00:06Hi, well, ladies and gentlemen, this is the moment I think everybody is here to see.
00:12Ladies and gentlemen, the man of the day, the man himself, please welcome Joe Coy.
00:33I love you. Oh, my God. This is amazing. Thank you, everybody.
00:41I can't believe I'm looking out into the audience and Martin is right there.
00:51And, you know, when you have dreams, right, like when you're a kid.
00:59Why do I always get emotional? It's so hard. Right. All right.
01:05So let me tell you what you are, Martin. Oh, wow. I hate this part.
01:12You know, when you when you you you struggle with identity and you're trying to figure out your place and
01:18then and then you just want to find somebody that that inspires you indirectly.
01:23Right. And I love stand up. When I saw Eddie Murphy do Delirious, I'm like, I need that red outfit
01:29now.
01:31That leather outfit needs to be on me.
01:34And and I'm going to be a comedian.
01:38And that's all I wanted to be was a comedian.
01:40And so all I did was just watch comedy nonstop.
01:45And it was hard to find things that spoke to me.
01:49Until I saw.
01:52Martin.
01:55You know, I mean, when I saw Martin.
01:57And talking about life and and and talking about struggle and then and then me just identifying with it, going,
02:07yeah, I'm the same cat.
02:10I'm going through the same shit as he is.
02:14I'm Filipino and white and he's black.
02:16But for some reason, I'm getting this.
02:19You know, I mean, I know I know it sounds weird, but that was my back then.
02:24We didn't have cable. We had it was a box with a dial.
02:30It was like it was like a TV on steroids.
02:33And every now and then people couldn't afford the channel.
02:36So they would just scramble it with a line.
02:38And every now and then it would just pop up at a clear channel.
02:41Like, oh, that's what cable looks like.
02:43And then it would get, yeah, but you're broke.
02:44And then it would go back to being squiggly again.
02:47So we didn't have that type of cable.
02:50I didn't have cable.
02:51So when we finally did get HBO and I got Def Jam and I got to see Martin, that was
02:57my, that was my, my lifeline.
03:00I was like, oh, that's what I, that's what I want to be right there.
03:02I want to be that.
03:04So I just want you to know that, Martin, I paid for tickets at the Aladdin Theater to watch you.
03:11And, uh, I was sitting there, I think I was 19 when I watched you, the Aladdin Theater in Vegas.
03:16And I saw you and, uh, and it was you.
03:20I can't remember who was opening for you, but I just remember sitting there watching you going, yeah, I'm going
03:25to be this guy.
03:26Cause he had a leather outfit on that night too.
03:28So I was like, oh shit, he must love Eddie Murphy too.
03:34Right.
03:35Am I right?
03:35So he had the leather and I'm like, okay, I'm going to get that leather outfit.
03:41So this journey, if you don't answer that phone or at least throw it away, someone brought a phone from
03:47the seventies and it's been ringing off the hook during my time.
03:53Um, but, but the journey of just doing this was, uh, was, uh, this was, this was my outlet and,
04:03uh, and, and, and, and it was people like you, Martin, that inspired me and inspired Tiffany.
04:09And then when we came, when I came to LA, I remember going over here and I saw Eddie Murphy's
04:17handprints and I put them in, I think we all did it.
04:21And then I noticed he had a size eight and a half shoe.
04:24I was like, damn, he is small.
04:26These are baby feet.
04:30But I just remember, oh man, this is, this is where I need to be.
04:35And, uh, I don't know where I'm going with this.
04:38Uh, but I just want you to know that it's just like people have dreams and indirectly get inspired.
04:45And it's people like you, Martin, and it's people like Juan Yeh and it's people like Tab and, you know
04:52what I mean?
04:52It's like indirectly we inspire, inspire people that baby face, like, like it's what you guys do is amazing.
05:00But I want you to know there's kids out there like me that just, you know, have a dream.
05:06And when they see people like you do it, then we know that the windows are open and the doors
05:10are open and it's, and it can happen.
05:12And, uh, and I want, I always wanted that to be like what I did to inspire.
05:18I always wanted like my son to be able to go, oh, damn, my dad did it so I can
05:24do it.
05:26So, thank you.
05:28Oh, so this is like a big moment.
05:38So, um, you know, keep pushing hard and, and just understand it's okay to fail.
05:46Cause, uh, if you're not failing, you're not trying fail as hard as you can.
05:51And even when they look at you and they go, ah, look at you, you failed.
05:53You just look at them and go, well, what are you doing?
05:56It looks like you're just standing there watching people.
05:58I'm going to keep trying cause I'm not done.
06:01I want to keep going.
06:03SoFi standing with this guy right here, Gabe.
06:12Gabe always indirectly inspired me too.
06:14I was at the laugh factory working at Nordstrom Rack and, uh, and I was really funny and Gabe
06:20would go up there and, uh, he was already blowing up.
06:24You knew someone was blowing up cause they come from the, you know, they come from no money
06:28and then all of a sudden they get new money and then they spend it on bullshit.
06:33Gabe, Gabe had two Hummers.
06:35I'm like, what do you got two Hummers for?
06:38He drove both of them to the laugh factory.
06:41I'm like, what are you doing?
06:42I think Alfred, Alfred, were you in?
06:44Yeah.
06:44Alfred was in the other car driving it for him.
06:46He's like, it's Gabe's.
06:50And Gabe was like, and Gabe was like, Hey, you want to go on the road to open for me?
06:55Remember that game?
06:56Yeah.
06:56That's exactly how you sound.
07:00Hey, you want to run an open for me?
07:03And I was like, no, man.
07:04Cause you know, I had the kid, you know, and I was like, no, I gotta, I gotta stay back.
07:08You know what I mean?
07:09But I would watch Gabe from the distance.
07:11You know what I mean?
07:12He was just blowing up and I was like, okay, I can do that.
07:15You know what I mean?
07:16I think a lot of people see things and they get jealous.
07:19Instead of getting jealous, why don't you look at it and get inspired?
07:21You know what I mean?
07:24When you see someone like Martin Lawrence doing what he does, get inspired.
07:28When you see Gabe selling out Dodger Stadium, get inspired.
07:31When you see someone like Wanya and Babyface selling out all these arenas and writing all
07:35these songs, get inspired by that.
07:37We live in a time where everyone's so negative, man.
07:40Start being positive.
07:42Look at the good, the highlights.
07:44You know what I mean?
07:45So my son is here.
07:47My son's mommy is here.
07:51I'm going to shout everybody out.
07:52I'm sorry.
07:53It's my time.
07:55B-Boy Ronnie's here.
07:56Joey Gila's here.
07:57Dee and Emile is here.
08:00And you know what I mean?
08:01That's another thing, Martin.
08:02These two cats right here.
08:03I just want you to know these two Filipinos right back here.
08:07Yeah, they were doing all the designs for black clothing.
08:11I just want you to know that.
08:13All the fubu, all that.
08:15Yeah, it was Filipinos doing that.
08:16I just want you to know that.
08:20Filipinos and black people, we're like this.
08:23It's crazy.
08:24Just ask Wanye's wife, Amber.
08:28Ryan Coogler's wife.
08:31This is all I wanted to say is, this is just one of those moments where, right, Tiffany?
08:40Yeah.
08:41Because she wasn't lying about the hot dog song.
08:45Like, we literally did have a song called Hot Dogs Wrapped in Bacon.
08:49I don't know if you saw me.
08:50I jumped right up and I sang it with her.
08:52But I want you to know, when you're broke, that hot dog tastes like a filet mignon.
08:58And she wasn't lying about the condiments.
09:01Right?
09:02We're like, I paid for all of these condiments.
09:06So I'm going to put as much as I can on this bun.
09:09And then Tiffany goes, can I have two?
09:10I go, where are you going to put all the condiments?
09:13She goes, I need another piece of aluminum.
09:18I'm going to wrap it up and eat it tomorrow.
09:20I'm like, oh, my God, that's disgusting.
09:27So just know that, everybody.
09:30We all came from, like, you know, humble beginnings, man.
09:34And we worked hard to get where we're at now, Tiff.
09:39Can I tell one more story about you, Tiff?
09:42Tiffany had yellow jellies.
09:47You know those jelly shoes?
09:49It was just, I think it was literally made out of jelly.
09:52The kind where you'd take it off and, like, you would see the pattern of the jelly on your foot.
09:58Tiffany used to have yellow jellies and a yellow tight top with a jean set.
10:03And she always wore it on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
10:06Every time she came to the club on a Tuesday or Thursday, I'm like, oh, she's going to wear that
10:09yellow jelly fit.
10:12And, right, just like clockwork, she'd walk in.
10:15I'm like, there's that outfit.
10:16But she wore it like no one knew.
10:18Like, ah, look at that.
10:21And then she'd do her set.
10:23And then, but no one knew.
10:26You know what I mean?
10:26And no one knew that that was her only outfit.
10:29It was your uniform.
10:32No one knew.
10:33And that was the same thing with me, man.
10:35No one knew.
10:37And, but we had a big dream.
10:39And, and, and it finally happened.
10:42You know, we finally got to do these big shows together.
10:44So seeing you walk out on stage with me, it's always just like this, this emotional feeling of just like,
10:51damn, it really happened, man.
10:52So I'm running.
10:55I'm rambling right now.
10:57AJ, oh, shit.
10:58AJ's here from the Backstreet Boys.
11:06My son is right there.
11:08And he never, he never likes to dress up.
11:16So when he put these shoes on, I'm like, he's going to have a blister tonight.
11:25Sean, Tisha, I'm going to keep rambling.
11:29Give me, give me like three more minutes.
11:33And then I'll be done.
11:35All right.
11:38Because I'm trying not to cry.
11:45That's all right.
11:45Okay.
11:46I'm sorry.
11:49All right.
11:50So the one thing that I want to do is just get my voice out there indirectly.
11:55I want to inspire a lot of Filipinos.
11:59Without letting everybody know that I'm Filipino, I just want people to hear this story.
12:04When I do that voice of my mom, it's not that I'm trying to, I'm not making fun of everybody.
12:10I really want you to know that's how my mom talks.
12:13You know what I mean?
12:14When she says Joseph, that's exactly what she sounds like.
12:18And when you hear how amazing she is and how hard she worked and how tough she is, I want
12:25people to identify her as a mom.
12:28You know what I mean?
12:29I want people to be like, yo, my mom does that.
12:32That was one of my favorite things when Martin and I had lunch.
12:36He goes, man, that stuff you say about your mom, man.
12:39I hear my mom in that.
12:40And I go, that's exactly what I'm talking about, Martin.
12:42That's what I like.
12:43It's not about being Filipino or black or Latino or whatever.
12:46Moms are moms, man.
12:48That was my whole point of letting those stories be heard.
12:53And Martin was just going, yeah, man, I love it when your mom says this because my mom did that.
12:57I'm like, yeah, Martin, thank you.
12:59He goes, I love those stories.
13:00You got to keep doing it.
13:01I go, I promise you I will.
13:02You make your mom proud.
13:03I go, yes.
13:04And then we were eating at, I forgot the name of the restaurant.
13:09What was that restaurant?
13:10The crab place in Beverly Hills.
13:13Crustacean.
13:14We were at Crustacean.
13:15And Martin's like, yo, I love them stories about your mom.
13:17You got to keep telling those stories, man, because so many people identify with that.
13:21They understand that.
13:23I go, I thank you, Martin, man.
13:24And I promise you I'll keep doing those stories.
13:27And he goes, I love those stories about your mom.
13:29I love your mom.
13:30And I go, thank you.
13:30And then the owner of Crustacean walked in, and I could see her on the corner of my eye.
13:36She had short hair, Asian woman.
13:39And she started walking towards the table.
13:41And in my head, I go, oh, she wants to meet Martin.
13:43But Martin has no idea that that's the owner of Crustacean.
13:47And I just looked at Martin.
13:48I go, thank you for saying that about my mom.
13:50That's why I brought her here.
13:52I want you to meet my mom.
13:55And Martin jumped up like he was meeting a, like, oh, my God.
13:59You, you, you made Joe Coy.
14:02It is an honor to meet you, Mrs. Coy.
14:05Please have a seat and sit down.
14:07I go, I go, that's not my mom, Martin.
14:09He go, you motherfucker.
14:12I thought that's your mom.
14:18And then she goes, can I just have a picture with you?
14:25By the way, that's a true story.
14:28But that was, that was my favorite moment was sharing that, those words.
14:32Not that part.
14:33That was just fun.
14:34But hearing the guy that inspired me to do what I do, say that about the stories about my mom,
14:42knew that I was doing the right thing.
14:44And I'll continue to keep doing those stories.
14:47And I'll keep telling those, those stories about my mom and just uplifting my culture
14:51and just letting everybody know that, man, we're all the same.
14:57And comedy just makes it a lot of fun.
15:00Life is too serious.
15:01Life is too, I like to say this, life is too funny to take seriously.
15:05So just laugh.
15:07So I love you guys.
15:08Thank you so much for this night, this day.
15:11And thank you for coming out.
15:13I love you.
15:18Oh my God.
15:19Of course, Smook and Matt, Blake and Joe and Dan and Anna, everybody.
15:23Katie, I love you guys.
