00:01Victoria Police say around 1,700 poppy plants grown for the pharmaceutical industry were stolen from a regional property near
00:10Ballarat.
00:11Police say they believe the thieves stole the plants between February 17 and 16.
00:16Victoria's Department of Health have now issued a warning with concerns that the toxic plants could cause unpredictable and potentially
00:23life-threatening effects if ingested.
00:25The department says the stolen alkaloid poppy plant heads were very different from traditional opioid poppies and contain dangerously high
00:33concentrations of chemicals including thibane and aripivine.
00:37The stolen poppies contain only trace amounts of morphine and codeine found in traditional opioid poppies.
00:43Thibane can lead to seizures, high body temperature and life-threatening toxicity.
00:47The Department of Health said poppy plant products, which could include dried flower heads without petals, ground material or liquid
00:55preparations, may be dangerous.
00:57In 2022, at least 40 people experienced life-threatening conditions after consuming thibane-contaminated poppy seed tea.
01:05Victoria Police are still investigating the theft and are calling on any potential witnesses to come forward.
01:10bees are treating the theft and are laughing its own right until the maintenance of the sameadd plant has been
01:11distracted by keeping the sheep's native krabs.
