00:00Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokan has kept mum since her
00:08video went viral on social media platforms, wherein, allegation of bringing people illegally to settle inside forest in Edo State
00:17was made against the Divisional Police Officer, the DPO who is currently serving at the Divisional Police Headquarters of Uboa
00:24community in the Essen Southeast local government area in the state,
00:29a state that have witnessed rampant cases of kidnappings in recent time, especially since the beginning of this year, despite
00:36the fact that the Edo State Governor, Munde Okpabolo has executed the destruction of numbers of houses or properties of
00:44apparent innocent landlords or people who may not have direct connection with the crime, it may be recalled that early
00:502025, the governor demolished a residential property on College Road simply because it was linked to a kidnapping gang operation.
00:59operating in the Aduawa, Iyan, and Beninauchi Road bypass axis, even when the building belonged to a woman based in
01:06Italy, just that, her brother, Osamede Asimota, the alleged key leader of the gang, allegedly used it to coordinate abductions.
01:14This is just one of many properties demolished by the Edo State government over kidnapping in the state, yet, records
01:22of kidnappings in the state continued to grow higher, and recent police and military arrests indicated that Edo State is
01:29perhaps under siege of foreign invaders who may have taken over larger part of the state forest to coordinate kidnappings
01:37in the state while working with some of the local residents to perpetuate the criminal act.
01:42It may be interesting to note that, another set of non-indigenes of the state arrested by the police recently
01:48included two persons caught inside the specialist hospital in Auchi, the two suspects who were said to be non-indigenes
01:56of the state were among the gang of kidnappers behind the abduction of Dr. Abu Babatunde,
02:01who regained his freedom after his family reportedly paid a sum of 50 million Naira's ransom after the doctor and
02:09his younger brother were abducted on January 2, 2026,
02:13while opening the gate to their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, and unfortunately,
02:20the younger brother was later found dead on January 5 near the Orley River along City Pride Road,
02:26with police suspecting he was killed by the abductors, and the alleged illegal settlers who confessed the Ugboha DPO as
02:34their facilitator,
02:35are said to be non-Nigerians from foreign countries.
02:38According to one of the vigilantes who caught the illegal settlers, the arrested illegal settlers in the forest will be
02:45taken to the station.
02:46The vigilante member also said the illegal settlers are not Nigerians,
02:51and close watchers said people are brought in and smuggled into Edo forests illegally and such people may be responsible
02:58for the act of kidnapping in the state.
03:00Available records indicated that the kidnapping situation in the state is currently happening almost daily with numbers of the state
03:08residents
03:08and indigenes also recorded dead or killed by kidnappers since Governor Munday Okpebolo came into power.
03:15On the recent arrest of two suspects at the specialist hospital in Auchi,
03:19the Edo State Command Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikiodom,
03:24the first breakthrough came on 3 February 2026.
03:28Operatives of the Auchi Division,
03:30while conducting a routine bush-combing operation in collaboration with local hunters and vigilante groups,
03:36at Warakay Forest,
03:38and, following a lead on an intelligence,
03:40intercepted one Samanu Kawuji,
03:43male,
03:44and,
03:44a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of two knives,
03:49two mobile phones,
03:50one UBO ATM card,
03:52and the sum of 20,000,
03:54250 naira.
03:56An identification parade was conducted at the police,
04:00station and he was identified by one of the abductors of Dr. Abu Babatunde.
04:05Similarly,
04:06on the 8th of February 2026 at about 9 o'clock hours,
04:10the divisional police officer,
04:12following a lead on the same case mobilized operatives to the specialist hospital,
04:17Auchi,
04:18where two suspects identified as Idris Abu Bakar,
04:21male,
04:22and Sani Abu Bakar,
04:23male,
04:24were apprehended at the hospital premises.
04:26Both suspects have also been identified as part of the gang that abducted Dr. Babatunde on February 1st,
04:342026.
04:35Idris Abu Bakar was identified as the particular person who received ransom money for the release of Dr. Abu.
04:43Efforts have been intensified towards conducting a comprehensive and discreet investigation aimed at dismantling the entire notorious organized criminal network
04:52responsible for the kidnappings in Auchi and its environs.
04:56The Commissioner of Police,
04:58Hido State Command,
04:59CP Monday Agbonica,
05:02reassures members of the public of the command's resolve to pursue all kidnapping cases to a logical conclusion and bring
05:08perpetrators to justice,
05:10while sustaining aggressive bushcombing operations and intelligence-led policing across the state.
05:15The command can be reached on the following numbers,
05:18Emergency Control Room Numbers,
05:2708077773721 and 08037646272 and for complaints.
05:36Public Complaints Bureau,
05:39PCB 081509999335.
05:47Complaints Response Unit,
05:49CRU 081003899992.
05:56Meanwhile,
05:58a lecturer with the federal polytechnic,
06:00Auchi,
06:01Issa Abdulaziz had earlier on Sunday,
06:04posted on his Facebook wall that,
06:06Dr. Abu Babatunde,
06:08reported for duty today,
06:09Sunday February 8th,
06:112026,
06:12at the Edo State University Teaching Hospital,
06:15unaware that his routine workday would reopen one of the darkest chapters of his life.
06:20While on ward rounds,
06:22Dr. Babatunde noticed some individuals who had come to visit a patient.
06:27In a chilling moment of recognition,
06:29he identified among the members of the same kidnapping gang that abducted him and his younger brother,
06:35a tragic incident that ended with the killing of his brother while attempting to escape from the den.
06:40Acting swiftly,
06:42Dr. Babatunde immediately alerted the local security outfit,
06:46popularly known as the Vigilante.
06:48However,
06:50under circumstances that remain unclear,
06:52the information reportedly leaked to the police before the Vigilante team could arrive.
06:57Police officers moved in promptly,
07:00arresting two of the suspects and detaining them today,
07:03Sunday February 8th,
07:042026,
07:05at the Divisional Police Station in Auchi.
07:08Fresh accounts emerging today further deepened the case.
07:12One of the individuals who participated in delivering the ransom that secured,
07:16Dr. Babatunde,
07:17release has identified one of the arrested suspects as being among those who physically received the ransom on the day
07:24the payment was made.
07:26Another report indicates that,
07:28just last night,
07:29the two suspects carried out POS transactions at a stand within Auchi,
07:34raising fresh questions about the source of the funds.
07:37A significant sum of money was allegedly found in their possession at the time of arrest today,
07:43an amount investigators believe is inconsistent with the known means and strongly suggestive of criminal activity.
07:49As this report is being filed today,
07:52credible sources confirm that pressure is already being mounted on the Divisional Police Officer in Auchi to release the suspects.
07:59This development has sparked widespread concern within the community.
08:04Notably,
08:05during a recent meeting with Auchi youth bodies,
08:08the DPO was reportedly overheard stating that the case had become widely publicized and could no longer be swept under
08:15the carpet,
08:16an indication that attempts may already be underway to compromise the process.
08:20For a community long traumatized by kidnapping and violent crime,
08:25today's arrests represent a critical moment.
08:29The people of Auchi and its environs are watching closely.
08:32The Edo state government must now take decisive responsibility.
08:36Governor Monday Okkabolo is urged to ensure that investigations are thorough and transparent and that,
08:42if the suspects are found guilty,
08:44the full weight of the Edo state anti-kidnapping law is applied without interference.
08:50Justice for Dr. Abu Babatunde,
08:52for his murdered brother,
08:54and for countless victims across Edo North must not be delayed or denied.
08:59Today must mark a turning point,
09:01not another missed opportunity.

10:57Day after the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday, Hagbonika personally led troops
11:03of joint security operatives at the dead of the night to launch offensive attacks against kidnappers
11:08in the forest. The commander, forebrigade of the Nigerian army, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun
11:14also personally led troops of joint security operatives to the kidnappers' hideouts and
11:20launched massive military clearance and offensive actions against kidnappers. Both security
11:25operations led to the arrest of several suspected kidnappers allegedly caught in the act inside the
11:31bush, with the identities of the arrested suspects indicating that most of the kidnappers terrorizing
11:37Edo State are from the far northern part of Nigeria, an observation which appeared to have
11:43challenged the public policy statement made earlier in January 2026 by the Edo State Governor,
11:50Monde Okkabolo who stated that many of those involved in the kidnapping surge in Edo State
11:55are indigenes of the area, saying, that may be the reason some kidnappers wears face masks
12:01The governor made this statement as kidnapping in the state appeared to have become worse in 2026 and
12:07very rampant in a manner that indicated that an average of one to two persons are being kidnapped
12:13in a day in Edo State as more than 60 persons became new victims of the increasing criminal activities in
12:20the state since the beginning of 2026. Like, in January 2nd, 2026, two brothers, Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, a medical
12:30doctor on housemanship and Abu Tahir, a fresh graduate were kidnapped at the gate of their residence along City Pride
12:36Road.
12:37Higbira Kambinouchi, the kidnappers initially demanded the 200 million Naira's ransom
12:43and tragically, on January 5th, one of the two brothers was found dead. On January 9th, 2026, eight indigenes of
12:51a Moga community in the Akoko Edo local government area of the state were abducted from a hotel along a
12:58billow road.
12:59Since the start of 2026, Edo State has experienced a significant surge in kidnappings, leading to widespread protests at Ikpoma
13:08in the Edo Central Senatorial Zone with multiple police rescue operations including the incidents reported early February 2026,
13:17where police rescued nine victims including five children and a separate group of 14 victims. This is that, earlier on
13:26January 22nd, 2026, a farmer named Monday Adaro was kidnapped and later rescued and in late January, another farmer, Abraham
13:36Udwar, and his two wives, Brinda and Anna were abducted from a Goro Amende community but successfully rescued by security
13:43forces.
13:44In mid-January, Ake Fever and a former student union leader were kidnapped in Edo Central, troubled by the surge
13:53in kidnapping in the state. Residents and students of Ambrose Alley University, AAU staged a major protest on January 10th,
14:022026, citing daily kidnappings and the abduction of a university professor and numerous students.
14:09On February 2nd, 2026, a family of nine was ambushed at Ekoa Beku Ioa Road in Ovia Northeast local government
14:18area and the kidnappers demanded a 260 million nairas ransom for four children and two women still held after five
14:26others were rescued or released.
14:28That aside, on January 31st, 2026, gunmen intercepted a commercial bus near Ekoa Beku Ioa, shooting the driver and taking
14:37passengers into the bush. Police later rescued 13 victims.
14:41In mid-January 2026, multiple residents in Iqpoma were abducted, including a victim captured on CCTV being taken from his
14:50compound.
14:51According to Captain Kennedy Anyanwu, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Troops of 4
15:00Brigade Nigerian Army, in collaboration with personnel of the Nigerian Air Force, Edo State Police Command, the Nigerian Security and
15:09Civil Defense Corps, NSCBC, and the Edo State Security Corps, on the 4th of February 2026 conducted a clearance operation,
15:19codenamed Operation.
15:20Iqbo Danu 1 to neutralize, flush out terrorists, kidnappers and rescue victims of the Sara community in Etsuko West local
15:29government area as well as Auchi and Okpele communities all in Edo North Senatorial District of Edo State.
15:35During the operation, eight suspected kidnappers and illicit drug peddlers were arrested.
15:41The suspects were identified as Jamilu Muhammad, 25, Qasim Abu, 33, Rimo Afiz, 31, Suleiman Hamisu, 36, Lawan Umaru, 25,
15:55Bawa Awal, 24, Musa Umaru, 40, and Amodu Atai, 50.
16:01Weapons recovered from the suspects include one English auto-pump action gun, four live cartridges, and one locally made pistol.
16:09Other items seized were a point-of-sale, POS, machine, two cutlasses, a Nikon digital camera, two Android phones, a
16:19metal hook, five bottles of codeine syrup, two Indian hemp-weighing scales, and quantities of substances suspected to be cannabis
16:27sativa, tramadol, ice, loud and collos.
16:30The sum of 87,550 nairas was also recovered.
16:36The suspects and recovered items have been handed over to the Edo State Police Command for further investigation.
16:43In a related development, troops of four brigade, in conjunction with the Edo State Police Command also combed the Avili
16:51Forest in Etsuko West local government area aimed at flushing out suspected terrorists and kidnappers.
16:57During the raid, five suspected kidnappers, Issyaka Abu Bakar, 37, Muhammad Abu Bakar, 25, Yusuf Abu Bakar, 24, Muhammad Somu,
17:0920, and Issyaka Ibrahim, 30, were arrested.
17:14Items recovered from them include two motorcycles, two Android phones, and a power bank.
17:19The suspects and recovered items were also handed over to the police for further investigation.
17:26The commander, four brigade, Brigadier General Ahmed Balagun, who led the operations, commended the swift response and collaboration among the
17:35security agencies.
17:37He warned that Edo State will be untenable for terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal elements to carry out the nefarious
17:44activities.
17:44He also reaffirmed the brigade's commitment to safeguarding lives and properties in the state.
17:51He expressed appreciation to the general officer commanding, two division, Nigerian Army, Major General Shinidu Nebafay, for his strategic guidance
18:01and support.
18:01While ASP Edo State Police Command, public relations officer, had stated that, in continuation of the joint clearance operations,
18:12a meticulously executed night operation that underscores the resolve of synergized security forces to confront crime at its roots was
18:19conducted.
18:20The Edo State Police Command, in the early hours of Tuesday, the 3rd of February 2026, carried out a daring
18:28raid deep within the Agbede Forest,
18:30Etsico West local government area of Edo State, leading to the arrest of six suspects.
18:36The operation was launched following a critical intelligence breakthrough provided by a kidnapped victim who was able to clearly identify
18:44the forest camp where he had been held captive.
18:47Acting decisively on this lead, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Munday Agbonica,
18:55personally led a formidable joint team comprising the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army,
19:01the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, the Edo State Security Corps, ESSC,
19:09and local hunters into the heart of the forest under the cover of darkness.
19:13Demonstrating precision and determination, the joint team drove for approximately 3, 3, hours until the end of the last accessible
19:22motorable road.
19:23From that point, the operatives advanced on foot, navigating dense forest paths and crossing 3, 3, locally constructed wooden bridges
19:32to reach the identified camp.
19:34The silent advance, which lasted close to 2, 2, additional hours, ensured tactical surprise and prevented any compromise of the
19:43mission.
19:44Upon arrival at the location at about 3.45 a.m., the area was swiftly cordoned off in a well
19:51-coordinated encirclement, effectively cutting off all escape routes.
19:56A thorough sweep of the camp resulted in the arrest of 6 suspects identified as Mikel Jendiga, male, aged 41
20:05years, from Benawai State,
20:07Yusuf Abu Bakr, male, aged 34 years, from Kano State, Isyaka Abraham, male, aged 30 years, from Kobi State,
20:18Isyaka Abu Bakr, male, aged 37 years, from Kano State, Mohamed Sumo, male, aged 20 years, from Kano State,
20:30and Mohamed Abu Bakr, male, aged 25 years, from Kano State.
20:36The suspects are currently being profiled and subjected to intensive investigation by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID,
20:46Benin City, for diligent prosecution.
20:49Describing the operation as a clear message to criminal elements, the Commissioner of Police commends the courage, discipline,
20:56and seamless inter-agency collaboration displayed by all personnel involved.
21:01He reaffirms the command's determination to take the fight against organized crime to the abode of suspected criminals at their
21:08most remote locations
21:09and warned that Edo State forests will no longer serve as safe havens for criminals.
21:15The Edo State Police Command urges members of the public to remain vigilant and to continue supporting security agencies with
21:22timely and credible information,
21:24assuring citizens that sustained intelligence-led operations will remain a key strategy in securing lives and property across the state.
21:33Ossasua Koneedo, bringing youth the news in a more digital way.
21:38In this write-up, a legal practitioner, Njoku Jude Njoku pinpoints some fundamentals in the judgment passed against Mazi Namdekanu,
21:47by Justice James Omotosho which convicted and sentenced the Biafra Republic agitation leader to life imprisonment,
21:54and in this press release the legal practitioner issued in late 2025 entitled,
21:59The 24th of November 2025, the day evidence ceased to matter in Nigerian courts, judicial silence, selective justice, and media
22:09complicity,
22:10described Justice Omotosho as unprofessional, stating that,
22:14The most dangerous aspect of the judgment delivered by Justice James K. Omotosho,
22:19is not merely that it reached a foreordained conclusion,
22:22but that it did so by deliberately suppressing evidence he already admitted on record in his own court,
22:28thereby converting adjudication into a procedural facade.
22:32This was not an error of law or an oversight of fact.
22:35It was a calculated refusal to engage with material evidence whose evaluation would have fatally undermined the prosecution's narrative,
22:44empasing that,
22:45This case is no longer about one man.
22:47It is about whether courts may openly disregard admitted evidence and still be treated as legitimate,
22:54and whether the media will continue to mask such conduct through silence,
22:58a judiciary that can ignore evidence without explanation has ceased to function as a court of law,
23:03a media that refuses to question that silence has abdicated its public duty,
23:08together,
23:09they place the rule of law itself in existential peril.
23:13Continuing,
23:14In details,
23:15Injoku said,
23:17Once evidence is admitted,
23:18it binds the judge absolutely.
23:20The conduct,
23:22protest,
23:23silence,
23:23or alleged boycott of the defendant,
23:26Mazinamdikano,
23:27is legally irrelevant to that obligation.
23:30Judgment writing is not a negotiation with the accused.
23:33It is a solitary judicial duty anchored exclusively to the evidentiary record.
23:38A judge may reject defense evidence,
23:41but he must first confront it, evaluate it, and explain why it is rejected.
23:46Silence is not neutrality,
23:48silence is suppression.
23:50Had Justice Omatosho evaluated the admitted video exhibit of Theophilus,
23:55T.Y.,
23:56Danjuma,
23:57he would have been confronted with the inescapable reality that public calls for communities to arm themselves
24:02in self-defense against murderous violence were not unique to Nnamdi Kano,
24:07nor criminalized when made by powerful establishment figures,
24:11proper evaluation would have compelled the court to accept that Kano's calls for guns and bullets in Los Angeles, USA,
24:18or during broadcasts were framed as community self-defense against the ravages of armed Fulani killer herders,
24:24not incitement to lawless violence.
24:28Had Justice Omatosho evaluated the admitted video evidence of Governor Hope Uzudanma,
24:33he would have known,
24:34because Uzudanma stated it publicly,
24:37that neither Nnamdi Kano nor the IPOB had any hand in the killing of Ahmed Gulag.
24:42That single evaluation would have punctured one of the most politically weaponized allegations surrounding this case.
24:49Had Justice Omatosho listened to his fellow Yoruba kinsmen and Nigeria's intelligence chief,
24:56Adeola Oluwatosan Ajayi,
24:58whose statements were also admitted in evidence,
25:00he would have been forced to acknowledge that the formation of armed vigilante groups for community defense
25:06was openly endorsed at the highest levels of Nigeria's security establishment.
25:10That acknowledgement would have led inexorably to the conclusion
25:14that Kano was right to form to defend Igboland when the state failed to do so.
25:19Had Justice Omatosho evaluated the evidence surrounding Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry report on ENCE's violence,
25:27he would have seen the documentary trail showing that Nnamdi Kano repeatedly wrote to and consulted southeast governors,
25:33urging them to establish a regional security outfit similar to Emotekan.
25:38Their refusal, not Kano's, ambition, precipitated the formation of ESN.
25:44Proper judicial evaluation would have made clear that ESN was conceptually and functionally analogous to Emotekan,
25:52differing only in political acceptance, not in purpose.
25:56Had Justice Omatosho reviewed and evaluated the admitted report on ENCE's violence,
26:01he would have been confronted with authoritative findings that squarely blamed killings and violence on the army and police,
26:08not on Nnamdi Kano.
26:09That report decisively dismantles the lazy and dishonest attribution of nationwide violence to IPOB broadcasts
26:17and would have stripped the prosecution's claims of moral and evidentiary legitimacy.
26:22Had Justice Omatosho paid even minimal attention to chronology,
26:26he would have known that attributing post-June 2021 insecurity in the southeast to Nnamdi Kano
26:32is factually and logically impossible.
26:35From June 2021 onward, Kano was held in underground DSS detention,
26:41incommunicado, without access to telephones, visitors, counsel, or even his wife.
26:47A man locked in solitary confinement, denied all external communication,
26:52cannot simultaneously be directing events outside detention walls.
26:56Time itself disproves the allegation.
27:00The failure to reconcile alleged acts with undisputed detention timelines is not a minor evidentiary lapse.
27:06It is a collapse of basic judicial reasoning.
27:10Courts that ignore timelines abandon causation,
27:12and once causation is abandoned,
27:15conviction becomes a matter of narrative convenience rather than proof.
27:19These were not speculative arguments.
27:21They were admitted exhibits.
27:23Their collective evaluation would have collapsed the architecture of the conviction.
27:27That is precisely why they were ignored.
27:30The refusal to evaluate this evidence was not accidental.
27:34It was not procedural.
27:36It was outcome-driven.
27:37Justice Omatosho ignored them because he was operating under an overriding imperative to convict by all means,
27:44regardless of the evidentiary record.
27:46This is the gravest danger such a judgment poses.
27:49It signals to the judiciary that evidence may be admitted, buried, and erased at the judgment stage without consequence.
27:57Even more disturbing is the silence of major international media organizations,
28:02none of which asked the most basic question any law student would pose.
28:07Why did the court ignore defense evidence it had itself admitted?
28:10By reproducing the conclusions of the judgment without interrogating its evidentiary omissions,
28:16these media houses became unwitting accomplices in the laundering of judicial misconduct.
28:22This case is no longer about one man.
28:25It is about whether courts may openly disregard admitted evidence and still be treated as legitimate,
28:31and whether the media will continue to mask such conduct through silence.
28:35A judiciary that can ignore evidence without explanation has ceased to function as a court of law.
28:41A media that refuses to question that silence has abdicated its public duty.
28:47Together, they place the rule of law itself in existential peril.
