00:10In Paraguay, citizens are protesting outside the National Congress headquarters in Asuncion,
00:16demanding justice for families affected by the Bueno Bank scandal involving President Santiago Peña.
00:26Uruguay is ready to welcome Pope Leo XIV as the pontiff begins his first diplomatic and pastoral tour across South
00:33America.
00:38Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez strongly retracted new US economic sanctions targeting the island's electronics, manufacturing and maritime sectors.
00:54Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:59We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:15In Paraguay, members of unions and social and student organizations are protesting outside the National Congress headquarters in Asuncion amid
01:24the impeachment proceedings against President Santiago Peña.
01:27The victims of the Bueno Bank fraud are demanding that Congress proceed with the impeachment trial against resigning Peña in
01:35connection with the scandal that has locked nearly 3 million depositors, almost half of Paraguay's population, out of their savings.
01:43In this context, demonstrators have vowed to remain in the streets and squares until there is justice for those affected
01:50by the corruption scheme.
01:52Let's recall that Paraguayan President Santiago Peña tendered his resignation on Thursday, but minutes later, the Chamber of Deputies unanimously
02:01voted to impeach him in an attempt to prevent him from taking up a lifetime Senate seat with immunity from
02:08prosecution once he leaves office.
02:19We are calling on the general public, and in particular, all those affected by this widespread scam.
02:27More than 3 million Paraguayans have been affected by this scam perpetrated by a public entity, which is why we
02:34are calling on all citizens to join us here in Congress to demand that those responsible face the consequences for
02:40defrauding citizens, especially workers.
02:46And this is a reality that has been hitting us hard, a reality where you see desperate families selling their
02:54belongings, selling things from their home, selling their chickens, selling everything they have just to be able to afford even
03:00motherly decent health care.
03:02So this is a mockery. They meddle with people's money, with people's health, and with their very survival, because there
03:08are people who don't even have enough to eat.
03:11So I believe we need to be mindful enough to be here today and fight for the rights of those
03:15who have been wronged, because all of us here have been affected in some way by this situation.
03:25Investigators in Paraguay warned the public about possible scams involving the return of savings following the closure of Ueno banks.
03:31The Cybercrime Investigation Department highlighted that several scam attempts have been uncovered involving text messages and fake links that attempt
03:40to impersonate the central bank in order to steal banking information.
03:44They also emphasized that the only official link maintained by the National Bank is for informational purposes only, noting that
03:52users should not enter passwords or sensitive information.
03:55A study has urged the affected public to use only official channels to avoid falling victims to scams.
04:29The Gospel of the United States
04:30Publio 14th departed Rome on Friday morning to begin a 12-day apostolic tour across Latin America, landing first in
04:37Montevideo, Uruguay.
04:39After a 30-hour flight, the pontiff is expected to be welcomed by President Yaman Duorsi at Independence Square,
04:45before meeting civil authorities and diplomatic leaders.
04:48The first day will also feature a solemn liturgy at the Metropolitan Cathedral.
04:54The 12-day journey marks the second papal visit to Uruguay in history,
04:59continuing onward to Argentina and Peru to engage with regional communities
05:03and social sectors, focusing on strengthening regional ties.
05:15And Pau Pileo XIV arrives in South America for the first time on a 12-day tour
05:20that will cover cities in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6th to November 17th.
05:26To discover more of the details of this apostolic visit, let's listen to the following material.
05:34The first stop of this great itinerary is Uruguay from November 6th to 8th,
05:39where the pontiff is visiting Montevideo, Paisandu and Florida cities
05:43to meet closely with the local community, walk through the social races of the Casabaglia neighborhood
05:49and celebrate the Eucharist at the co-national sanctuary of La Virgen de los 33.
05:54Guided by the motto, I announce to you a great joy,
05:57which invites a festive gathering among the Uruguayan people.
06:01That same spirit of shared joy paves the way for the second stop, Argentina,
06:06home country of former Pope Francis, where Leo XIV will arrive on November 8th and stay until November 11th.
06:13visiting Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján, marking the return of a pontiff to Argentine soil
06:19after almost four decades. This visit will revolve around the motto,
06:24welcome everyone, go and announce, embodying in every institutional and community gathering
06:31an open invitation to diversity and shared responsibility as missionary disciples on a path.
06:37In that community journey through the Southern Cone,
06:40the trip continues to the country where Leo XIV left a deep mark as a John Agustinian missionary
06:46and bishop of Chiclayo, and that is Peru, the longest stage of the tour, taking place from November 11th to
06:5417th,
06:55across a route that will include Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucalpa.
07:01The visit will be held under the motto, let us open our hearts, a spiritual call to renew faith,
07:08build fraternity and welcome peace guided by the testimony of Peruvian saints and the living presence
07:14of the Holy Spirit, those closing this historic 12-day journey across the continent.
07:30Uruguay is the least religious country in Latin America and today it will welcome
07:35Pope Leo XIV, the second pope to set foot on its soil. How do secularism and religion
07:41coexist in this small country of three million people? Let's see.
07:49Uruguay is preparing for a Papal visit after 38 years. The last visit was by John Paul II in 1988,
07:57but the country that will welcome Leon XIV is very different from any other in the region,
08:03as here the separation of church and state is part of the national identity.
08:11This is a country with a clearly secular foundation and that secularism, the process of secularism and
08:16the subsequent secularization of Uruguay began in the late 19th century and was concentrated mainly
08:22in the early decades of the 20th century, involving a number of state measures and its particularly
08:28problematic relationship with the Catholic Church. Secularization began in 1861 when cemeteries were
08:39transferred to state control. Religious education was then abolished in state schools and the 1918
08:46constitution definitively separates church and state. More than a century later, the figures confirmed
08:53this trend. According to the latest Latino barometer survey, 52 percent of Uruguayans say they have
08:59no religion. This is the highest figure since the survey began and the first time it has exceeded half.
09:08We have a high percentage of atheists and agnostics. It is much higher than what one would find in Latin
09:14America. In that sense, it is a rare country. That is to say, we are an anomaly in a country
09:19so deeply rooted
09:20in Catholicism and now also in neo-petencostalism and new forms of evangelicalism and others,
09:28all of which are clearly present in Uruguay, new spiritualities and so on. But let us say that
09:35this secularism not only means that the number of atheists and agnostics is high, but also that
09:41those who believe do so in a different way. This secular country will welcome Paul Leo for
09:48theme and will be the first stop on his South American tour. The Uruguayans say they are pleased
09:54by this development but defend the country's secularism above all else.
10:00It's wonderful that there is secularism in Uruguay. It doesn't mean that one has to belong to one
10:07religion and that all others are banned. Rather, the idea of secularism in Uruguay is that all religions
10:14should have. Everyone has access to what their philosophical and spiritual beliefs dictate.
10:20So it's great that the Pope is coming for Christians and for Catholics. It's a wonderful thing and
10:26something that makes a lot of people happy. Everyone is free to think as they wish. Believing in God is
10:36a
10:36beautiful thing and I believe it makes us better people without offending the beliefs of others.
10:44It's very good because everyone should have their own opinion. Everyone should have their own
10:49convictions, of course. A recent poll shows that eight of ten Uruguayans are aware of the visit and
10:58almost six of ten consider it important. Although 58 percent would approve of the Pope's visiting
11:03parliament. One in four is opposed. This country of contrast and strong secular tradition will welcome
11:10Leon XIV on the first stop of his tour of South America.
11:24And now we have a short break coming up. First remember you can join us on TikTok

11:34We'll be right back so stay with us.
11:56Welcome back to From the South and let's go to Cuba as Foreign Minister Bruno RodrÃguez expressed on his social
12:02media,
12:02his rejection of new U.S. sanctions that worsened the blockade against the Caribbean nation.
12:08The official stated that the U.S. government instead of listening to its citizens is announcing new
12:13blockade measures against Cuba in its stubborn determination to stifle the economy and inflict as
12:20much harm as possible on our people. They will continue to fail in their attempts to subject us to their
12:26will
12:26and will continue to come up against our effective defense of our independence and sovereignty.
12:32Cuba is not a threat, the blockade is.
12:46Cuban Foreign Minister's statements came amid the announcement of new U.S. economic sanctions against
12:51the island, this time targeting the electronics manufacturing, maritime and technology sectors
12:56as well as foreign individuals involved in these industries in Cuba. U.S. Secretary of State,
13:02Marco Rubio announced a new round of coercive measures which targets eight entities and two
13:08individuals linked toward crude oil shipping network. Cuban state-owned enterprises and China-based
13:14suppliers to Cuba's military. This latest political move against Cuba comes in the wake of the Republican
13:20party setback in the November 3rd midterm elections.
13:33In other informations, in Grenada, the National Democratic Congress, NDC, led by Prime Minister Dickon
13:39Mitchell, won the 2026 general elections. Mitchell has retained power for a second consecutive term
13:45following an electoral contest against the opposition new national party. In this scenario,
13:50Mitchell's NDC secured 14 of the country's 15 parliamentary seats. This victory gives Mitchell a renewed mandate
13:58to pursue his administration's priorities, including economic development infrastructure,
14:03health care, education and employment. This is your victory. This is your making of history. This is your
14:16belief in yourself. Because as Grenadians, we know what we want. We know what we deserve. And we know where
14:26we should be going and what type of future we want to create for ourselves. So when we framed the
14:35campaign,
14:35you, me, us, it is because we know that without us, there is no Grenada. Grenada is about its people,
14:45not its things. And our job is to educate, uplift, nurture, support and protect our people at all costs.
14:55And I can assure you, as the political leader of the National Democratic Congress, that you have our
15:01commitment to make sure that over the next five years, we continue to put you, the people of PT
15:09Martinique, Karikou and Grenada first. We are not about no gimmicks. We are not pretending.
15:20We are authentic. We are authentic. We are real.
15:26In his speech, Mitchell highlighted the election outcome as an expression of the choices and beliefs
15:32of Grenadians.
15:34So it's important for us to reflect and realize that this election outcome is your choice and reflects
15:43your belief in yourself as a Grenadian. When I said at our independence celebration
15:49that there is greatness in every Grenadian, this is not just a phrase.
15:56It is not just a phrase. It is a recognition that each and every one of us, each and every
16:02one of us
16:03are capable of greatness in our own way. And if we get up with purpose and with meaning to our
16:09lives
16:10and we put our shoulders to the wheel, then individually and collectively we will make Grenada
16:16a greater nation to live in.
16:22Furthermore, before his supporters and members of his executive prime minister, Mitchell bowed to keep
16:27working on behalf of citizens sitting his new term.
16:31And so we have to make sure the same way the four and a half years flew by, it is
16:35the same way the next
16:36five years is going to fly by and the next 10 years is going to fly by. And therefore it
16:41means we have to
16:41get to work immediately. There is no time to waste. Time belongs to God and we do not have time.
16:48And therefore I can assure you that the men and women standing behind me and that brother Tevin,
16:53brother Handel, brother James and the sister James and the entire executive of the National Democratic
17:01Congress will put our shoulders to the wheel and work even harder on behalf of you, the citizens
17:09of Grenada, Clarico and P.T. Martinique.
17:17In this scenario, on Thursday, Venezuela's acting president, Delce RodrÃguez, congratulated
17:22Grenada for the successful holding of their general elections, as well as to Prime Minister
17:27Deacon Mitchell and the National Democratic Congress for their electoral victory. In a statement shared on
17:32social media, the official stated, on behalf of the government and the Venezuelan people,
17:37we congratulate the people and the government of Grenada on the successful holding of their
17:42general elections, as well as Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell and the National Democratic Congress
17:47on their electoral victory. Venezuela reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the bonds of
17:54friendship and cooperation with Grenada in support of peace, integration and the well-being of both peoples.
18:10In this context, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Motley congratulated Deacon Mitchell and his party
18:16on their electoral victory. Motley posted on her ex-account, on behalf of the government and people of
18:21Barbados, I extend a warm congratulations to Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell and the National Democratic
18:27Congress on their resounding electoral victory. An overwhelming mandate is a powerful expression
18:34of trust. It brings with it the profound responsibility of honouring that trust through service to every
18:41citizen and steady work to fulfil the hopes of the people. Barbados and Grenada share a deep friendship
18:48and a common commitment to the progress of our Caribbean and I look forward to continuing our close
18:54partnership, strengthening the bonds between our countries and advancing the interests of our people
18:59within our regional family and beyond. Prime Minister Mitchell, I wish you, your team and the people of
19:06Grenada, Carriquois and Petit Martinique every success as you begin this new chapter together.
19:22Also Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness congratulated Grenada's re-elected Prime Minister Deacon
19:28Mitchell. Through his official account on the social media platform X, Holness stated congratulations to
19:35Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell on his re-election to a second consecutive term as Prime Minister of Grenada.
19:41Canada. This result reflects the confidence that the people of Grenada place in his leadership.
19:47Jamaica looks forward to continuing to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite us
19:53as nations as we advance our common regional interests. I wish you and your team every success
20:00in this new phase of service to the people of Grenada.

20:52Welcome back to From the South, the United Nations Refugee Agency warns that 90 million displaced people
20:59face extreme risks due to the impact of climate-related disasters. The report details that these
21:04millions of people live in countries at high or extreme risk of drought, flooding and severe weather events.
21:11Ahead of the upcoming COP31 climate summit, the international organization called for urgent measures
21:18to protect these vulnerable communities. At the same time, humanitarian agencies urged a redistribution of
21:25global climate funding, renouncing the fact that nations affected by armed conflicts receive only a minimal fraction of support funds.
21:57Yemeni armed forces have reported dozens of civilian casualties following a breach of 61 Saudi-led
22:03airstrikes targeting capital infrastructure and northern provinces. Military spokesperson Brigadier

22:15Saada and neighboring regions within a 24-hour window. Official reports confirmed that double airstrikes on

23:03In Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intercepted a new U.S. drone on the island of Qashem.
23:09The interception was carried out using advanced electronic warfare systems. The drone and MOM-AMQM-170 model
23:19was forced to make a controlled landing on Iranian territory after flying over Qashem Island,
23:24becoming the fifth drone of this type captured by Iranian forces. With this action,
23:29the Iranian military command brings the total number of unmanned aerial vehicles neutralized during recent
23:34conflicts in the region to over 60. In other information, in western Turkey, security forces
23:49have apprehended a gunman responsible for a shooting spree that claimed eight lives across three rural
23:55villages. Turkish authorities launched an intensive manhunt after an attacker armed with a shotgun opened
