Hundreds of charities in Pakistan are offering free Iftar meals to people struggling to feed their families due to soaring food prices.

00:08This is just one of the many iftar meal gatherings
00:11organized by charities.
00:17The shopkeepers donated funds for iftar.
00:21Mostly laborers, shopkeepers, neighbors and travelers
00:24break fast in this mosque. They've been served biryani,
00:28juices and other foods.
00:32According to the World Bank, nearly 45% of Pakistan's
00:36population lives in poverty. During the month of Ramadan,
00:40prices often rise due to massive demand for staple items
00:44and with inflation still high, it is hard for many to
00:47afford a balanced iftar meal.
00:51I have purchased ration for Ramadan, but the prices of essential
00:56commodities are very high.
00:58But we are compelled to buy food for Ramadan.
01:00The back-breaking inflation has affected the common man.
01:04It would be good for poor people like us if prices for essentials
01:08are reduced.
01:12During the month of Ramadan, millions of Pakistanis give zakat,
01:16an important pillar of Islam.
01:19Muslims who can afford it donate roughly 2.5% of their wealth
01:23as charity to the poor.
01:26This charity organization in Karachi is packing up food for people in need.
01:33Shirinai Bibi is among those who benefit from the food packs.

01:40I have five children, three daughters and two sons.
01:43My husband was a cancer patient and he died last year.
01:47We do some small jobs to earn livelihood.
01:50And these food packages given by charity organization also help us.
01:55Sometimes we have food, but sometimes we do not have food.
01:58We are also not able to pay the monthly house rent.
