00:05The smoke was so thick, it was pretty hard to see, 20 metres probably, if that.
00:13He swept through his 30 hectares of vineyard he'd planted in the mid-90s.
00:18So Grant, these vines have been really badly scorched. Are they sapable?
00:22No, I don't think they are. The fire's gotten that hot.
00:27You see the trunks and cordons have actually split and the trellising's pretty much destroyed too.
00:34So I don't think they're saveable at all.
00:39And 30 years old and on the point of harvest, pretty heartbreaking to see what happened.
00:43Yeah, yeah. A lot of money already been spent on them just this year, just to get them to this
00:48point.
00:49Harvest not too far away, yeah. Yeah, it's sort of heartbreaking really, yeah.
00:57When the fire changed direction, Grant Terrish also lost a large number of sheep.
01:02Of those that survived, many had suffered horrific burns.
01:07So we've lost about 1800 ewes, which died or euthanised after the fire and we had to sell another 700
01:16or so direct to the abs.
01:18So they have udder damage and feet damage and stuff, so yeah.
01:23They weren't saveable. And then...
01:24No. Yeah, so you've got not only that loss, but then the loss of their future earnings as well.
01:29Yes, yeah, yeah. So down the track's going to be when it hurts more financially at the moment.
01:35It's not as bad, but you know, in a year when we haven't got those lambs to sell or we
01:40haven't got that crop of Pinot Noir, wine or fruit to sell.
01:44In the meantime, just endless jobs from fencing through to cleaning up, moving dangerous trees.
01:50There is no shortage of repair work.
01:52Yeah, this is going to be years just to clean up. Yeah, just a massive job in here just to
01:57clean up.
01:58As you can see, there's wires and steel posts and staples. It's huge.
02:04This region is home to a large horse industry as well.
02:08We're known as a thoroughbred region and many, many farms were impacted.
02:13Including Lindsay Park, a 600 hectare, world class complex, one of Australia's largest private horse training facilities.
02:21And the base of the Hayes family, one of the nation's most successful horse racing dynasties.
02:29When the catastrophic fire weather peaked on Friday, January 9, the family and its staff were prepared.
02:35As much as was humanly possible when there's an inferno sweeping down on you.
02:40The reason we chose to evacuate the west side of the property is that when the wind change came through,
02:45the 12 kilometre side of the fire became the front of the fire.
02:47So we knew we were likely to be impacted.
02:50Unfortunately, the catastrophic fire conditions on the Friday meant that the whole property burnt except for irrigated areas.
02:58First off, you'll see the
