Sudan's RSF captures El-Fasher, sparking fears of mass killings

00:00These are some of the survivors of massacres carried out in Al-Fasher.

00:06Now sheltered in this camp nearby Tawhila, they share their stories.

00:11Al-Khayr Ismail was bringing food to his family trapped in Al-Fasher, where he and others

00:17were attacked by armed men.

00:21These people had collected 300 of us, civilians, travelers.

00:25They brought us to a reservoir.

00:27The people on camels and motorbikes gathered us and killed us there.

00:32Al-Khayr survived unlike his friends because he knew one of the gunmen.

00:39After that there was a young man I studied with in the university in Khartoum.

00:43He told them, don't kill him.

00:45After that they killed the rest of the people.

00:49Al-Fasher was the last stronghold of Sudan's military in Darfur.

00:54It was under siege for more than 500 days.

00:58There was fear that once the paramilitary rapid support forces seized the area, they would

01:05carry out ethnically based revenge killings.

01:09Fatima Abdul Rahim escaped with some of her children.

01:13We saw large numbers of dead people, as well as injured people and those with amputated

01:20legs.

01:21We hid behind barricades and moved cautiously between them, sometimes falling to the ground

01:27and disappearing into the streets and behind walls.

01:30For 10 minutes, we waited for the sounds of gunfire to subside and the shelling to lessen slightly

01:38before moving forward again.

01:41A study by Yale University shows that satellite images confirm widespread massacres.

01:49that are consistent with human bodies can be seen on the streets of Al-Fasher.

01:57Several videos also back reports of massacres.

02:00These images, geo-located to an Al-Fasher University building, show men wearing uniforms consistent

02:07with those worn by RSF fighters.

02:10While multiple dead bodies can be seen on the ground, according to residents, it was being

02:15used as a shelter.

02:18RSF have reacted to international condemnations by ordering investigations into violations.

02:25The militia claims to have arrested several of its fighters.

02:29The paramilitary group denies reports of massacres, saying they have been fabricated by its enemies.
