Changemaker for Ethical Journalism, Inclusive Education, Humanitarian Stewardship, and Compassionate Leadership (Philippines)

William Frederick S. Thio is a broadcast journalist, builder, and dedicated steward whose life embodies a profound commitment to integrity, service, and compassionate action. With over 15 years in Philippine media, he has informed and empowered the public through responsible reporting and anchoring on major national platforms, including the Philippine News Agency and as primetime English news anchor on IBC 13, following his tenure anchoring PTV News Tonight on PTV4. His journalism is marked by clarity, restraint, and a steadfast pursuit of truth, earning public trust and professional recognition in an era of complex national narratives.

Guided by early influences, his grandmother’s lessons in discipline and honor, and the humanitarian legacy of his great-aunt, the legendary Rosa Rosal (Ramon Magsaysay Awardee and Philippine Red Cross icon), William carries forward a tradition of empathy in action. He now hosts Agapay: Tatak Rosa Rosal, sustaining the pioneering spirit of Rosa’s Damayan program, translating faith and compassion into meaningful community engagement. His volunteer service with the Philippine Red Cross and moderation roles at Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation symposiums further amplify principled leadership across Asia.

Beyond media, William’s impact extends to tangible transformation. Deeply committed to children with developmental and learning disabilities, he led the renovation of a Special Education school using Universal Design principles, creating an inclusive hub that accommodates diverse sensory, cognitive, and mobility needs, turning aspiration into accessible architecture and lived inclusion.

In parallel, as a leader in construction and real estate, he stewards his family’s enterprise with reverence for heritage, restoring aging homes to preserve memory while thoughtfully adapting them for modern life, bridging generations through intentional care.

Mentorship forms a cornerstone of his work. He guides aspiring broadcasters and students, emphasizing that credibility is earned cumulatively, public voice carries weight, and leadership requires moral clarity. His enduring counsel, “Always choose kindness because we never really know what challenges people are going through”, is not mere advice but a lived standard across his endeavors.

00:00Good day, my name is William Theo, and before anything else, I'd like to express my heartfelt appreciation, and I
00:08am humbled in being chosen as one of the 2026 Icons of Change International Awardees.
00:16I am a journalist by profession, I work as a news anchor for the Philippine News Agency, or PNA, and
00:24the Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation, or IBC-13, which are both under the umbrella of the government's Integrated State Media, or
00:33ISM.
00:34Our main mandate is to bring stories that unite the nation, and in a developing country like ours, it is
00:42important that people unite under one common cause.
00:46One of the best things about my job that I really appreciate is that I learn something new every day,
00:53and with this knowledge, we can empower people so that they know the truth, because they deserve it.
01:00One of the greatest eye-openers for me as a person is the COVID-19 pandemic, because all of a
01:07sudden, all of the tried and tested formulas for survival did not apply anymore.
01:13We were sort of forced to press the reset button, and there were so many new important values that we
01:21had to stress on, like for example, health and healthcare, because it is important to have a healthy population.
01:28Because no matter what you do, you can have the best education, but without a healthy population, we will have
01:35no one to really educate.
01:38Because in the end, it is not recognition that sustains the world, but the courage to serve when no one
01:46else is watching.
01:47Thank you again very, very much, and I appreciate everything.
01:50Good day everyone.
01:51Good day everyone.
