00:16more than 1,500 requests for the release of prisoners.
00:23On Saturday, United States President Donald Trump announced that he will impulse a 15%
00:28global tariff as an attempt to confront the Supreme Court ruling that struck down his
00:32previous import taxes.
00:38In Palestine, thousands of displaced people are facing a new health crisis following the
00:42widespread proliferation of fleas in the tents in the south of the Gaza Strip.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:53I'm Sophie Fernandez from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:11Following the recent approval of the Amnesty Law, the Venezuelan government is processing
01:15more than 1,500 requests for the release of prisoners, which are being handled immediately
01:21and continuously.
01:22The President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, reported that 1,557 requests being
01:29received from prisoners are being processed immediately for their prompt release.
01:33Also the lifting of the alternative measures to imprisonment, which were applied to 11,000
01:38people, is being evaluated.
01:40These measures include court appearances and house arrests.
01:43In addition, Jorge Rodriguez recalled that the regulations also provide for the recognition
01:47and care of victims of political violence, so that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.
02:03The President of the Venezuelan parliament, Jorge Rodriguez, reported that the Amnesty Law
02:07is already benefiting thousands of people, with the release of those deprived of their liberty
02:12and the lifting of alternative measures.
02:18As of yesterday, we had 405 requests from people deprived of their freedom.
02:25Today, we have received an additional 1,152 requests for a total of 1,557, which are being processed immediately.
02:36And at this moment, hundreds of people deprived of their liberty are being released under the
02:43Amnesty Law.
02:44But we also have, and it is contemplated in the law, 11,000 people who received the justice
02:50system.
02:51Venezuela received alternative measures to the probation of liberty, that is, they were deprived
02:57of their liberty, but now they are under a regime of reporting or house arrest.
03:02And the law provides for these alternative measures to be lifted so that people can enjoy full freedom.
03:10In this regard, we are processing the request of more than 11,000 people who were under substitute
03:16regimes in the justice system's deprivation of liberty system.
03:20And those 11,000 people will be attended to by the Amnesty Law Follow-Up Committee.
03:31In other news from Venezuela, acting president del Señor Rodríguez toured the sovereign field

03:41along with other authorities.

03:48at fair and affordable prices for the Venezuelan people.
03:51The fair is expected to benefit 17,624 residents, distributed across eight communities.
03:58Additionally, 80.4 tons of food are being distributed, of which 44 tons are animal protein and the
04:05remainder consists of groceries, vegetables and fruits.
04:09Different sovereign field fairs are a social program promoted by the national government
04:12and the Ministry of the Popular Power for Food to provide assistance to vulnerable communities
04:17through an open-air market.
04:26And Venezuela's acting president del Señor Rodríguez conducted a rest-throughout review of
04:30the process made by the Labor Constituent Assembly, with the aim of protecting the benefits
04:35of the Venezuelan workforce.
04:38The official insurance indicated that these meetings allow for the adjustment of proposals
04:42for technological and organizational innovation in public and private companies.
04:47She also emphasized that wage production and social security are a priority for the state,
04:52and that the new regulatory frameworks will strengthen the active participation of employees
04:57in the management of industrial and administrative processes.
05:00The national government assured that each advance will translate into tangible improvement
05:05for working families.
05:12And we are at the headquarters of one of the country's most important private producers,
05:18and what we are seeing is the same reaction.
05:20It is the new economy for Venezuela, the model we have called for, an economy that does not
05:25depend on oil, that does not depend on all revenues.
05:28A diversified economy with all 14 powers of the Bolivarian economic agenda and the great potential
05:35that Venezuela has.
05:36We have also seen how important inversors from all around the world are coming to Venezuela
05:41to boost the country's productive engines.
05:46An internationalist brigades for peace and solidarity with Venezuela demands the release
05:51of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores.

06:45Welcome back to From the South. We continue with more information.
06:49In the United States, the Supreme Court has deprived the Trump administration
06:52of its most used weapon of blackmail against the world,
06:56the indiscriminated imposition of terrorists through the International Emergency Powers Act.
07:00Our correspondent in the U.S., Henry Camelo, has all the details.
07:05The United States Supreme Court struck down the Trump administration by declaring illegal
07:11the imposition of tariffs through the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
07:18Chief Justice Roberts wrote the decision that basically stated that Trump was exceeding his authority.
07:28The decision does not affect all tariffs imposed by Trump administration,
07:33as it maintains those imposed on steel and aluminum through separate laws.
07:38However, the court ruling voids tariffs in two categories.
07:43One, reciprocal tariffs range from 34% for China to a base limit of up to 10% for the
07:52rest of the world.
07:53The other, the 25% tariffs that Trump imposed on some products from Canada, China and Mexico due to their
08:02alleged inability to stop the flow of fentanyl.
08:06According to the Treasury Department data, by December, $133 billion have been collected in tariffs under the International Emergency Economic
08:17Powers Act.
08:18The court ruling enraged President Trump, who launched harsh criticism against the Supreme Court.
08:25What a shame, having to do with voting in particular, when in fact they're just being fools and lapdogs for
08:33the Rhinos and the radical left Democrats,
08:35and not that this should have anything at all to do with it.
08:39They're very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution.
08:42And he promised to look for other ways to implement the collection of tariffs.
08:48We have alternatives. Great alternatives. Could be more money. We'll take in more money.
08:54And we'll be a lot stronger for it. We're taking in hundreds of billions of dollars. We'll continue to do
09:00so.
09:00Trump reacted immediately to that by stating that he would use other means in order to impose these tariffs.
09:11And immediately stating that he now is imposing 10% tariffs across the board.
09:17For analyst Steve Elner, the Supreme Court's decision sets a solid precedent for the balance of power in the United
09:26States.
09:27Regardless of whether he continues to attempt to use the threat of tariffs for political purposes,
09:35the mere fact that they annulled a decision of the Trump administration in the area of tariffs, I think will
09:49encourage countries to attempt to defend their national sovereignty.
09:59In other words, Trump has really violated the national sovereignty of other countries using the threat of tariffs.
10:06Now the governors of Illinois and California are demanding checks from the Trump administration for over $1,000 for families
10:14in those states to cover the cost they incur in their homes due to the tariffs.
10:20Thank you very much.
10:22Thank you very much.
10:22Pablo Daniel Jo and Henry Camelo, TELESUR, New York.
10:31Announced right today, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will impose a 15% global tariff in an
10:36attempt to confront the Supreme Court ruling that struck down his previous import taxes.
10:41According to a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump announced the increase from 10% to 15%.
10:47The move was based on a review of the decision issued by the Supreme Court on Friday.
10:52Previously, the President had announced a 10% global tariff.
10:56The 10% tariffs were said to take effect on Tuesday, February 24th.
11:00While it is unclear whether the increased 15% tariff will also be imposed starting then.
11:22Around 56 million people in the Northeastern United States are on the winter weather alerts, including 40 million in New
11:30York.
11:30This is the first time in nine years that a blizzard warning has been issued for the Big Apple.
11:36The National Water Service increases forecasts for the severity of the storm, affecting the mid-Atlantic and Appalachian regions, including
11:44cities such as Philadelphia, Delaware, Boston and New York.
11:48Where 9 to 18 inches of snow are expected, the storm will be fully formed by Sunday, bringing heavy snowfall
11:54and wind gusts to most of the northwestern part of the country.
11:57The alert will remain in effect until Monday.
12:07Moving out to Spain, on Saturday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his commitment to achieving real equality for the Roma
12:14people in Spain and fighting the discrimination they face.
12:17He also won two of the country's highest honors, one of two singers, Lolita Flores, and the other two guitarist,
12:23Jose Antonio Carmona, known as Pepe Avicuela.
12:26An event commemorating the 600th anniversary of the arrival of the Romani people in Spain, held at the Palacio de
12:34Moncloa.
12:35Official residents of Sanchez highlighted their contributions to the country's culture and history.
12:41The Roma arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in 1425, when Alfonso V of Aragon mentioned them in a safe contact
12:49as people from Lesser Egypt.
12:59Also in Spain, the Sumar movement, United Left and Mass Malid, announced a new alliance in the context of general
13:06elections.
13:06During Saturday, hundreds of supporters and political party leaders gathered at the Common House to discuss new political strategies.
13:15House Minister Monica Garcia reaffirmed her commitment with democracy in the country, in the face of the advance of the
13:21far right.
13:22Supporters agreed to open and reinforce the debate on the future of the left and to seek the participation of
13:28citizens in the elections,
13:29with the aim of a weakening interest in young people.
13:39In other news, at least five migrants died and 25 are missing after a boat sank off the island of
13:45Kret in Greece on Saturday.
13:47At the time of this incident, strong winds were blowing in the area and the waves were reaching 2.5
13:53meters in high.
13:54The occupants of the boat on the high seas called the emergency number.
13:57There were about 50 people on board, 20 of whom were rescued alive by a merchant ship that responded to
14:03the call for help.
14:05The Greek Coast Guard and the Frontex Agency continued to search and rescue efforts in the area.
14:11During the operation, the authorities detected another boat with about 40 migrants on board, initiating a second rescue operation.
14:25In more information, Guinea-Bissau has counseled a US-funded study that sought to evaluate potential side effects of the
14:31hepatitis B vaccine.
14:33The clinical trial aimed to administer the vaccine to 14,000 newborns.
14:37The research, which sought to evaluate the side effects of the vaccine, including a possible link to autism, was suspended
14:44due to the ethical concerns.
14:46Researchers urged the World's organization to promote only approved treatments and not to use children inexperienced by large multinational corporations.

15:46Welcome back.
15:47The Israeli government has imposed new restrictions to further hinder the entry of humanitarian organizations into the Gaza Strip and
15:55the West Bank.
15:55The decision was made by a ministerial committee that requires humanitarian organizations to re-register under strict security protocols,
16:04including submitted detailed personal information on all the Palestinian staffers, including subjecting them to direct scrutiny.
16:12The Israeli government has revoked registrations for several international institutions operating in the Palestinian territory.
16:19On their part, the concerted organizations have denounced this action, emphasizing that they provide assistance to thousands of people amidst
16:26the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Palestinian enclave.
16:38Meanwhile in Palestine, thousands of displaced people are facing a new house crisis, following the widespread proliferation of fleas in
16:45the towns of the south of the Gaza Strip.
16:47The lack of personnel for insect control and the deterioration of living conditions in the coastal enclave doubled the suffering
16:53of the people and increased the husk risk, especially for children and elderly people.
16:59Husk workers warn that they are experiencing a deadly stalemate as the result of the continuous siege and lack of
17:05medical supplies.
17:06The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is escalating as a result of the Zionist army's destruction and blockade of essential supplies.
17:21In this context, more than 40,000 Palestinian children lost at least one parent during the Israeli siege, facing the
17:27worst orphan crisis in history.
17:29The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, warned that the figure does not reflect the true crisis facing Palestinian children and
17:37is working on family reunification programs to provide psychological support.
17:41In this scenario, family members care for the children, although many are forced to take on adult responsibilities to survive
17:48in displaced people centers.
17:50The international organization described the psychological artifacts as a stolen childhood and called for urgent action.
18:04Also in Palestine, thousands of worshippers gathered in the Ibrahimi Bosque in Hebron to perform the first major prayer of
18:12the month of Ramadan amid high tension and strict Israeli restrictions.
18:17Sinai soldiers allowed us through only one point from early morning on, and the street control measures caused critical congestion,
18:24making it difficult for ambulances to pass.
18:26Stranded citizens were forced to pray in the nearby streets and in the market area of the old city, under
18:32a heavy military presence.
18:34Local leaders described the blockade as a violation of the right to freedom of worship on a day of utmost
18:39spiritual importance.
18:48In this context, chariots organized a communal breakfast in Palestine during the month of Ramadan amidst a resistance and love
18:55and life.
18:56Hundreds of Palestinian families shared a communal breakfast in the Havaliyah camp, north of the Gaza Strip amidst the ruins
19:04left by Israeli devastation.
19:06Participants affirmed that despite the siege and destruction, the event seeks to alleviate the suffering of children and keep the
19:12spirit of solidarity alive.
19:13This is a measure of resistance and a celebration of life in the face of all its challenges.
19:25Moving on to Lebanon, an Israeli air strike on the Ain al-Hilwe refugee camp in the city of Saida
19:31left a preliminary toll of two dead and several wounded.
19:34The silent aggression carried by drones struck the Hathi neighborhood just an hour before Iftar, where people prepared to break
19:42their fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
19:45Following the bombing, continuous drone-over flights were reported over the city and its surroundings, generating panic among residents.
19:52Local authorities denounced these actions as a direct violation of the ceasefire agreement, in effect since November 2024 and of
20:01the United Nations Resolution 1701.
20:09In a similar incident, another aggression took place in Lebanon's Beka Valley, which killed 10 and wounded 40.
20:16Authorities said the attack targeted a residential building near a gas-bottling plant, which was completely destroyed.
20:22Similarly, other attacks were reported in the Casca Navas Plain and the city of Bainagil, as another building near the
20:31main highway was targeted.
20:55In China, during the Spring Festival, the Great Wall becomes a stage for various cultural activities.
21:00The festival includes cultural celebrations that blend authentic Chinese traditions with entertainment,
21:06attracting thousands of tourists.
21:08The performances included traditional lion and dragon dances,
21:12which creates a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere.
21:15Thus, the Great Wild China is transformed into a unique space for visitors,
21:19showcasing the living environment of the continuity of Chinese traditions in one of the world's wonders.
21:32And like this, we say go back to From the South.
