00:03The Dyson Pencil Vac is the most streamlined vacuum I've ever used. It's lightweight, nimble and
00:09pivots extremely smoothly. You can hold it either way around and with a bit of practice you can even
00:14make the floor head do figure eights. It's not built for use on carpet but on hard floor it's
00:18a stellar cleaner. The battery life is limited and the dust cup is small but those are necessary
00:22compromises for the compact design. This is a genuinely impressive feat of engineering from
00:26Dyson and a useful one at that. The design here is really quite unique. There's no visible battery
00:34motor, filter or dust cup section. Instead all of that is shrunk down and hidden within the wand
00:40which itself measures just 1.5 inches under 4 centimeters in diameter. At the business end
00:45you'll find the new fluffy cones floor head. It sounds like a pokemon but it's actually a reimagined
00:50cleaner head with four cone-shaped rollers. These are entirely covered with soft fluffy fabric which is
00:55perfect for getting right up close to the flat surface of your hard floors without risking
00:59scratches. It's not well suited to carpet though because there's nothing to agitate the fibers
01:03and release embedded dirt. The tapering shape is designed specifically as a way to deal with long
01:08hair. Rather than tangling around the brush roll the strands should make their way down to the narrow
01:12end of the cone where they can drop off in a clump and be vacuumed away. The rollers rotate in
01:16opposite
01:16directions and because it's all basically symmetrical you can clean from either side of the floor head.
01:21Dyson has also added a green laser to the front and back sides to highlight specks of dirt that
01:25might otherwise be missed. To turn the vacuum on you press a button on the handle and there's a
01:29second button that cycles between the three suction levels. The screen below the buttons will spell out
01:34how much cleaning time you have left on the clock. Battery life is limited at a maximum of 30 minutes
01:39per
01:39charge. I think that's a result the battery needing to be small and light. Another casualty of the
01:43streamlined form factor is that the dust cup is small just 80 millilitres. Dust collects at the top end of
01:49the
01:49bin and Dyson has added a compression system that uses air to squish down the particles and maximize the space.
01:58You might be wondering why I haven't mentioned how much the Pencilvac costs. That's because I received
02:03my review model early and I don't know the price yet. At the time of recording this the Pencilvac is
02:07just
02:08about to launch in the UK and has been on sale in Australia for a few months. US droppers will
02:13have to
02:13wait until an as yet unspecified date in 2026 to get their hands on one though. Based on Australian
02:19pricing and what I know about Dyson it's a fair bet that the Pencilvac will be quite expensive and that
02:24you'll have to pay a bit of a premium for the unique form factor. Aside from the innovative design this
02:28vacuum feels high quality and well built. So what's the Dyson Pencilvac like to use? In terms of comfort and
02:40different grip you hold this cleaner like a broom rather than like a traditional stick vacuum but
02:44it's very light in the hand and it maneuvers incredibly well. You can use it forwards or
02:48backwards and the floor head pivots like a dream and with the detail tool attached it's really easy
02:52to clean up high or in tight spaces. The cones extend right to the edge of the floor head so
02:56you can get
02:57right up to the edges of rooms. That's a good thing because the angled front side of the floor head
03:01can't get flush to the wall. If you can't approach side on getting a thorough edge clean is very tricky.
03:06Generally lightweight vacuums tend to be less powerful and that holds true for the Pencilvac.
03:11There's 55 air watts of suction which is less than half that of any other Dyson cordless.
03:16The design of the floor head doesn't lend itself to being ultra sucky either. Usually the casing
03:21around the edges would descend to the floor on all four sides creating a vacuum in the original sense
03:25of the word to improve pickup. Here the casing is partial. All that is very acceptable if you're just
03:31using the Pencilvac on smooth hard flooring which is how it's intended to be used. But if you're seeking
03:35something for carpets or even a vacuum that'll pull the dirt from the cracks and crevices in your
03:40floorboards this is not it. Used on the large tiles that cover my kitchen floor the Pencilvac
03:44would work like a dream. It appeared to hover across the floor whisking away clouds of dog hair as it
03:49went. I could tell it was doing a good job because the lasers do a stellar job of illuminating the
03:53tiniest
03:54specks of lingering dirt.
03:59So should you buy the Dyson Pencilvac? If you want something lightweight and agile for hard flooring
04:03then absolutely. There's nothing on the market that's as nimble or as compact. It's not an all
04:08rounder. It's not for use on carpet for starters and the battery life is limited. But in this specific
04:13niche it's outstanding and truly an impressive feat of engineering from Dyson. You'll find links to my
04:18full review as well as the best prices for the Pencilvac right now in the video description below. If you
04:22have any thoughts or questions I'd love to hear them so drop them in the comments.
