00:00We're four years into this war, both sides, the Ukrainians, the Russians sounding resolute.
00:06Just to start with, what do you think has changed on the battlefield during the course of the past year?
00:11Well, hello there, Tom. Yes, this is a pretty dismal day for anybody who believes in democracy and anybody who
00:19believes in civilization.
00:22This is the fourth anniversary of the most brutal Russian invasion of a sovereign state to which they had signed
00:30up to respect its borders and its territorial sovereignty and so on in 1995.
00:37And we are witnessing this utterly brutal targeting of civilians, abducting of children, subjecting the population of Ukraine to blackouts.
00:51No power supply, the coldest winter for decades.
00:55And what has happened over the past year is basically it's been a stalemate.
01:01The Russians have failed to conquer Ukraine.
01:04They have failed to take any more territory.
01:07In fact, since the initial invasion, this time four years ago, of course, the Russians have been driven back.
01:16And it is absolutely disgusting.
01:20And we do have to stand firm with the Ukrainians.
01:25Of course, what has helped to fuel Russia's determination is the failure of the United States to side unequivocally with
01:36Ukraine.
01:37And that has emboldened Putin.
01:39He will carry on as long as he feels he can behave in this appalling manner with impunity.
