00:00In front of the Russian embassy in Berlin, several dozen people gathered in the cold
00:04to remember former opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
00:08He fought for freedom, for just open elections, open freedom of speech, freedom of actions.
00:19It's just a very important part of modern Russian history and he always will be.
00:26And inside of a Moscow cemetery, his mother laid flowers on his grave.
00:32Outside, she told reporters that she felt vindicated by the European statement released
00:37on Saturday, that it confirmed that he was murdered and that justice eventually could
00:43take place. Some of those present expressed lament.
00:49It's a feeling of bitterness, sorrow and a sense of a hopeless future.
00:54Faith in the future is lost.
00:57Others found optimism in the gathering.
01:05When I came to this place for the second time, hope suddenly appeared.
01:12If you recall the photos from 2024 and 2025 with kilometer-long lines to his grave
01:18and see the groups of people gathered around now, all of it inspires hope.
01:26And in Siberia, the vast region where Navalny died, Russian authorities blocked these people from
01:32laying flowers at a monument for victims of political repression on the anniversary of his death.
01:37According to the independent Russian media SodaVision, police were seen removing the flowers
01:42and warned that anyone who attempted to place them there could face terrorism charges.
