00:00the number 10 draft year of all time 1996 that's good number 10 with the first selection
00:07arvin harrison eddie george zach thomas terrell owens the first round the new york jets select
00:14keishon johnson and receiver and the jets have just won the super bowl people are all swooning
00:24for the sc golden boy and then immediately things get sideways when he's the second best
00:29uh jets pass catcher behind wayne krabat it's like a family vacation it starts out good
00:34as soon as you drive and then someone's got to pee and then your father's hand comes over in the
00:37back
00:38seat and someone's getting hit even though keishon never lived up to the height our number 10 draft
00:43was the best year ever for wide receivers leading the right what a what a bust two-time pro bowler
00:50back-to-back 1100 yard seasons what a what a what a terrible draft pick that keishon johnson was
01:00in as soon as he left the jets he's won a super bowl what a terrible draft pick that guy
01:06was
01:08miss me with that way with hall of famers marvin harrison and terrell owens
01:15i see you bro i told you they hate to love me the wideouts taken that year combined for 29
01:22pro
01:23bowl appearances and have outpaced the next closest receiving class by more than a thousand receptions
01:28and 10 000 yard what crap by horn remember horn because he's the first one to have the stupidest
01:35celebration ever when he pulled a cell phone and i think it was a star tack do you remember the
01:39star
01:40attack he would have been better off with a telegraph
01:44good draft in baltimore 1996 the baltimore ravens
01:55the ravens did something that's only been done one of a time draft two hall of famers
02:00in the first round that'll never happen again i gotta win a nice little rib shot
02:04i think that should have been a walk-off for ozzy newson i would not stop talking about it ever
02:10i know we were talking about deep dish pizza but did i ever tell you about the time that i
02:14drafted
02:15jonathan ogden and ray lewis in one draft
02:19how about getting brian dawkins in the second round oh yeah best safety ever to play for the eagles
02:25i'm like michael jackson before he went crazy i'll be there i'm gonna be there every time
02:31it's intercepted by dawkins at the 40 45 50 45 40 brian dawkins has gone all the way in for
02:38a touchdown
02:40the linebackers that came out of this these guys were the cornerstones of their defense
02:45zach thomas picked off by zach thomas he's got it away in touchdown miami
02:50bruski was in this draft what is better than yelling bruski it's the most american football
02:58thing you could do bruski
03:03now as great as the receivers and linebackers might have been the quarterbacks not so much
03:08the talent was so thin at the position 1996 was one of the rare years when a quarterback wasn't
03:14selected in the first round watch out for discrediting spence fisher's career
03:20okay because that's a little unfair the first quarterback to come off the board
03:24was journeyman tony banks in round two
03:29it's intercepted whoever threw the trigger on that man wow wow wow
03:3896 has got to be way higher because not only do you have five hall of famers in there
03:42not only do you have some of the greatest wide receivers ever in there
03:48but adam vinatieri doesn't even get drafted and he's going to be a hall of famer
03:54this is total quarterback bias here because of it buried at number 10 it's ridiculous
04:02the number nine draft year of all time 1971
04:06cliche says the nfl is a passing league now but it seems back in 1971 they put a high premium
04:12on the
04:13quarterback position as well archie i love the quarterback balance of that group you had about
04:18six guys i think you could either say were decent starting quarterbacks all the way up to some of
04:22the best jim plunkett goes first overall they have archie manning dan pastorini you had joe thighs me
04:28had ken anderson and then you throw on lynn dickie lynn dick dickie comma lynn quarterback lynn
04:34dickie was an outstanding performer and leader and this is obviously a top 10 draft class
04:431971 like that's uh a solid quarter of a quarterbacks to start a conference championship game
04:52from 78 to 83 those were past three plunkett anderson theismann
05:04had three quarterbacks taken with the first three picks that was the first time that ever happened
05:09jim plunkett went to new england with the first pick archie manning went to the saints with the
05:14second pick and dan pastorini went to houston with the third pick interesting career trajectories for
05:20all three of these guys jim plunkett the late bloomer i think patriots fans probably look at him and
05:25say he's a bust right but he goes on to greatness in oakland and la jim plunkett by matching as
05:30great
05:30a comeback as fludge has ever witnessed was an unlikely super bowl champion and a likelier
05:35two-time super bowl champion jim congratulations on another super bowl trial
05:42archie manning went to the saints of course and ended up being a fantastic quarterback manning is
05:48a consummate quarterback possessing the knowledge and touch to split defensive zones
05:54archie manning was a winning quarterback in every sense except his win-loss record
05:59he was running for his life and this was a 10-year career in new orleans
06:06terrible and then dan pastorini went to the houston oilers which was a good team
06:11pretty pretty fast dan pastorini what a great touchdown
06:15problem was they were in the same division as the pittsburgh steelers
06:19the dominant nfl team of the 1970s so it was tough for him to break through
06:26the steelers always had great drafts in those in those years but that was a particularly strong
06:32one jack ham the steelers came away with the foundation of the steel curtain 1971 saw the
06:40steelers grabbed white white ernie holmes and future hall of famer jack ham it seemed like they
06:47were the only team drafting ham wasn't the only hall of famer drafted in 1971
06:55jack youngblood who is as tough a guy as there is in nfl history jack youngblood nobody wanted to
07:01block that guy on that rams defensive line perennial all-pro dan deardorff was unmatched at tackle
07:08before becoming a mainstay in the broadcast booth hall of famer dan deardorff battled in the trenches
07:14dan just made a friend
07:21john riggins was up near the top of that draft went to the jets and had middling success and he
07:26came back and had just a phenomenal second chapter playing for the washington redskins
07:39look there's a couple of things to look at number one you get joe theisman's perm
07:47with ken anderson's mustache those two follicle features alone i think make this an immortal
07:56class the number eight draft year of all time 1967 this is the aim of the 1967 nfl draft
08:07yeah great hall of famers drafted but steve spurrier was drafted three
08:22i think we got a toss out 1967 we are not tossing out 1967
08:32bubba smith was was a hell of a first overall pick with the strength of a tiger and the arms
08:37of an octopus
08:38bubba became a holy terror to the enemy the guy's a beast i mean physically he was enormous
08:44i don't think anybody thought they could block bubba smith they couldn't they would start saying
08:49kill bubba kill kill bubba kill the one to kill him
09:01i remember bubba smith as much for his acting as i did for his football prowess
09:06i had my own way of tackling i used to grab the whole backfield then i threw guys out until
09:12i
09:12found the one with the ball he makes the police academy movies
09:21when i think of that draft i also think of the fact willy lanier was part of it
09:24down up front baby
09:27well his nickname was contact so that kind of gives you an idea
09:31very intimidating but also very intelligent
09:35let's go give it here
09:39you always kind of had the feeling watching him
09:41that once they set their formation even before the ball was snapped he knew exactly where the ball was going
09:47alan page he's legitimately maybe the best to ever play his position
09:52alan page number 88
09:54he is performance
09:55he is the best
09:57there was gene upshot
09:58len barney
10:001971 earned him the honor of being the first lineman ever to be
10:05named the most valuable player in the nfl
10:10alan page
10:11leaving aside his talent as a football player he's a hall of fame judge
10:16ken houston the rookie who was listed as the 214th draft choice proves that sometimes you have to dig deep
10:24to find gold
10:27kenny houston is the greatest strong safety in history
10:31great in every facet of his game
10:35perfect at safety position he was never out of position i mean he played the play exactly the way it
10:41was on the board
10:42when number 27 ken houston takes off his glasses he does not become superman
10:48the 11 year veteran becomes super safety one of the finest defensive backs the nfl has ever known
11:01it's the first common draft between the afl and the nfl
11:05eight hall of famers this is a very very deep draft that really helped the sport
11:10nine hall of famers
11:11the number seven draft year of all time
11:142007
11:17the oakland raiders select quarterback jamarcus russell
11:23jamarcus russell is huge he's good in size but they also gotta put in the factor of like
11:27after you give him all kinds of money how much honey
11:29buns is he gonna buy
11:31sometimes he was tipping the scales
11:32probably like
11:36too sexy
11:38uh no he was
11:40he was he was
11:41knocking out the door of 300
11:43has it that russell ballooned to nearly 300 pounds
11:47an inability to control his weight along with poor play
11:51ended the top overall pick's career after only three seasons
11:55a lot of people forecasting brady quinn the number three
11:59oh my gosh brady quinn falling in the draft
12:03the miami dolphins select ted kin
12:06it may be a while for him back there in the green room now
12:10quinn was finally taken by the browns with the 22nd pick
12:14but he never became the franchise quarterback cleveland needed
12:18it can't be near the top because you gotta have some quarterbacks
12:21and you can't have the number one guy in the whole draft eat his way out of the league
12:29the number seven draft year overcame a bad quarterback class
12:32thanks to some of the best players to ever suit up at their positions
12:36yes sir
12:37and travin johnson is one of the most amazing receivers i ever watched play the game
12:42that's what people look for in the draft now like
12:44i need a guy with a wingspan like a two-car garage
12:47megatron you are crazy
12:49that's in the business
12:50they want to be
12:53james peterson
12:54patrick willis
12:55daryl revis
12:57marshawn lynch
12:59a lot of
13:00you think they're candy
13:01joe thomas made office lineman style
13:03like he's gonna be the first office lineman with his own shoe deal
13:06yo you got the new joe thomas
13:07yeah i got the jt's
13:09daryl revis
13:10a shutdown cornerback in a league where
13:13every rule is gonna favor the offense
13:15favor points
13:16i mean revis island
13:17that's maybe the greatest nickname you see in this era
13:20adrian peterson just amazing
13:22the guy came back
13:23from not one acl tear
13:25but two acl tears
13:27in the following year rush for a thousand years
13:29bulldogs to the end zone
13:31touchdown
13:36patrick willis he's one of the greatest linebackers in this era
13:40i mean helped the team get to the super bowl
13:47marshal yanda was the biggest school of the draft
13:50when the ravens picked him in the third round
13:52he's one of the great guards of my generation
13:55extremely durable
13:56extremely tough
13:58super smart
14:00the guy that should be considered
14:04into those future hall of famers
14:07reminder
14:08joe thomas is the guy saying
14:10marshal yanda is a hall of famer
14:12he's his
14:13pro bowl
14:14all pro comp
14:17he
14:17he
14:19they're rivals
14:20so he didn't have any reason to say that about him
14:26for famers
14:2717 of the first 32 picks
14:30may release one pro bowl
14:32during their careers
14:33five a little bit of a hole
14:35he's like moving
14:36he's across the 40
14:37midfield
14:3845
14:39he's on the wrong ledge
14:4040
14:40pushes the man
14:4135
14:41look at him back
14:42he's down to 20
14:4415
14:44he's gonna go
14:45he is gonna go
14:47touchdown
14:48seahawks
14:49oh my word
14:51so if you're hitting on half the picks in day one
14:54it's pretty strong
14:56number six draft year of all time
14:581981
15:02this is the all time defense first draft
15:05in the first two rounds
15:06six held famers were taken
15:08and each one had a major impact on the game
15:11during the 1980s
15:13and he's LT the greatest defensive player of our time
15:15he put the fear of god in everyone
15:21that guy was so vicious
15:25quarterbacks
15:26they were like going to the bathroom in their pants
15:32then here comes Ronnie Lott
15:34arguably
15:34the greatest safety the game's ever seen
15:37oh and she nailed
15:39Ronnie Lott
15:40keep coming up
15:41and really put a belt on it
15:43Ronnie Lott
15:44would not come out of a game
15:45over cutting off his own finger
15:48so when you are that demented
15:50it should have been illegal
15:52letting him play in the NFL
15:54Lawrence Taylor
15:55and Ronnie Lott
15:56boom
15:57number one already
15:59Kenny Easley
16:01Kenny Easley was the man dude
16:05when I was a kid
16:06I got Kenny Easley's football card
16:08and I was like
16:08this dude's badass
16:10I love that guy
16:11well I'm vicious
16:12I play the game in a vicious manner
16:15my game is an aggressive type of game
16:19Mike Singletary
16:20did you know he made eyes sometimes
16:21like he did like a thing with his eyes
16:23I like that kind of party
16:24I like this kind of party
16:32Ricky Jackson
16:33the dome patrol
16:34he was the first guy
16:36that I remember
16:37not wearing thigh pads
16:39so that he could run faster
16:41and he's not lacking confidence
16:43I think he probably thinks
16:45he's good for six and a half saps
16:46now
16:51on defense
16:52Howie long played
16:53with skills and intensity
16:54that would make him
16:55the year's most honored line line
16:57I don't know
16:58what ever happened to that guy
16:59or if he ever had any children
17:01or anything
17:01but I do remember
17:02that he was very good
17:03at football at one point
17:04in his life
17:05is he a person to work
17:10the lone offensive
17:11hall of famer
17:12was Russ Grimm
17:13Grimm around with fellow
17:1581 draftee Mark May
17:16became key cogs
17:18on the Red Spins
17:19renowned
17:19Cogs offensive line
17:21this group
17:22has fans
17:24in the stands
17:24dressing up
17:25grown men
17:26dressed like pigs
17:28in women's clothing
17:32usually
17:33lads call it a bar
17:34I'll be you know
17:35a little desperate
17:35oh we're talking about
17:36something else
17:37the guys have been those
17:37but that's gotta be
17:39the greatest unit
17:40of all time
17:40as an offensive line
17:41that 1981 class
17:43has to be at least
17:44top two
17:44three hall of famers
17:46in the second round
17:48that is a great draft class
17:51and now
17:52the number five
17:52draft year of all time
17:541964
17:57I didn't even know
17:58they did a draft back then
17:59in 1964
18:01basically it's a bunch of guys
18:02smoking cigarettes
18:04having some whiskey
18:05Mel Rufo
18:06Roger Staubach
18:07and just waiting around
18:09playing cards
18:10for somebody to call a name
18:11and then they win like
18:1212 rounds
18:13me and you could've
18:14got drafted
18:15you could've been right there
18:15really symposium
18:17right together
18:17I watched the draft
18:19to watch Roger Goodell
18:20get food
18:20come on Philly
18:22come on
18:23there you go
18:24and then awkwardly
18:26dap up a bunch of
18:27college kids
18:27and it didn't have that
18:29so to me
18:29this draft doesn't belong
18:30on the list
18:361964 produced
18:3711 hall of famers
18:39most of any draft
18:40in NFL history
18:41some of the standouts
18:43include Paul Warfield
18:44Paul Krause
18:45Charlie Taylor
18:47Leroy Kelly
18:48and Carl Eller
18:50Carl Eller
18:51was a huge part
18:52of those Vikings teams
18:54that made four Super Bowls
18:55Jim Marshall's the more
18:56famous one
18:56but Carl Eller
18:57was probably
18:58a better defensive end
19:00I gave him a good liquor
19:01he was absolutely
19:01a better defensive end
19:03but
19:05don't
19:05don't
19:06don't
19:07take away any credit
19:08from Jim Marshall
19:08yeah
19:09I gave him a good liquor
19:1064 even had a
19:12great special teamer
19:13Pete
19:14taken in the 12th
19:16change the sport
19:17to game's first
19:18soccer style kicker
19:21the 1964 draft
19:23is also noteworthy
19:24for some of the coaches
19:25it produced
19:26Monty Kiffin
19:26was one of the top
19:28defensive coordinators
19:29in the NFL
19:29for a long time
19:30we're gonna win
19:31the Super Bowl
19:32Howard Mudd
19:33one of the best
19:34offensive line coaches
19:35of the modern era
19:37and
19:38the Hall of Famer
19:39Bill Parcells
19:40was drafted
19:41in the 8th round
19:42by the Detroit Lions
19:43as a linebacker
19:44out of Wichita State
19:49unfortunately
19:50the top overall pick
19:52is one that has
19:53faded into obscurity
19:54is it like
19:55Dave Star
19:58I got it
19:59Dave Moses
20:01I don't
20:03what do we got
20:04Dave Parks
20:05oh yeah
20:05the famous Dave Parks
20:07when you play
20:08the 49ers
20:09you try and
20:11shut the lid
20:11on Dave Parks
20:13and hope
20:13for the best
20:15although forgotten
20:16Parks was talented
20:18in his second season
20:19he caught 80 passes
20:21for over 1300 yards
20:22and 12 touchdowns
20:24nobody reached
20:25those levels
20:26for another
20:2616 years
20:33be the number
20:33one draft
20:34of all time
20:35but it is
20:36the longest
20:37taking nearly
20:3822 hours
20:39to complete
20:4022 hours
20:42for one draft
20:43that's insane
20:448 hours
20:45for the first round
20:46it's a good thing
20:46it was in a hotel
20:47ballroom
20:48you had to go upstairs
20:48and go to sleep
20:49oh so it's like
20:50it is today
20:51like how
20:52we get together
20:53pick the guy you like
20:54and let's go
20:55it took the Cowboys
20:576 hours
20:57to pick Hall of Famer
20:58Mel Renfro
20:59because they were
21:00waiting for a
21:01medical report
21:02could you imagine
21:03our number 5
21:06of the Cowboys
21:06pick here
21:09let's go back over
21:10Mel's best available
21:14mock Dallas's
21:15methodical approach
21:16if you want
21:17but it also
21:18enabled them
21:19to land
21:19Hall of Famers
21:20Roger Staubach
21:21and Bob Hayes
21:22eventually
21:23helped transform
21:24the Cowboys
21:25into one of the
21:26NFL's best teams
21:32you have so many
21:34really solid
21:35Hall of Fame names
21:36and there aren't
21:37other drafts
21:38that can boast
21:38that many guys
21:41the number 4 draft
21:42year of all time
21:432011
21:47we welcome you
21:48to the 2011
21:49NFL draft
21:51that interestingly
21:52enough arrives here
21:53in a lockout
22:00I agree with you
22:01we see these players
22:03being selected
22:04and we don't know
22:05if they're actually
22:05going to be on the
22:06football field
22:07everyone said
22:08well the rookies
22:08have no chance
22:09because they're not
22:10getting any practice
22:11at all
22:11as they enter the NFL
22:12and those rookies
22:14came in
22:15and a lot of them
22:15dominated right away
22:17say hello
22:18from the rookies
22:18Von Miller

22:52is make plays
22:52the 2011 draft class

22:5716 players
22:58are all pro bowlers

23:23gifted athlete
23:24goodness gracious
23:26that list right there
23:27is phenomenal man
23:29Cam Jordan
23:31the 2011 draft
23:33wasn't perfect
23:34after all
23:35the Ravens
23:36missed their first pick
23:37we're sort of in limbo
23:39Baltimore may have passed
23:41I don't know
23:42we're trying to find this out
23:43they're like on their phone
23:44playing
23:45what was that
23:46oh that was our pick

23:54select
23:54Jonathan Baldwin
23:56oh
23:58okay
24:00anybody want
24:00Jimmy Smith
24:01he's still on the board
24:01the Baltimore Ravens
24:03select
24:03Jimmy Smith
24:04Jimmy Smith
24:05is the guy
24:06I guess
24:06that they wanted
24:07reminder
24:09the Ravens
24:10blew this draft
24:12and still went
24:12to the AFC Championship
24:14that year
24:14and still won
24:15the Super Bowl
24:16the next year
24:17that's how good
24:18they are
24:20anyway so
24:21no harm no foul
24:23everybody say
24:24he was our guy
24:25all along
24:26our number four draft
24:28was also lacking
24:29in the quarterback
24:30department
24:31Christian Ponder
24:32Blaine Gabbert
24:34and Jake Locker
24:35oof
24:36with some of the QB bust
24:38and the lockout
24:39marring the event
24:40what the heck
24:40is the 2011 draft
24:42still top five material
24:44maybe
24:45the 2011 draft
24:46is the number one draft
24:48of all time
24:49this is an entire
24:50all generation team
24:51and you guys are pulling out
24:52black and white footage
24:53and you've got
24:54Damon Amandallora
24:55is going to come on here
24:56and wax poetic
24:57about the 72 draft
24:58he wasn't born yet
24:59can we give some love
25:00to the current players
25:03I think that's the end
25:04the number three draft year
25:05of all time
25:071989
25:09the 1989 NFL draft
25:11is about to begin
25:12you look at the top five
25:13of this draft
25:14these guys are just
25:15absolute legends
25:17you're getting one of the
25:18greatest quarterbacks
25:19of all time
25:20Troy Aikman
25:21Troy Aikman's the MVP
25:23arguably the greatest
25:24running back of all time
25:25Barry Sanders
25:27he's well over 2,000 now
25:30one of the greatest
25:31pass rushers of all time
25:32Derek Thomas
25:33Derek Thomas
25:34whacking the quarterback
25:36you've got arguably
25:37the greatest cornerback
25:38of all time
25:39Deion Sanders
25:40Sanders dancing
25:42for a long touchdown
25:43to have that level
25:44of talent
25:45in the same year
25:46is amazing
25:49as good a top five
25:50as we've ever seen
25:54we have had a machine gun
25:56start to this first round
25:57Troy Aikman
25:58Tony Mandarich
25:59Barry Sanders
26:00Derek Thomas
26:00Deion Sanders
26:01four Hall of Famers
26:03go in the top five
26:04and who makes the cover
26:06of Sports Illustrated
26:07the one guy
26:08who doesn't make
26:09the Hall of Fame
26:10Tony Mandarich
26:11how fun
26:12Mandarich was the one
26:14he was this
26:17just like Troy Aikman
26:18he was a no brainer
26:20this guy's gonna be
26:20a great NFL player
26:21we have not seen
26:22anything like Mandarich
26:23this guy's 305 pounds
26:25and runs just about
26:27the same speed
26:27that I ran
26:28when I came out
26:29of college
26:30so this guy
26:30can play football
26:31the incredible bulk
26:32the incredible bust
26:34he was the second player
26:35taken in the whole draft
26:37and said he was gonna do this
26:39he was gonna do that
26:40he didn't do anything
26:42when you consider
26:43no he
26:44no he did something
26:45Madden
26:46he got beaten
26:47that's what he did
26:48who's surrounded by
26:51probably the worst pick
26:52in NFL history
26:5559
26:55is famous for Tony Mandarich
26:58being a bust
26:59but then you start
26:59going through the guys
27:00that made it
27:01guys like Andre Risen
27:03had really solid
27:04careers
27:05let's go Risen
27:06Risen's got it
27:08touchdown
27:08what a great catch
27:10by Andre Risen
27:11Eric Metcalf
27:13running back Texas
27:15Eric Metcalf
27:16he was very
27:21pretty good
27:22as an all-purpose player
27:24he was an explosive guy
27:26touchdown
27:27touchdown
27:29Eric Metcalf
27:30oh hey
27:31wait a minute
27:32we can't leave 89
27:33without talking one dude
27:34Steve Atwater man
27:36Steve Atwater
27:36showtime baby
27:37showtime in the last
27:38he just lights up guys
27:46go ahead
27:47cue up the Steve Atwater hit
27:49on Christian Akoya
27:50right
27:51now
27:52yes
27:53yes
28:00I can make the case
28:01that the 1989 draft
28:03could be number one
28:03when you talk about
28:04four of the top five
28:05picks
28:06wearing gold jacket
28:07Steve Atwater later
28:08in the first round
28:10that could easily be seen
28:11as the best draft class
28:12of all time
28:14the number two draft year
28:16of all time
28:181961
28:18yeah it's 1961
28:20how are we putting 61
28:22near the top of this list
28:24how
28:25I wasn't even in
28:26my father's sack
28:28at 61
28:29this was when
28:31picks were called in
28:32on a pay phone
28:33I doubt we can run that
28:35on the show
28:36there's like no strategy
28:38there's no research
28:40being done
28:41we shouldn't even be
28:42allowed to talk
28:47talk about anything
28:49before I was born
28:51because I'm already
28:52the oldest guy
28:52on this show
28:53no
28:53this can't
28:54wait a minute
28:55uh
28:56just wait until
28:57Raiden comes back
28:59be that high
29:00who was in the 61 draft
29:02we thought you'd never ask
29:05seven hall
29:06guys who came in
29:07who had
29:08a massive influence
29:10on the league
29:11and the way the game
29:12is played
29:12I don't even have to say
29:14the first names
29:14of some of these players
29:15and you know
29:16who I'm talking about
29:17when you look at that
29:18I understand
29:19why this would be
29:20right number two
29:231961
29:24Mike Ditka
29:25the Ironman
29:26Mike Ditka
29:27late in the first quarter
29:28the TD parade
29:29begins with Raiden Ditka
29:30combining for a 14 yard
29:32Mike Ditka
29:33was uh
29:34way ahead of his time
29:35tight ends
29:36when I came into the game
29:37were kind of an extension
29:37to the offensive tackle
29:38boom
29:39they blocked most of the time
29:40Callis
29:41had the vision
29:41to understand
29:42what a tight end could do
29:43if he could do
29:44more than block
29:45they don't make him
29:46any better than Mike Ditka
29:48you are gonna get
29:49hurt playing this man
29:50Ditka grabs another
29:52Bukic toss
29:52and bludgeones
29:53into the end zone
29:54he's basically
29:55in my view
29:56guy
30:02Bob Lilly
30:02was a blue chip
30:03pedigree
30:04defensive lineman
30:05that the Cowboys
30:06drafted
30:07and Lilly proved
30:08to be everything
30:08that they thought
30:09he was gonna be
30:09and then saw
30:12I think Bob Lilly
30:13is the greatest
30:14defensive tackle
30:14ever
30:24football has many
30:25superstars
30:26but only one
30:27superman
30:28Deacon Jones
30:30the first of the real
30:32great pass rushers
30:35quicker off the snap
30:36than anybody
30:37playing in the NFL
30:38at that time
30:39nobody could block
30:40them
30:40selected in the
30:4214th round
30:43the Deacon
30:44made teams pay
30:45dearly
30:45for passing
30:46on him
30:46and Deacon
30:48literally
30:48put the fear
30:50of God
30:50into whoever
30:51he played against
30:52I'm gonna kill
30:53that mother
30:53and that was
30:54my whole approach
30:55in the game
30:56I wanted to put
30:57as much fear
30:57into his heart
30:59and as much pain
31:00on his back
31:00as I possibly could
31:03he's the first
31:04player ever
31:05that they put
31:06his nickname
31:07on the back
31:07of his jersey
31:08that's when you
31:08know that you're
31:10like better
31:10than everyone else
31:11even Jesus
31:12finished second
31:13to Deacon Jones
31:18there's another
31:19one in 61
31:20though
31:21there's a really
31:22good quarterback
31:22in this class
31:23who the
31:23Tarkenton
31:24is 61
31:25oh
31:25Fran Tarkenton
31:27the elusive
31:28Tarkenton
31:28sometimes
31:29finds himself
31:29in a jam
31:30but he calmly
31:31gets out of it
31:31like an old
31:32claw
31:32and makes
31:32the Bears
31:33wish they had
31:33stayed home
31:34today
31:34Tarkenton
31:35is kind of
31:35forgotten
31:35when people
31:36have the
31:36conversations
31:37about the
31:37great quarterbacks
31:38the term
31:39scrambling
31:39really kind of
31:40started
31:40with Fran Tarkenton
31:42by this time
31:43defensive linemen
31:44have lost
31:44five pounds
31:45the defensive backs
31:46have added a half dozen
31:47gray hairs
31:48and coach
31:49Norm Van Brockman
31:50may be sprouting
31:50an ulcer
31:51I was always
31:54distressed
31:54when I saw
31:55quarterbacks
31:56when their
31:56protection broke
31:56down
31:57just to give up
31:57and I just
31:58made up my mind
31:59when I got up
31:59to pro football
32:00that I was not
32:00going to give up
32:01on the play
32:01ever
32:02more heroics
32:03by Tarkenton
32:04and Francis
32:05responds
32:06with more
32:06scrambling
32:07at the time
32:08that he retired
32:09he went out
32:10with all the
32:11records
32:11yards
32:12completions
32:12touchdowns
32:20when you look
32:21at some of
32:22these older drafts
32:22and you see
32:23guys and you
32:23think
32:24wow the game
32:25would look
32:25way different
32:26without them
32:27that's when
32:28you start getting
32:28into some of
32:30the best draft
32:30hits of all time
32:31the seven
32:31hall of famers
32:32and just the way
32:33that these guys
32:33shaped the game
32:34that's a historic
32:35draft
32:36and now
32:37the number one
32:38draft year of all time
32:401983
32:42yes
32:46the 48th annual
32:47national football league
32:48selection meeting
32:49is now in session
32:521983
32:52best draft
32:53of all time
32:54that's the draft
32:55people point to
32:56as the gold standard
32:57best class ever
32:58right
32:58if you consider
32:59there were 28 teams
33:01and that you had
33:03six hall of famers
33:04in the first round
33:06john eloy
33:06eric dickerson
33:07let me
33:08let me talk about
33:09those guys appeared
33:11in every single
33:12super bowl
33:13from 80
33:14like from 83
33:15to 99
33:16it's insane
33:18played in 18
33:19super bowls
33:20between all
33:21of the hall of famers
33:26you're talking
33:27a one in four
33:28chance
33:29of drafting
33:30a hall of famer
33:31not a pro bowler
33:32not an all pro
33:33but a hall of famer
33:35in the first round
33:36that's comical
33:39i was born
33:41after this draft
33:43but
33:43into my teenage years
33:45this draft
33:46was still
33:46defining the nfo
33:48you start with the
33:49quarterbacks
33:52that first round
33:53unbelievable how many
33:55landed there
33:55elway
33:56marino
33:56jim kelly
33:57and this is such a great
33:58draft
33:59and dan marino
34:00has broken another
34:01record
34:01most touchdown
34:02passes ever
34:03telling the pass
34:05and the bills
34:07are going back
34:08to the super bowl
34:09for a fourth
34:11straight time
34:12the mvp of super bowl
34:1533
34:15is john elway
34:17you're talking about
34:19three legitimate
34:20hall of fame
34:21quarterbacks
34:22in the first round
34:23you're not going to
34:24find a quarterback
34:25draft
34:25ever
34:26better than 83
34:35cornerback
34:36daryl green
34:37texas a and i
34:38you're not too
34:38too old buddy
34:40make you run fast
34:42probably the fastest
34:43guy in the history
34:44of the league
34:45he's chased down
34:45by daryl green
34:46at the 35 yard line
34:48on people's short
34:49list the best
34:49corner of all time
34:50what
34:52he is not
34:53on that list
34:56he's done a
34:57first round tackle
34:58bruce
35:01bruce matthews
35:0314 pro bowls
35:04like four different
35:05positions
35:06that's unheard of
35:07there are only five
35:08line positions
35:09you can play
35:10and who's taking
35:11over on the inside
35:12but bruce matthews
35:14squishing people
35:15in there
35:17and oh by the way
35:18what eric dickerson's
35:20in that draft
35:20well with bill
35:21and eric dickerson
35:22we have a man
35:23who has the
35:24potential of being
35:24one of the really
35:25great backs
35:26eric dickerson
35:27ran for
35:281,808 yards
35:29his rookie year
35:30then the next year
35:31he rushes for
35:322,105
35:36he's got it
35:37and a brand new
35:39single season rushing
35:40record
35:41for the outstanding
35:42star from southern
35:43method
35:44that's 3,900 yards
35:46rushing
35:47in his first two years
35:48that's insane
35:49that's disgusting
35:511983 also produced
35:54perennial pro bowlers
35:55like roger craig
35:56hall of famer now
35:57oh what a bonanza
35:58spectacular run
36:00by roger craig
36:01and carl mecklenburg
36:05as well as
36:06hall of famer
36:07and super bowl
36:08mvp
36:08richard dent
36:10yep
36:11and let's not forget
36:13the original
36:13kurt warner
36:15jimbo colbert
36:20having those
36:21hall of famers
36:21the guys who
36:22shaped football
36:23for 15 years
36:25a great play
36:26in there
36:26i think that's
36:27what makes
36:2783 so good
36:28the most influential
36:29draft without
36:29the passing boom
36:31of the 80s
36:32that was brought
36:33about by this draft
36:34the nfl is a very
36:36very different place
36:37we will never
36:38again see nearly
36:40a quarter of the
36:41first round
36:41end up with a
36:42gold jacket
36:43in can
36:44yep
