00:00Were you getting secondhand smoke at all?
00:02Um, I realized later on in life that, uh, probably my whole life.
00:08Yeah.
00:08You know, I used to think that smell was overheated speakers because it was always real music.
00:13They're working hard.
00:15And then I smelled it on the beach and I was like, there's no music out here, you know?
00:20But yeah, I didn't see nothing too crazy, except you can't control what the crowd does.
00:24And you know, just flashing here and there.
00:27Yeah.
00:27Eight, nine years old.
00:31Do you remember when you came in last year and then you went viral for saying that Luigi Mangione,
00:38everyone asks you why you play Luigi Mangione.
00:40And now it's been a year.
00:41Next question.
00:42And no one's asked.
00:42There's nothing.
00:43Next question.
00:44Yeah, I know.
00:44I'm not touching that.
00:46No.
00:46I'm not.
00:47Because then everyone was like, ask more stuff like that to other people.
00:52And I was like, no, I'm not doing viral stuff to other people.
00:55I'm not doing that camera.
00:55I know.
00:56No, that is great.
00:58I'm not saying a word.
01:00What I do want to ask is I think this is in your video, the video that you made, like
01:04all the directors for Sundance have made like a little video kind of entering.
01:07And you teased a little story about how, I wrote it down, 2017.
01:12Peter Dinklage bought you a beer here and then cut to now this movie is made.
01:18Yeah.
01:19Can you elaborate?
01:21Because that sounds like a fantastic story.
01:22Yeah.
01:23He invited me out.
01:24He had seen my movie and he liked it.
01:26And he invited me out.
01:26So we just chatted.
01:29And then he made a crucial error and gave me his phone number.
01:32And this was when Game of Thrones is at the height of its popularity.
01:35And so every Sunday night, I might get a beer or two in me and text him about like, are
01:39you going to wind up on the Iron Throne tonight?
01:41And he's like, ha, ha, ha.
01:42And he very diplomatically put up with that.
01:45But from there, we got into talking about scripts and he invited me to work on some projects
01:50with him and I invited him.
01:53And then he was a big part of the financing package of this movie.
01:57So realistically, that beer then helped get this movie made.
02:00Wow.
02:01When you were putting the financing together, was there ever a working title or were you
02:06always like, it must be the shitheads?
02:08It was always, the title predates the script in a way.
02:11Like we had the premise, the producer and I, Alex.
02:13And we were, I was kind of figuring out the broad strokes and we were just kicking titles
02:18around and I pitched that one to him jokingly and it made him laugh.
02:22And then I got, I was like, oh, it made him laugh.
02:24And so then I got attached to it and became unable to move away from it.
02:28So it just stuck.
02:29We've been waiting for someone along the way to tell us that we can't do it.
02:33But now we're here.
02:34It's out there.
02:35You can't change it now.
02:36Did anyone ever suggest like an asterisk in any of the, no?
02:39They haven't yet.
02:40But I mean, you know, it's kind of, what's the difference?
02:43Yeah.
02:43That's true.
02:46Is it, how many jokes are people, like, are you already sick of the joke?
02:49Cause like when you guys are coming and we're like, bring the shitheads in.
02:52We love it.
02:52Is that, okay.
02:55Cause also we've realized through this process, there's different types of shitheads.
02:59It's nuanced.
03:00There's very endearing shitheads out there.
03:02We are.
03:03You're right.
03:03Bring us in.
03:04We are shitheads.
03:05There we go.
03:05You know, of different levels.
03:07There's levels to this shit.
03:09Absolutely.
03:09Shane, where do you, where do you fall on the ranking of shitheads amongst this group?
03:14What are we?
03:14Are we talking about, talking one through two?
03:16Natural instinct.
03:17Yeah.
03:17One through five.
03:18One through five.
03:18One through five.
03:19Are you the most shithead-y or the least?
03:22I'm, I'm right in the middle.
03:24Okay.
03:25Safe answer.
03:26Safe answer.
03:27Right in the middle.
03:28But who's at the top?
03:29Who's at the very top?
03:30Out of the five of us.
03:30Who's at the top?
03:31A hundred percent, Mason.
03:35A hundred percent.
03:36A hundred percent.
03:37He's doing good.
03:38He's doing good work.
03:40He's doing good work.
03:43How long have you been carrying that or waiting to, or are you whipping that out all
03:45the time?
03:46Oh yeah.
03:46Oh yes.
03:47Yeah.
03:47Cause two days before we came here, I hit the group chat, you know, me, Dave and Mason
03:54and Dave jumped the bombshell.
03:56Yeah.
03:56Yeah.
03:56Group chatter.
03:57Just three people.
03:58Yes.
03:59So many times.
04:02I, you know, Dave, let me know that Mason couldn't come.
04:05Cause he's filming how to train your dragon too.
04:07He's highly successful.
04:09We get it.
04:09And so Amazon, uh, got my money and I, I got me a, a hiccup Funko and also wore a
04:16hiccup
04:16tee on the red carpet or carpet.
04:20It wasn't red, but the carpet, uh, just to show our, our guy that we think about him.
04:25And, uh, he's included in all the press for his first Sunday.
04:28That's lovely.
04:28We love Mason Thames, but I guess objectively the biggest shithead in the group.
04:32Sure.
04:34I mean, he didn't show up.
04:36So that's pretty shithead if you ask me.
04:38Hmm.
04:39What?
04:40When you guys.
04:41I know, I know.
04:41He's so employed.
04:43He's so employed.
04:44The most employed.
04:46Cause you guys were all quite available to come to this.
04:50I'm just kidding.
04:52I obviously was too.
04:54It's a Sunday and I'm here for a Saturday.
04:57No, no, no.
05:00Who's the most out of work here?
05:02Continue.
05:02Continue.
05:03Um, when, when the email like comes in about this.
05:08Is this the kind of thing where it's like, what, what strikes your eye?
05:11Is it the title of the film?
05:13Then you're like, Oh God, I need to know more.
05:15Or like what?
05:16Yeah.
05:16Yeah.
05:17That's a good subject line.
05:18Plus make it.
05:19Yeah.
05:19Yeah.
05:20Yeah.
05:20I feel like that equals.
05:22Oh, I'm listening.
05:24Did anybody have any questions about their character before they said yes?
05:32Yeah.
05:33Um, I, I, uh, I got my, the kind of my, my foot in the doors were from a text
05:39from Dave.
05:40Um, he let me know that he had this project and he wanted me to be a part of.
05:46It was a role that he felt like I could, I could kill.
05:49And so, you know, he, he wanted me to talk to Macon.
05:52And then, uh, my first question was, uh, do I do anything weird in the script?
05:57And he was like, no, I, I, I do the weird stuff.
06:00I got you.
06:00That's right.
06:01I got you.
06:01Yeah.
06:02I appreciate it.
06:02Shay's whole life.
06:03He's just trying to avoid being memed.
06:05Um, I got, I got a lot of memes coming for me after this.
06:09No.
06:09Yeah.
06:10Who do you think's the meme most?
06:12I mean, you might be, I don't know.
06:14Who's, who's going to be memed the most?
06:16Yeah.
06:16He's going to get, there's going to be tats of him.
06:18Yeah.
06:18Yeah.
06:19I hope so.
06:20Talk about your character.
06:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:23I got you.
06:24I got you.
06:25It was nice to break.
06:28Hey, Fran.
06:29Hi, how are ya?
06:30I play Pricka Bush, the were-whoop.
06:32Mm-hmm.
06:33Um, he's a rapper.
06:35He's, um, a scary sort of rapper.
06:38I think he wants to be scary.
06:42Um, he's, he looks insane.
06:45Um, he believes kind of that his alter ego is a werewolf.
06:49Uh, he, me, me and Peter Dinklage's character, Coco, who's my uncle.
06:54Um, we roll up to the group and sort of cause havoc later in the film.
07:00Um, but he's a fun guy to play.
07:04I love, is this a too much leg?
07:06No.
07:07Maybe not.
07:07It is a lot of socks, but that's okay.
07:09A lot of socks.
07:10Give him a little.
07:11A little skin.
07:12Hey.
07:12Are you wearing long jocks?
07:13I'm wearing long jocks, too.
07:15Damn!
07:15Whoa!
07:16Spoiler!
07:18It's really, it's the coldest day yet in Sundance so far, like, of this week, so.
07:22Oh, really?
07:22Yes.
07:23It's like 19.
07:24Warm, so everybody knows it's cold.
07:27Warm us all up.
07:27Warm us all up with a little, like, Pricka Bush wrap.
07:29Just warm, warm our souls.
07:30Let's just chill out.
07:32Dave, once again, Dave trying to interview me.
07:37In an interview.
07:38Dave wants you to catch fire the way he caught fire last year.
07:40Just trying to put it on someone else.
07:41Well, I'm saying he's where they handed off.
07:44Okay.
07:44Yeah, go.
07:45Go, go, the spotlight's yours.
07:48This is crazy.
07:48Um, what should we talk about?
07:52I, what I will ask you is, okay, like, let's say people who know your character from Zola.
07:58Yeah.
07:58Compare, like, absurdity level, whatever, like, kind of give for those people.
08:03This is like Derek from Zola on acid.
08:06Yeah.
08:06Oh, okay.
08:07Like, this is, well, this is maybe Derek having gone through some hard times and finding music, you know, as
08:14an outlet.
08:15Um.
08:16If you had to sing that kind of music, what would it stop?
08:19It'd be like, murder, murder, murder, murder, murder.
08:22Oh, my, my.
08:22All day.
08:24Murder, money, cash.
08:25Murder, money, cash.
08:26And he did it.
08:27And he did it.
08:27You always get to chop that out.
08:31Fabulous.
08:32There you go.
08:33Um, how did you get your accent?
08:35So.
08:36What was, what was your act?
08:38Tell me about your accent work.
08:39Yeah.
08:39I mean, it was in the script that she was Ukrainian.
08:42And I talked to Macon and I was like, do you want me to do a dialect?
08:45And he said, yeah, sure.
08:46Let's, let's go for it.
08:47So, luckily I had like a little bit of lead up time.
08:52And I worked with a dialect coach and I listened to a tape quite a bit.
08:57And, yeah, you know, it was so, like, I feel like there was not a lot of rules in this
09:06movie.
09:06Everybody got to play something that was so different from who they were and like also have a lot of
09:13fun with it.
09:15So, yeah, I just like prepped it hard before because I didn't want to be thinking about it.
09:21Did you have a phrase or a word or a sentence that like if you needed to get back into
09:25it?
09:26Um, I liked just saying her name, Irina.
09:28That like really like for some reason got, I don't know if it's because it's her name or because it's
09:33a nice sounding word in the Ukrainian dialect.
09:37But, but I did that a lot.
09:38And I would just kind of like be going over it as much as I could.
09:41But Kiernan came in day one and had this whole dance sequence that she choreographed herself.
09:48Did you?
09:49She was, yeah.
09:50Oh, I didn't know that.
09:51She was bleeding by the end of the day.
09:53Stripped around.
09:54She, and she was doing it all with this like very difficult to pull off accents and doing it flawlessly.
10:00Yeah.
10:00Fun time.
10:01What does anyone have, has anyone been on a memorable road trip themselves?
10:07I think I've ever been on a proper road trip.
10:10Yeah.
10:10I'm in a few high-sq tours.
10:12Mmm.
10:13No, no, no.
10:14Tell us about it.
10:15I was in third grade on the up and smoke tour.
10:16Yeah.
10:16Were you there willingly?
10:17Like were you like, this is fun?
10:18Or were you like, oh, I'm being dragged around.
10:20No, it was super cool.
10:21But like third graders should not be on the up and smoke tour.
10:25You know, that's, that's Drace and Warren G, my dad and Eminem.
10:29I saw some.
10:30Were you on the bus?
10:31Were you on a bus?
10:32Yeah.
10:32Yeah.
10:33Were you getting secondhand smoke at all?
10:34Um, I, I realized later on in life that, uh, probably my whole life.
10:41Yeah.
10:41Yeah.
10:42You know, I used to think that smell was overheated speakers cause there was always run music.
10:46Mmm.
10:46They're working hard.
10:48Yeah.
10:48And then I smelled it on the beach and I was like, there's no music out here.
10:52You know?
10:52Um, but yeah, I, I didn't see nothing too crazy except you can't control what the crowd does.
10:58And you know, just flashing here and there.
11:00Yeah.
11:00Eight, nine years old.
11:02And then, uh, yeah, it was just, uh, there is a footage on some MTV show where I am kicking
11:09my dad's ass in NBA 2K Sega Dreamcast about this gaming life.
11:15Mmm.
11:15Yeah.
11:15That's it.
11:16Road trips.
11:17I need leg rope.
11:18Can't be sitting in the car too much.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Need the bus.
11:21Um, if anyone else has a good, otherwise I will go to our final question before we run
11:25out of time.
11:26Let's do it.
11:26Which is, um, I'm asking everyone, what is, what did you buy yourself with your first,
11:32like Hollywood acting job paycheck?
11:34Oh my God.
11:35Like the first time you kind of could kind of get yourself something decent.
11:38I remember I bought my mom a big screen TV, but it was long enough ago that it was one
11:44of those like boxes that you like wheel in.
11:47And so I think it was a nice gesture at the time, but a piece of shit objectively.
11:53Yeah.
11:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:56I did my first film when I was 11 years old.
11:59Um, she's beat, she beat me.
12:01You did?
12:01Five years.
12:02She started as a six year old.
12:03That's true.
12:04Um.
12:04I loved your work in Sky High though.
12:07Sky High.
12:0816.
12:09One of my favorites.
12:10Oh, thank you.
12:11Yeah.
12:11It's amazing.
12:11Amazing work.
12:13Um, I, I was, I, I got paid, I guess I'll say I got paid $30,000 as an 11
12:21year old.
12:22Yeah.
12:22And I wanted to do this TV movie called Walter and Henry.
12:25I played Henry and we were shooting in Toronto.
12:29And at the time, electric scooters were not in the world.
12:33And there was like this amazing, there's this like spy shop and they had electric scooters.
12:38So I bought two, one for me and one for my mom who's with me in Toronto.
12:43And we would ride around town and be in our electric scooters.
12:46That didn't take up all the 30 K did it?
12:49That was 2 K.
12:50Yeah.
12:50You know, um, agent, manager, taxi.
12:5320%.
12:54I was broke by 12.
12:56Um.
12:56Tough.
12:57You sold those later for cash.
13:00What's that?
13:00But you had to sell them later for cash when you.
13:02Yeah.
13:03Oh, for sure.
13:04Yeah.
13:04Do you still have them?
13:05No, I think those batteries were bad, you know, at the time.
13:09They melted pretty quickly, I think.
13:11But.
13:12Yeah.
13:13I don't remember.
13:14It was probably the fair.
13:15Build a bear or something like that.
13:18But my mom probably bought me it and I just wanted to feel like I was, I was doing it.
13:22But yeah, starting at six, I don't really, I didn't really have like the, that like concept
13:27of like a paycheck wasn't in my brain yet, which I think was helpful.
13:31Yeah.
13:32That's fair.
13:33My career started while I was fresh out of college.
13:37And, um, so I bought at the time three $5,000, uh, Japanese Katanas.
13:46Oh, wow.
13:47I still have them to this day.
13:49I'm to six.
13:50Whoa.
13:51Yeah.
13:51By the way, I collect Katanas.
13:54Incredible.
13:55Thought you knew we, didn't you?
13:57What about you?
13:59Yeah.
14:00Um, mine was, um, a cop show called The Beat that got canceled before my episode aired.
14:07I played the pizza delivery guy in one episode.
14:10Hmm.
14:10I delivered a pizza to Mark Ruffalo.
14:12Oh.
14:13Um, and Jason Priestley was the director and I got my SAG card.
14:17Did you have a line?
14:18And I was like, yeah, I was, I was mad that he didn't tip me enough.
14:21And I gave him some, some attitude and I was like, we have my fucking foot in the door
14:25now, but the money went to living expenses.
14:27It was like rents and sandwiches.
14:29But, um, I thought I was on top of the world at that moment.
14:34So, whenever we talk about that, it's going to be like full time.
14:37Uh, usual we think he drinks.
14:37We're, yeah, due to life.
14:38Let us know.
14:38Keep your thoughts on and my comments you feel good.
14:39So, you see our social media check.
14:39So, okay now we're looking for news for today.
