00:00Once embraced by world leaders, the ex-president of South Korea, Jung Sung-yul, now faces life in prison.
00:08He was sentenced this Thursday for his role in imposing martial law on the country in December of 2024.
00:15The court found Jung guilty of leading an insurrection, with a judge saying he'd damaged democracy in South Korea.
00:21He had earlier been found guilty on further charges of abuses of power, falsifying documents and obstructing justice.
00:29The state of martial law only lasted six hours, because the South Korean National Assembly quickly voted it down, and
00:37citizens flooded the streets in protest.
00:41Facing a huge public outcry, Jung was later impeached, removed from office and arrested,
00:47with prosecutors accusing him of conspiring with military leaders to take over the legislature and to detain his political enemies.
00:55Also sentenced was former Defense Minister Kim Yong-yoon, who received 30 years in prison for his role in the
01:03insurrection.
01:04Former Prime Minister Han Deok-su was convicted last month for his role in the affair and sentenced to 23
01:10years in prison.
01:12The ex-interior minister Lee Sang-min was sentenced to seven years.
01:16The disgraced president still has some supporters.
01:19Pro-yoon protesters cried out when the verdict was announced.
01:23Yoon escapes the death penalty, which prosecutors have been seeking.
01:27Analysts have been expecting this lighter sentence, as Yoon's attempted power grab didn't result in casualties.
01:34And execution remains rare in South Korea, which has not carried out the punishment since 1997.
