00:00I know that it looks trendy, so glad that it's not windy, here comes that girl named Donnie, ask if she wants to go, tonight's gonna be hot for sure, big guessing on the floor, folks stripping, I don't know, money flying everywhere, champagne, we won't go there, bottles popping in the air, they'll be screaming, I don't care.
00:30I know that it's not, but I don't know, it's not, I don't know, it's not, I don't know, it's not, I just hope my money tonight, I don't know, I bring it to life.
05:39My name is Okula Jones, entertainment editor here at Essence, and I'm really, really excited about this next panel.
05:46It's called Real Men Cook.
05:48This session will feature our diverse group of chefs, home cooks, and food enthusiasts who are redefining what it means to be a man in the kitchen.
05:57Our panelists will share their culinary journeys from their first experiences with cooking to becoming influencers and leaders in the culinary world.
06:05So I want y'all to put y'all to put your hands together and help me welcome Chef Chicken, Chef Gennard Wells, Omar Darcy, and Greg Tillery.
06:15Omar, what's going on?
06:25Omar, what's going on, brother?
06:35What's happening, bro?
06:36How you doing?
06:36Nice to meet you, man.
06:37Is that Shaheed over there?
06:42How y'all doing today, fellas?
06:48Good, good.
06:49Cool and cool.
06:51So, Chicken, I wanted to start with you, brother.
06:53I know me personally, like as a young boy, many times our mother, our grandmother would
06:59always tell us to get out the kitchen when they were cooking and everything, but your
07:02mother actually welcomed you into the kitchen as a taste test when you were young.
07:07Tell me, when exactly did your love for food begin, and can you pinpoint the moment when
07:11you wanted to make cooking your career?
07:16Food has been my spirit animal my entire life, you hear me?
07:21I am and live through the food.
07:23That's just been, as far as I can remember, an infatuation with it.
07:29As far as moving into it personally and really getting involved in it, it was something I
07:34stumbled into.
07:35Just being my life focus, since I'm such a large individual, starting off was playing
07:42ball.
07:43And one way when I was playing ball to save money was to cook.
07:47Every man drew the birth of social media and showing off what you're cooking is where I
07:52found the passion and found my talent, really.
07:56And my true focus could be in life, which is something that I focused on my whole life,
08:01which is food.
08:02That's dope, brother.
08:04Greg, congratulations on all your success, my brother.
08:06I've been watching you for a long time, man.
08:08And We That's has grown so much.
08:11You started with a food truck to having a physical business, and then you grew to a nationwide
08:15brand.
08:17How were you able to build your business from a local spot to a restaurant known nationwide?
08:22Point blank period.
08:24The city of New Orleans, the people that travel, you know, from near and far to come and support
08:30us, brothers like this brother that done put me in rooms, and we've had conversations that
08:37have gave us more exposure.
08:39So, you know, I mean, I'm nothing without the city of New Orleans and the people that
08:44support me.
08:44So, the reason why I'm even on this stage is because of the support of the city and everybody
08:49that support We That's.
08:50I love that.
08:52I love that.
08:53Omo, so I'm actually going to you now, my brother.
08:55I wanted to speak to you about the emotional aspect of cooking, man.
08:58Like, what feelings come to you, and what is special about being in the kitchen and being
09:03able to create for yourself and other people?
09:06You know what?
09:06It's the preparation, right?
09:08It's like a ritual.
09:10You know, I try to eat to be healthy.
09:12So, like, when I cook, I know what I'm putting in my stuff instead of, like, getting an Uber
09:18eat.
09:19Even though I love Greg food.
09:20Me and Greg, when I'm in the city, first person I call is Greg.
09:24I love you to that.
09:25Yeah, but, like, when I'm in my kitchen, I like to, it feels like, almost like, religious,
09:33you know?
09:33Because I know what I'm putting, I know what foods I'm putting inside of me, and I try,
09:37like I said, I try to be healthy.
09:39And it's a beautiful thing, you know what I'm saying?
09:43Chef Janard, what's going on, brother?
09:44What's up?
09:45What's up?
09:46So, you, as many of the folks up here, too, y'all are not just chefs, you're an entrepreneur,
09:51an author, and a host of the show, New Soul Kitchen.
09:55How did the opportunity for that show come about, and in what ways has it impacted your
09:59life and career?
10:01The opportunity of New Soul Kitchen really changed my life.
10:05But it came about from the creator of Cleo TV, Michelle Rice, who spearheaded it.
10:15And Cleo is for millennial women of color.
10:17But, of course, you always got to have a little male testosterone on that thing.
10:21But I've always been a lover of TV One and Cleo TV, and I thought it was so important when
10:28we came together to tell how we see food and why we love food, because I feel that we are
10:35the true creators of American cuisine as a whole.
10:39So, bridging into that and sharing the knowledge of the enrichment of our culture, because that's
10:45what it's really about, why we cook the way we cook.
10:48And Cleo TV and Michelle Rice, Brain Child, in this event, helping bring it to life, really
10:55just made all the difference in the world.
10:57And not to mention, my powerhouse production team are all phenomenal ladies, because I think
11:02every great man has great women behind them.
11:06And with that team behind me, it's helped take the show on to its fifth season now.
11:13So, this next question is actually for you, Greg, and you, Chicken, because you spoke about
11:17New Orleans.
11:18Yes.
11:18And I'm born and raised there, too, so I definitely understand.
11:21Facts.
11:21What part?
11:22Yes, yes.
11:23What part you said you're from?
11:24Seven Ward, all day.
11:25Oh, I'm from Seven Ward, too.
11:27Same one on the broad, brother.
11:28You hear me?
11:29Yeah.
11:29That's why I was born there.
11:31We here.
11:31We here.
11:32Yeah.
11:32So, I can start with you, Chicken.
11:34How would you describe New Orleans cuisine and living in a culinary hub such as New Orleans?
11:39How do you think it impacted your cooking style?
11:42Oh, just like I started this all with, food in New Orleans is life.
11:47You hear me?
11:47That's culture.
11:48That's our entire existence.
11:50That's our entire being.
11:51Everything we did, everything we do, we live through, it all starts with food.
11:56You hear me?
11:57That actually, the mark of whether you're going to show up to the party or not, it's
12:02depending on who's cooking and who's house is at.
12:04You hear me?
12:05So, that's in every five-man being of our existence, I believe.
12:09Greg, what you got, brother?
12:11Man, for me, to be honest with you, I've been doing this 10 plus years.
12:17So, one thing that I love about food, especially in New Orleans, is that it brings our entire
12:22city together.
12:23So, I mean, that's what we built on, the culture, the cuisine, you know, especially
12:31for Weed Acts, like, I know my clientele and I know the people that's coming in.
12:36So, I try to tell my team, every plate, every time has to be right.
12:43Because people, they're paying their part of doing what they need to do to give us the
12:52money to prepare the food.
12:55But if we're not doing what we're supposed to do, then it's a problem.
12:58So, it's like, me, when you see me and you come in the restaurant, you're going to see
13:03me in the kitchen, making sure that every plate, every time is right.
13:06So, for me, like, New Orleans got 3,000, 4,000 restaurants.
13:11So, how do you separate yourself from everybody else?
13:15And for me, it's customer service.
13:18So, I'm not going to tell nobody on my team to go clean the bathrooms if I ain't going
13:23to clean the bathrooms.
13:24When you see me, I'm behind the friars.
13:26I'm not in the front.
13:28I'm not politicking with everybody.
13:29I speak to everybody, but I'm making sure that the plates are right.
13:33So, I mean, New Orleans is just known for, like I said, the culture, the cuisine.
13:38We got some of the most talented people that came out of this city.
13:42So, I mean, for me, that's just my motto.
13:45That's my mission statement.
13:46That's how I'm running with it.
13:48What you about to say?
13:49Go ahead.
13:49What you about to say?
13:49Yo, go ahead.
13:50Go ahead.
13:50I was just noticing how many people was here supporting me just now.
13:53Because you can't really see with the lights on.
13:55I was just waving to my people.
13:56Yo, and the thing about it is, like, I live in L.A.
14:00I'm from Atlanta.
14:01I lived here for seven years.
14:04Yo, whenever I tell people I'm going to New Orleans, the first thing they talk about is
14:09the cuisine.
14:10That's the first thing they talk about.
14:12Oh, you about to eat good.
14:14Because it's something that y'all do out here.
14:17Y'all put the heart and soul into every goddamn plate.
14:21And I appreciate it, man.
14:22I love this city.
14:23I was damn near 300 pounds living in this goddamn city.
14:26My boy looking good, though.
14:28My boy looking good, though.
14:29That's what I told him.
14:30I had to leave.
14:32There's a secret to that, as I tell people.
14:35You can eat what you want as long as you're eating with a fork.
14:39The reason why is because all the calories fall through the cracks.
14:42Say no more.
14:43Hey, I didn't know that.
14:44That's a good one.
14:46That's good.
14:48That's dope.
14:48So, Chef Janard, in doing the other things outside of just being a chef, when do you feel
14:55that the time was right to, like, write a book and start selling your seasonings and stuff
14:58like that on the side?
15:00You know, there is no right or wrong time.
15:03You just have to make up your mind to do it.
15:04I wrote my first cookbook 15 years ago.
15:09It was a self-published book, and I felt that it was the best work.
15:12I started out, my pen name was The Chef of Love.
15:15I started writing love recipes because I knew food and love goes hand in hand.
15:21Facts.
15:21Listen, when you're asking to take someone out on the first date, what'd you say?
15:24Can I take you out to eat?
15:25Look, I didn't have a lot of money back then, but I knew how to cook.
15:29So, I felt that was a great segue to help people break into it, and so I just put pen
15:35and paper together and started creating all the recipes I learned from my father.
15:39I started cooking when I was 10 years old, and what pushed me into doing that was my
15:44mother had a heart-to-heart conversation.
15:46She said, Janard, you're not guaranteed to get married, and no lady is guaranteed to cook
15:51for you, and you can't live off of fast food.
15:53You better get in this kitchen and pay attention to learn how to cook.
15:55And I took that literally, and so happened I fell in love with it.
16:00My father was a chef as well, and that passion got to a point where it started paying my bills.
16:07And from there, I understood being a chef is a multifaceted job.
16:13People go to culinary school.
16:14People learn naturally, but becoming a chef, you have to understand just because I'm a chef
16:20doesn't mean I have to be in a restaurant, and I try to teach young chefs.
16:24There are so many ways to cook your way to the top.
16:27You walk through a grocery store.
16:28You go through the cereal aisle.
16:30You're seeing all these cereals, cornflakes, everything.
16:33There's a chef that created those recipes.
16:35You know, there's a chef that's writing food blogs.
16:38There's a chef.
16:39So learning that there are so many ways, and I understood I could break through doors
16:44and get in multiple houses by creating cookbooks.
16:48And so I did it, I started pitching it, and I landed the opportunity to get my first self-published
16:55book on Barnes & Noble shelves.
16:57And from there, I just kept doing it, and I decided, hey, now let me figure out how to
17:03learn how to manufacture and create my own product.
17:06So I launched my own manufacturing company because we have to understand we can control
17:12our destiny, and if you're willing to work hard for it, no one can stop you.
17:18Facts.
17:19Congratulations, brother.
17:20Congratulations, brother.
17:22So, Chicken, man, in 2022, your restaurant was selected by the New York Times, one of the
17:28top 50 restaurants in the entire country.
17:33That's dope, brother.
17:34And you, James, have been nominated.
17:35That's awesome.
17:35Congratulations.
17:37James, been nominated, too.
17:38How did it feel to have your food as well as your business highlighted on such a large
17:43platform like that?
17:44Still to the day, me sitting here and every recognition has been entirely unreal.
17:52You hear what I mean?
17:53Super appreciative.
17:54I mean, I know the work and the effort and the love I put into everything I do, but for
18:00it to be acknowledged and to be in places like this is unreal, you hear what I mean?
18:08It's just, it's special.
18:11It's special with all the dope.
18:14So, Omar, my brother, food...
18:17That's a blessing, bro.
18:18I'm going to say that.
18:19That's a blessing, bro.
18:19Congratulations, dog.
18:21It really is, brother.
18:22Food has been, like, pivotal to, I think, black families for a long, long time.
18:30You know, why do you think food in the kitchen continues to be such a powerful thing in black
18:35culture, and what is it about it that makes it special?
18:37You know, the thing about it, and I hate to go to history with it, but, like, the fact
18:43that, like, when we were, when we was on them plantations, we figured out how to get the
18:51scraps and to make it into gourmet, right?
18:55So, I feel like if we can figure that out from that time, it was passed on generational,
19:02generational, generational.
19:03That, like, no matter what, you put a Kobe beef in front of us, then we know we...
19:09It's the same as you put some chitlins in front of us, because we know how to doctor
19:14that thing up, you know, and, like I said, like, you know, we eat to live, you know, and
19:21if we can figure that out, we can figure it out from that point, then no matter what meat
19:29or vegetable or fruit that you put in front of us, we will make it into the greatest thing,
19:34because that's what we do.
19:35That's what black people do.
19:36Creativity.
19:36Yes.
19:37And I want to chime and add just another nugget to what you said, because, see, they only
19:45tell one side of the story.
19:47We know as slaves, we learn how to perfect all the chitlins, the hog moths, and everything,
19:52but what they left out is not only was we cooking in the field, but we was cooking in the big
19:57house.
19:58Yeah, for sure.
19:58And guess what?
19:59They was eating the best cuisine in the big house.
20:01No doubt.
20:01So we knew how to perfect the best, and we knew how to take the worst and make it good.
20:07So when they see us at the top of our game, it's not only because we took the worst and
20:12made it good, it was because we were already cooking the best as well.
20:16We know before us, they was eating chuckwagon and beanie weenies, bro.
20:20Facts.
20:21Facts.
20:22And the funny thing is, is that I was probably going to be the one back in the day in the
20:27kitchen.
20:28Exactly.
20:30So this next question is actually for all of y'all brothers.
20:33The food industry has changed so much in recent years.
20:37How has technology impacted how y'all run y'all business, and how do you use the internet
20:42and social media to help build y'all brands?
20:44I'm going to start with you, Chicken.
20:45Okay, I'm going to start first.
20:47Social media is in everything my business runs through.
20:52Back in 2022, before we got the New York Times recognition, our Instagram got hacked.
21:00And at the time, we were creeping towards 20,000 followers.
21:04But at the time, I was content with the flow of people we had.
21:07We was doing good business.
21:08And then that page got hacked, and people assumed, it's just off how the trend of how
21:13we posted, that we were closed and shut down.
21:16And for that first week, we lost $11,000.
21:20You hear me?
21:21And then from that, we had to just create a new Instagram page and just hit the pavement
21:26and keep engaging with people and creating new content to keep people's attention.
21:32Because we live in an era now where there's instant gratification and people's attention
21:38pains are super short.
21:40You hear me?
21:41Because there's so many things vying for the attention.
21:44You know what I mean?
21:44So just having an understanding of that, I just kept reengaging and keep reaching out to
21:50people and selling myself as well as an image of somebody you want to support.
21:55And now, two years later, from us being hacked now, we are knocking on the door, 100,000
22:01on Instagram.
22:03We got 220,000 on TikTok.
22:07And on Facebook, we're close to 102.
22:10So we got about 400,000 followers that we garnished over the last two years.
22:16And that also flipped the revenue in the business as well besides the New York Times.
22:23Because that's a fly-by night type of thing where you got the recognition, people show up,
22:30and you catch what you catch.
22:31But eventually, that story dies down.
22:34You know what I mean?
22:35But what social media does is give you an opportunity to keep reminding people that you
22:40exist.
22:41You know what I mean?
22:41Keep selling your product every day.
22:43We post daily to keep people engaging.
22:47No complaints on this side.
22:48We keep it laying out the door every day.
22:50You know what I mean?
22:51Yes, sir.
22:52And I would have to say with social media is also as being chefs, it helps us stay on
22:58top of what trends.
22:59Because the way we cooked five years ago, eight, ten years ago, we don't eat that way
23:04now.
23:04And so social media allows us to see in real time how the food trends, how the market
23:09is changing.
23:10Also, from the tech side, I always say from a business industry, I think that really helps
23:15because it helps us really scale on large scales and scale back monetary-wise.
23:22Because from a business standpoint, we can be the best chefs in the world in the kitchen.
23:27But if we don't have our business affairs in order, if we're not prepping, if we're not
23:32portioning right, that would still hurt our business.
23:35And I think technology really helps us scale a little bit better now than having to truly
23:39just crunch the numbers the way we did in the past.
23:43You know what?
23:44It's crazy because I think we were in Dallas.
23:48Yeah, we were in Dallas.
23:48Me and Greg were in Dallas.
23:50And we was with our homeboy Tom.
23:53Tom.
23:53Was doing a comedy special.
23:55And we was at the, all of us at the hotel.
23:57And I just remember this guy walked up to Greg, was like, we that's.
24:02We was in the airport.
24:02We was in the airport.
24:03We were in the airport and it was, I was like, yo, how do you know?
24:07He's like, yo, I know I'm from social media.
24:10Social media is, it opens the whole world up, right?
24:13So when you see that, you see that your reach is that heavy, like at a touch of a button.
24:20So that really like, really made me realize, that was like four or five years ago, it made
24:24me realize how big it is.
24:29Man, we got so many stories.
24:31A million.
24:32I let us do the debt.
24:34And I'm not just saying that.
24:37For me, I got, if you go to my social medias, at WeDats, I got like 21,000 posts.
24:45I'm burnt out from social media.
24:48I've been doing this a long time.
24:51I started on the food truck, from the food truck, expanded into locations.
24:56Before the pandemic, I had over 10 restaurants.
24:59We got CPG products, which is like seasonings and sauces and all that kind of stuff in grocery
25:06stores.
25:07So like, for me, I understand the value of what social media can do and what it can't do.
25:15And social media, you can, like how you said, instant gratification.
25:21It wasn't no instant gratification for me.
25:25This 10 years, going on 11 years in the game, doing this, starting on the food truck that
25:30I knew nothing about, I graduated from Tuskegee University with a sales and marketing degree.
25:38The only reason why I'm sitting on this stage is because the corporate company that I was
25:42working with did a company-wide layoff.
25:44And right then and there, I was like, I can't depend on this company to put a roof over my
25:50head and put food on my table, especially when I'm taking care of my family.
25:54So like, for me, like I was doing what I had to do.
25:59I was able to cook for so many different people.
26:02I mean, Omar can name some of the people that we was able, you could go on Instagram and
26:07see.
26:08But for me, I think social media right now is everything.
26:12But the thing about it is with social media, how I feel is that for some, for some businesses,
26:23it's reality.
26:25But for other businesses and for what other people are doing, it's self-destruction.
26:32So for me, like when I'm on a page, it's strictly directed towards getting people to come to
26:40Weed Acts because you got to understand, since the pandemic happened, everybody got restaurants
26:46now.
26:48Everybody's selling something now.
26:50Everybody is a brand.
26:53You got NBA, NFL, actors.
26:57We're going to get his own products so he can get in the grocery stores.
27:00But you got all of these people that are understanding that, guess what?
27:05I am a brand myself and I can do whatever it is that I want to do.
27:10So if Omar wants to come out with a seasoning, well, I'm going to connect Omar with the manufacturer
27:19to get Omar his own seasoning.
27:21I have the relationship with the grocery stores.
27:23We get Omar's seasoning on the shelves, but that's what we do.
27:27But that, going back to Weed Acts, which is the name of my corporation, 11 years ago when
27:34I created it, it's always been a together thing for me.
27:38And a lot of people in the city, influencers that you see that's doing big things, they
27:43first pop-up shops was at Weed Acts on Canal Street.
27:46So for me, whatever I can do, like I love to throw assists.
27:53Like, you know, I don't need to be, I could be in the background, but I love to, if I can
27:58help you, I'm going to help you.
27:59Because guess what?
28:00I believe in planting seeds.
28:03So when you plant those seeds, it might manifest right now.
28:07It may take 10 years from now.
28:10I've been doing this for 10 years.
28:11And guess what?
28:12Now I'm on the stage with y'all gentlemen.
28:14You know what I'm saying?
28:15So I just said that to say this, that, and this is one of the things that I really wanted
28:20people to understand because there's a lot of people that want to do a lot of things,
28:25but us as black people, and I know I'm light-skinned.
28:28You know what I'm saying?
28:29I know I'm like, I know I'm like, with us as black people, what we lack is not the financial
28:38part.
28:39We lack the knowledge.
28:41And if we just stick together, rest in peace to George Floyd, I got a chance to speak
28:47with him, well not speak with him, but speak to, have a speaking engagement with his brother
28:54Phil Floyd.
28:55And it's just like, around that movement, it showed how strong black people were together.
29:01And it was kind of like back in the 60s when we was all together.
29:05So it's like, I feel like if we come together, we don't have that crab in the bucket mentality.
29:13We support each other.
29:14We spread the knowledge.
29:16We give, like, what I give you is not going to affect me.
29:20So it's like, I said all of that to say, because I wanted to get that out.
29:25If you have a dream, if you have something that you want to do, it don't matter what the
29:30idea is.
29:31Like, look at all of the stuff that's selling on the internet.
29:35Like, look at everything that's selling on the internet.
29:37That people be like, damn, I didn't even know nothing like this existed.
29:51But it's like, guess what?
29:53If you have an idea, don't let nobody tell you that that idea is not, it's not going to
29:59work.
29:59Like, it ain't going to do that.
30:01Because I had so many people say, well, why are you leaving, working your corporate job
30:05with benefits and insurance and all of this and starting a food truck that you know nothing
30:09about?
30:10It's because, guess what?
30:11At the end of the day, whatever I put my mind to, whatever I put my heart to, whatever
30:16God put on my spirit to do, I'm going to do.
30:20And he's going to make a way.
30:22It might be a lot of trials and tribulations that come with that.
30:25And I know we ain't got enough time to talk about all my trials and tribulations.
30:28Over the last 10 years, but eventually, if you stay consistent and you keep doing what
30:34you're doing, guess what?
30:36You're going to grow up and you're going to be, everybody in the world is going to know
30:40who you are.
30:41I didn't even know you got acknowledged like that.
30:43That's amazing, dog.
30:45That's amazing, especially coming from a city like New Orleans, bro.
30:48That's amazing because you're competing with how many restaurants we have down here?
30:523,000, 4,000?
30:54So you separated yourself from everybody else, bro, and I just want to tell you, from the
31:00last panel we spoke on, about a year ago, I'm proud of you, bro, and keep on going.
31:06Thank you, bro.
31:06I appreciate it.
31:07I appreciate it.
31:08There's a saying for that.
31:10How can you learn how to walk on water if you never get out the boat?
31:14And that's the key.
31:15We got to step out, step out on faith.
31:17It doesn't matter if you've never done it before, if you've never experienced it.
31:21Be the first to do it.
31:22Be the change.
31:23Facts.
31:24This was a beautiful, beautiful conversation.
31:27I want y'all to put your hands together for Greg Tellery, Omar Dorsey, Chef Jonard, and
31:32Chef Chicken, man.
31:34And look, and look, I'll be remiss if I didn't say this.
31:38If you're from California, we just opened up a location with Mr. Matthew Bonds.
31:44In Gardena.
31:45In Gardena.
31:46And also, if you're in the New Orleans East location, my brother Currency, the high spitter,
31:53if you're familiar with him, we have a location every Wednesday.
31:57We do wheels and wings, nothing but old school cars, good food, good vibes, DJs, all of that.
32:05Y'all make sure y'all come out.
32:06Y'all come support.
32:07And we got a location right there on Canal Street, 1407 Canal Street.
32:11We open until 2 o'clock in the morning, tonight and tomorrow, so y'all come get y'all some food.
32:17And thank you guys once again for continuing to support me watching New Soul Kitchen and
32:21New Soul Kitchen Remix.
32:23And if you enjoy those, guys, this year, check out TV One.
32:27I got a new show coming out, Savor the City with Chef Jonard.
32:31I'm highlighting some of the best restaurants around the world.
32:35I'm talking about New Orleans, California, the Caribbean islands, Africa, you name it.
32:41It's about us, for us.
32:42It's time for our stories to be told and be highlighted.
32:46And I'm bringing it to you in the purest form of how we like it and how we see it.
33:23All right, y'all.
33:41Thank you for joining us for Real Man Cook one more time.
33:43Swayman's experience.
33:44Shout out to my man, Oprah.
33:45Listen, make sure you stick around.
33:47We got a lot more panels coming up for my fellas.
33:49Also, the ladies hanging out with us.
33:51I'm Josh J.
33:52And if you stop sweating on my knees, girl, they just won't stop shaking.
33:56My stomach is turning, flips, and I feel sick, you see.
34:00And this is all just at the thought of you leaving me.
34:04Baby, you're a fool.
34:05Am I stupid?
34:07Baby, I'm a beast.
34:08Addicted to it.
34:09Baby, I don't know.
34:10But you all might get right when it's wrong.
34:14Baby, it's your smile.
34:15Makes me happy.
34:16Baby, it's your soul.
34:17So relaxing.
34:19Whatever it is.
34:20Without it, I just can't go on.
34:23You know that.
34:24I just can't help myself.
34:26I just can't help myself.
34:29I don't need nothing else.
34:31All I need is you.
34:33Why don't you just stay with me?
34:35Why don't you just stay with me?
34:38That's right, y'all.
34:38Make sure you stick around.
34:39We got a lot more coming up right here.
34:41Sway means experience, right, Essence Fest.
34:43Celebrating 30 years.
34:44See myself with only you.
34:47Finally found my inspiration.
34:49Hear your voices.
34:50Baby, ooh.
34:52Anything I got you.
34:54What you want, indeed I'll be.
34:56Good, you are my everything.
34:58So baby, please just stay with me.
35:02Am I stupid?
35:04Baby, I'm addicted to it.
35:07I don't know.
35:08But you're my gift, right, and it's wrong.
35:11Baby, it's just one.
35:12Make me happy.
35:14Baby, it's just one.
35:15So relaxing.
35:16Hey, without you, I just can't go on.
35:21B-I-Z to the ball is my name.
35:24Baby, the old baby, you is my fame.
35:26Still in the game like a G.I. Joe?
35:29Chicks still say he's the star of the show.
35:31It's been a long while, but don't get it twisted.
35:33I still got flavor like Snapple and Mystic.
35:36As I get ballistic, playtime is over.
35:38Now it's time to hit my man, Mario.
35:41I want to know your name, man.
35:43I want to know if you got a man.
35:45I want to know.
35:46I want to know everything.
35:47I want to know your number and if I can come over and.
35:51I want to know what you like.
35:52I want to know so I can do it all night.
35:55But you're telling me I'm just a friend.
35:57You're telling me I'm just a friend.
35:59Oh, baby, you got what I need.
36:03But you say I'm just a friend.
36:06But you say I'm just a friend.
36:16I want to know you in and out.
36:21I want to know what you are about.
36:23I want to know.
36:24I want to know what makes you laugh, I want to know about your past
36:28I want to know how you move, I want to know so I can move to
36:32What up, what up, what up y'all, how you feeling, how's it going?
36:54Yo, what up, what up, let me get a little call and response
37:01Get it in, get it in
37:02Let me try a little, God is good, all the time
37:07All the time, God is good
37:09A little, God is good, all the time
37:13God is good, no justice, no peace
37:16No justice, no peace
37:18No justice, no peace
37:20Yeah, that's what I'm talking about
37:23Okay, just make it
37:24Hallelujah
37:24So, yeah, my name is Kendrick Sampson
37:31I am an actor
37:33I am a filmmaker, storyteller
37:36And also run an organization called Build Power
37:41Where we reimagine and realize the liberated future
37:45We know our people deserve
37:48And I'm sitting here with the homie
37:51One of my good, good, good homies that I've traveled around the country with
37:56Phillip Agnew
37:59Phil Agnew is an incredible leader
38:01And has a really dope organization called Black Men Build
38:06He's the co-director of Black Men Build
38:09Can you talk to us a little bit about that?
38:11Let me tell you something, though
38:12Before you, before you
38:13Go ahead, go ahead
38:14What you about to do, though?
38:14Okay, so, I am, you know
38:17I'm going to be real with y'all
38:19There was no introduction
38:20And I don't know what the hell is going on
38:22So, if y'all don't know me
38:23I've been on several projects
38:26Insecure
38:27One of my favorite
38:29Miss Juneteenth
38:31You know, how to get away with murder
38:33Vampire diary
38:34Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
38:35I hate going through my resume
38:36But, the more important thing is
38:39Black people have to deal with so much more
38:42Even when we're in this position
38:43And a lot of what we've done
38:46Is take on the work of organizations
38:48And radical organizers
38:50That are really dedicated to black liberation
38:52To guide our work
38:54In Hollywood
38:55In filmmaking
38:56In art
38:57But also in the streets with our community
38:59And how to build community
39:00One of my
39:01One of the people that I look up to most
39:04That I get
39:05I get guidance from
39:07And my values from
39:08And analysis
39:09And interpretation from
39:11Is this man right here
39:13He is
39:13I aspire to be like him
39:15He is a really incredible community builder
39:18And somebody who cares about us
39:20In a radical way
39:21That he shows up every day
39:24To figure out how to care for us better
39:26And I want to make sure that I'm
39:28Instilling those values
39:29In the people
39:30In my family
39:31My community
39:31And in my work
39:33So that is why
39:34I love this dude so much
39:35He's taught me a lot
39:36And I'm going to get him
39:38To talk a little bit
39:39About his work
39:39At Black Men Build
39:41Thank you
39:42Y'all give it up for Kendrick
39:43Give it up for Kendrick
39:44Come on
39:44Y'all can do better than that
39:45My name is Phil Agnew
39:50I'm very excited to be here with y'all
39:51We don't have a very
39:53A long time today
39:54To talk to you
39:55But
39:56I'm a native of Chicago, Illinois
39:58Anybody from Chicago?
40:00Chicago
40:01Shot Town
40:01Southside
40:02West Inglewood
40:03Yep
40:03I went to Beasley
40:04And Whitney Young
40:05Okay
40:05Whitney Young
40:07Dolphins
40:07Alright
40:08What's good?
40:09So I currently live in Miami, Florida
40:11Twelve years ago
40:13I helped to start an organization
40:14Called the Dream Defenders
40:15After the Murder of Trayvon Martin
40:17And in 2020
40:19I helped to start an organization
40:20Called Black Men Build
40:21The goal of the organization
40:23Is to bring more brothers
40:25In a closer communion
40:26With ourselves
40:27And with our community
40:28We believe that the times
40:30That we're in right now
40:31Are very critical times
40:33A crisis time
40:35And we believe that
40:37If our brothers
40:37Are just on the sidelines
40:39Saying all politics is for them
40:41Or just kicking it
40:42Or just going to work
40:44And going home
40:45Or numbed out
40:46That we are not meeting
40:48The moment in the way
40:48That we can
40:49And so we started
40:50This organization
40:51With the express purpose
40:52Of bringing more black men
40:54Into our movement space
40:55Why?
40:56Why?
40:56Because
40:58The sisters is doing it
40:59And I'm not just doing it
41:02To play to the audience
41:03As I've been a part
41:04Of the movement now
41:05For my entire adult life
41:07It is women
41:08It's femmes
41:09Who have always been in the paint
41:10Always been doing it
41:12And our brothers are there
41:14We ready for the call
41:15We like call me if you need me
41:17They arrest you
41:17They put their hands on you
41:18We gonna fuck them up
41:19But we need more brothers
41:21Who are ready to
41:22Do the work of transforming
41:23To do the work
41:25Of being partners
41:26Of lovers
41:27And supporters
41:28Of our people
41:28In a way that
41:30Our forefathers have
41:31And that is required today
41:32And so that's why
41:34We have our organization
41:35We have chapters
41:35All over the country
41:36We're starting a chapter
41:38Here in New Orleans
41:39We got one in Miami
41:40In Atlanta
41:41St. Louis
41:41Los Angeles
41:42Milwaukee
41:42Columbus
41:43New York
41:44And I said Atlanta
41:45We need two in Atlanta
41:46And we love to have y'all
41:48Be a part
41:49And I'm excited to talk
41:50To y'all more
41:50About what we do
41:51I love that
41:52I love that
41:53Yeah
41:53And something
41:54You know
41:55Talk a little bit
41:56About how you do that
41:58So something
41:59I really love
42:01You know
42:01What do you love?
42:03Something I really love
42:04About the way y'all go about it
42:05Is you make it
42:06Really approachable
42:07Like really digestible
42:09I hate going to
42:10A lot of
42:11Social justice events
42:13And they use these big words
42:15I'm gonna be real with y'all
42:16It took me a long time
42:17To get through school
42:18A little bit longer
42:19Than everybody else
42:20So I don't
42:21The big words
42:22Confuse me sometimes
42:23And make me
42:24You know
42:24Want to quit reading
42:25That thing
42:27Or understanding that thing
42:29It's another obstacle
42:30And I think the way
42:32That y'all have done it
42:33Through you know
42:35War time
42:35Which you know
42:36I'd love for you
42:37To talk about
42:38Okay
42:38And some of the content
42:40That you put out
42:41Some of the language
42:43That you use
42:44And your style
42:46To approaching
42:47Black men
42:48In a way
42:48That they can digest
42:50The information
42:51Coming to them
42:51Without feeling like
42:52They're being preached to
42:53Or you know
42:54Like it's a school
42:55You know
42:56A course that they
42:57Don't want to take
42:58Can you talk a little bit
42:59More about that
42:59So for all the brothers
43:00In here
43:01And sisters
43:01As well
43:02We do men's circles
43:03And women's circles
43:04So the organization
43:05Is not just for men
43:07And only about men
43:08But for any of the brothers
43:09In here
43:10I didn't used to know
43:13The shits
43:13You know
43:14I had to go to the class
43:15I had to learn
43:16I had to pick up
43:17Some of the language
43:18And the lingo
43:18I'd still be mispronouncing shit
43:20But at the end of the day
43:22Our ignorance about
43:24What is going on
43:24Is not an excuse
43:25If you all
43:27If for us
43:29We believe that
43:30If we're not approachable
43:32If we're not building
43:34Something that is
43:34Frankly irresistible
43:36We love the Black Panthers
43:38Not just because
43:39Of their rhetoric
43:39But because of what
43:40They look cool
43:42They had the beret
43:43None of them
43:44Ain't none of them paint
43:46But they had berets
43:47They had leather jackets
43:49They had the lineups
43:51They look good
43:51The sisters
43:52My God
43:53Even still to this day
43:54They look amazing
43:55And so we believe
43:57That it's our duty
43:58As a movement
43:59To make the revolution
44:00Irresistible
44:00And so we create things
44:02That speak in plain language
44:04We don't need to be verbose
44:06And loquacious
44:06Right
44:07We can be very very simple
44:09When you go to church
44:10What they say
44:10Make it what
44:11Make it plain
44:12Make it plain
44:13And so we have magazines
44:15That we put out
44:16This is a very
44:17This is not a
44:18This is a shameless plug
44:19This is our magazine
44:20That we put out
44:21We put one out
44:23Every few months
44:24And we'll have some
44:25Some brothers here
44:26We got a gang of brothers
44:27In plain clothes
44:28In here
44:28And they gonna give y'all
44:30Magazines and flyers
44:31But we have these magazines
44:33And we do these workshops
44:34Because we want people
44:36To really understand
44:37The things that we are up against
44:38And I'll wrap it up here
44:39The conflict that we're seeing
44:42Currently in Palestine
44:44What we see occurring
44:46In Sudan
44:46In the Congo
44:48In Haiti
44:49All over South Africa
44:51All over South America
44:53What we see happening
44:54In our world
44:54Is not complex
44:56What they try to do
44:58Is they try to tell you
44:59No you just don't fully
45:00Understand what's going on
45:01You don't know the history
45:02Right
45:02Oh no if you understand
45:04If you just read
45:04No
45:05We know as black people
45:07What is right
45:07And what is wrong
45:08Yeah
45:09You can feel it in your bone
45:10And your sinew
45:11You can feel it in you
45:12When something just ain't right
45:14You can smell it
45:14Yeah
45:15When you walk in a room
45:16When an argument just happened
45:17You know something is not right
45:19And so what they try to do
45:20Is intellectualize issues
45:22That you can feel in your bones
45:24And they want you to be numbed out
45:26They want you to say
45:27No I'm not going to speak up
45:28On that because
45:29You know I didn't read the article
45:31You don't need the article
45:33To know what is right and wrong
45:34And so that's where we come from
45:35As movement people
45:37We want black people to remember
45:39That we have always been
45:40The moral compass of this country
45:42And never had one
45:44And never will
45:44Without black people
45:45And so we have to remember that
45:47And speak up
45:48Whenever something
45:48The shit don't smell right
45:50Absolutely
45:51Yeah y'all can clap for that
45:53Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
45:54If y'all don't
45:56Good question
45:56Make sure y'all go to
45:57Black Men Build
45:58Website
46:00And check out
46:02War Time
46:03When I tell y'all
46:03The images
46:04The articles
46:05The stories
46:07They have
46:08It is the layout
46:11Everything is incredible
46:12It's an artwork
46:13And it's transformative
46:15When you read it
46:16You want to read it
46:17Because it's engaging
46:18It looks good
46:19And it's us
46:20It's us unapologetically
46:22I love the one
46:24With the blue braids
46:25And the blue do-rag
46:26And there's so many
46:27Really incredible
46:28Images and covers to these
46:31And I'm inspired by them
46:33To take that type of art
46:35Into my work
46:35Yeah let me
46:36We got ten minutes left
46:37We got a timer here
46:38Okay so look Kendrick
46:40He's supposed to be
46:41Interviewing me
46:42Believe it or not
46:43But let me ask you
46:46A question real quick
46:47Kendrick is an incredible actor
46:49Thespian
46:50Right
46:50Come on now
46:53Come on
46:54Yes
46:55Alright
46:56And this is absolutely
46:58No shade
46:58I believe in living in the sun
47:01But there's a lot of people
47:03In your position
47:03Who don't speak up
47:04There's a lot of people
47:06Who encourage people
47:07Not to speak up
47:08Right
47:08Why have you chosen
47:11To put your career
47:13Put your access
47:14Your opportunity
47:15On the line
47:17In support of black people
47:18Why do you do that
47:18I think that
47:20I think there's
47:23I was just talking about this
47:25We were just talking about this
47:26To some kids
47:27I think Hollywood
47:28Has done a number on us
47:30And America
47:30Has done a number on us
47:32To think that we
47:33Should compete
47:34And be grateful for scraps
47:36And I'm looking at
47:39Like a very simple
47:41Logic behind that
47:42If you look at LA
47:43LA is the second largest city
47:46In the country
47:47With like 12 million people
47:49A hundred years ago
47:51When Hollywood started
47:53A hundred years ago
47:53It's not that far
47:55Away
47:56It was only
47:58600,000 people
47:59What built up that city
48:01Was the economy
48:03Of culture
48:04Stories
48:05That they make us think
48:07Are hobbies
48:08They make us think
48:10That we are
48:11That our talent
48:12Is like a pastime
48:14Something fun to do
48:15An extracurricular activity
48:18But what's real about it
48:20If you go all the way
48:21Back to the Griots
48:22In West Africa
48:23If you go back
48:24To the original artists
48:26And storytellers
48:26Storytellers
48:27They were the
48:28Central pillars
48:29Of the community
48:30They buried them
48:32In trees
48:33Above ground
48:33In the Baobab trees
48:35Because they knew
48:36That they could
48:36Withstand any storm
48:37And if they buried
48:39Our stories
48:39If they buried
48:40The Griots
48:41They knew that
48:42They were burying
48:42Our stories
48:43They said
48:43We don't want
48:44To bury our stories
48:45We want to
48:45Nourish our stories
48:46So they built them
48:48In the strongest trees
48:49The Baobab trees
48:50Because they could
48:51Withstand any storm
48:52And they could
48:53Withhold water
48:54For long periods
48:55Of time
48:56To nourish those stories
48:57I think Hollywood
48:59Has done a number
48:59On us
49:00To make us
49:00Not believe
49:01Or make
49:02Disconnect us
49:03From the fact
49:03And the purpose
49:04Of our stories
49:05And our art
49:05It is something
49:07That informs our soul
49:08Something that pushes us
49:10Beyond and makes us
49:11Understand beyond words
49:13And statistics
49:14It connects the dots
49:16For us when we're like
49:17Something don't make sense
49:18You get what I'm saying
49:20Come on
49:20It is not
49:21Art is central
49:22To our communities
49:23And our health
49:25And when other people
49:26Take our stories
49:27And tell our stories
49:28For us
49:29We become less healthy
49:31They do it
49:32In an inauthentic way
49:33In a harmful way
49:34And they paint a picture
49:35Of us that justifies
49:37Other people
49:38It's like talking
49:39About family
49:40It's like letting
49:40Somebody else
49:41Talk about your family
49:42Somebody else
49:43Talk about your family
49:44That means
49:45They're signaling
49:46To somebody else
49:47That they could talk
49:48About your family too
49:49And that they don't
49:50Have to be accurate
49:51About it
49:51So what we need
49:52To start saying
49:53Is nah
49:53You don't get
49:54To tell our story
49:55You get what I'm saying
49:56We're gonna tell our story
49:58The reason that I do this
50:01Is because I understand
50:02How the purpose
50:03Of the art works
50:05If they tell our stories
50:07It becomes more harmful
50:09To our communities
50:10And we've seen
50:10The direct impact of that
50:12So I can't just be an actor
50:13I can't just be
50:15Just be an artist
50:16That's not ever
50:17What acting and art
50:19Has been
50:20Art has always been
50:21More purposeful
50:22It's not about
50:23You know
50:24People saying
50:24Shut up and do what you do
50:26That is what I do
50:27That's what we're supposed to
50:29Come on
50:29Come on
50:29It's supposed to be
50:30About
50:31Like you said
50:31Art is supposed to
50:33Make the
50:33Tony K Bambara
50:34Right
50:35She said
50:36That the
50:37Purpose of art
50:39Is to make
50:40The revolution
50:40Irresistible
50:42I think we need
50:44To take that on more
50:45And for
50:46Right now
50:47In this moment
50:48And I would love
50:48For you to talk
50:49A bit more
50:50About this moment
50:50With the five minutes
50:52That we have left
50:52We have six minutes
50:53And 38 seconds
50:54But in this moment
50:55You know
50:56I want to
50:57Our organization
50:59Is called
50:59Build Power
51:00Make sure y'all
51:01Go buildpower.com
51:02Check it out
51:03And build power
51:04On BLDPWR
51:06On Instagram
51:08But we're talking about
51:10We're trying to
51:11Reorient black people's
51:13Relationship with power
51:15So the black power
51:16Movement was about
51:17Going after power
51:18Apologetically
51:19Because back then
51:20We were ashamed to say
51:21We were scared to say
51:23That we deserve power
51:24And we're going to
51:26Take our power
51:27You get what I'm saying
51:28We're going to
51:28Utilize our power
51:29It was about
51:30Making sure that
51:31We're unapologetic
51:32About black power
51:33That black people
51:35Deserve power
51:35Specifically
51:36And that they are
51:37Taking our resources
51:39And then telling us
51:40That we're not powerful
51:41They're stealing from us
51:42And then telling us
51:43That we're not power
51:43They're trying to
51:44Use and exploit our power
51:46So right now
51:47We've gotten to
51:48That position again
51:49We've forgotten
51:50What the purpose
51:51Of the black power
51:52Movement is
51:53And what we want to do
51:56Is make sure that
51:57People understand
51:57That politics is not power
51:59Politics is what's
52:01Between us
52:02And the change
52:03That we deserve
52:04That's the foolishness
52:07That we have to deal with
52:08To come to a consensus
52:10About the vision
52:11That we should be
52:12Fighting for
52:13Right
52:13So we participate
52:15In politics as a tool
52:17But we are the power
52:18We are the power
52:20And each one of us
52:21Has the same power
52:22As the next
52:23So when we combine
52:24That power
52:25If three of us get
52:26If I have power
52:27And I can use
52:2824 hours in a day
52:29To exercise my power
52:30You can too
52:31You can too
52:32Right
52:32Now we get
52:33Three of us together
52:34We have three times
52:35As much power
52:36Right
52:36Come on now
52:37That's what we're trying
52:38To get people to understand
52:40That the politicians
52:41Are not the powerful ones
52:43They still have
52:4424 hours in a day
52:45And they're only one person
52:46A team of people
52:47Right
52:47They are supposed to be
52:50Deferential to our power
52:51They're supposed to represent
52:53And honor our power
52:55So we have to think about
52:56How we engage
52:57In this moment differently
52:58And thinking about
53:00Who is going to be
53:01More deferential to our power
53:03Who can we influence more
53:05Who is going to listen
53:06And I'm not saying
53:07That they're going to listen
53:08In the way that we want
53:09To listen to
53:10But who can we challenge
53:12And effectively move
53:13On issues that are going
53:14To affect our communities
53:16Right
53:16So can you talk a bit
53:18More about that
53:19In this moment
53:20How we exercise
53:21What is power
53:22In this moment
53:23And how do we exercise
53:24That power
53:26With the foolishness
53:27That we got going on
53:28I mean this is some bullshit
53:30I ain't even going to lie to y'all
53:31Every day I'm stressed out
53:33My butt is clenched up tight
53:35Because I'm like
53:36I don't know what's going
53:37To drop next
53:37How many people have been
53:38Killed in Gaza
53:39Congo
53:40Yeah
53:40This is old
53:41These are old stories
53:42And conversation
53:43I love how he cooked the meal
53:45Just chef the meal
53:47And then said
53:48Now what you got to add
53:50You already said it
53:50You already said it
53:52Shout out them shorts
53:53Look
53:54Look
53:54We've been doing this
53:55A long time
53:56Me and him
53:56Been all over
53:57Look
53:57So look
53:59We only have a brief time
54:00And really
54:01All jokes aside
54:02My brother Kendrick
54:03Eloquently laid out
54:04The position before us
54:06The only solution
54:08That we have
54:09Out of this quagmire
54:11We find ourselves in
54:12Is to be organized
54:14Is to be organized
54:16People don't understand
54:18The type of millions
54:20And billions of dollars
54:21That is spent
54:22To make sure
54:23That the people in this room
54:24Are disorganized
54:26Right
54:26The millions of dollars
54:29That's spent
54:29To make sure
54:30That I don't see
54:31Another brother
54:32As a brother
54:32I see him as an op
54:33Right
54:34You live on 112
54:36I live on 111
54:38We don't bang
54:38Right
54:39The type of investment
54:41That's put on podcasts
54:42Whether
54:44I'ma just do it
54:45Fresh and fit
54:45All of these podcasts
54:47That are
54:48Putting forth
54:49A narrative
54:49That says
54:50That black women
54:51And black men
54:51Can't get along
54:52That we don't need
54:54To be organized
54:55We don't need
54:55To work together
54:56Collectively
54:57That we're born
54:58To be competitive
54:59Dog-eat-dog people
55:00Dogs don't eat dogs
55:01I don't even know
55:02Where it came from
55:03Right
55:03So the only opportunity
55:05That we have
55:06To make it out
55:07Of this moment
55:07Is to be organized
55:08My sole goal
55:10In being here
55:11With you all
55:11This afternoon
55:12Is to talk to y'all
55:14About joining an organization
55:16It doesn't have to be mine
55:18But if you leave here
55:20And all you did
55:21Was buy some new
55:22Hair care products
55:23Or you got
55:25A nice little shirt
55:27To bring home
55:28If all you did
55:29Was that
55:30You had a good time
55:31But if you want
55:31Your money's worth
55:32Coming to a gathering
55:34That proclaims itself
55:35To be
55:36By and about
55:37Black people
55:38And you don't
55:39Leave here
55:39And say
55:40I gotta
55:40Connect with my sister
55:41Or my brother
55:42When I get to the crib
55:43And tell them
55:44We need to go
55:45We need to vote
55:46Or we need to show up
55:47To a meeting
55:48I know
55:48I know how I sound
55:49To some of y'all
55:50Like man
55:50Why did I stick around
55:51For this bullshit
55:52I didn't know you
55:53Look
55:54Our world right now
55:56Is crumbling
55:57It is absolutely crumbling
56:00And we're watching it
56:01And we're telling ourselves
56:02No it's not
56:03No I can't see these two
56:05No this man is not about to die
56:06And this man is not a lunatic
56:08We are watching our world crumble
56:10And so I would love
56:12If you're a brother in here
56:13You come talk to us
56:15About Black Men Build
56:16We'll build a chapter
56:17With you in your city
56:18And we'll talk about
56:19What it takes to build a campaign
56:21To defeat somebody
56:22Who don't listen
56:23To put somebody
56:24That looks like you
56:25In that office
56:26To make sure they run
56:27The city
56:28The county
56:28The neighborhood
56:29Your district
56:30The way that it's supposed
56:31To be run
56:31Our people are gonna be dying
56:33In record numbers
56:34In the next few years
56:35There's no water
56:37There's no food
56:38There's no jobs
56:39And unless we wake up
56:42And get organized
56:43And do something about it
56:45Then we have wasted our time
56:47We are absolutely
56:48Wasting our time on foolery
56:50I'm gonna be out there
56:51With y'all tonight
56:52I'm gonna have fun
56:52Tonight and tomorrow night
56:54Cause it's a balance
56:56But absolutely
56:58My goal in being here
57:00Wasn't that
57:01It's to see y'all
57:02See brothers in here
57:03That wanna do something more
57:04Than just kill ourselves
57:05Be depressed
57:06Be sad
57:07Don't be in touch
57:08With your feelings
57:08Silent all the time
57:10That's not a way to live
57:12That's not a way to be a man
57:13That's not a way to be a human being
57:14So join Black Men Build
57:16Join the NAACP
57:18If you got to
57:18They old
57:19But just join the NAACP
57:20I love them
57:21I love them
57:22Absolutely
57:22Axo
57:23I was an Axo
57:24Alright
57:25Join
57:25Get up with your links
57:26I'm an alpha

57:31For not doing enough
57:32Call out the AKs
57:33For not doing enough
57:34We gotta wake up
57:35And do something right now
57:36Okay
57:37It's war time
57:39And we wanna get y'all
57:40A magazine
57:40I know I yelled at y'all enough
57:42But I wanna leave y'all
57:43With this
57:43All power to the people
57:44Go ahead
57:45All power to the people
57:47All power to the people
57:48Come on now
57:48All love to the people
57:50All love to the people
57:51All love to the people
57:52All love to the people
57:53All peace to the people
57:54All peace to the people
57:55All peace to the people
57:57All peace to the people
57:57It used to be a time
57:58That sounded so sweet to us
58:00Right
58:00Now it's that corny shit
58:01But at the end of the day
58:03If we don't have power
58:04Love and peace
58:05Our people are gone
58:06That's it
58:08That's right
