00:00My Singing Monsters has been around for a long time.
00:032026 will mark its 14th year of being around,
00:05and in this video I'm going to be talking about what the game was like back in 2012.
00:09But first, thank you to my Cobra Clan for spending $2 a month to let me drink soda while I
00:14edit.
00:15You guys are the best.
00:16It seems a shame to talk about 2012 with all these crazy flashy graphics and the big green screen.
00:21How about we take this down a notch?
00:43Now, let's go back to 2012.
00:45July 2012 to be more specific, when My Singing Monsters' official YouTube channel was created.
00:50And on July 31st, we got our first video introducing the world to My Singing Monsters.
00:55This video is called My Singing Monsters Sneak Peek, and it has 2 million views.
01:00And I feel like this video does a great job of setting the tone for the year.
01:03It starts off on this quiet plant island with just one furcorn singing his song,
01:08and one by one the monsters just pop on and sing their own little tunes.
01:11And there you go, that's basically the whole video.
01:14And just a bit of fun trivia, the first comment on this video is from a user called ArcadeLife1,
01:19and he says,
01:31And I, I mean, he was right.
01:33The game does have in-app purchases, but it is quite free-to-play friendly, so...
01:37I don't know, that's a really interesting comment.
01:38And the initial comments are pretty positive, overall.
01:41We have people saying that the game looks really cool and unique,
01:43and then pretty quickly, once the game comes out, it's just people asking about combos, which is pretty funny.
01:48Players who saw that trailer had to wait about a month after watching it to actually play the game,
01:53because the game was released around August 20th of 2012,
01:57and the game looks nothing like it does today.
01:59Let me walk you through everything that was in the game.
02:01You had two islands, plant island, and cold island,
02:06all with only their common natural monsters.
02:09You had some decorations, you had likes,
02:12there was a feature where you could see a random person's island, but not your friend's islands.
02:16I don't have any footage online of people switching from plant island to cold island,
02:21probably because cold island was so expensive back in the day.
02:24But I believe you were able to swap by actually going into the shop and then clicking on the islands
02:29button.
02:29There was a settings menu with a couple of settings.
02:32There was the breeding mechanic, there was the nursery.
02:36I mean, that's basically it, guys.
02:37There was barely anything in the game.
02:39There wasn't a map.
02:40Were there friends?
02:41Was friends even a feature?
02:42The music on the login screen was completely different.
02:44It was actually what the Colosseum sounds like today.
02:49And this same track is used in the shop, instead of having the songs still play in the background.
02:54Something interesting is that if you go into the market, there are five tabs.
02:57You've got the monsters, decorations, structures, islands, and currency.
03:01But the picture for the islands tab already included air island, even though air island hadn't released yet.
03:06Also, there was this really strange faded picture in the background of the market that I can't really put my
03:11finger on.
03:12It's super weird because it looks like plant island, but phased into cold island.
03:16And then there's one of those statues that's like, and it's like pointing over there.
03:19I'm not sure.
03:20It's a really weird, strange background picture.
03:22And I'd love to see it without anything in front of it.
03:28The breeding structure wasn't even placed on the island until you reached level 7.
03:33And then you had to buy it for like 250 coins.
03:35The best footage from this version is from a channel called Touch Gameplay, who covered the game right after it
03:40released.
03:40They did this with a high quality screen recording, so we could see everything super well.
03:44Something interesting is that when this guy opens the friends menu, there's no sign of a friend code.
03:49So I'm not even sure if those were added yet.
03:50The bed system and the likes system were in the game already.
03:54There were five levels of castle.
03:56These castles were the basic castle, modest castle, comfortable castle, spacious castle, and luxurious castle.
04:02That's as high as you could get.
04:03There was no extravagant or paradise castle yet.
04:06Meaning that at most, you could have 40 beds per island, which is not a lot.
04:10That's only like 10 entbrats.
04:12The likes system has really been unchanged since the beginning of the game.
04:16Each monster has three likes and a mystery like, adding up to four likes.
04:20And the mystery like is never revealed in the game.
04:23You'd have to like look it up or place down decorations one by one, I guess.
04:26It sounds like a pain to find the secret likes, honestly.
04:29Actually, I wonder how they figured them out so quickly now.
04:32Is there somebody in the wiki who's actively getting the monsters really quickly and then
04:36testing them to see what their secret like is?
04:39Or are they finding this in the code?
04:40I don't know.
04:41Let me know in the comments.
04:41But yeah, that's basically what the game was like in its first ever public version.
04:45It does mention that there were beta versions that beta testers had been trying before the
04:49game was fully released.
04:50And if you know anything about this, I would love to hear it.
04:53We basically know nothing about what those beta versions were like.
04:56The first ever My Singing Monsters video not posted by My Singing Monsters that featured
05:01actual gameplay was posted by this touch gameplay dude.
05:05And we would not know nearly as much about the game in its early stages if it wasn't for
05:08this dude.
05:09So huge shout out.
05:10Something funny that the official channel posted like 10 days before the game even released
05:14was this behind the scenes video.
05:16It now has 21 million views.
05:19And I mean, you can really see why.
05:20This video is hilarious.
05:22But here's the thing.
05:22I thought this video was so real when I first watched it.
05:26But it is absolutely not real.
05:27It's actually hilarious to see it now.
05:29It's this behind the scenes video.
05:32But one of the first scenes is Dave Carr in a green suit with puffballs on it as if he's
05:36like guiding the animation for FWOG.
05:39Absolutely hilarious.
05:40You've got this chunky dude between like three microphones pretending to make 3D sounds
05:44for Maw.
05:45This is actually one of the animators of the game and he's literally just lip syncing.
05:48It's just hilarious because they're pretending that that's what 3D sound means.
05:52Of course, we now know that that's like if you're wearing headphones and there's a Deej
05:56on this side and a Tweedle on this side that you'll hear it that way.
06:00But it's not like that.
06:02It's just so funny.
06:03One of my favorite moments is whenever it's like soulful lyrics and then it's just like
06:07la la la la la la.
06:10It's just so goofy.
06:11Something that I hadn't really thought about is that basically the only phones around were
06:16way smaller than the ones we have now.
06:17Here's my phone case that I'm using for the phone I'm recording with right now.
06:20And here's an iPhone 4, which is what kids would have played with at the time.
06:24Like this is crazy.
06:25Anyways, that's pretty much it for August when it first released.
06:29Now in September, we got our first major update to the game.
06:32The game released as 1.0.0 and this major update was 1.0.2.
06:37Now there are some updates I'm skipping like 1.0.1, which just had a few bug fixes.
06:42They really weren't worth mentioning, but I'll cover the major ones.
06:44This update introduced Air Island and four new natural monsters.
06:48Pom Pom, Scups, Cybop, and Riff.
06:51I'm sure it was super exciting for these players who were just playing with two islands and now
06:56they have a third one.
06:57Like I can't imagine how exciting that must have been.
06:59Besides that, there were a few quality of life updates, which, you know, I'm a huge fan of.
07:04Now monsters grow when they are fed.
07:06Of course, we take this for granted, but this was not in the original version of the game.
07:09But now monsters do get bigger when you feed them.
07:12But yeah, that's basically it for this update.
07:14And really, that's it for September too.
07:15It was a pretty quiet month other than the fact that we got a huge update.
07:19October, on the other hand, was like way crazier.
07:21To start off with, My Singing Monsters officially announced their first event,
07:25which is called Monster Orchestra.
07:26This was their first version of Play Your Part, and it was done with Plant Island.
07:31They released a sample video to show what your video should look like,
07:34and I just love this video.
07:35This video features the voice actor of Entbrat, Eric Desjardins.
07:41I'm sorry if I'm saying that wrong.
07:42And he's just sitting in his room with his headphones on, making various monster sounds.
07:46When he gets to Entbrat, I mean, he absolutely destroys it.
07:55But the rest of them are just really goofy.
08:01And that was the video that people would mimic to make their entries for basically, play your
08:06part.
08:06It's really cool that they were doing community events even at the beginning of the game.
08:09On October 10th, we got version 1.0.3, which is by far the biggest update so far.
08:15We got Water Island, another brand new island added to the game,
08:19as well as two new natural monsters, Reedling and Shellbead.
08:22They made it to where the game would look better on the iPhone 5,
08:24which had a different screen size to the iPhone 4.
08:26Remember, back then they had not built in that code to make the game adapt to different screens.
08:31They added the size slider for decorations.
08:34They added the feature where you could go into a monster's like menu,
08:37click on a decoration it likes, and just place it instantly as a shortcut,
08:41and just buy it from there.
08:42And finally, you can now see your friends' islands.
08:45Before, all we could do was see random islands,
08:48but now you could literally click on your friend and go and see their islands.
08:52It's crazy to think that features like this weren't even possible before this update.
08:56Fun fact, I've checked on YouTube, there is no footage of Water Island, Air Island,
09:02or Earth Island anywhere in 2012, even though they were all three released in 2012.
09:07If you have footage from 2012 of your Air, Water, or Earth Island, I would love to see it.
09:12Next up in October, we got our first seasonal event.
09:16Yes, seasonals were introduced in the first year of My Singing Monsters.
09:20On October 23rd, we got update 1.0.4, which added the Spooktacle event and Punkleton.
09:25It changed the way Plant Island looked temporarily, and I believe it added some costumes as well,
09:30although they don't work the same way they do nowadays.
09:33These costumes were just baked onto the monster, you couldn't take them off or anything like that,
09:37and they would only last for the duration of Spooktacle.
09:40I don't think that there were seasonal decorations yet, I could be wrong,
09:44but there was, of course, the new seasonal monster, Punkleton.
09:47This is the first seasonal monster and the first non-natural monster added to the game.
09:52At the time, this was the most difficult monster to get in the game, which is pretty crazy to think
09:56about.
09:57In fact, the first ever breeding tutorial video was for Punkleton, and it was made by...
10:02Wuppet...
10:04Wuppetchenkska?
10:04I don't know.
10:05This dude still uploads today, but he doesn't make my singing monsters videos.
10:08Shoutout to him for making the first ever breeding tutorial.
10:11I mean, this has become a staple in the community.
10:14There are lots of breeding tutorials now.
10:16There was another thing added in this update, which is referral codes.
10:19I'm assuming this means friend codes were added with this update,
10:22because there was no sign of them before this, although I have no evidence to prove this.
10:26And yeah, that's pretty much it for October.
10:29It's probably the biggest month since the game's release.
10:31For November, we have one update, but it is a very big update.
10:35This was pretty late in November, as My Singing Monsters 1.1.0 was released on the 27th.
10:41It introduced two new islands, Earth and Gold Island,
10:45as well as Quarister, the final natural monster for now.
10:48Of course, Earth Island deserves its time in the limelight.
10:51It's one of the most popular islands.
10:52It sounds really cool.
10:54Plus, I mean, it's just a whole new island, so hooray, excitement.
10:57But we gotta talk about Gold Island.
10:58This is the first non-natural island, and the first one to have a unique mechanic.
11:03Instead of breeding the monsters, you were able to use the ones you already had
11:06by just leveling them up to level 15.
11:08This seems like a simple process, but if I'm not wrong,
11:11this would've been extremely difficult back in the day.
11:14Because of the limited beds, because of less castle upgrades,
11:16coin farming would've been very difficult,
11:19and so getting treats would've been difficult, because you got treats with coins.
11:22So to get a monster to level 15, let me look it up.
11:25Okay, so apparently it would've cost around 150,000 food to teleport a mammoth to Gold Island,
11:30which is like 1.5 million coins.
11:32So, yeah.
11:33Needless to say, this would've been quite a grind.
11:35But it was worth it, honestly.
11:37All of the natural monsters came together into this beautiful song.
11:41I can only imagine how hyped up this island would've been.
11:43Along with these islands, though, we did get another upgrade to the castle.
11:46This upgrade cost 20 diamonds, and it gave another 20 beds, for a total of 60 per island.
11:51So yeah, that definitely would've made a difference, and it probably helped get those coins they needed
11:55to get their monsters on Gold Island.
11:57I'm not sure how I missed this, but in all the promotional material for 1.1.0,
12:02there's also the scratch ticket.
12:03So, I think this was added here as well, even though it doesn't mention it on the wiki.
12:08The scratch ticket did not work like the one today.
12:10It actually gave away currencies instead of monster eggs,
12:13so it would've been one of the first ways to get currencies,
12:15other than just the normal ways, like monsters and diamond mites.
12:18So yeah, this is definitely something worth mentioning. Not sure how I missed it. Carry on.
12:22Also, it's worth mentioning that Season of Ye was technically added in this update,
12:27but it wasn't introduced until December.
12:29So since we're done with November, let's move on to December.
12:32On the 6th, Yule and Seasonal of Ye were released.
12:35This led to, of course, a second tutorial for Yule,
12:38and basically the only footage of Cold Island we have on YouTube.
12:42It is actually crazy how scarce footage is online of the other islands other than Plant Island.
12:47I'm telling you, if you have any footage, please bring it forward. I would love to see it.
12:51Season of Ye was the second seasonal event, and Yule was the second seasonal monster.
12:55So yeah, this was a really exciting time for the game.
12:58And speaking of an exciting time, on December 3rd, 2012,
13:01Monster Orchestra Plant Island was released.
13:04And it's so fun to watch, honestly.
13:06All these little kids with their headphones making the monster sounds.
13:10It's so cool.
13:11But it wasn't just kids. You had full grown adults playing.
13:14There was this band that released an entry that just looks crazy.
13:17Like this dark, creepy music video.
13:20It's amazing to see that My Singing Monsters already had a loving community in 2012.
13:24I wanted to talk about the in-game economy for a minute in 2012.
13:28Nowadays, you can get millions of coins a day, and like 30 to 50 diamonds a day as well.
13:33But back then, it would not have been as easy.
13:35It is worth mentioning that there was a different mine back in the day.
13:38Instead of just the mini mine, there was the mine.
13:41And it worked like a maximum mine, except you could put it on any island.
13:44These were handy, except at the peak of 2012, there were only 5 islands that could have this.
13:50So if each of these mines could produce 4 diamonds a day maximum,
13:53and there were 5 islands that had it, that's a maximum of 20 diamonds a day.
13:58There were no wubblins, no special strategies, there were referral codes.
14:02But honestly, other than that, there was no good way of getting diamonds.
14:05Coin production would have been pretty capped too, because there were only 40 beds.
14:09If you wanted to maximize, you would just get all quads, and you could only level them to level 15.
14:15At the end of the year, of course, they added the upgrade.
14:17So at the end of the year, you could have 15 quads per island, all leveled up to level 15.
14:23And that is how you could max out your game.
14:24I'm going to look this up, actually.
14:26If you were collecting from every single monster the moment it maximized,
14:29and you had all of them at maximum happiness, all quads, all maximum castles,
14:33so you could have 15 quads per island, you could get about 30 million coins a day.
14:38Which is nothing compared to the farms you can do nowadays.
14:41That does mean that Gold Island was fairly doable, but still.
14:45Like, that's maxed out everything, and that would take time.
14:47Especially with no diamonds to speed things up.
14:49But yeah, honestly, what a cool time to play My Singing Monsters in.
14:53I hope you enjoyed taking a look back at 2012 with me.
14:56If you want to see these for the rest of the years, subscribe.
14:58I'm planning on doing one of these for each year of My Singing Monsters.
15:01Thank you so much for watching, thanks again to the Cobra Clan for letting me drink soda while I edit,
15:04and I will see you guys in another video.
15:07Happy monstering!
