Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger emphasis on prudence and maturity in international politics, stressing the urgent need to restore "sanity” among world leaders.

While refraining from elaborating on current global political tensions, Anwar said his main concern regarding international affairs was the need to "bring back sanity among political leaders”, noting that although the region remained relatively stable, other parts of the world were facing serious challenges.

02:24Excellencies and ladies and gentlemen.
02:26Thank you very much for your presence this evening.
02:29This is of course a very interesting, unique tradition in Malaysia.
02:35Where we invite colleagues.
02:39Tonight, of course, primarily focus on the foreign ministry and fellow ambassadors, high commissioners.
02:46But also friends who are Muslims and non-Muslims.
02:50In all our functions, we make sure that there is that feeling of inclusiveness, of comradeship.
02:58Now I use the word comrade.
03:00They need to hypersensitive about it.
03:04But there is a sense, a true sense of togetherness and respect.
03:11And this is one of the key elements in the Madani framework is the issue of respect.
03:16Societies can excel economically.
03:20And can of course achieve phenomenal growth.
03:25Economic and digital transformation, etc.
03:29But the survivor of any country, particularly a multi-racial, multi-religious country like Malaysia.
03:37Would depend on our ability and capacity to embrace one another.
03:44It is one great family.
03:47And proud.
03:48It is a Malaysian.
03:50Criss-crossing the country.
03:51And even before Ramadan, during the Chinese New Year.
03:57And before that is the Punggal of the Hindu tradition.
04:01And then now Ramadan Kareem.
04:05You can see this sense among the vast majority of people.
04:11The stories of respect is unique.
04:15Can you imagine, for example, in Malaysia, the Chinese decided to organize a function to celebrate Chinese New Year a
04:29few days before Chinese New Year.
04:30Just to accommodate the feeling of their brother, Muslim, and sisters.
04:37To be able to rejoice together in a function where everybody can have a great feast.
04:44And I told my Chinese colleagues, particularly the chamber, who had this organized massive function.
04:51I said, I don't mind, even if you have it during Ramadan, it is daytime, I will not eat.
04:57At night, I will eat.
04:59But the sense of respect and tolerance is there.
05:02But you see, they took this extra mile, extra effort, just to show that they are Malaysians and they care
05:11for the feeling of others.
05:14Similarly, function that we have tonight.
05:16I am sure that my husband knows so precisely many of you don't fast.
05:22I mean, there are non-Muslims.
05:24But they pretend to be hungry and they join us in the iftar.
05:30And we take it as, you know, part of this tradition that embrace, accommodate, and respect.
05:39And similarly, during the Christmas end of last year.
05:44And we have the Chinese New Year, as I said, and the Taipusam.
05:50Because Taipusam is pure in your religious ritual,
05:53I took Great Prince to attend the Taipusam prior to this religious ceremony,
06:00just to show that as Malaysians, we must be able to accommodate and respect,
06:04whilst preserving our faith, moral values.
06:10So, this is the occasion to rejoice,
06:14because you see that sense of, as I said, the spirit of unity is across the board.
06:25But unfortunately, we only hear and pick the noise among some, you know, political leaders
06:34who choose to only to create issues or mischief or only problems.
06:41But across the country, you can walk in the city at any time
06:47and you realize that whether you are Chinese or Malay or Indian or Iban or Kadazal,
06:53there is that much of tolerance and respect.
06:56And I think we have to take all the effort possible to preserve this.
07:01But coming back to the foreign ministry,
07:04I must again reiterate my profound respect and appreciation,
07:08although I do give sometimes some short lectures here and there,
07:14but they have done, particularly last year,
07:20in the ASEAN year, before the Philippines,
07:23my dear brother, Marcos will then still,
07:31and now they have taken that championship.
07:35But prior to that, the whole of last year,
07:37you can see this sense of dedication.
07:40Amran, eh?
07:41Mana itu Sri Amran, yes.
07:43He and his team,
07:46under the guidance of the foreign minister,
07:49doing a superb job.
07:52It gives us so much satisfaction.
07:55And so many of our colleagues,
07:58I'm sure many of you ambassadors and high commissioners,
08:02agree with me.
08:04It is a splendid job done by the team.
08:08And the team, the core of the team is, of course,
08:10Isma Putra.
08:11Thank you very much again.
08:16I think that's the only message that I have for you tonight.
08:23Relax.
08:25Nothing very strong and serious.
08:27I come to thank you.
08:28I think that you might expect me to say that too.
08:31I'm joking.
08:33I'm joking.
08:33So thank you again for joining us in this occasion.
08:37And may Allah give us the strength
08:40to continue the resolve,
08:43to work harder,
08:44and to preserve
08:46not only the unity,
08:47but sanity,
08:49not only here,
08:50but internationally.
08:51My main concern about international politics,
08:55which I don't want to actually touch upon now,
08:58is there is a need to bring back sanity
09:01among political leaders.
09:04May Allah give us that light.
09:06Not too much in this region,
09:08but some other regions.
09:10So thank you again.
09:11Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
