00:55Hello, welcome to From the South. I am Irma Sholton from the Telesur studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:01We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:15In El Salvador, the families of those detained under the state of emergency imposed by the
01:22government of Nayib Bukele continue to protest. The families of the detainees mobilized in the
01:28historic center of San Salvador against the collective hearings. They also convene the fact
01:34that around 100 people who are being prosecuted and investigated were detained for not covering
01:41identification documents and not for any crime. Families also warn that many of them have been
01:49persecuted by the authorities without a court order.
02:01Over 100 communist and workers parties worldwide along with international organizations are condemning
02:09the U.S. imperialist offensive against Cuba and call for its end.
02:14The wall is mobilizing under the slogan, Cuba is not alone. A solidarity flotilla called
02:22Our America, aiming at to wreaking the military blockade imposed by Washington in the Caribbean,
02:28is being organized as well as demonstrations around the wall to reject the U.S. escalation against Cuba
02:35and to denounce it as a flower and violation of the international law.
02:40The statements and proclamations for this initiative state that the current offensive not only threatens
02:48Cuban sovereignty but also global peace and security. In this context, South African President
02:55Cyril Ramaphosa said his country could not consider itself free while Cuba and other peoples of the world
03:04suffer oppression. The assembly of the African Union approved a joint resolution rejecting the U.S. economy,
03:17commercial and financial blockade against Cuba. The international block demanded that Washington remove
03:24Cuba from the list of states that sponsored terrorism and the end of the fuel blockade imposed on the island.
03:32Section participants denounced the U.S. policy of aggression against the Cuban people for over six decades,
03:40and they restate their support and solidarity with Cuba as it resists interference and illegal measures
03:48adopted by Trump administration. African leaders press concern about the worsening negative effects of the
03:56the U.S. policy of aggression against Cuba and the U.S. policy of aggression against Cuba.
04:06In Ecuador, authorities found eight human heads inside sacks in the town of Puerto Bolivar,
04:14in the province of El Oro, amid growing violence in the country. According to the initial police investigation,
04:21the incident would correspond to a clash between organized crime groups
04:26disputing territorial control in the area.
04:30Alongside their remains, the police found pamphlets with the message,
04:36Robin Prohibit, presuming it is an intimidatory warning between criminal guns.
04:43The preliminary report details that the victims are men still unidentified.
04:49This incident is part of the serious security crisis that Ecuador is experiencing,
04:56which in 2025 record a hysteric high with more than 9,200 violent deaths,
05:06an escalation that the government has not been able to stop.
05:16A passenger boat tanked in the Amazon River, Brazil,
05:22leaving a tragic toll of two people, dead and seven missing.
05:26The boat tanked shortly after leaving the port,
05:30and among the fatalities were a three-year-old girl and a 22-year-old woman.
05:36Firefighters risked 71 people alive,
05:39while authorities continued to investigate the causes of the accident.
05:44A survivor reported that the boat was traveling at high speed,
05:49and the captain attempted to overtake another boat
05:53when a sudden wave flooded the vessel.
06:14We move on to other topics.
06:17In Paraguay, heavy rains battered the metropolitan area causing flooding,
06:22falling trips, and structural damage.
06:25The meteorological service record up to 100 millimeters of rain
06:30in less than three hours in Asuncion,
06:33an event that swept the streets of the capital and its surroundings.
06:39Experts point out that this volume of precipitation in short periods is unusual,
06:45putting pressure on the city's drainage and infrastructure.
06:50In addition, emergency teams are working to clear the roads
06:55while urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.
07:04In Mozambique, authorities have reported
07:07at least four people dead following Cyclone Jisani.
07:11With winds of up to 215 kilometers per hour,
07:17the storm caused severe damage in Inhaban,
07:20the largest and most vulnerable city towns of the country.
07:25Some 100,000 people have been left without electricity.
07:32Also, there are reports of at least 40 deaths in Madagascar,
07:36where the storm caused widespread destruction in Tomasina,
07:42the island's second largest city with a population of 400,000.
07:52And now we have a short break coming up.

08:03We'll be right back. Stay with us.
08:21Welcome back to From the South.
08:24The Chinese government has announced
08:26it will waive import tariffs on 53 African countries,
08:32with which it entered diplomatic relations.
08:36Chinese President Xi Jinping said that starting May 1st,
08:41African countries could be exempted from paying import tariff.
08:46He said the decision stemmed from China's commitment
08:50to safeguarding world peace, promoting common development,
08:54and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
08:58President Xi also praised Africa's progress in integration
09:04and regional development.
09:30The Israeli regime approved a plan to advance
09:34the contra-regulation and registration of occupied lands in the West Bank.
09:40The measure taken by Zionism has alerted the United Nations
09:45as it had not been implemented since 1977,
09:49emphasizing that this could lead to more forced displacement
09:53on the Palestinian population.
09:55According to the plan, the land will be sold or allocated
10:01to Israeli settlers or the army,
10:04with the goal of colonizing 15% of the territory by 2030.
10:10Experts warn that Tel Aviv has ignored all international warnings
10:15about the implementations of these plans,
10:18which seek to control the Palestinian region.
10:28Meanwhile, the Palestinian health actors denounces
10:31that dozens of health care workers have been held in Israeli prisons
10:36since the beginning of the genocidal attacks in 2023.
10:41The Director General of Gaza Hospitals, Mohamed Saoud,
10:46condemned the illegal arrest carried out within health hunters
10:50where their only crime was to remain at their workplace,
10:55fulfilling their humanitarian duty.
10:58The health officials wish human rights institutions
11:01and the international community to intervene
11:04to secure the release of those detained
11:07as they are also being subjected to pressure and insults,
11:12and some of them are reporting serious injuries.
11:16He warned that the arrest of medical personnel
11:19is exacerbating the health crisis in the territory
11:23and therefore demands the release
11:26and guaranteed protection in accordance with the law.
11:35Also in the Gaza Strip, economic collapse is deepening.
11:41The arrest's domestic product has fallen by more than 83%
11:45as a result of a widespread destruction caused by Israeli forces.
11:51According to reports,
11:53the reconstruction of the coastal relief is estimated
11:57at over 70 billion U.S. dollars,
12:00but that doesn't take into account indirect damages
12:05such as the loss of human capital
12:07and the immigration of skilled workers.
12:10Experts have called on the international community
12:14to pressure Israel to allow the reopening of border crossings
12:19and the entry of raw materials and construction materials
12:24but have also denounced Israeli restrictions
12:27which hinder any attempt at recovery of the Gaza Strip economy.
12:38In Norway, the government says
12:41Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
12:44would be arrested if he were to enter the country
12:48reaffirming Norway's commitment to international justice.
12:53Norway's foreign minister said
12:54the country abides by the Iran statute
12:58and the international justice system
13:00regarding violations committed by Benjamin Netanyahu's administration
13:05in Gaza and the West Bank.
13:07Social action would be in agreement
13:10with the International Court of Justice
13:14ordered by the arrest of the Israeli Prime Minister
13:17on war crimes charges.
13:18Meanwhile, the United States,
13:21one of Israel's main allies,
13:24has sanctioned four of the international judges
13:27in retaliation for their ruling
13:31and the investigation against Tel Aviv.
13:39In southern Lebanon,
13:41the Israeli army has carried out
13:44a series of attacks against residential areas.
13:47On Saturday,
13:49Israeli fighters jet bombed the outskirts
13:53of the town of Bezlaia and Melek.
13:57Moreover, troops raid other areas
14:00like Al-Jabur and Haspaya
14:03as part of their expansion strategy
14:06to occupy new territories.
14:08Israeli forces continue to bomb civilians
14:12in regions near the border.
14:14In the scenario,
14:16an Israeli unnamed aircraft
14:18launched explosive charges
14:20against a house
14:21in the Al-Qasir neighborhood
14:23in the border town
14:25of Mez al-Jabal,
14:27next to occupy Palestine.
14:39The Swiss government confirmed
14:41that negotiations
14:42between the United States
14:44and Iran
14:45will take place next week
14:46in Geneva,
14:48mediated by Oman.
14:49The foreign ministry's spokesperson
14:52detailed that the European country
14:54is prepared to facilitate
14:56the second round of dialogue
14:58between the two nations.
15:00According to military sources,
15:03the talks between Washington and Tehran
15:05will take place on February 18,
15:08focusing on the nuclear program.
15:11In this context,
15:12Iranian foreign minister Abbas Arashi
15:14described the first round of negotiation
15:18as a good start between the parties.
15:27And we have a second short break coming up.

16:13Welcome back to From the South.
16:16U.S. Secretary of State
16:18Marco Rubio
16:19delivered a speech
16:20at the Munich Security Conference
16:22that has sparked
16:23a wave of reactions
16:25due to his explicit defense
16:27of Western colonialism.
16:30Before an audience
16:31of European leaders,
16:33Rubio pointed to the processes
16:35of decolonization
16:37after World War II
16:39and the communist revolutions
16:41as signs of the weakening
16:44of the Western dominant systems
16:46and invite Europe
16:48to join President Trump's project
16:50to restore its influence.
16:54These statements quickly generate responses
16:57with international analysts
16:59interpreting the speech
17:01as a declaration of war
17:03against multipolarity
17:05and a direct challenge
17:07to the principles
17:08of sovereign equality
17:09among nations.
17:10the standing ovation
17:12that he received
17:14from the European representative
17:16has been particularly questioned
17:19as many interpret
17:21it as a sign
17:22of alignment
17:24with a vision
17:25that they legitimize
17:27the decolonization processes
17:29that transform
17:30the political map
17:32of the 20th century.
17:41International reactions
17:42were not long in coming.
17:45Former Indian foreign minister
17:47Kawal Sibab
17:48wrote on his social media accounts,
17:51this is, in fact,
17:53a declaration of war
17:54against everything
17:56that is not Western.
17:57What Rubio is saying
17:59is that the world
18:00must urgent issues
18:02will be identified
18:03by the United States.
18:05The United States
18:06will use its power
18:08to deal with them
18:10and the results
18:11will be determined
18:12by the national interests
18:14of the United States.
18:16Very disturbing
18:17for the future.
18:20U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen
18:22said,
18:23the standing ovation
18:25Rubio received
18:26in Munich
18:27after declaring
18:28the end
18:29of the rules-based order
18:31shows how weak
18:33many European leaders
18:35have become.
18:36Rather than defending
18:38universal human rights,
18:40they bowed
18:41to his siren
18:42son of blood and soil.
18:46Along the same lines,
18:48Glenn Dissen,
18:49professor of geoconomics,
18:51states,
18:53Marco Rubio
18:54describes decolonization
18:56as a sinister
18:58communist conspiracy
18:59that destroyed
19:01500 years
19:02of Western empires.
19:04Rather than adapting
19:05to multipolarity,
19:08Rubio hints
19:09at the restoration
19:10of the empire
19:11and invites
19:12the European vassals
19:13of the United States
19:15to join him.
19:16This is interpreted
19:18as a declaration
19:19of war
19:20against multipolarity
19:22and sovereign equality.
19:31In Italy,
19:33investigations
19:33are on their way
19:35into the recent acts
19:36of sabotage
19:37against railway lines
19:40in the east
19:41of the country.
19:42The inquiry
19:43was launched
19:44after reports
19:45of disruption
19:46to rail service
19:48on the Bologna
19:49and the Pesaro lines.
19:51Social actions
19:53have been labeled
19:54as terrorism
19:56and an attack
19:57against Italy's
19:59public transport.
20:00Amid the ongoing investigation,
20:02police have reinforced
20:04surveillance
20:05and controls
20:06to apprehend
20:08the perpetrators
20:09and they urge residents
20:12to remain calm
20:13and report
20:14any suspicious activity.
20:37in other topics,
20:39Vietnam prepares
20:40for the arrival
20:41of the Lunar New Year,
20:44a celebration
20:45full of traditions
20:46and hope.
20:48Thousands of people
20:49fill the streets
20:50of the historic center
20:52of Hanoi,
20:53the capital,
20:54to buy beach blossoms
20:55and kunkwak,
20:57trees,
20:58as symbols
20:59of good luck.
21:00The festivity
21:01is celebrated
21:02in every corner
21:03of the country,
21:04giving families
21:05the opportunity
21:06to gather
21:07and renew
21:08their social ties.
21:10This celebration
21:10brings,
21:11with the hope,
21:13a group of overcoming
21:14economic challenges
21:15and consolidating
21:17a path
21:17to recovery
21:18for the territory.
21:37and carnival celebrations
21:39continue in Venezuela
21:41as citizens
21:41go to different parks
21:43and locations
21:44to enjoy
21:45and family.
21:46from Caracas,
21:47our correspondent
21:48Brian Meir
21:49tell us more details.
21:53Carnival is underway
21:54in Venezuela,
21:56all around the world
21:57where carnival is celebrated
21:59and here in Caracas.
22:01Now,
22:01although some towns
22:02in Venezuela
22:03have big street parades,
22:04Caracas is more,
22:05its carnival vibe
22:07is more of people
22:09going out with their families
22:10and enjoying the parks
22:11during the daytime
22:12and then they have
22:12some carnival parties
22:13at night.
22:14So,
22:15I'm in Hugo Chavez Park
22:16in Caracas
22:17and it's just full of kids.
22:19Kids are enjoying themselves.
22:20They've got sprinklers,
22:21a pool,
22:22trampolines out,
22:23families are picnicking
22:24and they're just enjoying
22:26the time off
22:26and this extended holiday
22:28that will go on
22:29until Ash Wednesday.
22:31Meanwhile,
22:32you can see signs
22:33that the economy
22:34is doing better,
22:34definitely better
22:35than the first time
22:36I came to Venezuela
22:37in the year 2020.
22:39there have been
22:4019 consecutive quarters
22:42of growth.
22:43You can see that
22:44in the way people
22:45are spending money
22:46when they go out
22:47in public
22:47and also I sense
22:49a difference
22:49in the way
22:51that people are
22:51more relaxed now
22:52because the crime rate
22:53has also hit
22:54historic lows
22:55in Venezuela
22:57in 2025.
22:58So,
22:58it's Carnival Sunday
22:59here in Caracas.
23:00Kids are out playing,
23:02people are having fun
23:02with their families.
23:05In Venezuela,
23:07in the Guyana
23:07Ezequiva State,
23:09a record 11,000 tourists
23:11are expected
23:12for the Carnival.
23:13State Governor
23:14Neil Vila-Missar
23:16recalled the 8,000 record
23:18in 2015.
23:20He noted
23:21that the 18 educational
23:23institutions
23:24joined in a school parade
23:26kicking off
23:27the festivities.
23:29Governor Vila-Missar
23:30emphasized the importance
23:31of keeping regional
23:33traditions alive,
23:34stressing the premise
23:36that peace represents
23:38the greatest victory
23:39for all citizens.
23:46Meanwhile,
23:47in Colombia,
23:48about 130 folkloric groups
23:50parade in the
23:51Grand Traditional Parade
23:53as part of
23:54the Carnival festivities.
23:55The second day
23:57of the Barranquilla Carnival
23:58continues with
23:59the Paloteo Dance,
24:01a traditional folkloric
24:03expression noted
24:04for its roots
24:06in Hispanic-indigenous
24:07mixture.
24:08During their performance
24:10at the Cubiodromo
24:12of Forty Streets,
24:15the dancers
24:15struck wooden sticks
24:17to the beat
24:19of the music.
24:20The Paloteo Dance
24:22is a representation
24:23of the Battles of Independence,
24:26wars between Moors
24:27and Christians,
24:29and conflicts
24:30between nations.
24:36Millions of Brazilians
24:38and foreigners
24:39enjoy the activities
24:41of the Sao Paulo Carnival.
24:43The Sunday tourists
24:44and locals
24:45took to the streets
24:47to enjoy
24:48and accompany
24:49the parades
24:51and processing
24:52with traditional
24:53samba music.
24:54At the same time,
24:55young people
24:56in the communities
24:57gather on the avenues
24:58to have fun
25:00with waterhorses
25:02given the high temperatures.
25:04It is suspected
25:05that in the next few hours,
25:07the parades
25:08will begin their routes
25:10with a massive following.
