we're seeing more
12:57in
12:57you want better field position
12:58or you want points
13:01more
13:02you know that myth's
13:03going away
13:04we're not gonna punt this year
13:05anyhow so you don't have to
13:06worry about it
13:07coming up
13:08which myth is cool
13:09with some people
13:10I don't think there is
13:12any such thing as
13:12sportsmanship
13:13but has Don Shula
13:15hot under the collar
13:16I really have a
13:18distaste
13:19for what they're doing
13:20in that situation
13:25turnovers are huge
13:26great football teams
13:28do a great job
13:28of not turning it over
13:30and the story of this game
13:31turnovers
13:32but some think that
13:35turnovers deciding games
13:36is not a myth
13:37turnovers decide games
13:39is not a misperception
13:40of course turnovers decide games
13:42everything that you do
13:43decides games
13:44everyone remembers the catch
13:46most forget the turnovers
13:49the 49ers turned the ball over
13:51six times
13:52and won an NFC championship game
13:55they tell you
13:56we can't turn the ball
13:57they turned the ball over
13:57six times and won
13:58the 49ers had six turnovers
14:00as a team
14:01in a 2006 game
14:03Rex Grossman had six turnovers
14:05by himself
14:06in a Bears victory
14:07they are who we thought they were
14:09and we let them off the hook
14:11the number seven
14:13football myth of all time
14:14dome teams are soft
14:17dome teams are fast
14:18I don't know if they're soft
14:20are dome teams soft
14:22but they used to be soft
14:24until
14:261999
14:27uh
14:28yes
14:29I don't buy that notion
14:31if you're a good football team
14:32you're a good football team
14:33and you can win anywhere
14:34dome teams are soft
14:35because they play inside
14:36that was a fact for many years
14:39they weren't tough enough
14:40Jackson just blasted and
14:42dragged them into the end zone
14:43if you brought dome teams into
14:45very cold
14:46wintry conditions
14:47it was going to be a problem
14:49but if you brought any open air
14:51southern team
14:52a Miami team
14:53a San Diego team
14:54they'd be at the same disadvantage
14:55that a dome team would be
14:57San Diego
14:57wishing that this game
14:59could have been played
14:59on a warm day
15:02the biggest mistake
15:03the Vikings ever made
15:04was going into a dome
15:06when they played
15:07in the old Met
15:08in Bloomington
15:08they had a home field advantage
15:10they wound up going
15:11to four Super Bowls
15:12let's go now
15:13that's our ball
15:13the reason the Minnesota Vikings
15:15have not been back
15:16to a Super Bowl
15:16is because of the fact
15:18that they went to a dome
15:19they have never been the same team
15:21the Falcons
15:22have stolen the thunder
15:24from the Vikings
15:24it's like
15:26guess what
15:27it only gets worse
15:28the season after they
15:29put this out
15:312009 NFC Championship game
15:33to the Falcons
15:372017
15:39had to come outside
15:40to play the Eagles
15:43still haven't been to the Super Bowl
15:47getting punched in the gut
15:49the Minnesota Vikings
15:50are anything but soft
15:52you can't run against them
15:53they got pass rushes outside
15:56they got a power running game
15:58how are they
15:59anything but the antithesis
16:01of what we think
16:02of the old dome teams
16:04you'll find some really tough teams
16:05that played in domes
16:06and you can't call them soft
16:08teams like the Houston Oilers
16:09they were a very physical team
16:12Jim Mora's New Orleans Saints
16:14they sent four linebackers
16:17to the Pro Bowl
16:17they weren't a soft team
16:19but you don't
16:20know
16:22and you never
16:22will
16:23the 99 Rams
16:25weren't supposed to win
16:26they're a dome team
16:27the NFC Championship game
16:30they had to do all the things
16:31dome teams were not supposed to do
16:33they had to play a close game
16:34and come up with the one play at the end
16:36that allowed them to get through
16:38far sideline
16:39and this
16:39yes
16:40touchdown
16:41yes
16:44dome teams have played
16:46ten conference championship games
16:48on the road
16:48outdoors
16:49they have lost all ten
16:51maybe it's not a myth
16:52if you play in a dome
16:53you're going to need speed
16:54you're going to want to probably
16:55have lighter players
16:56well now all of a sudden
16:58you go outdoors
16:59and it's freezing
17:00and you're playing a power football game
17:02that's a whole different kind of game
17:04physical cold weather football
17:06dome teams are soft
17:07if that's the case
17:09put on the highlight film
17:11of the Colts
17:11winning in Baltimore
17:13on their playoff run
17:14in 2006
17:15the Colts have it
17:17it was cold
17:17and you got the Ravens
17:18and Ray Lewis
17:19they were the big tough team
17:21nice cotton swab team
17:22they took the game to the Ravens
17:24fight it away
17:25and picked up by the Colts
17:26the game is now over
17:27this team proved capable
17:29of playing anywhere
17:29the Colts are world champions
17:34we think of the old dome teams
17:36as being spread them out
17:37passing teams
17:38that are a little soft
17:39and they were
17:41I don't think that's true anymore
17:43it just comes down to
17:44what kind of team you are
17:44and how good you are
17:47I do not think dome teams
17:49are any more soft
17:50that's a bad one
17:51you gotta get that off your list
17:52the number six football myth of all time
17:55icing the kicker works
17:58all the time out
17:59ice the kicker
18:00time out
18:01time out
18:02time out
18:03time out
18:04icing the kicker
18:05has been done for years
18:07but is its effectiveness
18:08myth or truth
18:10time out
18:10time out
18:12on the kicker
18:14that is a big myth
18:15that you can ice the kicker
18:17because they want to be iced
18:18okay
18:19I think sometimes kickers
18:20maybe like the extra time
18:22and they think
18:23well they're going to think about this
18:24but I don't think it works
18:27the coaches say
18:28hey
18:28this can get in their psyche
18:30and make them think about the kick
18:31just a little bit longer
18:33I kind of think it's hogwash though
18:34you can ice me all you want
18:36I'm still going to hit it
18:37that's my attitude
18:38I do
18:38ice me fine
18:39I mean I hit a 50 yarder after an ice
18:41and it is
18:42good
18:43Stoffer wins it
18:44please give me more time
18:46it's great
18:46it just makes me even that much more confident
18:48that I'm going to be more
18:49more successful with that field
18:50oh yeah
18:51him and the Ravens
18:53won the Super Bowl
18:53right after he interviewed that
18:56so
18:59think icing him works
19:00it doesn't
19:01we'll go
19:05sorry to bring this up again
19:07Bills fans
19:08but obviously
19:09not everyone feels the same confidence
19:11after being iced
19:12timeout
19:13a timeout is taken
19:15the Giants want to try to ice him here
19:17I do remember I think there was a timeout call
19:19so
19:20kind of broke down
19:21in some sense
19:23because of that
19:24the old
19:24ice the kicker
19:26arm extended
19:27puts it down
19:28on the way
19:29it's long enough
19:30and it is no good
19:32oh
19:33he missed it to the right
19:34with four seconds to play
19:41some kickers
19:41some kickers
19:42freeze under pressure
19:43others have ice water
19:44in their veins
19:45I played with a kicker
19:46that probably will go to the hall of fame
19:48Adam Beneterry
19:48the greatest clutch kicker
19:50probably in the history of the name
19:51he got in the hall of fame this year
19:53national football league
19:54I'd say he's going to the hall of fame
19:56for all the clutch kicks he's made
19:57so the times that you know
19:59opposing teams that try to ice him
20:01you know it made him even more clutch
20:03prime example was the snowball that we had
20:06all the big linemen with the size 14 shoes were
20:09helping me try to clear a patch of snow
20:11coach Gruden called time out
20:12which
20:13hindsight looking back at it
20:14I'd like to thank you for it
20:16gave us more opportunity to clear more snow
20:18and give me just a little bit better
20:20of a
20:21the crowd will tell you whether he makes it or not
20:23kick is up
20:25good
20:29you know what's really ridiculous
20:31what really gets my goat is the
20:32the coaches that call time out at the last possible second
20:35this is 53
20:36for the win
20:38Dick Bulk is on line
20:39is it long enough
20:42the Cowboys
20:43win
20:44but no
20:45a time out called by Buffalo
20:47for a coach on the sideline to have the official
20:49come over and stand next to him and say
20:50right before that ball is snapped
20:52I want to call a time out
20:54you know I think that is wrong
20:56I think it's one of the worst things that we've done
20:58as far as rule change of the game
21:00what a call by Dick Duran
21:02it's a great call
21:03and you know what it's a terrible rule
21:04I really have a
21:07distaste for what they're doing
21:09I don't think there is any such thing as poor sportsmanship
21:11our game is about
21:13execution
21:13I would run up the score against every team if I could
21:16and pressure
21:17I would ice the kicker
21:18making things happen
21:19I would call a late time out
21:21as opposed to trying to gimmick up the game
21:23I would throw things on the field
21:25my sock
21:26a red flag
21:26whatever I have in my shoe
21:27do people talk about that guy in New England
21:29with the snowblower
21:30enter the Foxborough brushman
21:33who cleared the path to victory
21:35the snowplow game
21:37is the most unfair act
21:38that's ever been perpetrated
21:39in the history of the National Football League
21:41who cares how you win
21:42just win
21:45some kicks go in
21:47Lawrence Tynes has kicked the Giants to the Super Bowl
21:50others do not
21:51and it is
21:53no good
21:55that icing the kicker
21:56doesn't play a big part
21:58in the outcome
21:59that is a myth
21:59icing the kicker does not work
22:01I would love someone to show me
22:02when icing the kicker works
22:04maybe it works in high school
22:05what you're banking on
22:06is that the kicker
22:07is just going to overthink
22:08and take himself out of his form
22:10but
22:10what else are kickers doing all day long
22:13but thinking
22:15coming up
22:15see why quarterbacks
22:17aren't the only people
22:18who need a rocket arm
22:20if you can ice a kicker
22:22they're not that good
22:23in the first place
22:24I am going to throw up
22:25direct through my television
22:33before we reveal the rest of our list
22:35know now the number 5 football myth of all time
22:38a quarterback needs a rocket arm
22:42quarterback needs a rocket arm
22:44you know I like a quarterback
22:45with a really good arm
22:46let's start with that
22:47I think that's a fact
22:49I really do
22:50it now opens your offense up to all possibilities
22:55hey we can do it all
22:57help this rocket
22:58it's rocket
22:58now we don't have to
23:00knock off the top
23:0110% or 15% of it
23:03because he can't make certain throws down the field
23:05can Anthony do it?
23:06I think you need to thread the needle
23:08in the NFL
23:09I think you need to zip it in there
23:11I don't know if too many top gun arms
23:13would have won Super Bowls
23:18of course if I start naming names
23:20then I can't see these quarterbacks in public anymore
23:24Montana
23:25Young
23:26yeah right
23:27a quarterback needs a rocket arm
23:29false
23:31no it does not need a rocket arm
23:32how's your Marcus Russell doing these days?
23:34going for a bomb
23:35down the right sideline
23:37he overflows
23:37man it's bad
23:39how's Kyle Bowler?
23:40it's a shame to explain the obvious
23:42but that was an ill-advised pass right there
23:43that rocket arm
23:46hate Kyle Bowler
23:48can't believe we have to bring him up
23:50he'd be throwing the ball into the hands
23:52the guys wearing jerseys for the other team
23:54no more rocket balls
23:55it's a f**king bar
23:57it makes no sense
23:58when you don't know where it's going
24:00yeah who's he throwing that to?
24:01nobody was up
24:02I've seen those guys with a strong f**king arm
24:04that ball saying
24:04shoo
24:07shoo
24:08shoo
24:09shoo
24:09shoo
24:10and they're never
24:10yeah
24:12quarterbacks without rocket arms have to think
24:14quarterbacks who have rocket arms
24:17don't have to think
24:19and they think they can make any throw
24:22that's why
24:23a lot of those rocket arm guys
24:25throw a lot of picks
24:32a quarterback needs a rocket arm
24:35if he's in NASA
24:37I do not regard the first man in space as a sign of the weakening of the free world
24:43and we know that NASA's got a lot of problems now also
24:45I've seen plenty of quarterbacks that could throw the ball through a cinder block wall
24:51what a bazzard
24:52they couldn't play dead
24:54so if neither zombies nor quarterbacks need an arm that can double as a weapon on a fighter jet
25:00what is important?
25:03being a leader and dealing with the media and the pressures
25:05and all those other things those mental things other than just your arm
25:10the quarterback lives in a world of pressure
25:12how well he lives with it
25:14and reacts to it
25:16determines how good he is
25:19Bart Starr didn't have a rocket arm
25:27Vronjorski had a rocket arm
25:29Roman Gabriel had a rocket arm
25:32Kurt Warner doesn't have a rocket arm
25:35whoo
25:35got a rocket in your ass
25:37that a way to move
25:39the quarterback has to have a good arm
25:40but a rocket arm no
25:41no
25:42guys like Drew Brees
25:43Tom Brady
25:44those guys could learn how to throw deep
25:46even though when they were coming out of college it was
25:48oh Drew Brees' arm isn't as strong as Michael Vick
25:52Pennington successful he didn't have a rocket arm
25:54what a throw by Chad Pennington
25:57Chad Pennington had
25:59a terrible arm
26:01he had maybe the weakest arm for a perennial pro bowler
26:04Joe Montana successful he didn't have a rocket arm
26:07and boy did he rip a beauty
26:09a perfect pass
26:10to Jerry Rice
26:12helps
26:12helps
26:13we all want to be Joe Flacco
26:16hey he's cute
26:18don't you think so
26:20buttercup
26:22it's nice if he has one
26:23I don't think it's a prerequisite to be a great one
26:26you don't have to have a gun
26:29to be a successful one for a quarterback
26:31Joe Montana said
26:32I don't throw darts at balloons
26:34I throw balloons at darts
26:36case closed
26:40the number four football myth of all time
26:43you have to run to set up the pass
26:46one of the most cherished football myths
26:49is a misguided strategy
26:52it's the philosophy that says
26:53you must run the ball
26:55to set up the pass
26:56true
26:57no
26:57very true
26:58I don't think so
26:59myth of reality
27:00talking to an offensive lineman here now
27:02don't forget that
27:03that's reality
27:04eh
27:04when the coach says
27:06I've got to establish the running game
27:08he is
27:09if you'll excuse me camera
27:10he's full of
27:13John Madden says that all the time
27:15running opens up passing
27:16they're gonna have to do a little running
27:18forget that
27:19if I hear another guy talk about running to set up the pass
27:22I am going to throw a brick through my television
27:24typically you have to run the ball to set up the pass
27:27knock it off with that
27:28I'll go back to the 1960 Eagles
27:30they did not have a great running attack
27:32but they had
27:33Tommy McDonald
27:34Pete Lettslap
27:36and Bobby Walston
27:37to play tight end
27:38they started to implement
27:39pass first
27:40rather than run
27:41the Dutchman aim for McDonald
27:43great play
27:43well we definitely saw this year
27:45that
27:46the whole premise
27:47that you have to have a running game
27:49is a faulty man
27:50the running game has always been a cornerstone of the Pittsburgh Steelers
27:53but it wasn't this year
27:54what a throw
27:55you've got to give
27:56Roethlisberger credit
27:58and then
27:58you know Arizona
27:59they had the 32nd ranked running game
28:02Kurt Warner's not gonna get there
28:03they couldn't run it at all
28:05and yet
28:05Kurt Warner was still able to
28:07take
28:07this
28:08touchdown
28:09and they get all the way to the Super Bowl
28:111,2,3 Super Bowl
28:12yeah
28:14I think you need a mixture
28:16I think you
28:17need to
28:17run
28:18when they think pass
28:20and pass
28:21when they think run
28:22that's a great cliche
28:23yeah
28:23I think you can do it the other way around too
28:25yeah
28:26pass
28:27when they think run
28:28and run
28:28when they think pass
28:30what?
28:31in the percentage
28:32you're doing statistics
28:33statistics show you have to run
28:34except to pass
28:35but you get some quarterbacks
28:36you don't need to do that
28:37unless you have Tom Brady or Peyton Manning
28:39there's no quarterback
28:40who can consistently carry his team
28:43without having a running game
28:46there are those that say you must establish the run
28:49but unfortunately
28:50often by the time you may have established it
28:52you're behind 21 to nothing
28:53Bill Walsh
28:54was not going to use the run
28:56to set up the pass
28:57when you come underneath
28:58you got all the pursuit
28:58coming back toward you
28:59however
29:00the pass
29:01to set up the run
29:03and he would use certain passes
29:04as if they were run plays
29:06why bang your head against the wall
29:09if
29:09it's only four steps
29:11to go around it
29:12and Bill Walsh
29:15we proved
29:15winning a world championship
29:17you didn't need
29:18a star running game
29:19he ran late to finish the game
29:20teams that win
29:22have a lot of
29:22carries and a lot of yards
29:24because they're running out the clock
29:26you run
29:27to seal the win
29:28you pass
29:29to get the lead
29:32we threw the football
29:33so we could run the football at times
29:35because it makes it easier
29:39safeties
29:40will move back
29:41to guard against the pass
29:43and then you have to run
29:45touchdown Rams
29:46you don't need to establish the run
29:47because if you're running into the line
29:49for three yards of carry
29:50the whole game
29:51what are you trying to make
29:52the other team scared of?
29:53that you're running into the line
29:54for four yards of carry?
29:56you know there's two schools
29:56of thought
29:57run to set up the pass
29:59pass and set up the run
30:00that is true
30:00it's up to
30:01you have to run to set up the pass
30:03your offensive coordinator
30:04unless you pass to set up the run
30:06well
30:07you have to outscore the opponent
30:09that's
30:09that's a tenet that I believe in
30:12it helps
30:14coming up
30:16is it a myth to say
30:17our experts are cracking up?
30:19find out
30:21here's a leftover
30:22that didn't quite pass mustard
30:25how about pre-game meals?
30:28the Steelers are going to win
30:30because they're hungry
30:31they didn't have no breakfast today
30:33that you had to have steak
30:36and eggs
30:37steak and eggs
30:38and orange juice
30:40yeah that's what you had to eat
30:41before you played
30:41juice, juice, juice
30:44steak and eggs
30:45gotta be the worst steak
30:46before you go out and play
30:46it doesn't even digest
30:47my stomach doing the white tooth
30:49right now
30:50Mark Van Egan
30:51used to have lasagna
30:53and a milkshake
30:54that's what you're supposed to have
30:55something good like that
31:00free football myth of all time
31:02you can't lose your job
31:04due to injury
31:05that's a good rule
31:06that's it
31:06if we're all in grade school
31:07I think you can lose your job
31:09due to injury
31:09just ask
31:10Drew Bledsoe
31:20Drew Bledsoe got hurt
31:22and they went with Tom Brady
31:24Tom Brady's in the game
31:25you're right
31:26there's no reason to put
31:27Drew Bledsoe back in the game
31:29the Patriots are Super Bowl champions
31:35some of the NFL's greatest
31:37have gained and lost jobs
31:39due to injuries
31:40Joe Montana lost a job
31:42because of injury
31:43and if Joe Montana can lose a job
31:45because of injury
31:46anybody can
31:47you put the best player on the field
31:48the guy that's got the hot hand
31:50gives you the best opportunity to win
31:51and sometimes it's that
31:53Kurt Warner that steps in for Trent Green
31:55we will rally around Kurt Warner
31:56and we'll play good football
31:59and you never look back
32:00St. Louis the best football team in the world
32:04we've seen many examples
32:06where let's say a quarterback got hurt during the season
32:09we won seven with Elvis
32:11he's our captain
32:12then came back near the end of the year
32:14and the other quarterback had been playing well
32:15Shannon to throw
32:16touchdown
32:17Kansas City takes the lead
32:19the coach feels
32:20oh I gotta give it back to my number one guy
32:22Elvis is our quarterback for the duration
32:25as far as I'm concerned
32:26and that turned out to be the wrong decision
32:29Kerbeck into the end zone
32:30pass is gonna be knocked away
32:32the Bronco defense holds
32:35and while everyone thinks they won't lose their job due to injury
32:39they only need to hear two words
32:42Wally Pipp
32:43the Wally Pipp phenomena is alive and well in the NFL
32:46you know who Wally Pipp is?
32:48never heard of him
32:49Wally Pipp was a hell of a baseball player
32:51that was replaced when he got hurt
32:53no one ever heard of Wally Pipp again
32:55Wally Pipp
32:56couldn't have lost his job due to an injury
32:58but I think he sort of did
33:00we can all be Wally Pipp
33:02believe me
33:05Brett Favre played Lou Gehrig to Don Mikowski's Wally Pipp in 1992
33:10and Mikowski is down and hurting Max
33:12he is hurting
33:13and the rest was history
33:16history tonight
33:17as quarterback Brett Favre starts his 200th consecutive game behind center
33:21you start in this league for 200 straight games
33:24you get something special
33:28shaking up on the play is Greasy
33:30yeah looks like his right ankle Rick
33:32when Bob stayed on
33:33Greasy got his job back
33:37United went down for Morrill too
33:39and got his job back
33:41on the ground
33:42I knew that there was something that was pretty bad
33:45and he probably would have to come out of the ball game
33:47so I put Merrill Morrill into the ball game
33:49and all he did was make plays to help us win not only that game
33:52but then go undefeated the rest of the way
33:56but in the Super Bowl Shula made a decision that was the exception to the myth
34:01everything I decided on is based on the fact that Bob Greasy was now healthy
34:06that decision propelled the Dolphins to perfection
34:09the Dolphins have completed the greatest season in NFL history
34:15there's a lot of guys that have lost jobs due to injuries
34:18it's just one of those things coaches like to say to sound fair
34:21that's a fallacy
34:23that's from a coach who was too afraid to make a decision that he really wanted to
34:27Sims is starting to limp off the field here
34:31now we'll get Jeff Hostetler
34:33I agree that that's the case with a lot of teams
34:35but I think that's one of the dumbest things that I hear coaches say
34:38in the NFL you can always lose your job because of injury
34:42maybe in college, maybe in high school they have that role
34:44but in the NFL you have to win
34:46it's about 600 pounds on top of Schrader
34:48why do you want to go to the lesser player just because of some unwritten code
34:52it's just dumb, you want to win
34:53if you're injured you better get back out there quick
34:56because this train will move without you
34:58he really got hit
35:00life happens, got somebody else who's better than you, take a seat
35:03coming up, the new hit game, truth or myth?
35:06not a myth, very very true
35:09I think it's a bunch of bulk
35:11every team an equal chance to win
35:13but is that a myth or a fact?
35:15parody is a good word
35:17I like that every year, every team feels they have a chance
35:21it's good for the game
35:22I understand where people love the dynasties, they love the Steelers, they love the Cowboys
35:28but I also love the fact that the Seattle Seahawks, the Arizona Cardinals could make it to a Super Bowl
35:34the Arizona Cardinals are going to their first Super Bowl
35:37but the Browns and Lions have been left behind to fail when others flourish
35:42I think there are still some teams that are going to be left at the bus stop when the parody
35:47bus drives on
35:50Paul Tagliabue's greatest word, parody, it's what he wanted
35:53he got it, and it's still not quite hit Detroit yet
35:55the Lions fall to 0-1-16
35:57Detroit Lions!
35:58they do! they do! they do! they do! they do!
36:01wow
36:01why it's
36:02bad
36:07all myth of all time
36:08defense wins championships
36:12defense wins championships
36:13defense wins championships
36:15I'm a defensive guy
36:16if I'm not on the field
36:17we have no chance of winning a ball game
36:19that shouldn't even be on the list
36:20defense gets the offense the ball back again
36:23defense do win championships
36:25I don't think that that is a myth
36:27even though I play offense I would tend to agree
36:29most times defense does win championships
36:32case in point with Oakland
36:34playing against Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl
36:35Oakland had number one offense
36:37and Tampa Bay have the top defense
36:39and then
36:40they shut them down
36:41the defense got us to the Super Bowl
36:43and they're trying to win it for us
36:45head to the side
36:46at the 40
36:47Derrick Bucks 30
36:48there it is
36:49we're going to win the Super Bowl
36:54defense does not win championship
36:56it will give you a chance
36:57it will give you a chance
36:58and your offense has to win it for you
37:00the 1999 Rams number one ranked offense
37:03beat almost everyone on their way to the Super Bowl
37:06if you have the type of offense that we had
37:08your defense can be average
37:10and your offense can win you games
37:12touchdown Rams
37:14who are we home
37:14their defense what's that
37:151999 Rams have proven
37:17that a good offense can win a championship too
37:20that's a game
37:21it's over
37:21and if they didn't prove it
37:23then the 97 and 98 Broncos proved it
37:26this one's for John
37:28if they didn't prove it
37:30then the 1980 Raiders proved it
37:32this was our finest hour
37:34this was the finest hour
37:35in the history of the Oakland Raiders
37:36when it really comes down to crunch time
37:38so often
37:39that offense is going to be the one
37:41that's going to have to take you down the field
37:42to produce your points
37:43Don Correale's Cardinals of the 70's
37:46had a red hot offense
37:47their defense was not
37:49we didn't have a very good defense
37:50we could have scored
37:51thousands of points on any team we wanted to
37:54we just didn't have a defense
37:56that could actually stop anyone
37:57Puget had no trouble beating his man
38:00any quarterback who has won multiple Super Bowl titles
38:04has done so with a great defense
38:06if you had talked to Terry Bradshaw
38:09as a blonde bomber
38:10he would have to say yes
38:11that's because Joe Green and Jack Lambert
38:13would kill them
38:13that's ridiculous
38:14your defense wins championships all the time
38:17but if you
38:18and Mel Blunt would kill them
38:19you look back at history
38:21Pittsburgh was
38:22but Pittsburgh's offense
38:24still had Terry Bradshaw
38:25Mike Webster
38:26Swan Stallworth
38:27in the Hall of Fame
38:28Green Bay Packers had a great defense
38:30but people still know them
38:32as an offense
38:33what we're trying to get is a seal here
38:34and a seal here
38:36and try to run this play
38:37in the alley
38:38they won their first two
38:40congratulations
38:41for the second year in a row
38:45if you have a great defense
38:48one of the best of all time
38:49you don't have to do that much on offense
38:51if you're the Ravens
38:53you can win the Super Bowl alone
38:55with that kind of a defense
38:56those 2,000 Ravens
38:57I don't believe they average more than
38:5920 points a game on offense
39:00they were
39:01come on D
39:02do what you do best
39:03when Baltimore and Ray Lewis
39:05won the Super Bowl
39:06obviously they were a defensive team
39:08and you can say
39:09the defense won that Super Bowl
39:15every time I look at the scoreboard
39:17it's the team with the most points
39:19that wins the game
39:20Montana to Taylor
39:22they win 92 yards in 11 plays
39:26the Pittsburgh Steelers
39:27had the number one defense
39:28we win the game
39:29this is a legendary defense
39:30but when it came down to the end
39:32the offense won that championship
39:34Ben
39:35stambles around
39:36throws the back corner of the end zone
39:37D'Antonio in
39:38touchdown
39:38great teams win championships
39:41you gotta have offense
39:42you gotta have defense
39:43and it helps to have special teams too
39:45the rules have changed so much
39:47in favor of the offense
39:48in the passing game
39:49that I think defense winning
39:51championship
39:53touchdown
39:53stay tuned to see what our number one myth
39:56well it's not a myth
39:57six of the last eight Super Bowls
40:00before this came out
40:03the average team
40:04had the 11th ranked offense
40:06and the 6th ranked defense
40:09there were seven pick sixes in the game
40:11by the winning team
40:13two of them
40:14were in one possession games
40:16whereas those teams
40:16didn't have those
40:17pick sixes
40:19they would have lost
40:25didn't prevent our analysts
40:27from getting fired up
40:28hate it
40:29hate it
40:30I can't stand it
40:31that's the biggest myth in sports
40:32the number one football myth of all time
40:36the prevent defense
40:37prevents you from winning
40:39number one
40:40I cringe when I hear people say
40:42prevent
40:42defense
40:43will prevent you from winning
40:45a football game
40:46show me the proof
40:47a true prevent defense
40:49is almost a hell
40:50mary defense
40:51in which everybody goes deep
40:53oh my
40:53they're talking about
40:54playing a loose song
40:56don't get up and jam
40:57on a man coverage
40:58and most of the time
40:59it's gonna work
41:00Brady takes the snap
41:01back to pass
41:02steps up
41:03and
41:03it's already a miss
41:05it worked against
41:07an undefeated
41:0818-0 Patriots team
41:10that has scored the most points
41:11in NFL history
41:13so
41:14why wouldn't it work
41:14against anybody else
41:16and
41:17it is
41:18incomplete
41:19the New York Giants
41:20have knocked off
41:21the New England Patriots
41:22if you've got a lead
41:23making the other team
41:24move the ball down the field
41:26make them use up the clock
41:27it makes sense
41:28it does mean
41:29that the team is gonna gain some yards
41:31but
41:31if you commit to stopping the team
41:34the way you tried to stop them
41:35through the first three quarters of the game
41:37you are going to risk
41:40getting beat by the big play
41:41and into the end zone
41:42for the touchdown
41:47whoever came up with this pre
41:48prevent what?
41:50you fight
41:51fight
41:51fight
41:52the whole game
41:52not to give up any yards
41:54and then all of a sudden
41:55you're dropping back ten
41:56you're giving up ten at a clip
41:57it ruins your mentality
41:59and then you get down
42:00to your goal line
42:00you can't get it back
42:01Tavis is free
42:02so you're asking a guy in a heavyweight fight
42:05take a few rounds off
42:06go slow
42:06and then we're gonna bring you back
42:07in about the 14th round
42:08doesn't work that way
42:10PDQ 1200
42:11this fourth quarter defensive strategy
42:13that tries to stop big offensive games
42:16can get groans from fans
42:18the question is
42:19prevent defense
42:20and that would be the prevent defense
42:23yes is the answer to that
42:26the idea that it never works
42:28that is correct
42:29that it doesn't make sense
42:31that's a fact
42:32well it's not true
42:34it's a 1960 championship game
42:36the Eagles took the lead
42:37late in the game
42:38and they went into a classic
42:40prevent defense
42:41where they rushed three
42:42dropped everybody else off
42:43the final play of the game
42:45Bart Starr drops back
42:46takes the only play that's available
42:48and Jim Taylor then has to run it
42:49from about the 20
42:50at the 8 yard line
42:51Chuck Bednarik made the tackle
42:53and the final seconds ran off
42:55the Eagles win their first world championship
42:56since 1949
42:57that's exactly what it's designed for
43:00that's exactly the way it's supposed to work
43:02so while we already know
43:03that regular old defense
43:04may not win championships
43:06history proves that the prevent defense can
43:09just ask the 99 Rams
43:11time runs up
43:12that's it
43:13that's it
43:14we win
43:14very very high percentage
43:16a winning percentage
43:17of prevent defenses
43:19prevent you from losing
43:20they help you win the football game
43:22it's over
43:23the world championship
43:26that man
43:27genie
43:28in the prevent defense
43:30you knew
43:31you knew
43:32New England was going to go down and score
43:34touchdown
43:35Randy Moss
43:36I'll tell you the coaches that used to do it
43:38John Robinson
43:39Joe Walton
43:41they didn't last long
43:42so prevent defenses
43:43are you listening head coaches
43:44also prevent you
43:45from keeping your job
43:47what have you been doing all day other than
43:49preventing touchdown
43:50preventing first down
43:52they ain't get it
43:52they ain't get it
43:53preventing deal goals
43:54the kick has been blocked
43:55all of a sudden you get to the end of the game
43:57and these new signals come out
44:00no
44:01uh uh
44:03what's the difference
44:03to prevent you from winning
44:05how many times we heard that
44:06but
44:07when a nickel back
44:08does make an interception
44:09around the goal line
44:10at the end of the game
44:11intercepted by the Giants
44:12and that is it
44:13the prevents defense
44:14helped win that game
44:15you know if you go into a situation
44:16where you
44:17unnecessarily
44:18trying to put pressure on a quarterback
44:19creating a one-on-one situation
44:21outside
44:22the critical part of the game
44:23and the defensive back
44:24falls down
44:25you get beat
44:29here's the coach who had a perfect season
44:32in multiple number one defenses
44:35here's the winningest coach in NFL history
44:39I think he knows what he's talking about
44:43I mean
44:45prevent defense
44:46if you have the right personnel
44:48you shouldn't lose an eight on four
44:50eight on five
44:53you have three four extra defenders
44:55to
44:56to cover the people
44:58you weren't prevent defense to lose
45:00you need better talent
45:03you're gonna want that prevent defense
45:05but here's what's even worse than the prevent defense
45:08is the prevent offense
45:10whoa there
45:11this myth-busting stampede
45:13What?
45:13has reached its end
45:14but before we write off
45:16a final preventative word
45:18the prevent defense
45:19hate it
45:20hate it
45:21I would call that one of the greatest innovations
45:23I can't stand it
45:24in NFL history
45:25I've always hated the prevent
45:27and
45:27I will continue to hate the prevent
45:29I don't think it does get the respect it deserves
45:31it works more often than people think
45:34prevent defense has never once worked
45:36it doesn't work every time
45:37what?
45:37but nothing football works every time
45:39but to me
45:40I know I'm on a soapbox now
45:42what's worse than the prevent defense
45:44is the prevent offense
45:45in your face
45:46game over
45:47you're not a little more
45:48uh it might be so good
