00:00is there anything more satisfying and exciting than being on holiday well yes a bargain holiday
00:12of course getting champagne tastes for your beer budget but is that possible when even
00:20the average UK holiday costs more than 1200 quid for just five days from all-inclusive to
00:28long haul or short breaks I want the inside track on the best way to find a bargain to do that I've
00:37persuaded a crack squad of experts to spill their secrets insiders who've worked at the heart of the
00:44holiday industry at some of the biggest companies in the business I've spent more than 20 years working
00:51for different airlines such as British Airways and KLM I work for companies including Thomas Cook
00:56Tui and easier holidays and the country's leading brands knock knock will take me behind closed doors
01:03this is where the magic happens from hotels and holiday operators to airlines travel agencies
01:11and even cruise lines they're sharing their travel industry tricks to holidaying better for less
01:18this time long haul we've got the money saving hacks to help you holiday for less
01:29that is a massive saving we're shining a light on fake reviews if I am able to get 10 positive reviews
01:42submitted to your business listing will you give me a hundred dollars we've got the best in-flight hacks
01:48from how to upgrade your meal without upgrading your ticket how is that possible to flying long distance
01:56for low cost three hours long that's the sweet spot for making money so sit back and relax while I show
02:04you how to have a long haul holiday on a short haul budget the UK has seen a surge in long haul trips
02:18abroad research suggests a third of us are planning a far-flung trip what can I say it was absolutely
02:26amazing we've been swimming every day with countries like Thailand and Vietnam proving to be more cost
02:33effective than some European destinations you can see why oh wow people love to go on long haul
02:42holidays you know it gives them the ability to be able to travel for a bit longer experience different
02:46destinations and also the further away we get from home culturally we're in a completely new world
02:54sandy beaches five-star hotels and beautiful scenery long haul holidays really are the ultimate getaway
03:03and with the average price of a long haul holiday trip costing around 1 300 pounds per person
03:11they're also the ultimate investment so how can we save money when traveling further afield
03:19for far away holidays there's one thing that can really set the price soaring flights
03:25my name is john grant my career began working for some of europe's major airlines british airways british
03:33caledonian and klm royal dutch airlines when it comes to flights john's got the fair facts ultimately
03:40as a passenger we pay for a ticket the airline only receives an element of that fare and in the united
03:48kingdom we have to pay airport departure tax and that is a very significant proportion of the airfare on
03:57some routes the uk has one of the highest rates of air passenger duty in the world it ranges from 14
04:07pounds for domestic to 224 pounds for the longest flights that's 224 pounds on top of your fare
04:18it's a significant source of revenue for the government last year the treasury collected over
04:23four billion pounds and the tax is set to be increased by about 14 in april but you could find a way
04:31around it one of the ways to avoid airport departure tax is to start your long-haul journey
04:40from an airport outside of the united kingdom that can save you up to 250 pounds per passenger
04:47and that for a family of four suddenly becomes a thousand pounds
04:52one person who knows all about this hack is holiday expert chelsea dickinson she's a sun-seeking
04:59money-saving guru who's helped thousands of followers save money on their holidays and she's
05:05no stranger to long haul either hello from napa tokyo i'm here to find out how we can all get cheap
05:13long-distance flights hi chelsea hi jasmine good thanks i thought we'd get a little bit geeky today
05:23okay i can do geeky yeah and talk about something very sexy taxes and fees everyone's favorite topic
05:33yeah because it does really impact the overall price of your flight whilst we all want to get
05:39that direct flight from the uk unfortunately that can sometimes be the most expensive way to travel
05:46but it's also the convenience factor isn't it i know i hear what you're saying however i think
05:52it's really important to understand what makes up that price that we see on the screen because it does
05:57mean further down the line you're going to be able to find some ways to hack your way around it to
06:03save yourself a bit of cash i've got an example for you that hopefully will show how taxes and fees
06:11can really change the price and even save some money now my ears have pricked up so found a flight from
06:19london all the way down to cape town so this flight would cost you 766 pounds the airfare for this flight
06:32is 477 pounds the remaining 289 pounds is taxes and fees that's almost 40 percent of the ticket price
06:44so next we are looking at flying from dublin the total flight price from dublin is a lot lower
06:51it's 572 pounds that's quite a saving don't you think which is great if you live in dublin and you
07:02can fly from dublin but obviously if you live somewhere else you've got to factor in the cost
07:06of getting from wherever you are to dublin yeah 100 so factoring in the price of a flight to get to
07:13dublin the total price would actually be 630 pounds so that's still quite a significant saving
07:22if you fly from dublin the taxes and fees are only 18 percent of the ticket price
07:29so even with the extra flight you're still saving 136 pounds for a family of four that's over 500
07:37pounds saved if you're lucky enough to live in the scottish highlands or northern ireland there's an
07:46added bonus you don't pay air passenger duty on long-haul flights at all that means if you fly from
07:56inverness to london heathrow to melbourne you would pay 213 pounds less than if you boarded the same
08:03heathrow to melbourne flight in london even though you're also paying for the inverness to heathrow leg
08:11but sadly you can't beat the system by booking inverness to melbourne and only getting on at heathrow
08:18if you miss that flight it cancels the booking frequent flyer lloyd knows how not to get caught
08:23out you have to still go to the destination don't just think you can book that flight and get on
08:28the second flight in london if you want really stellar savings and you're in the mood to treat
08:34yourself why not take a look at business class i've got this flight here it's from london
08:42to all the way over here to bangkok
08:46i'm not sure if i am ready for this price business class from london to bangkok
08:53three thousand and twenty two pounds that's a bit spendy no one's saying yes to that are they
09:00no so we're gonna fly from
09:05rome rome's a good one to be checking for those uh cheaper business class rates
09:10business class from rome to bangkok is 1173 pounds and with a flight to rome
09:21on top of it as well you're looking at more around the 1295 pounds that's a massive difference
09:28such a huge difference the airfare taxes and fees are all cheaper from rome and even with the flight
09:35there you're still saving a whopping 1700 pounds one thing that is worth bearing in mind if you ever
09:43have to cancel your flights and you don't have any refundable rights you can still claim some of
09:50those taxes and fees back so in most cases most airlines will allow you to get your air passenger
09:55duty back and sometimes a few of the airport surcharges as well so say if you cancel this flight
10:01you might get around 100 pounds back they don't tell you that do they not really sneaky
10:09who said tax was boring you also have to consider whether there's an environmental impact to
10:19breaking up your journey like yeah we need to think about the total carbon emissions of our journey and
10:26there's some really handy carbon emissions calculators out there on the internet that you can use there's
10:32one on the un website and there are also ways that you can offset your carbon emissions as well
10:38websites like carbonfootprint.com and myclimate.org will help you calculate your flight's carbon
10:45emissions and if you want to offset emissions the easiest way to do it would be to opt in when you
10:51book your flight so if you're flying far away with family or splashing out on business class there are
10:59big savings to be made just make sure the first leg of your journey takes you somewhere with low air
11:06passenger duty and an airport with lower fees try ireland spain portugal all have lower taxes and charges
11:16coming up how to hack your way to a better in-flight meal that's unbelievable and the far-flung destinations
11:29that are closer to home than you think i can fully see exactly why everyone says it's a duke from hawaii
11:35i'm on a mission to get you the best tips to a cheap as chips long haul holiday we've discovered
11:49a hack to slash the cost of your ticket that's a massive saving now what about upgrading your in-flight meal
11:59if you're going on a long flight chances are you've prepped everything you can to make it comfortable
12:08you've packed your pillow worn your comfiest clothes and downloaded your favorite shows
12:13but there's still one part of the journey that's up in the air and that's the food
12:18so this is our meal on our flight to abu dhabi
12:28the food was just not that we were stuck on this flight for 13 hours i looked absolutely grim
12:36from streaming films to sending emails there's a lot we can now do at 35 000 feet and yet there's one
12:44thing that still feels impossible and that's getting a good hot meal i'm john strickland i've
12:51been in the airline industry over 40 years john's worked with numerous airlines ba klm buzz airline
13:00food really is is a point you could debate all day it's a differentiator for airlines mainly on long
13:06haul flights and in their premium cabins by which i mean business class and premium economy their
13:11airlines want to present a really good offer of food and drink many years ago i had a
13:17almost a unique opportunity to rebrand an airline we did a huge amount of research around the meal
13:24tray what's on the meal tray what people touch on the meal tray where's the best place to put the hot
13:30on tray on the meal tray is it in front of them is it at the back of a tray um is it to the left it was
13:38yeah i mean there's a lot of psychological research that goes into travel and you know the best products
13:44that you can create and it's not just psychology the airlines scrutinize it's also the science of
13:52flavor to understand the lengths the industry goes to to tantalize our taste buds i'm going behind the
14:00scenes at one of the uk's largest in-flight catering facilities if you've flown long haul out of
14:08london there's a good chance you've eaten a meal that was made here wow
14:22oh look the little trays i'm with executive chef julian dugmore to find out the secret
14:31ingredients to delivering a dish at 35 000 feet wow this is where the magic happens look at this
14:43so when you're flying at altitude you tend to not taste saltiness as much as you would do at ground
14:49level and you don't taste sweetness it has less effect on your palate oh that's so interesting
14:56so your taste buds aren't as switched on as they would normally be yes and and the way we compensate
15:02is using very tasty ingredients umami flavors it's often overlooked but umami is our fifth basic taste
15:12it's a strong savory taste and it's the one flavor that keeps its punch even when we're flying high
15:19umami which is why chefs like julian work hard to design meals full of high umami foods so we have
15:29chicken mousseline which is like a chicken mousse that we formed in this mold but it has got truffles
15:35and tarragon in there the chicken stock has also got mushrooms in it and then we've also done some
15:40roasted oyster mushrooms as well when it comes to umami more is more and julian has plenty of creative
15:48ways to pack it into everything we eat on the plane so soy sauce miso we will also do things like
15:57seaweed as an example certain cheeses maybe like parmesan that just bring in their depth of flavor
16:03to the meal flavor isn't the only thing that's compromised cooking for altitude has a lot more
16:10complications than on the ground we've got a height restriction within the trays that fit into the
16:17flight carts and it has to be below that otherwise your product does not fit into the aircraft flight
16:22card these little trays might be packed to precision on the ground but the real challenge comes in the sky
16:30so here we have a premium economy dish it is essentially fish and chips okay is that quite a
16:40tricky one to do on board the aircraft the way we get around trying to keep things crispy on board
16:46instead of using deep fried chips we will do roast potato wedges with regards to the deep fried fish
16:52itself how we try to manage in keeping it crispy is to make sure that we reheat the food within a set
16:59time frame so that we do not allow the build up of steam which ultimately will make the fish
17:05soggy a bit soggy no one wants a soggy coating from tricky trays to soggy suppers plain food really is
17:14fighting against the odds but with limited options in the sky i want to find out if there are any hacks
17:22to make airplane food better this is barry smith he's a sensory scientist and he's got airplane
17:38dining down to a fine art so barry why does airplane food have such a bad press well it's really the fault
17:48of the environment the sound of cabin noise white noise in your ears that has a suppressive effect
17:55on some of the things we can taste really yeah let's simulate the sounds of an aircraft noise
18:03is it really that loud it's really that loud it's about 89 to 95 decibels to help me understand how the
18:11noise of the cabin impacts my enjoyment of the food i'm going to try eating with some noise cancelling
18:17headphones on can you hear me pardon how is that possible it's like the best cashew nut i've ever had in my
18:37life great that's unbelievable so that shows you just how much noise is interfering with our
18:47perception of the flavors that we're eating and as soon as we block that out and get you to concentrate
18:53on what's going on in the mouth you can even hear your own crunching but the intensity of the flavor
18:58comes out so noise cancelling means flavor enhancing but what if you don't have headphones
19:05well umami packed foods are immune to the cabin noise
19:12if you think of the things we could have on an aircraft that are not going to be affected by
19:18that loud noise in your ears they're going to be cherry tomatoes they're going to be parmesan
19:25they're even going to be things like tomato juice and champagne
19:31my two favorite drinks to have on board a plane no is that a coincidence or what it's not you need
19:38to have something with lots of umami and the thing you can have on a plane that has lots of umami
19:44is tomato juice so that is going to have so much more flavor than any of the other drinks you can be
19:52given on board the good news is if we want to have a drink and make sure all that aroma reaches us
19:58then we should have champagne
20:02now we're talking yes so this is a very good drink to have when on an aircraft precisely because those
20:10bubbles that are coming out of the glass yeah they are delivering little packages of popping aroma some
20:18of them will get into the nose but in the mouth they'll be all around the mouth getting to the
20:22back of the the throat and up to the nose very quickly so that's a reason for having a fizzy drink
20:29and the other reason for having champagne is champagne when it's made on the the leaves the the the
20:36yeasts when the yeasts die they give off glutamic acid and glutamic acid is an amino acid that's
20:45huge amounts of umami in it okay and the good news is when you combine the umami in champagne
20:55with some of the umami rich ingredients in your food they'll boost each other right so everything
21:01will taste that little bit better cheers cheers i feel like you should have one as well i feel like that
21:07if champagne's not on the menu there's another simple hack guaranteed to boost flavor
21:17one of the other things that you can do would be to add some soy sauce
21:22so if you have some little sachets of soy sauce that you could just sprinkle spread over the food
21:28again more umami packed flavor so having a little sachet of soy sauce would be more effective than having
21:36like little salt and pepper or something like that absolutely if you really want to embrace the
21:41senses you don't want to forget your nose because smells make up about 80 percent of what we perceive
21:48as taste there is another technique that we can use and it's it's a bit messier you're not smelling
21:56things because of the the low pressure but also the dryness of the air and you have to have the mucous
22:02membrane wet if you're going to smell things okay so you could always take um a nasal spray
22:10a saline nasal spray does this work taste more it does work it does work
22:18okay
22:22my airway feels so much more open yes that i can actually yes smell and taste everything much
22:29better time to put barry's tips to the test and see if i really can make the airplane food taste any better
22:41this is where it starts to get embarrassing
22:47soy sauce
22:47so there you have it the cheap secret ingredients to a better in-flight meal earplugs soy sauce and a nasal spray
23:10don't forget to wash it all down with an umami packed drink like my tomato juice kombucha is
23:18another great option if you can't stretch to champagne
23:23coming up the secret to cheap flights it's a great way to to get a taste of another country
23:38book a long-haul holiday and you're investing serious money flying thousands of miles and
23:46counting down for months so getting it right matters
23:51you've done all the research price check the deals requested your annual leave you're finally ready to book
23:58that holiday you've been saving for now all you need is the perfect hotel a nice big room great food a
24:07gorgeous pool and the kind of reviews that give you the confidence to click book
24:16my name's sarah martin i've spent probably 25 years plus working within the travel industry along retail
24:23travel agents with a wide range of experience sarah knows what matters to us when it comes to booking
24:31a holiday people don't like to part with their money and when they're spending an awful lot of money on
24:36a holiday i think having that option to be able to read people's reviews that are honest of where they've
24:43been and their experience it gives people that expectation of what they're walking into a review can
24:49really influence consumer behavior joe rhodes is a travel investigator for consumer champions which
24:57she's been holding companies to account for over eight years for say a hotel room you're much more
25:03likely to book if you read about other holiday makers really positive experiences in that hotel
25:10with almost half of us reading reviews before booking a holiday reviews 8.7
25:17it's safe to say they are important but there's a problem
25:24there are entire businesses companies that are based on submitting fake reviews to various review
25:32hosting platforms and we call these paid review farms i'm becky foley i am the vice president of
25:39trust and safety at trip advisor i've been a trip advisor for over 10 years
25:44becky leads the team dedicated to user-generated content and fraud prevention what these businesses
25:51do is they will contact hotel restaurant or tour operators and they will ask them hey if i am able
26:00to get 10 positive reviews submitted to your business listing will you give me a hundred dollars and hotel
26:08owners or restaurant owners sometimes will engage in that because they are very incentivized to go up in
26:15the rating and ranking on trip advisor and it's bad news for those of us planning a far-flung getaway
26:23last year trip advisor found the worst locations for paid reviews were all long haul indonesia vietnam and
26:31the u.s and we got stung in our hotel in denaang so i had booked this read the reviews and i was like oh
26:39they all seem good booked it got there was in shock there's no way everyone is writing this hotel amazing
26:47because it's so bad and then on closer inspection i realized all the reviews were indeed fake so just
26:56how many fake reviews are out there last year trip advisor removed over 2.7 million fake reviews from our
27:03site just under 80 of them were removed before they were ever posted the other 20 were removed after we
27:11identified a pattern and we were able to go back and make sure that we got all of the fake reviews down
27:18that's only on trip advisor there's also yelp facebook google and so on in fact 80 of online
27:26reviews are on google and the fake ones are getting harder to spot ai is making it more difficult in
27:34terms of fake reviews for one they're able to generate them at such volume and so much quicker
27:41than a human could but also the language is becoming more sophisticated so it's going to be much more
27:48difficult for the consumer to actually differentiate between a genuine and a fake review and a human
27:55and a robot voice lovely stay clean and cozy right in the heart of the city staff were helpful with tips
28:04on where to eat and what to see ideal base for exploring the city on foot would happily return
28:11sounds convincing doesn't it but this is an ai generated review i'd be fooled it's clear fake
28:18reviews are a problem so what's being done about them since april last year fake reviews have been
28:26illegal in the uk so my name is sarah gillespie i'm a freelance travel journalist for major uk
28:32publications and i've been writing about consumer travel for about five years sarah's got the lowdown
28:39on the law any company that is found to be hosting fake reviews on its site can face a fine of up to
28:4710 percent of its global turnover which is a huge amount so companies now have a huge incentive to to
28:54get rid of fake reviews that level of fine should be a significant deterrent so why are there still
29:01so many fake reviews ai is it's becoming more sophisticated so it's more difficult to distinguish
29:09it from say human voice the sheer volume of reviews that it will be able to generate it's going to be very
29:17difficult for any verification system to keep up with it so how can we at home beat the bots
29:25one thing you can do is when you are scrolling through them is clicking on sometimes you have
29:30a profile aligned with you as a reviewer and when you click through and there's no other reviews there
29:36there's no photo it does lead you to think is this person legit if you can see maybe they've left 20
29:42reviews in an hour that's typically not going to be a legitimate review to spot a fake review you want
29:48to actually read the review first have a look at what's being said because a fake review will quite
29:54often be quite generic real reviews read left by real people will quite often include information that
30:00is completely useless they'll say stuff like oh we went for my wife's anniversary or for a 60th birthday
30:07none of that has any relevance to the review if you think you've found the perfect place check social media
30:15travelers will often show you their hotel room or food just make sure they're not sponsored posts or ads
30:25even for deal conscious travelers flights remain one of the biggest costs of a long-haul holiday
30:32a cost many of us have come to accept but change could be on the horizon
30:37of a long-haul holiday a long-haul holiday a long-haul holiday a long-haul holiday a long-haul holiday
30:42from no thrill service to endless add-ons it's fair to say that low-cost airlines have completely
30:48changed the way we see travel but there's one low-cost concept that's never really taken off
30:55and that is long distance
30:59the whole evolution of the low-cost airline sector has been can we find markets that are about three hours long
31:07that's the sweet spot for making money full airplane turn it round another full airplane lots of revenue
31:17for anything longer than three hours you'd usually have to depend on a legacy airline one that offers
31:23a full service like british airways or emirates but advancements in airplane technology mean that
31:29traditional low-cost airplanes can now fly for longer last five to seven years has seen the introduction
31:38of these next generation aircraft so essentially it's the same aircraft it looks the same it has new
31:44engines that have more thrust and therefore allow the airline to operate that to longer sectors
31:51in the past you needed to fly on a big jet like a 787 or an a330 to get you to places like africa
32:01or asia but now a smaller more fuel efficient plane can get you there and that is just a game changer
32:10because a smaller plane is cheaper to run and that means low-cost airlines can get into the market
32:16it is conceivable for a narrow-bodied low-cost airline to operate from the united kingdom or ireland all
32:26the way to the east coast of the united states offering low-cost services never once to follow
32:33the trends low-cost airlines aren't just replicating typical routes they're identifying new ones we recently
32:42launched london gatwick to medina in saudi arabia and that's the first time there's been any connectivity
32:48between the uk and medina low-cost airlines are opening up new routes and new possibilities with
32:55budget flights already available from the uk to places like cape verde and egypt and in europe low-cost
33:03airlines can get you as far as the gambia but what if you want to go further you could get two low-cost
33:10flights and have a stopover holiday for free i've been doing some research and if i wanted to fly
33:21from london to dubai it would cost me about 925 pounds but if i chose to connect two budget flights
33:31and flew from london to istanbul with pegasus and then from istanbul to dubai with fly dubai it would
33:38only cost me 690 pounds that's more than 200 pounds cheaper which is money you could spend on your
33:47holiday
33:54if you really wanted to capitalize on those savings there are some destinations that will relax the
33:59rules for short stays one way that you can maximize a long-haul journey is to take advantage
34:05of some schemes offered by certain countries where you can stop over in a country without
34:11having to pay for a visa which can sometimes be quite expensive sarah's got the inside scoop on super
34:18stopovers a really savvy way to max out your adventure china has started offering stays of up to 10 days
34:28visa free for uk travelers in up to 60 destinations which includes beijing and shanghai so if you're
34:36flying to a country in east asia such as japan or korea you could break it up with a stay in china
34:44also chinese airlines do tend to be much cheaper so you can also take advantage of the cheaper chinese
34:50fares if china's not on your bucket list there are still plenty of other options
34:57so there are certain destinations that will do certain promotional activities where travelers
35:04leave the airport if they have a long stop over and have a look around the country and then take
35:10their ongoing flight sometimes even stay the night in some cases i would have a look and see if any
35:16destination that you're stopping over in uh will will let you do that because it's a great way to to
35:21get a taste of another country abu dhabi's stopover program allows etiad airways passengers with a
35:28layover of at least 24 hours to book up to two free nights in a premium hotel it also offers discounted
35:37hotel bookings for longer stays of up to six nights
35:43if you want to try connecting low budget flights websites like sky scanner and kayak
35:48are good places to start because they can show the cheapest routes with the connecting flights
35:55the only word of caution that i would give you need to know that if one leg of your trip gets
36:01cancelled or delayed neither airline is under any obligation to compensate you because you're not
36:06flying with the same airline so just keep that in mind make sure that you leave enough time for the
36:11changeover in between because you will also have to pick up your luggage so with some clever planning
36:19and the right insurance you can bring the cost of your long haul trip down and there's more
36:29for some of us flying somewhere exotic is what long haul is all about the sights and smells of india
36:37or the food of thailand are unique but for some destinations the views and the vibe can be replicated
36:47in a location that might be a lot cheaper to visit and when the average cost of one of these holidays
36:54for a family of four is five thousand pounds that's tempting i'm nicola i'm 27 and i'm from stevenage
37:02and i love holidays nicola has chosen the azores for her upcoming trip with husband josh it's often
37:11quoted as a dupe for hawaii but can it really give the feel of a long haul holiday for a fraction of the
37:18price we picked the azores mostly because of the wildlife and the greenery um i love whales and we
37:24knew that it's a great place to go whale watching it's also a great place to go if you want the
37:31destination vibes without the price tag a flight to honolulu can set you back almost three grand
37:39but flights to ponta delgada are 95 cheaper at less than 150 pounds and being in the atlantic off
37:47the coast of portugal means the azores are just four hours away a lot closer to home if you can't
37:56stand a long flight and you can't find the budget to go for hawaii i think it's a great in between
38:01the scenery and the wildlife and everything is priceless right
38:07that has got to be some kind of new record check-in only opened eight minutes ago and we are already
38:13through security london heathrow offers direct flights to the azores or if you want to stop over
38:20take a budget flight from your closest airport to lisbon and another low-cost flight to ponta delgada
38:28we have just arrived in the azores and the flights are about three and a half hours in the end and
38:34it's crazy that somewhere that feels so far removed from the uk is only a three and a bit hour flight
38:41but does it live up to the hype we're going out whale watching so so excited
38:50we just saw bird whales and the baby and now we're going on to look for some other species
39:03the deep sea canyons and nutrient-rich currents of the azores make it the perfect home for whales
39:10dolphins and other cetaceans with up to 28 different species recorded in its waters
39:16the north coast of the island and just look at the view it speaks for itself the volcanic nature
39:27of the islands combined with the temperate and humid atlantic climate is what helps create the stunning
39:33azores landscape not to mention the islands themselves are actually the top of huge mountains rising from
39:40the ocean floor so we have just had pancakes in the park and some local tea it came to about 26 euros
39:49for the pair of us so really affordable the average cost of a three course meal for two in ponta delgada
39:55is 40 euros compared to 102 dollars in honolulu even with the exchange rate when it comes to eating
40:04out the azores is half the price of hawaii it is absolutely stunning and i can fully see exactly
40:13why everyone says it's a duke from hawaii there's so much greenery the mountains it's absolutely beautiful
40:24with your plane fare taking up so much of the cost of a long-haul trip it's definitely worth thinking
40:30creatively about which airline you use or which destination you go to that way you can sit back
40:37relax and enjoy your well-earned break with a nice extra chunk of spending money
40:48coming up the latest trend to give your holiday a cinematic twist oh that was here
41:00there's a huge new trend that's transforming destinations across the world it's part of the
41:12new wave of tourism powered not by guidebooks but by screens have you ever wondered what it's like to
41:19cruise through the place where they filmed king kong many of us are choosing destinations inspired by our
41:26favorite films pp lake here we come tomorrow morning jack from belfast is in thailand where there are no
41:34shortage of blockbuster worthy beaches and it's absolutely amazing here it's been the location for
41:41films like bridget jones the edge of reason the beach and classic bond films the man with the golden gun
41:48and tomorrow never dies we made it james wonder island and it's amazing it's beautiful and the tour guide
41:57also told us that jurassic park has been shot here it's a trend so popular it's got its own name set
42:05jetting it's very early in the morning but there's loads of people already so i think it's going to be
42:12very busy today but the more famous a location is the busier it's likely to be so i would say
42:19if you're thinking about set jetting chances are you're going to have more fun the more obscure your
42:25tv show is because it's just something really niche you can do with family and friends and you know it's
42:32a great time you don't have to go too far for a set jetting experience there are plenty of hot spots
42:39all over europe movie fan john is in malta where surprisingly there are over 40 set jetting
42:46locations today we're in the ancient city of medina to do some game of thrones series one set jets
42:53john's visited over 170 locations across 20 different countries so here we are in a place
42:59where gladiator 2 was filmed where paul mescal runs up the steps to join the arena and here i go
43:06eric knacktreeb is behind a set jetters app connecting film locations to tourist boards
43:15producers and holiday makers how big is set jetting and film tourism it's been estimated to be in a 66
43:24billion dollar industry uh somewhere between 100 120 million people a year just visiting filming
43:30locations around the world any tips on how to choose a location to go set jetting one of the examples
43:38that you might think of is you know the high density of filming the area of new york that's expensive
43:43uh there are a lot of scenes but if you actually look at where most of the marvel films were shot
43:50it'd be in cleveland cleveland has a high density of filming locations it's a lot cheaper to travel to
43:57and experience than new york city the cost of filming in new york versus other big cities it
44:03means that some set jet destinations are actually closer than you think the street scenes for the
44:08latest spider-man movie brand new day had a surprising stand-in for new york glasgow and glasgow's
44:15also gotham city in dc films the batman and the flash and the location for indiana jones and the dial of destiny
44:27britain is home to many incredible set jetting locations and i've come to blenheim palace in
44:33oxfordshire to visit one myself from bridgerton oh that was here to napoleon and even harry potter
44:46blenheim palace has been featured in scores of films and tv shows over the years
44:51i met with head of operations emily spencer to learn about blenheim's set jetters
44:58we've definitely seen visitor numbers climbing over the last few years certainly after we have
45:03a large blockbuster film that comes out and it's connected to blenheim then we know we get inquiries
45:07and we know we get bookings off the back of that it's been dubbed the white lotus effect after both
45:14sicily and hawaii saw a 300 surge in tourism after the show and it's a hit with younger generations
45:22with a large percentage of gen z and millennials planning their trips based on film and tv locations
45:31do people ever come and try to sort of recreate a scene or take a picture in the spot where that
45:36character was definitely i think i've seen a little bit of sort of bollywood dancing in the middle of the
45:40great court a little bit of james bond action and and certainly we see people dressed up as bridgerton
45:45characters you've got people going around the palace and just suddenly you spot somebody going through
45:48in a bonnet and that makes our day as well stuck for inspiration for your next long haul holiday
45:57well take a look at your favorite movie or tv show and set jet go
46:27look at your favorite movie or tv show and set it up for your next time
46:32and see you soon
46:34yeah
