00:02Man, our next guest, too, has also won Grammy Awards.
00:07Please welcome from the Black Eyed Peas, Tabu.
00:16All right.
00:19Contrary to people's perspective, I am not the Filipino from the Black Eyed Peas.
00:27Sorry, guys.
00:29That's my brother, Apple Diab.
00:32Love you, Joe.
00:34I'm actually very proud to be Mexicano.
00:40I brought my own Mexicans with me.
00:43And I'm proud to be a Native American representing Los Angeles, California.
00:49So I was thinking, do I freestyle and speak from the heart?
00:53And then I was like, nah, this is Joe Coy, man.
00:54It's got to come off really dope.
00:56It's got to come from the heart.
00:59So I've known Joe Coy.
01:03I've known Joe since back in the days in the B-boy era.
01:07Shout out to my man, Ronnie.
01:09Joe Coy was a B-boy, ladies and gentlemen.
01:12And still to this day, he is a B-boy.
01:15And that's kind of the foundation of our relationship in the B-boy community, loving, advocating for dancers, along with
01:22MCs and comedians.
01:24Joe Coy has always been that guy that was in the ciphers.
01:27He was dreaming big before arenas, before sold-out shows.
01:31He was in the grind.
01:33He was in the hustle.
01:34And that's what I respect about Joe Coy is that you didn't care about status or freaking, you know, glitz
01:41or glamour.
01:42You always were rooted in community.
01:44And I love that about you.
01:45I appreciate your relationship with your son, because I'm a father, too.
01:49And I love what you guys have built.
01:51Can we have a round of applause for Joe and his son?
01:59It was small jams, little stages, dope ciphers with big dreams.
02:05That's Joseph.
02:05I watched Joe go from days of BET Comic View with hair to local spots like the Brea Improv Comedy
02:14Store, even places like the Ice House in Pasadena.
02:18Ooh, Pasadena represent.
02:21Where he was just another hungry comic trying to make it.
02:25Then I saw him on Jay Leno rocking his Filipino flag.
02:28Filipino!
02:29Filipino!
02:30All that energy was evoked, because I knew Manny Pacquiao was fighting in that time period.
02:35And he told me that story.
02:36And he said, Tab, when I went on Jay Leno, all I wanted to do is be a proud Filipino
02:41and represent for my community.
02:43And I really respect that about you, bro.
02:45Is that you always remember where you come from.
02:48That's Joseph.
02:50I did not just see Joe Coy, the comedian.
02:52I saw Joe, the father.
02:54I met a son when he was literally a baby.
02:56I watched him grow into a young man in his 20s.
02:59And, you know, this man is a certified entrepreneur.
03:03I love what you're doing with that shop, man.
03:05Keep doing it.
03:06Your story's dope.
03:07Keep moving on that.
03:09The bond that he has with his son, staying present, even while chasing a dream that demands everything from him.
03:15That's when you see who Joe really is.
03:18That's Joseph.
03:20Joe's not just my brother.
03:21He is my son, Journey's Nino.
03:24The type of Nino that shows up with Gucci socks and Supreme chest.
03:32It was a Supreme chest and Gucci socks.
03:35And my son was four years old, ladies and gentlemen.
03:38Gucci?
03:39Thanks, Joe.
03:40That's Joseph.
03:43But the real moment that stays with me in my life that I will never forget, that Define Joe, is
03:50in 2014 I was battling cancer.
03:52You guys probably didn't know that, but I was battling cancer in 2014.
03:56And I fought hard to be here on this stage beyond mortality, beyond anything.
04:03Two claps.
04:09Going back to that time zone.
04:11Beyond chemo, hospitals, long nights, the kind of days where my body was tired, beat up, my spirit was diminished,
04:18and even food wasn't feeling good anymore.
04:21I could not eat.
04:22I tasted metallic.
04:23Nausea was my reality.
04:25Everything tasted off.
04:27But then one day my boy Joe Coy comes to visit me.
04:36He didn't just show up with jokes or stories.
04:40He definitely had those, too.
04:42He showed up with comfort food, Filipino food from Max's.
04:46And even though it's funny, you don't understand what that meant to me at that time period.
04:50Because I wasn't able to eat, Joe.
04:51And when you showed up and you're like, Tab, I got food for you.
04:54You didn't make me feel like an alien.
04:56You didn't make me feel isolated when I was doing chemo.
04:58You made me feel like, nah, we got this, brother.
05:00You're going to win this battle.
05:01And I'm here with you.
05:03And that meant everything to me, Joe.
05:07Now, I don't know what magic was in that bag.
05:09But that day, for the first time in a long time, I was able to eat.
05:12It was like my body recognized that before it recognized the food.
05:17We sat there, just the two of us.
05:19No stage.
05:20No spotlights.
05:20No cameras.
05:21Just brothers.
05:22We talked.
05:23We reminisced about the old days.
05:25We built like we always have built.
05:26It was not about comedy or success or sold-out shows.
05:31It was about presence.
05:32It was about love.
05:33It was about a brother showing up when it really counts.
05:36That's Joseph.
05:39When you see him on that stage making thousands of people laugh, understand this.
05:43You're not just witnessing a communion at work.
05:46You're witnessing years of struggle, sacrifice, faith, and brotherhood.
05:50You are seeing a man who carried his culture, his family, and his people on his back
05:55all the way from small b-boy events to small clubs to fucking SoFi Stadium.
06:08I'm proud of you, Joe.
06:09I love you.
06:11So on the count of three, I need everybody in here to show your love and say,
06:16that's Joseph.
06:17One, two, three.
06:19That's Joseph.
06:21Love you, Joe.
