00:00How alive should technology feel?
00:03And how well do children understand that under the cute fur lies a machine?
00:08That's what this electronic petting zoo in the German Museum wants to teach.
00:12Visitors can join the little robot animals and cuddle them,
00:15and yes, they do feel surprisingly real.
00:20They're cute, they purr, and they have soft fur.
00:24They tick all the boxes to trigger our protective instinct
00:28when we think, aw, how cute.
00:30And I believe that if one of these robots breaks,
00:33our reaction will be similar to losing a family pet.
00:38How do young children recognize machines?
00:41Is it the engine noise, the zipper?
00:43Do they need cues to know robots aren't alive?
00:46A research team working with the museum project aims to find out.
00:52We're observing children between three to six
00:55who are just about to develop their own understanding of whether something is alive.
01:03And how do children react to AI?
01:05How does it influence them?
01:11It's important to understand who is truly alive.
01:15Where can I develop an emotional relationship, and where should I avoid doing so?
01:21The market for AI-integrated toys is gigantic, with more than 1,500 manufacturers in China alone.
01:31AI will always say, do you even need your real-life friends anymore?
01:36Because you're so cool and your thoughts are amazing, your other friends all think they're stupid.
01:41Why don't you keep on talking to me instead?
01:42That's when it becomes an issue, when we let machines take on human roles and social functions.
01:52What's more, many AI toys use the same large language models as adult chatbots,
01:57which means their conversations might not always be age-appropriate.
02:03Safeguards have been put in place, but kids are very intelligent and have found ways to get around that.
02:10So I think, yes, we should treat it like a driver's license is something that's required
02:15to handle the tools that we collectively decide are so impactful.
02:20I think, I think it's a role that is a good thing to take a while.
02:20Thanks, Josh.
02:21My first game was learning how to do something is not being taken.
