00:00 Coverage begins in Brussels.
00:01 Mathilde Vu is advocacy manager in Sudan for the Norwegian Refugee Council, the aid agency
00:08 that's present in many parts of Sudan.
00:12 What are your teams telling you at this hour?
00:16 Thanks for having me.
00:17 Well, I'm on the phone with the teams every day, and basically they're telling me stories
00:22 of desperation.
00:23 The situation is extremely dire.
00:28 In Khartoum, people remain stuck.
00:30 A lot of people are stuck in their home.
00:32 They're running out of water.
00:34 They're running out of food.
00:35 They're running out of cash to buy just basic necessity.
00:38 And not everybody can afford, almost the vast majority cannot afford, you know, a bus to
00:44 get out of the city up north to the border or just in the nearest town.
00:50 And then in Darfur, we've seen over this past three days an escalation of conflict.
00:56 It's been nonstop over this past three days.
00:59 We're basically fighting inside a city, affecting civilians.
01:03 I was just on a call with a colleague who just had his house completely burned down.
01:08 So this is to tell you how senseless this violence is.
01:13 Who burned down his house?
01:16 I think at this point it's very difficult to know.
01:19 What we all know is that these are men carrying weapons.
01:22 They're having a fight in the middle of the city with absolutely no regards for civilian
01:26 lives.
01:28 It's particularly alarming in Darfur, where witnesses say they see militiamen on motorbikes
01:37 and they don't know which group they belong to.
01:40 Yeah, well, honestly, as a civilian, I think trying to understand who is who at this point
01:47 may not be the first objective.
01:50 What they're trying to do is to find cover.
01:54 And that may not be possible for a lot of people.
01:56 I just want to remind you that in Darfur, you have, and especially in Jenina right now
02:00 when you have the conflict, you have 100,000 of internally displaced people.
02:06 These people do not have a house.
02:08 They live on the tents.
02:09 They have literally nowhere to hide.
02:11 So this is, I think, what their concern is.
02:15 Mathilde, very many thanks for that live update from Brussels.
02:20 Thank you for joining us.
