00:00Watching the U.S. men win gold against Canada, it's the same refrain every four years.
00:06That's going to jumpstart hockey in the United States of America.
00:10It's not.
00:11And I'm sorry to say that, but for those of you that think that Sunday, as great as it was,
00:16and allow me to say, that was a top 10 international sports moment for our fabulous country,
00:23we are not going to suddenly have some rise in hockey ratings.
00:27We're not going to have a rise in American-born kids dominating the NHL.
00:32It was awesome, but it was awesome in a vacuum.
00:37And I know that bothers the hockey community, but spot the lie.
00:43Spot the lie, Pugs Johnson.
00:46Yeah, I can't.
00:47And the reason is, in large part, because the best player was a goalie.
00:52Now, we've seen with the WNBA, for example, if you get a player that's a shooting star,
00:56that all of a sudden will make people want to watch, you can get a little bump.
01:00In the case of WNBA, they got quite a big bump from Kaitlin Clark.
01:04The best player was a goalie.
01:06No one's now going to tune in to the Winnipeg Jets and say,
01:09oh, man, I can't wait to watch that guy stop Pugs.
01:11Maybe if they had a guy.
01:13Well, go ahead.
01:14I can say, I'll do you one better than that.
01:16And here's the problem that hockey has.
01:18It was a rivalry.
01:20It's not our sport.
01:21It's their sport.
01:22So while we have professionals and very good players playing,
01:25the Canadian team is probably the best team on the planet today.
01:29And we beat them.
01:31That's a rivalry that we like.
01:33We haven't won in 46 years.
01:35And unfortunately for the NHL, if I told you to turn on, I don't know,
01:42Islanders-Sabers next Wednesday,
01:45you're not going to get what we saw out of USA vs. Canada.
01:49And that's the problem.
01:51The problem is that a regular, regular season NHL game
01:56does not captivate us on television
01:59the way a gold medal game captivated us when we're the underdog.
02:04And that's why, while it was great, I celebrated it.
02:08I can't wait to see the guys at the State of the Union address tonight.
02:11I can't wait to see them party more.
02:14And all the videos from, you know, Live Miami.
02:17And as they all show up to their respective teams,
02:19I guess after the speech tonight and tomorrow morning,
02:22hungover with no teeth, celebrating American gold.
02:26And as you see videos of them partying last night down in Miami,
02:30the reality is that the NHL in the regular season
02:34cannot capture what we got in that gold medal game.
02:38And that's a reality.
02:39Sorry to say it.
02:40Sorry to say it.
02:41I'm the harbinger of truth.
02:42That is a reality.
02:43That is a reality.
