00:00up with knowledge so when i think of photography it's always related to world making i mean world
00:10making in the sense now you learn things about the world through photography yung idea of photography
00:16being art i learned that way way way way late as in i realized that photography can be art
00:24college na kasi i took up communication arts so even our teachers they don't necessarily frame
00:31photography as art i think there was only one teacher who said that photography is art and the
00:37reason that she used that term because she was a curator so for me siguro to answer to summarize
00:46siguro yung first time kong umawak ng camera was in grade school in high school siguro yung analog
00:53code up and then the digital na canon pero when it comes to asking the question where did i first
01:00learn photography was through looking at images in an encyclopedia and because of that i've always
01:09thought of photography in relation to education and knowledge so basically yung sa encyclopedia
01:18yung nakikita mo na amaze ka dun sa mga pictures na na nakaprint dun well partly siguro it's less of
01:26an
01:26amazement but siguro tama siguro i'll use the term wonder aside from as amazement kasi when for
01:35example pag tuming ka ng encyclopedia may kita mo yung sabihin natin images of the tower of pizza or for
01:43example think of sabihin natin uh i wanted uh interest ko ka din dati nung malita ko science
01:50so if i wanted to read an encyclopedia and something to do with space travel kasi siyempre lahat ng bata
01:57i do not know nung generation ko we wanted to be astronauts so aside from being a doctor or being
02:03a
02:03lawyer 80s 90s well 1983 ako so no so yung ano yung generation ko parang part isa sa mga parang
02:16tanong ka anong gusto mong maging pagbata gusto mong lawyer to a doctor or astronaut so ngayon nung bata
02:24ako pag nasa library ako naghahanap ako ng mga stories or parang photos on on space travel so pag bumunta
02:32ako sa encyclopedia may kita ko dun yung picture ng moon so when i look at the moon
02:39i learn about the existence of of that object orbiting earth and how it looks like so parang
02:50to a certain extent it's not necessarily parang appreciation of the beauty of the moon but it's
02:55just learning about that there's something orbiting the earth and it's amazing i guess if we if i use
03:02your term amazing and the wonderment of seeing wow galing meron palang ganon tapos pag titignan mo may
03:09mga pictures ng ano ng mars ng ano namang nang iba-ibang places or for example pag galiba sabihin
03:16natin something to do with nature tiba so i can't siyempre di ka naman pwede mag travel sa amazon
03:28snakes tigers ganon syempre i i won't be able to go to africa or to the amazon but through the
03:34images
03:35that i see in an encyclopedia nabibuild yung world view ko na there are things like this or there are
03:42animals like this tapos for example if i read about america or if i read about europe so pag nakita
03:48ko
03:48tower of pisa ayun galing nung ano nila galing nung tower rin nakatabingi so to a certain extent it's
03:55it's learning about things that i cannot easily grasp di ba in terms of me physically being there but
04:04through the image i am able to learn about this aspect or reality of the world na hindi ko siya
04:50in siguro so siguro pwede ko pang dagdag no aside from teleporting aside from aside from
04:58virtually traveling to a different place like the moon or or space well yung siyempre limited
05:05yung photos of space but siguro moon going to the amazon to africa going to europe aside from the space
05:11aspect there's also time so uh when i look at history books again going back to yung where i
05:18started photography uh i i saw the kind of uh power of photography to allow you to go back through
05:32time
05:32siyempre i i mean it very metaphorically no but the fact that for example you can see photographs of
05:39certain events in the world like for them for example yung sa Tiananmen square that's a very
05:44powerful image and obviously that that happened before the fact that they can see it and there are
05:51there are texts that that tells the story of that image that becomes your way to travel not
05:59just through place but also through time so uh again siguro i can go back to your term
06:04na yung parang wonder or or the amazement uh it's not it's not because it's artistic or because it's
06:12compositionally good i first learned that i can travel in space and time through a photograph
06:19siguro yun yun yun yun yun yun yung young mind na parang bling as in i can go back through
06:24history
06:32diba so so yun yun yun yun yun yun that's how i understood photography when i was young and then
06:38because of that quote unquote amazement or wonder kaya ako napunta sa communication so when i when
06:45i when i when i took up college when i decided uh kung anong course a college i i chose
06:51communication
06:52arts and finance siguro yun din uh communications uh because related to the way that humanity
07:01communicate communicate and also yung finance naman i understood kasi anong college ako na
07:06siyempre coming from a middle class family i have to provide so partly i understood that photography
07:29uh uh regular local photojournalist no so that's a very sad state of affairs
07:35malaki ang gap ano na extra comment lang yun so extra comment lang yun pero yun so that's why
07:44ano i ended up choosing communication arts i wanted to be a photojournalist i had i had i had
07:52experience being a photojournalist in newspaper i think i i sent you some pictures when i was doing freelance
08:07sa peninsula pininsula pininsula oh teka lang uh password natin san san ka nag train as a photojournalist
08:30um i was photo editor of of a newspaper sa sa lasal tapos i had some i was a photo
08:39editor i was
08:41a correspondent tapos yun yung ano yun yung quote unquote uh uh quote unquote newsroom experience
08:47ko uh again thank you rin pala dun sana masabi ko lang thank you for the generous introduction
08:53kasi i think yun dun sa sa caption sa ano sa sunstar diba from the newsroom to the classroom
08:59so i appreciate it very very very general thank you for the very generous uh introduction yung
09:05newsroom dun uh partly mostly because of my experience as a campus journalist i was a photo
09:14editor in college and also yung yung course ko kasi as a communication arts student so partly
09:21ng training namin para kami mascom siguro para lang hindi maarty yung pangalap it's similar to mascom
09:27diba we train how to report how to write how to take photographs how to take video how to make
09:32films how
09:33to make a website so ganun kasi yung training ng communication arts so uh and and through that
09:40process we all we are also trained sa ethics yung mga ganun so uh ethics of journalism so it's not
09:47a it's not
09:48a specific journalism course but uh it's it's a communication arts course so we discuss uh aside
09:56from production we also discuss ethics we also discuss planning project management uh maliban pa dun
10:04sa marami naming inaaral sa college so union tapos after graduation uh i was a staff photographer for a
10:12magazine so i think yun din yung i think uh no i was freelance before halo halo nagmabuhay ako tapos
10:35sa pal sa pal okay there was a time na contributor ako doon tapos i was also a staff photographer
10:41for uh
10:43expat magazine so it's a yung expat magazine uh basically the the audience of that are expats in
10:52the philippines so ang interesting uh part of being a staff photographer you get to try all kinds of
11:01photography you are able to shoot events you can shoot food you can shoot products you get you get to
11:09travel you shoot travel you shoot interiors and architecture you also shoot ah sabihin natin
11:17products so halo halo pag staff photographer di ba all-in-one ka pati features di ba yun yung i
11:23think
11:24yun yung in yun yung very exciting in being a staff photographer so to a certain extent uh by training
11:31i
11:37sayo so i was trained as a photojournalist through education and also through college experience and then
11:45i became a staff photographer uh syempre i have to qualify that kasi syempre baka meron tayong
11:49friends na talagang full-time photojournalist so hindi ako mabudon ang interesting kung bakit hindi
11:55ako mabudon after my coverage of that peninsula uh manila peninsula siege uh canon hired me so doon
12:03nagkaroon ng turn sa aking career so uh actually dati nakakausap ko yan sila sir ernie i mean
12:10speaker sir ernie dati sa college so it's interesting na i wanted also to apply sa philippine daily
12:17inquirer before uh pero yun nga uh the world the universe or god curious lang ako paano ka naka
12:26paano bakit ka nandun sa peninsula nung time na yun ano uh i wanted to cover ah okay pumunta ka
12:34talaga
12:35yes so so kasi sabi ko i need to build my my portfolio for news so kasi nga i have
12:44some works
12:45from college kasi photo editor ako uh i covered dati ano kami laman kami ng edsa tsaka menjola dati
12:54nung ano nung batch namin so parang kasi parang nangyayari ngayon 1970s yun yung diba yung panahon
13:00ng dati martial law tapos yung around 2000s yung kay erap diba edsa and menjola edsa edsa 2
13:07tamo ba edsa or edsa 3 tapos menjola din so may mga rallies dati nung nung college ako parang
13:14there were times na we were encouraged not to go to class kasi kung kung kung kung graduate ka or
13:27yeah correct so parang nangyayari some of our teachers encourage us to to go to to the field kasi
13:34nandun nandun yung kwento eh diba so anong gagawin mo sa classroom syempre requirement pa rin we are
13:39not discounting the importance of classroom learning but if you're going to get stories
13:45and news especially as a photographer the the story usually is in the streets as it happens and then
13:52ganun yung training diba so and then uh nangyayari nga lang dun sa ano dun sa manila peninsula siege
14:00uh nabalit ako sa news and i wanted to cover it kahit na wala akong wala pa akong outfit nun
14:05kasi nga
14:06photojournalist naman pag freelance kahit san ka naman diba uh pero i wanted to build
14:12din yung portfolio eventually to submit it to sir ernie or or other publications for as a freelance
14:27sa canon ah for canon ang nangyayari nun since photographer na ako nun kasi
14:40akong meron akong private ah sorry meron akong mga private clients corporations
14:45ah so mostly corporate shoots ang ginagawa mo travel din
14:52kasi sabay eh parang sabay na i was a staff photographer for that magazine for expat
14:58but i was also freelancing sa iba so kaya halo halo i think yun yung exciting pag freelance
15:05eh di ba pwede kang pwede kang ah pwede kang may stable may stable kang kinikita from from employment
15:15dun sa dun sa magazine mo or dun sa outfit mo or sa newspaper mo pero you can also sometimes
15:20moonlight so yung sa akin ah sorry sorry ano yung tanong ulit paano paano ako ah ano yung position ko
15:28sa canon
15:28ah ano yung kinuha ka nila yes kasi yung parang nangyayari nun dahil because of my professional
15:37background sin photographer ako they they they hired me for that special products for the special products
15:45so kasi when you think of canon you think of canon stores diba entry level pero ah during that time
15:51around 2008 uh it was the ano boom talaga ng dslrs nun diba and at that time very very strong
16:02yung
16:02transition from analog to digital ah from stills photography to video kasi 2008 nagkaroon din
16:10ng first full hd dslr yun yung yun yung year yun yung critical that's a turning point in in ano
16:18in in in production sa philippines na 2008 the world changed to a certain extent or or or news
16:28production change because from stills tapos separate yung video ngayon sa isang camera you can get both
16:35stills and video dati yung dslr dati yung press sample yung 5d classic wala pang video nun eh wala yun
17:07nikon ng 2008 ng 5d mark ii it was a full hd video kaya some of the wedding videographers also
17:16tried it out ah ang interesting nun ah i think a lot of people don't know it was the philippines
17:24was one of the first countries to to have the 5d mark ii used for professional video work so sila
17:31yan sila
17:32sila jason magbanua sila yan sila yung first i think yun yung di alam ng mga tao the first full
17:40hd
17:40wedding video in the world is in the philippines it was jason magbanua and their team so yun yung
17:47nagtulungan sila si arafiliana i think that was parang apat silang or apat o lima silang videographers
17:54na nag kasi sobrang problematic yung file nun eh nung time na yun eh so they had to work together
17:59and
18:00they did the first full hd ah wedding film in the world as far as i understand kasi i i
18:07haven't seen
18:08anything eh ah ang nakita ko sa europe was ah si i forgot his name pero it was a coverage
18:16so hindi siya
18:17a wedding so the first full hd wedding film as far as i know coming from nung time na yan
18:23until now
18:24was in the philippines yun yung hindi alam ng karamihan very critical talaga historically ang
18:35napag-uusapan sa labas pero like for example uh globally philippines was one of the first countries
18:42din in asia to receive photography so and oh yun so aside from singapore kaya ang daming
18:51daming mga bagay na hindi from japan outside from japan
18:58ah hindi lang kasi during that time ang now ang halos sabay-sabay i think ano eh kasi may mga
19:05itinerant
19:05pag sabi itinerant photographers basically they they have they have a they have a daguerreotype tapos
19:12they were going around south east south east asia and asia so uh around 18 around 1840s
19:21uh kasi in announce yung daguerreotype ng 1839 sa france uh you know the french uh the french
19:30released the patents or the daguerreotype august 19 1839
19:36ano ba or 1838 or 1839 as well so ngayon because of that we're you know we're celebrating
19:43din yung ano diba yung yung yung mag one hand mag to 200 years na ba oh wait basta 1839
19:50so yung ano
19:51nung ano nung ano binili ng french government yung patent from the gear tapos from there uh it was the
19:58french
19:58government who tried to spread photography around the world pero what they had was the french the french
20:06photographers are the ones going kasi hindi pa siya ganun kadaling ituro so they were there were itinerant
20:13photographers in asia uh na french so for example yung sa philippines the first photograph of the philippines
20:22was done by a french guy his name is jules cittier so well depende sa book kasi mayroong isang book
20:28naman na nagkocontest na it was uh uh uh si ano si sinibaldo dimas so sorry ano to medyo bookish
20:36um so historically uh the french brought the photography to the philippines tapos were one of
20:46the first ones in southeast asia kung kasabay niya ba yung china and japan medyo magkakalapit kasi
20:53during that time ano nga eh nag spread na eh so you think ito pa yung maganda sa photography when
20:58you
20:59when you discuss it in terms of circulation of knowledge siguro i'll frame this ano this this this
21:06this phrase uh this this sentence na parang you also have to think of photography as a circulation
21:12of knowledge unlike uh unlike painting for example painting and painting isa lang yan pero when you
21:21think of photographs basically parang it's a mechanical process that you can replicate images so ngayon that
21:27kind of knowledge from the french government when it transferred to asia or not transferred na uh the way
21:35the way the way it's spread to asia parang it's also a transfer of knowledge so to a certain extent
21:41you have to think of photography not just an art form you also have to consider it as a way
21:46to
21:47to communicate and and and spread knowledge so kaya for example a very you know very very interesting
21:55bit no so um yung colonial kaya nga sinasabi natin yung colonial mindset partly
22:01um if you think of photography as a spread of knowledge it was the spread of western knowledge
22:08so yun din uh you have to consider that you have to consider that spread of knowledge in terms of
22:14western knowledge parang ano yun that was that that was the period of ano eh of expansion from europe
22:21diba they were going to different countries well dipa countries so they were thinking na parang they're
22:26exploring the world tapos mangyayari they they bring in a camera and then they use it to document
22:33but also to colonize so yun din yung parang dark history of photography so i think di na pag-uusapan
22:40yun na parang how was photography used to colonize people kasi basically you're imposing a certain kind of
22:46world view to the country where you bring the camera and aside from that sino ba nag-ooperate
22:54ng cameras it's usually the ano the the europeans who were who were knowledgeable and who were using
23:00photography to catalog their travels so to a certain extent photography at the start early photography it was
23:08cataloging us the the world so parang it was used to report to europe dun sa mga trips ng mga
23:19mga expedite expeditionary travels like for example the lagren mission uh yung the lagren mission is that
23:28mission to the philippines singapore and india which brought the camera to southeast asia so
23:36and that was used the photo the photograph was used to for commercial purposes and interestingly
23:43yung side story nun uh the city since he's a soldier uh they were trying to photograph places where they
23:53can establish a colony in southeast asia so they were also photographing ayan constant
24:05so it was so it was also a spread of power you can also think about sobrang lawak talaga
24:15itang photography you know talagang ayun nga yung yun ba yung doon sa photography education
25:02ah sa sa ano sa delasal college of saint mil so it's the only school in the philippines that has
25:10an ab photography program so yun yung interesting dun sa dun sa school namin na parang we have a
25:17bachelor's degree in photography so that's three to four years depending kung matapos mo naman
25:22so i think the the syllabus or the curriculum is good for three years and two terms so imagine mo
25:28in
25:28three years and two terms anong pag-aaralan nyo di ba i mean yung iba natututo nasa workshop one day
25:33workshop marunong na mag-operate ng camera how come yung mga tao sa binil but then they discuss
25:40photography for three years and two terms anong pinag-uusapan nila doon so you can just imagine
25:45how how wide and far reaching and comprehensive the program is so ang tanong doon ang tanong mo kanina
25:52is ano ba ang tinuturo ko ah when i got invited sa sa binil ah the first subjects na mga
25:59tinuruan ko
26:00was theory and gallery exhibitions so kasi alam nila yung background ko ah sa communications yung
26:08undergrad ko and partly they also know na i came from silver lens also so i had some experience
26:14sa gallery work so ah yun yung yun yung initial na hinawakan ko yung um parang contemporary photography
26:23and theory also gallery exhibition tapos eventually ah since ang background ko naman is from corporate
26:30they also gave me subjects for business so ang interesting din sa binil is that uh with there's
26:38a parang two subjects specifically for photography business kasi we understand that a lot of people
26:46think of photography as expression the artistry of photography so very very you know very
26:55amorphous or sabihin natin siguro very you know very expression based or parang very very hobby based
27:02or very art artist artsy based parang we can say it that way no parang parang we still see photography
27:10mostly outside outside the curriculum for example if you go to a workshop it's either extremely technical
27:16or you think of it as extremely artistic so basically expression memory like composition again
27:23pero in in binil since we're thinking we consider photography as a world making process that would
27:30include the the aspect of it being a profession so uh there are two subjects specifically for business in
27:39in in binil so yun din yun na na-assign sa akin so uh so requirement nila magpasa ng ng
27:47business plan
27:48after my subject so you know you treat it after roi na yes well you have to defend actually that's
27:57a
27:57that's a very good point no geez kasi you think of of photography when when you're a hobbyist you think
28:04of of
28:04photography as something that no tiba wala namang wala namang balik diba parang kasi i just want to
28:10to document my travels document my family events or i want to express myself diba but but sa amin we
28:18understand that um there's a bachelor's degree and to a certain extent some of our students would like
28:25to make photography as their profession or their career so we have to make them ready now when you go
28:31outside you pag bumili ka ng camera anong kailan mo siya no kailan mo siya mababawi diba
28:37so for example how do you market yourself as maliban pa dun paano mo i-handle yung natutunan mo na
28:43theory
28:44side at saka the practical side for example ethics applied to photojournalism or for example uh ethics
28:53applied to you know to the wedding diba so it was a certain extent parang dapat magkasama
28:58lagi yung theory and practice so in our case we at least dun sa class ko specifically
29:04i i hindi sila makakapasa kung hindi sila makakapag provide sa akin ng financial plan so in short
29:10they have to they have to give me a business plan anything any business related to photography
29:17whether it's a darkroom actually experience ko meron mga nagsasamit na i want to run a darkroom
29:23business then let's okay medyo difficult yun pero show me show me show me show me show me how you're
29:30going to do it so show me a feasibility study so union parang basically they have to research
29:43labs o compute nila kung gaano katagal yung roi nun or ir are actually internal internal rate of
29:50return not necessarily roi so accounting terms so ir so kailan mo siya marirecover that was for example
29:58how do you make contracts diba so hindi naman pwede na laging libre diba so yun yung mga bagay na
30:05yun we discussed that in class so and then they have to defend it to one business person and also
30:13one photographer so ngayon hindi lang ako yung nagtuturo ah they will also experience being
30:18critiqued by professionals so para at least hindi nalang sabihin na si sir tuni nagtuturo nyan
30:26pero hindi lang sa akin ang gagaling so if i so for example i think kung ano naging panel ko
30:34na for
30:34example in invite ko na sir junsepe from pcp si sir sir si vj nandiyan ba si vj
30:41di ba yes ah yun si vj is also ako faculty sir j javier yes he's a yes sir j
30:50is here also
30:51lalo na sa ano film actually maganda yes a darkroom and also research i think a lot of people don't
30:58know for example the key in the case of sir j he's a researcher he's a photo historian so
31:03actually kanina lang this morning he presented a very important finding in photography related to
31:11our concept of wartime philippines so it and and you have to understand that that discovery
31:18research is surging historically not uh you know it's not just about photography it's about
31:24that our thinking of nationhood because it has something to do with the flag
31:29and our wartime psychology kasi parang i think when tiba parang sinasabi lagi natin na pag wartime
31:35binabaliktad yung flag yung red yung sa taas yun yung yun yung iniisip natin sir j has a new findings
31:42kung totoo ba yun na talaga ba pag wartime binabaliktad ba yung flag and yung findings na yun came from
31:47a
31:48photograph so interesting yung trabaho din sir j aside from aside from uh owning a darkroom also being a
31:55photographer he's also a he's also very prolific uh researcher so sya yung may handle sa amin
32:24na yun partly because there's a project we have basically ito yung isa ko namang group
32:31so see you read that committee ph uh it's a it's an independent group of uh users fans and friends
32:39of like in the philippines so right union red community ph yes or read that committee ph
32:45already parang oh kasi parang inisip namin uh how how do we contribute to like uh not just not just
32:56as a
32:56brand but but uh but as a culture of seeing because we have to understand that aside from
33:03being a camera brand leica started 35 millimeter photography so when you think of us photographers
33:11going around shooting an event shooting a news uh news uh uh shooting news or doing documentary or
33:19uh uh traveling to somewhere uh shooting wild animals or documenting uh issues on environment
33:29we think of photography as something mobile we go around having a camera with us
33:35yun that that would not have been possible or would not have been as spread uh widespread if
33:45hindi ginawa ni oscar barnack yung 35 millimeter camera so we're not naman seeing na parang
33:57of photography now we go around pero it's it we just recognize na when you think of of like as
34:04a
34:04culture of seeing it's not just the camera it's it's it's a it's witnessing the world so so when you
34:11think
34:11of like at least in terms of the the culture it has built in relation to photography aside from
34:18being a camera maker it created a culture of seeing na we a person can can be a witness to
34:26an event and
34:27uh yun nga parang ang term nun is a snapshot photography prior to that cameras were really big
34:33diba the daguerreotypes large so uh pero siyempre you have to we also have to recognize yung ginawa
34:41ni kodak diba yung the brownie camera i think oh kasi yung brownie camera that's around 18 18 18
34:481880s 1890 medium format so you have to have to be uniform yung brownie or 35 35 millimeter 35
34:57okay and then medyo bigger medyo bigger medyo bigger so uh i mean actually i mean for example
35:05parang sa ating di natin masyado pinapansin na ano yung effect of the size of the sensor in terms
35:11of a culture parang wait di lang diba you're just talking about a sensor size e basta pag medium format
35:30all of
35:30these things play play a part in a culture of seeing kasi for example if you use a medium format
35:37obviously there are more details diba so tapos uh pag you use a 35 millimeter naman in terms of historical
35:45historical from uh you really huge camera now you love around suddenly now you can bring a camera
35:52anywhere so yun yung yun yung shift dun sana dun sa sa culture of seeing uh aside from the brownie
35:59camera it was the leica who provided this this another this possibility for people to go around
36:04shoot snapshots and and uh yun going back to to read the committee ph uh yun yung goal namin na
36:12parang
36:12how do we promote this this another this culture of seeing how do we promote like not just as a
36:18camera but
36:18but but i don't know but uh but a culture of appreciation so kaya and we don't sell anything
36:25naman we don't sell cameras that's that's the task of of of the local store of like a store phillips
36:31but for us we we support the culture of seeing that like us started so kaya napunta kami dun sa
36:38research
36:38parang kung ano if that is the case if if if if if that change from stationary photography to ano
36:47to
36:48something that moves around kailan nag-start yun sa philippines parang ganun yung question and then
36:55we had to research kung ano kailan kailan dumating yung laika sa philippines so interesting
36:59natos nahanap namin tinulungan may tulong din from abroad kasi nung nalaman nila na ano yun nga we're
37:05not we're not a store we don't sell anything naman pero they said na oh sige we'll we'll try to
37:09ano help you with research so meron kami nakong konting tulong from from abroad so yun kaya kaya medyo
37:17ano medyo proud kami dun sa group na yun kasi parang it's not necessarily a club it's kasi parang
37:21isip kasi ng iba parang red dot community peaches as a club no it's not a club it's a it's
37:26a very loose
37:27network of lovers of laika siguro so and to think some of those people who love laika don't have a
37:34laika
37:35you have to you also have to i also have to say that na parang a lot of people think
37:42na parang to be
37:43part of red dot community page you have to have a like no i mean again it's not necessarily the
37:48camera
37:48that we're talking about we're talking about a culture of seeing that that like a started or
37:53promoted na lang wag naman started kasi baka may issue tayo pero the kind of the kind of culture of
37:57seeing
37:58that that like a helped promote which is being a witness to the world so and i think important
38:05the next year kasi by next year it's going to be the 100th year of laika in the philippines
38:10so we're also thinking of some projects to promote that kind of culture of seeing so
38:17oh
38:17tsaka kasi yung iba pag nakakita ng laika unang unang reaction oh mahal yan ah
38:28di ba presyo ka agad tapos
38:31well that's true
38:49medyo interesting yung ano medyo interesting yung ano yung laika crowd
38:53ah speaking from someone who came from the brand din
38:57medyo interesting yung yung laika crowd kasi ah
39:01merong merong users or merong owners ng laika that that sees like as a as an object of desire
39:09so similarly for example if i if i see a painting wala namang use yung painting na magagamit ko siya
39:17but when i see it ha what it reveals about the world di ba for example the painting talk parang
39:22yung painting is
39:23is a very well a very meaningful painting di ba ah you wanna look at it di ba so it's
39:31an it becomes an object of desire
39:33tapos for the so for some who has the capacity some could buy an artwork
39:39work so may mga ganong crowd din sa laika na some of them might not be really focused on shooting
39:45but because of the appreciation of the design of the history the heritage
39:50and they buy a they buy a laika so may mga collectors kasi
39:54tsaka ano tumataas yung price niya
39:58so yun so exactly so so so so so some so some so sa crowd na yun minsan merong merong
40:07merong merong
40:08merong part of that that community na uh mas priority nila yung appreciation of the design of
40:16the history the heritage so the the camera becomes an object of collect collection so it becomes a
40:23collector's item so because of that is similar to a painting di ba so when you look at the painting
40:29what why do you why do you buy a painting why do you buy an artwork because there's something
40:33uh it it says something about the world it means it's it's meaningful in a different way you don't
40:39necessarily use a painting to do anything but it it reflects a certain kind of meaning meaning or
40:48it's meaningful in a different way so pero yung sa yung sa no so when you go to red dot
40:55hallo yun so merong merong crowd na gano'n so may crowd din na very ano sila naman yung talagang
41:01shooting crowd talaga na see photowalk tayo tomorrow so may gano'n so ah kaya very rich very rich
41:07yung ano yung community na there are people who who ano who who like shooting some people are are more
41:15focused on appreciating and collecting and uh and we are all friends so yun yung maganda doon na parang
41:21uh very very inclusive very inclusive yung community uh i mentioned that because in
41:26nga uh pag sabihin natin pag sa general community ka sa photography community and tendency oh good
41:33na nga ng camera hindi naman magshoot hindi naman marunong hindi naman marunong magshoot i understand i
41:37mean as a teacher ganon din yung my school na parang it's not it's not just the uh the camera
41:42as a tool
41:43ba it's it's the it's how you use it so parang diba yung yung lagi natin sabi it's not it's
41:50not the
41:50indian ah it's not the pana it's it's the indian not the pana we usually say that pero there are
41:56there
41:56are so many cases that the pana really matters so so for example lalo ngayon
42:37sorry sorry sorry
42:42nabalik bossing
42:47sorry naputol
42:48ayun okay na ayun
42:50ayun ah anong muna natin gusto kong malaman dahil konti na lang kasi yung time
42:56gusto kong malaman ano yung lagi kong nakikitang
43:03photography chismis ph
43:08so yun nga medyo ano so as as we have discussed no medyo marami rami rin akong pinapasukan
43:15kasi nga because of my background i think it's very sad that we only that some people only talk
43:21about photography in a certain way na parang it's just shooting so for me that's that's that's valuable
43:27that we think of photography as as a means to record the world as a means to express ourselves but
43:35photography is such a wide ranging kind of human activity uh that was made possible by technology
43:42and and because of that um i feel sad sometimes na minsan people talk about photography na parang ito
43:54it's only we are only able to discuss it in ganitong platforms diba yung makakapagpuntuhan
44:02and and i and interestingly in in this case for example in our session no we're talking about
44:08photography and not we're not even looking at the photograph some people feel na parang
44:13pag photography dapat may photograph or may camera but in our case we're discussing photography
44:20and yet we haven't seen any photograph yet that entire for the entire part diba so yung photography
44:26chismis it's that kind of discussion or it's that kind of exploration on photography na when you think
44:33of photography you're talking about a world building process na for example x-rays so when you think of an
44:41x-ray an x-ray an x-ray is a photograph but would you read it similar to an artwork
44:46di ba hindi
44:47depending pag niligay mo yung x-ray sa gallery yes magkakaroon ng ibang meaning but the fact that
44:53that photograph that that x-ray is a photograph it it gets included in the discourse it should be
45:01for example satellite imaging so satellite images are being used to map territories it's being used to
45:08predict weather patterns satellite imaging and yet that is also photography you don't you don't look
45:14at a satellite image and say na parang ito yung composition nya ito yung rule of terms nya parang
45:19that's not that's not how you look at a satellite image i mean you don't you don't think of composition
45:24when you think of of a satellite image so for example you're doing uh photogrammetry or forensics
45:31about forensics naman you're not necessarily discussing the artistic aspects or the aesthetic
45:37aspects of it you're you're you're thinking of of photography as a means to acquire data or
45:43knowledge or or meaning from the world so kaya yung photography chismis it's that so basically
45:49ang spectrum ng discussion or ng content ng photography chismis is something very it can be
45:55something very banal as an id picture as to up to something very complicated like satellite images
46:03and something very uh artistic like for example gallery work so for example you have you have your
46:09you know stephanie sihuko you have your uh poklong anading that's that's an interest for for
46:16photography chismis so to summarize siguro photography chismis is a paracritical project so
46:23i mean paracritical is that ang idea dun is that we look at photography in all its aspects
46:30so we're not just discussing the composition light theory uh it's not just that i mean pag sabihin
46:49yung photograph di ba hindi so we have to understand na na there's something very intuitive
46:55about photography that helps us build our knowledge of the world and yung si photography chismis as a
47:02paracritical project is is trying to promote that na parang we have to look at photograph photography
47:08in other ways not just this way so kaya yun kaya medyo ano ko involved in many many stuff i
47:16think
47:16parang ang term yata ng kaibigan ko parang you're a ano you're you're photographically you're
47:22photographically promiscuous kasi bakit bakit ka nagda delve into camera clubs you're delving in scientific
47:29your your teacher in vinyl you're also you have your your red dot community and then you have
47:37photography chismis so and sometimes i also do artworks pominsan-minsan so parang kasi yun niya
47:44eh for me ah i mean i don't know i cannot speak for anyone else it's i feel sad kung
47:50kung kinakahon yung
47:51photography pag kinahon mo yung photography as art good okay lang kinahon kinahon yes oh niligyan mo
48:20is a is a
48:21phd professor in in ateneo and in back in 2022 or 2023 he started a subject in ateneo called
48:33philosophy of photography so and that subject is for you know is for philosophy students not for
48:41fine art students so so you have so you can see na parang there are so many ways to talk
48:46about
48:47photography and yun nga going back ah i feel a certain kind of sadness if someone tries to be
48:55very legalistic trying to trying to ano ba to reduce pag may mga reductive statements yung mga friends
49:04natin gets ko naman minsan may mga reductive statements in online na parang photography is this
49:09photography is that photography is this i understand kasi yun yung pinagagalingan nila pero yun nga i i speak for
49:16myself lang i cannot mention anyone else for me i feel sadness if pag kinakahon yung photography and
49:22hindi ko masya matik so i had to put up different kinds of projects passion projects to explore that
49:29so you have you read that for the for the for the culture of seeing uh you have i have
49:34i'm part of
49:35being to teach it in a very uh in a very organized structured uh way in college we we have
49:43philosophy of
49:43photography that's going to start on march 1 i have photography chismis as a paracritical project
49:49and uh yun so sometimes i shoot also i'm part of camera club of the philippines then so medyo marami
49:55hindi akong involvement uh sa photography nga malawak kaya ganun kalawak yung ginawa ginagawa mo which is
50:53ah fire prevention month photo exhibit with me and aldo banainal so mga photos namin na coverage
51:11ah cebu city historical affairs commission and of ah commission affairs and office ah
51:47ng exhibit namin ni aldo banainal awareness yan for fire prevention month yun thank you sir sir
52:08dami ka natutunan siguro siguro next time part 2 part 3 part 4
52:16sa ano
52:21sige go go go go go plug so ano sa friday ah we have a speaker from italy ah it's
52:29online event uh yung red dot so again ang goal ng red that is really to to to promote a
52:37culture
52:38of seeing and when i say culture of seeing it's not necessarily tied into into a camera brand
52:44it's more of a way or a structure or a certain kind of mode of appreciation about the world in
52:52relation to photography or photography in relation to the world so on on friday feb 27
52:59so uh at 6 p.m we have an online event uh we have uh david montiglione uh he's a
53:07nat geo fellow
53:09tapos uh yung project nya is a documentary project uh on critical minerals so the title is critical
53:20minerals geography of energy so what does what what is the work about what's the series about
53:26so see uh si david montiglione he won an award uh yung loba award it's like a world press photo
53:33award
53:34sponsored by by laika and basically the document nya yung changes in in human territories places
53:44mindsets due to the shift from uh from fossil fuels to renewable energy so yun yung interesting so
53:52parang kasi when we think of of when we think of renewable or specifically ev or electronic
53:58vehicles or or these kinds of renewable energy we we we think of it as clean we think of it
54:04as clean
54:05energy um but uh you don't so work nya uh he also shows na meron ding effect yan kasi when
54:12you when you do when
54:13you shift to to to electric vehicles or battery powered sources nangyayari you also have to mine
54:20certain minerals and those minerals ang affected dun ah yung mga yung mga ganong mining ang affected
54:26dun is yung mga countries na for example um dominican republic uh indonesia so pero maganda naman
54:34sa kaya she he's not saying na it's bad or good so i think yun din yung part of the
54:39part of the exercise
54:41of documentary photograph of documentary photography is that um even if we have a strong belief
54:48about the the the badness or a goodness of an activity sometimes there's we still keep a space to be
54:56detached we're not we're not saying that we're giving up our principles uh we're just saying now we we
55:01provide a space uh uh between us and the topic that we're photographing our documentary work for
55:09people to to to see it in a detached way and to to see it in a hindi hindi hindi
55:16siya hindi siya nakukulayan
55:17ng personal ano natin personal beliefs natin so is that completely possible i think impossible na
55:23totally wala tayo sa sa photographs na ginagawa natin but the fact is yung going back to david
55:28uh montiglioni yung work niya is that uh it talks about the effects of shifting from fossil fuel to
55:35renewable energy and it's and and that project won uh several awards uh because sinya parang i think
55:49sa human population sa environment parang we think of of clean energy clean energy as clean but
55:56yung work niya parang there's there's there's there's a certain story then behind the scenes
56:01na nangyayari so i hope people can join that oh san san namin ma ano yan uh link
56:10yes you can visit ano you can visit red.communityph in facebook and also in instagram tapos uh there's a
56:19link there tapos uh you can register so kasi ano uh para para din ma-manage namin yung event
56:26tapos kung hindi kayo kundi nyo mahanap you can just message red.communityph
56:36kaya rin pala namin ginagawa yun kasi that's also our parang contribution or in solidarity or in
56:42solidarity with the national arts month because when you think of arts it has to be this gallery
56:49work selling selling selling artworks and then so yung yung siguro it the the the goal of that event is
56:58that to be a dialogue parang when we think of photography documentary photography is in dialogue
57:05with a certain kind of mode in looking at the world necessarily artistically but it reports it
57:12it diagnoses it criticizes what is happening to to the world via the image so and i think it's very
57:21meaningful if you join that event ayun ayun sir tony salamat sa time and medyo talagang kulang yung oras
57:30natin gagawa natin ito ng part two ayun salamat sa time sir and marami kaming alam ko marami
57:39kaming natutunan sa mga na share mo lalo na sa mga viewers din namin and thank you sa susunod ulit
57:46by the way
57:46ah thank you pala sa macy's sir cesar and rico paga sa paggamit nitong rico bago nilang gr for monochrome
57:55pure
57:56black and white camera ayun thank you and sa susunod ulit na episode ah march 2 by the way bye
58:06bye
