01:28My name is Koki, I'm from Japan
01:31And honestly, I was not aware of sustainability, which we will talk about today
01:37Until I came to Europe to study sports management
01:39Maybe because Japan is doing great
01:41Well, I'm joking
01:43But yeah, living, studying and I play football myself
01:47It struck me that our love for sports or games shouldn't come at the expenses of environment
01:56And today I'm happy to discuss, share opinions, ideas with the professionals
02:01And I'm looking forward to it

02:14First up is Kim Wilson, who is the Director of Sustainability for McLaren Racing
02:19And she's responsible for implementing and overseeing the team's environmental and social performance and strategy

03:15Okay, so we've got 30 minutes to discuss circular models in sport
03:18But before we do, maybe we can set the scene a little bit for our audience
03:22Who may not know what circular models is and how it really reflects sport
03:26Maybe Dan, we can start with you
03:28How would you kind of characterise what a circular model is
03:30And how does it relate to the sports industry?
03:34Okay, hello everybody
03:35So to kick things off
03:38Normally we talk about sort of circular and linear economies
03:41So linear is really use once, dispose and that's it
03:45So what we're trying to do is become more circular
03:48So to be more sustainable
03:49So if that's reusing, certainly in the context of sports
03:53If it's reusing equipment, looking at the embodied energy that goes into it
03:57And overall having a lower carbon footprint
04:00As well as the other inputs as well
04:03So just to clarify, what is the model that we're trying to get away from?
04:08We're trying to get away from use it, dispose of it, landfill or energy recovery
04:13What we want to do is to get to a place
04:16Like the utopia is where sporting equipment has its lifespan
04:20And then it can be repurposed and either used again or adapted
04:25So if you're looking at something like washing machines
04:29Where if you look at Ellen MacArthur and what they're trying to do
04:32It's trying to have a product where you can reuse the main components
04:36So they just keep on lasting forever, hopefully
04:41Kim, you've been at McLaren for about 18 months now more or less
04:44That's right, yeah
04:44Implementing their sustainability strategy
04:46And circularity is a big part of what you're doing
04:48Could you give the audience a little bit of a flavour of what you're trying to achieve
04:51In the circular model?
04:53Absolutely
04:54So for us, we are the constructor of Formula One cars
04:59And the Constructors' Championship
05:00And that's actually where about 36% of our carbon footprint comes from
05:05So it's such an important part of our strategy
05:08To be able to achieve net zero
05:10To be able to deliver that
05:12So when we're looking at circularity
05:14We're looking at the materials that we use
05:17The processes that we use
05:18To make our cars
05:20And then how do we make sure that they're kept in use for as long as possible
05:23Are they from sustainable sources?
05:26And then what do we do with them at the end of life?
05:29So that's really important
05:30And given that we are in motorsport
05:33It's all about rapid prototyping
05:35That's what we're good at
05:36We're good at innovation
05:37We're good at doing it fast
05:38We've got to think about what we're going to do
05:40To get that extra tenth of a second out on track
05:43And that's what we need to do
05:44In terms of sustainability and circularity
05:47So for us, it's super important
05:49That we have that data-led mindset
05:51We're following the science
05:53And we're understanding where our materials come from
05:55The data behind it
05:57So that we can then really pinpoint the areas
05:59To make the biggest difference
06:00And what are the kind of one or two major objectives
06:03That you've got around circular economy?
06:05Absolutely
06:06So for us, we have set ourselves a target
06:09Of researching and developing
06:11A fully circular Formula 1 car
06:13And in doing that
06:15We need to understand what's it made from
06:17And what the parts are
06:18So really important
06:19And that's why I'm looking at Dan now
06:21Is carbon fibre
06:22Is a really important aspect for us to look at
06:25But it's not just about our Formula 1 car
06:28It's also about the entertainment side
06:31And what we do around the events
06:33That we organise in our teams
06:36So again, looking at Roma
06:37Team kit
06:39Clothing, merchandising
06:41Is also a really important part
06:43Of our circularity agenda
06:46We'll come to you now, man
06:47Because sportswear is obviously
06:47A big part of this conversation
06:50And trying to figure out
06:51How we can dispose of sportswear
06:53And produce sportswear
06:54That is environmentally friendly
06:55Is a big issue for the industry generally
06:58How do you go about it with your organisation?
07:00How do you produce kit
07:01That is 100% recyclable?
07:02What's the process?
07:04Yeah, just a few figures
07:06Let's get in mind
07:08That the fashion industry
07:09Is the second most polluting in the world
07:11So when we want to clean the sports industry
07:14We need to clean the sportswear
07:17This is one of the key priorities
07:19And on the other side
07:20Almost all the sportswear
07:22Make more than 60,000 kilometres
07:25Before coming there
07:26So we created Circle
07:27To change this industry
07:29And we create products
07:30Made from circularity
07:32Meaning that we can recycle plastic bottles
07:35We can recycle tables, chairs
07:37To create the fibres
07:38Technical fibres
07:40Which is fully recyclable
07:42Or fully biodegradable
07:43So this is a big shift
07:45And everything is made in Europe as well
07:47To be also local
07:48And to get the best clean energy
07:50To make our clothes
07:53One of the interesting things is
07:54As consumers
07:56People are generally wanting to buy
07:59Products that are more sustainable
08:00But it's such a minefield
08:02To kind of figure out
08:03What is sustainable and what's not
08:04It's very difficult to
08:05To kind of grasp that as a consumer
08:08You know, what kind of advice
08:09Could you give to people in our audience
08:11Who want to buy sustainable sportswear
08:13You know, what should they be looking for?
08:15So what is important is
08:17I think people don't buy products
08:19Only because it's sustainable
08:20So for all our products
08:23At Cycle Sportswear
08:24We need to have a product
08:25Which is
08:25Which have the same
08:27Technicity
08:28Also
08:28Desirability
08:29Because people want to
08:31Appellate products
08:32And they want to look good as well
08:34And also
08:35Of course
08:35Circularity
08:36So this is very important
08:37And then we do a lot of

10:51And we were
10:52Really successful
10:53With the different
10:54Manufacturers
10:55And we've got

11:52Competitive advantage
11:53We know that
11:54There's pressure
11:54From the sporting
11:55Bodies
11:55And the customers
11:56And the athletes
11:57So I think
11:58There's certainly

12:02It's just applying

12:03To a sporting context
12:05And if I can just add
