00:30Good morning, everyone. A few people coming and joining. First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Stefano
00:37Bernabino. I'm an old friend of the Global Sport Week from the very beginning, founder and CEO of Sport Seeds,
00:45an agency working on innovation, content strategy, and production, working with international federation, events, media organization, and as well, collaborating
00:58and investing.
01:02I think many of you here are interesting, are investing yourself. Any investors in sports or sports tech in the
01:11room today? Please raise your hands. There we go. There we go. Anyone interested in...
01:28of champions, athletes, being involved in investment funds, in sports tech, and even further, in any new, innovative organizations, industries,
01:42developments.
01:43And that's the topic of today and this coming up panel, Athletes, Investors, Testimonials.
01:51Let me please introduce on stage our special lineup. He's a former professional rugby player. He played for Stade Français,
02:00Leicester Tigers, among the other clubs, 37 caps, with the French national team, consultant on television, and today co-founder
02:10of Team Pact Ventures.
02:11Please welcome Benjamin Kayser.
02:18And a few months away from the Rugby World Cup, the crowd is already hot. Hi Benjamin, please have a
02:25seat.
02:28He's co-president of Sport Tech, president and co-founder of the start-up Kobe. He's a serial investor who
02:37loves to be surrounded by sports superstars and champions on the boards of his start-up.
02:42Ladies and gentlemen, Sophia, Laurent.
02:50And last but not least, our usual young sport maker presence. We have a Kiwi. We are talking about rugby.
02:58We have a Kiwi, our very own Griffin Lilly.
03:04Thank you. Griffin, please take a seat. And here we go. Thank you, gentlemen. Thank you, the crowd, for being
03:15with us today. A very interesting topic here. Athletes, Investors.
03:18Let's start with you, Benjamin, or Benjamin, if you want the French way. When and how the will of investing
03:26in sport has started when you were a professional rugby player, knowing that this gentleman is an executive MBA at
03:33Oxford University, please.
03:36Bonjour, everybody. Thanks for having me. Look, I'll put it very simply. For me, entrepreneurs are the athletes of real
03:43life.
03:43I see a direct parallel between those two worlds. And so I've always been interested by entrepreneurship because of the
03:49entrepreneurs that I found absolutely fascinating.
03:52I believe that the gold of elite sports is the mental strength of elite performers in our capacities to create
03:59sustainably performing teams.
04:00And that will make the difference of winning from time to time or just being good to being absolutely world
04:05-class and building winning dynasties.
04:07And that parallel, I always wanted to bring it to every single team that I was part of.
04:12And investing in innovation is just bringing it to another different team and a team that can give access to
04:19sports, which I believe is a central part of my life for my health and my well-being overall.
04:24So it's got a positive impact on the world.
04:26So during my career, I was always trying to find opportunities to learn by investing in young startups, by bringing
04:34them what I could bring to the table.
04:36Then I went to do the MBA and I realized that there's a whole world called venture capital, which actually
04:41finances those entrepreneurs.
04:43And so I decided to go found Teampact Ventures and Impact VC funds to do so at a larger scale.
04:50We were talking earlier on about reconversion of athletes.
04:52We hear definitely a very interesting orientation.
04:56So, let's move on with you.
04:58And Teampact has been investing in your startup.
05:02But let's talk a bit about your investing career.
05:06Yes.
05:07Thank you.
05:08Hello, everybody.
05:09Yes, of course, since 2018, which created my first company with my brother, Adam.
05:18And we wanted to break the law of sports, helping people to practice sport without spending money.
05:26It was our vision.
05:27And I knew that, like Benjamin, if I want to be performant, I have to learn by a champion, entrepreneur,
05:39athlete to be better in my job.
05:42And that we do now.
05:44We work with Benjamin, with Teampact Ventures and other athletes.
05:49And now we are growing for helping people, companies, brands, for offers more sports for their clients, for their citizens
06:00or employees through our solution.
06:03And we have a lot of people that use already our solution in France today.
06:10We will talk more widely about Kobe, the specifics of how we can see it works because Sofiane is very
06:17fit.
06:17Not as fit as our very own Kiwi, Griffin.
06:21Griffin, you might be thrilled, you with your rugby background coming from New Zealand, to be among these combined worlds
06:29of sports, stars and legends, becoming investors and the investment world.
06:35Yeah, it's really, really exciting to see.
06:38I've always thought that athletes were perfectly posed after their careers and during as well to be investors.
06:45You know, throughout their careers, they gain significant amount of capital through a short period of time.
06:51They have connections all throughout the business industry and all throughout the sports industry as well.
06:57And they also have such niche expertise that certain companies can hugely, hugely benefit from.
07:03And so that combination just means that it's really exciting to obviously see that you two are collaborating together.
07:08And obviously, Benjamin, the expertise that you can provide to any company you invest into the future.
07:16Well, you'll realize he's a young sport maker, but he's a maker himself.
07:21He's running his own company in London on the social media environment.
07:25But let's get started in the heart of this very exciting topic.
07:29Benjamin, let's start from you and let's get a bit more of understanding of Impact Ventures, where it comes from,
07:37when and how you fund it, what is the activity today all about?
07:40And how many other professional athletes are involved in your fund?
07:44Right. So we want to position ourselves at the intersection of talent war, of the catalyzing power, the unique catalyzing
07:55power of sports and positive innovation on the world and people.
07:59We believe that world class leaders or world leaders in the future will be mission driven companies that have thriving
08:06human capital.
08:07We demand a positive impact on planet and people and we actually analyze their capacity there to solve the equation
08:14of talents, retain or attract, retain and grow the best talents.
08:19By attracting the best talent is the reason why we focus on climate tech and health tech.
08:23And I believe that that sports tech has got a very similar bridge to health by retaining the best talent
08:30is the reason why in our due diligence,
08:31we open up the car to actually have a look at the engine, to see what the people performance looks
08:38like.
08:38Will they have the people ability to go over and beyond what it takes to take the mission to the
08:43next level?
08:44And by growing the best talent is the reason why we bring the best practices of sports, elite mental strength
08:50from extraordinary performers for founders
08:54and best practices to build sustainably performing teams for managers.
08:58Yes, I like this expression, entrepreneurs are like professional athletes in which what counts the most is performance.
09:06Very interesting that today, the former athletes are not only investing in sports tech.
09:12We talked about health, we talked about the climate, we're going to be talking about even more.
09:16And looking at Kobe, Sofiane, you're going to tell us more about your startup.
09:23But to introduce it, we have a nice video.
10:34So that's Kobe, and you might have realized in the video,
10:39a world champion from the French national squad, Raphaël Varane, is part of that.
10:44So tell us about Kobe, and how the involvement of Raphaël, Al-Berjaman, and other professional athletes
10:51is going to be a successful chapter of this adventure.
10:55Yes, of course, we are really lucky to have Raphaël Varane, or Benjamin, and other athletes
11:03because, like we saw, it's people that have a good mindset.
11:11They can bring a lot of people with him to go to an ambition.
11:17and we realized we can bring people like Raphaël Varane in our project
11:24because they were from amateur sports, sports amateur, before to be professional.
11:31So they wanted to give to sports what they received before to be professional.
11:40So now we create a new story with them.
11:44I have a lot of anecdotes with Raphaël.
11:47It's people who send messages to our employees
11:53who said,
11:56I saw what you do, it's very cool, continue, follow your ambition,
12:02and I'm sure you will succeed.
12:05It's a really good motivation for the team.
12:10It's like you said, Benjamin, people, it's the earth of the winning to succeed in our ambition.
12:17So if I have people who are in a great mood, like we said, we can do a lot of
12:25things.
12:26So people like Raphaël, we have also Nedim Remedy in Humboldt, we have also Cyril Gann,
12:33we saw at the end of the video.
12:36It's people that help me to be in a good mindset.
12:41They teach me to be professional, to be, if I can manage better my weakness, my strengths,
12:52because it's not linear and it's very nice to work with them.
12:58Definitely, there is a performance factor,
13:01but as well as social, impactful background and message and reason for that.
13:09And we are here, we like to tagline our event,
13:14sport for tech, tech for good.
13:16So at the end, it's sport for good.
13:17I think it's also very important that there is an investment part,
13:20there's a performance, but there's also a message and the role and the legacy
13:28that the athletes want to bring into their investment.
13:31I have a sentence, a quote by Benjamin that I want to read him
13:34and I want to comment on it because I think it's very powerful.
13:38And it says, technology and the way this finance must generate a positive people first impact.
13:45Tell us more about it.
13:46Positive legacy behind us.
13:47And sport has got an absolutely phenomenally unique catalyzing power
13:51to create movement, to motivate, to lift the people's spirit, obviously.
13:55And if you could just direct this for positive innovation, for tech for good, for sports for good,
14:01I think it can be a tremendous dynamism that can be generated.
14:05So I am extremely honoured at Team Pack to be surrounded by athletes like Raphael Varane, like Cyril Gann,
14:12who genuinely want to have a positive impact.
14:15And they just so happened to understand and to realise that investing in positive innovation was a way of doing
14:21so.
14:21We didn't, who literally implode because you have to survive to entrepreneurship.
14:25It's a very, very hard job.
14:28It's a sprint slash marathon for a long, long time.
14:30It's co-founders who can't stand each other.
14:33It's an incapacity to retain talent or key talent over 18 months.
14:37And so like you said, surround yourself by guys who do this for a living at the best of the
14:42best levels.
14:44Resist pressure, filter the advice that matters, self-care and admit their doubts.
14:49So I believe that innovation has got a mission and that's what we're trying to do for Team Pack.
14:52Decisions and what we prioritise.
14:54And so it's really, really exciting to see that athletes are making a stand
14:58and they are choosing social good, not just for profit,
15:02but because it's a personal priority and it means something to them.
15:04I think when it comes out of your own personal priority
15:07and when it's something that you truly believe in,
15:09that is where the biggest impact makes
15:11and that's where the biggest innovations and changes can be seen in the world.
15:17So Fianna, I'd like to know, it's interesting, in your board you have different kind of investors.
15:24I have an entrepreneur in my board who will work processing businesses.
15:31It's different. With athletes, it's more performance, motivation, doing some communication also.
15:42It's a good capacity to grow our business also, so we do a campaign with them.
15:47It's really different, but I saw that like Benjamin, the former professional or an entrepreneur,
15:57it's like an athlete and they can do it if they learn a lot about us and we can do
16:04like us if we learn about them.
16:07So it's different, but it's the same in some kind of stuff.
16:13Benjamin, do you recognize yourself into the description?
16:16And I'm curious to know, how is your previous world, your ancient previous colleagues and teammates,
16:24how do they see at you today? Do you still have connection? Are they willing to rest in peace?
16:28And all these guys that were investing heavily in technology,
16:31so it created an appetite, a curiosity, a willing to discover things.
16:35I think the bridges between the world of sport and business have always existed obviously,
16:39but there's so much more relevance in innovation.
16:42Just purely in terms of the timeline that you have to generate a positive startup,
16:47it's probably what, 10 years, that's the time of a professional athlete career.
16:53The age of the population is normally some younger employees that are faced there, it's relatively similar.
16:58So extremely similar mindsets, extremely similar soft, dirty, but also realizing they've got something to bring.
17:05We're not only talking about capital, we're talking about bringing that mental strength of elite athletes
17:10to support founders who want to positively impact the world.
17:13So we've got loads of examples that I think are fascinating,
17:17and sometimes there's a bit of an imposter syndrome that needs to be broken.
17:20We need to realize that those soft skills are absolutely key.
17:25You can give me any strategy, it will be eaten for breakfast by culture and by motivation.
17:29In the other hall, I don't want you guys to leave the wrist mouth.
17:32It's a legitimacy that you cannot even question.
17:36When Rafael Varane will speak to Sofiane.
17:38They showcase that the athletes, the sport professionals, are actually people with the capacity to go beyond the standard ones.
17:50because to go under pressure, to live the experience they have.
17:53And it's actually offer a second chapter of their career that is amazing.
17:58Do you think we're only at the beginning of that phenomenon?
18:00Do you think there will be more and more of professional athletes having a second life chapter going into active
18:08world?
18:10It's extremely risky, yes, but it can have huge rewards too.
18:14So I think if we want to build a positive world, we need to start by innovation.
18:17It's one of the ways of doing it.
18:19And I cannot be professional or even amateur athletes,
18:23because those skills and qualities don't come necessarily only from professional athletes.
18:26Are you looking at any or do you already work with any of those profiles?
18:33Currently not on an individual level.
18:35We've done interviews in the past.
18:36But I think there's a really, really exciting space to be collaborating with athletes.
18:40I think that they have such an amazing story in terms of the adversity, in terms of people.
18:45To be able to share that perspective, especially with these huge events going on and how we're seeing.
18:49Time is quickly going on. The topic is definitely interesting.
18:54We have three minutes left. I would like to each of you to come up with your main takeaways,
18:58your main conclusion about this current world and the future of this world,
19:03where this will bring up with the sports investments and we athletes involvement.
19:09Let's start from Sofiane.
19:12Let's go. I'm really optimist.
19:16Because, like you said, Benjamin, we speak more easily.
19:20You can speak easily with them on LinkedIn.
19:24Six, seven years before, we don't talk with a professional athlete on LinkedIn.
19:29Now it's a new change.
19:31And we are in France.
19:33So for me, in my eyes of a sport tech, I saw a lot of change positive.
19:40We have more investment in our solution, French solution for sports.
19:46So I think we will launch a new era of sports for more practice, for more people in well-being.
19:57And I hope, too, in our...
20:01And startups just make so much sense.
20:02And I think what is so much more exciting is when we have someone like Benjamin on the stage who
20:07understands the nuances
20:09and understands the importance of talent and how you bring the experiences of an athlete to a startup
20:14and how you can provide a ton of value that is the game changing for these companies.
20:20Thank you, Griffin. Thank you for your energy all the time.
20:23And to finish it up, we mentioned it with the World Cup coming up shortly in France, in rugby.
20:29Benjamin, your conclusion, your outcome.
20:31First of all, we would like to thank you for being with us today.
20:33It's really a privilege to have your insight.
20:35But what would be your final words about athletes and investors?
20:41Well, I think we've got challenges ahead of us, all of us, and we've got to get on it pretty
20:47quick.
20:48And I think sports can lead the way.
20:50I think the solution will always be people-based, human-based.
20:53And if there's one area where we know how to thrive performance collectively as humans, it is sports.
20:59So let's get to work. There's a lot of work.
21:02But I think one step at a time, we can create a movement.
21:05And that's why I think sports tech and athletes have a literal, almost a moral responsibility to lead the way
21:12for positive change.
21:13And to finish it up, for all rugby fans, your favorite for the World Cup?
21:18Go France.
21:20Go France. Not a surprise. That was all for us.
21:23Thank you, Griffin, Sofiane and Benjamin. Thank you all.
21:28Thank you. Thank you.
