00:00What was seen at Bharat Mandapam, the rivalry between Sam Altman and Anthropik that led on to
00:07bad blood, it was caught on camera where both the AI czars refused to hold hands with each other.
00:12The bittersweet rivalry or rather the bitter rivalry that was seen at Bharat Mandapam
00:16where tech world's most ferocious rivalry was at play. Amode who used to work under Altman at
00:23OpenAI, the legendary OpenAI-Anthropic rivalry that was at play at Bharat Mandapam where there
00:28was an awkward moment and the rise of clenched fists, Sam Altman and Dario Amode who skipped
00:35the unity hand raise at Prime Minister Modi's group photo. As Prime Minister Modi looked on,
00:41the two rivals standing next to each other appeared uncomfortable at the Prime Minister's
00:45request along with other prominent leaders on stage. They seemed reluctant to join hands.
00:50Eventually, instead of making a show of unity, the two raised their fists, breaking the chain.
00:56Let me take this to Cyrus, joining us on the broadcast to get exact details of what unfolded
01:03at Bharat Mandapam, Cyrus.
01:08Well, clearly there is no love lost between these two gentlemen. Rivals on the field, yes,
01:13they've been working in the AI space for such a long time that when they got the opportunity
01:18to basically make friends, they didn't do that. But the thing is, you need to understand the
01:25histories of both these gentlemen. Back in 2019, when Sam Altman was CEO, he had a philosophy
01:32to develop AI in a rushed manner. I mean, he was creating these GPTs, the two, the threes,
01:38every one of them was being rushed. Now, Dario Amode, he was the VP of research over there at that
01:44time. And he had a very different philosophy. He had a more, let's say, a more cautious approach
01:50towards the development of AI, which Sam Altman didn't agree with. And that's why near the 2021,
01:56that period is when both of these split. And after that, they have been taking on each other
02:01on social media and Twitter, friendly banter, taking jives at each other. But the thing is,
02:06they are rivals on the AI field. And people need to understand, sometimes rivals don't get along,
02:12even when on the international stage. And I think that was a demonstration of the same.
02:17Both Dario and Sam Altman are creating frontier models for the world and competing on a global
02:24level. And I feel that their past history kind of came in between them. And it was a bit surprising
02:30that both of them were standing together in the first place. But yes, for the world, I think they
02:35wanted to make it clear that even on the international stage, they want to see rivals. And absolutely,
02:41there is no love lost between them. But the good thing is here that the more competition
02:46that we see in the AI space, the more opportunities and options there will be for Indian users and
02:51global users across. Because remember, more competition means that both these key players
02:57will keep developing models, will keep giving options to consumers. And I think this competition
03:02might go a longer way. And remember, there is another player, a key player in this picture,
03:08that is Google, which is already developing so many models. So yes, Sam and Dario, clearly not the best
03:15of friends. And now the world has seen how critical this whole competition is.
03:22Oh, yes, absolutely, Cyrus. And like you rightly said, this rivalry should have been factored in
03:26given the fact that they were standing right next to each other. But in that moment where
03:32they had to show unity, raising their fists is what they chose.
