00:00The luckiest people in the world are those with the most wrinkles. The oldest people in the world
00:05have lived the longest. That's what you want because it's a binary choice. You can die and
00:11stay young or you can live a long time and get craggy. Hi, I'm Jason Bateman. We are on set
00:17for
00:17my Hollywood Reporter cover shoot. That's why I'm all dolled up.
00:26Greatest indulgence I think is my Dodger tickets. I like to go to about 20 or 30 Dodger games
00:38a year and I like to sit in seats that are not cheap. My greatest pet peeve is when people
00:48aren't fully conscious that we're all sharing space together. You know like talking loud in a
00:56movie theater or banging your seat on a plane or whatever it is. It kind of sucks.
01:05My happy place is it's gonna sound really soft. It's at home with my daughters and my wife and I'll
01:15stop there at painting the idyllic picture because that usually means I'm in one room watching my
01:21thing. Daughter is in her room watching her thing. Other daughter watching her thing and wife is
01:26watching it. So we're but we're all in the same house. My favorite part of any production is kind
01:34of getting to know everybody on set. You know they're they're a group of people that you end up spending
01:42more time with than your family and you're also kind of making this chunk of fake life together
01:48and everybody's kind of like a little magician in their little areas and so getting to know the
01:54people and their skills it's kind of like it's cool meeting the team you know. A professional risk
02:01that I took that paid off. Well on Ozark they originally were not looking for a director. They were kind
02:10of
02:10thinking about let's get an actor and they were they're taking some big swings on some very fancy
02:16directors and I wasn't interested in just acting. I wanted to direct them all but happy to play the
02:23part too and so I had to really pitch myself as the as the director to folks that weren't looking
02:30for
02:30me to direct. They were looking at these big shots. I sat down and had to pitch them for a
02:35couple of hours
02:36about what I would do and talk them into it and I remember the the the look on their face
02:43was
02:44okay you you get how big this pile of rope is you're wanting us to tie around your neck are
02:49you
02:50you're comfortable with that it's a big risk you know don't clank it. I remember not backing off of
02:56that opportunity of responsibility and I'm glad I'm glad I did because through the incredible cast and
03:01crew that was around me we managed to hit a target pretty close to what I dreamed it would be.
03:13The best compliment I could get from a director would be that was just right no more you don't
03:20need to do any more than that I I see you I see what you're doing I can I can
03:25read your mind you
03:26know because that's I think that's what as a viewer for me that's what I'm always going for I'm always
03:31going for an actor where I've got to lean forward and try to read their mind as opposed to getting
03:36too much help from them about what the character's going through so that's why I like to watch all
03:42the stuff that I do to see how it comes across what the level is because I know the way
03:46it feels inside
03:47but it's a different entirely how it comes across on on camera depending on on what the lens is and
03:53the lighting is and blah blah blah so um getting getting that level just right for the director is
04:00is a is a great feeling the best part about getting older is that you get smarter every day
04:06and if you are lucky like we are in this business you get to use that uh intelligence and sort
04:15of
04:15emotional um growth and intelligence in your work and so uh it's it's a privilege to get older the
04:23luckiest people in the world are those with the most wrinkles the oldest people in the world
04:29they have lived the longest that's what you want because it's a binary choice you can die and stay
04:34young or you can live a long time and get craggy the films this year were stunning there's a long
04:42list
04:43of uh films I would have loved to have been a part of even even on the crew just watching
04:49some of these
04:50filmmakers do their thing um obviously you know PTA Josh Safdie are are remarkable what they do Joaquin
04:58Trier did an incredible job with sentimental value and but the film I had the most fun with this year
05:05I watched it three times in five days was weapons I think Zach Kregor it just did a just perfect
05:13job
05:13for me for my taste and obviously for his taste uh with that film that could have been something much
05:19simpler than than it ended up being I I don't think it needed to be as great as it was
05:25but through his
05:26taste um and that great cast and crew um they just it was a it was just a blast beginning
05:35to end uh in
05:36in real tasteful ways
