04:47I'm the Senior Vice President of Creative
04:49Here at Essence Ventures
04:51And I'm really excited about this conversation
04:54That we're about to have
04:55Around men's fashion
04:56And the current state of the industry
04:58So I'll start off by introducing our panelists
05:04First, we have
05:05Dex Robb, style coach
05:08I mean, sorry
05:10Dex Robb, athlete stylist and designer
05:14We have Alexander Julian
05:17Creative director and stylist
05:19And we have Alan Onia, style coach

05:35You guys look great, of course
05:37So
05:39I gave a bit of an introduction
05:42Into
05:43Who you guys are
05:45From a title perspective
05:47And we're having this conversation
05:49About menswear
05:51And how you
05:51Create your own lane
05:54And I think the three of you
05:55Are really great representations of that
05:57Dex
05:59You started off
06:01Well, I don't know if this is
06:02What you started off as
06:03But you were a stylist for athletes
06:07At a time when it wasn't
06:09When I don't think athletes
06:11Were getting the recognition
06:12That they do now
06:15In terms of style
06:17And I think you are one of the individuals
06:18That really helped push that to the forefront
06:21And really created a lane for that
06:25And so I would love to hear from you
06:29Really how that came to be
06:32And how you kind of like
06:33Had that idea
06:34To really focus
06:35And prioritize
06:36Athletes in your work
06:38Okay
06:38How y'all doing?
06:44So originally
06:45I actually was an editorial stylist
06:47By trade
06:48So upon graduating
06:50I moved to New York
06:51I assisted a few individuals
06:52In the editorial space
06:53And I worked in PR
06:55I was an athlete through college
06:57And that kind of was my connection
06:59To sports
07:00Okay
07:00And where I grew up in Virginia
07:02A lot of my childhood friends
07:04Ended up going to the league
07:05And I just moved to New York
07:06And they wanted to figure out
07:07A way that we could build
07:08And fashion
07:09Since that had been my thing
07:10Even back home
07:12In such a small town
07:13Where I live
07:14It was like
07:15Well, it was only natural
07:17That I would connect
07:18And figure out
07:19What synergies there were
07:20Between what I was currently doing
07:22And what they were doing
07:23And I identified that
07:24Like a lot of my friends
07:26Were football players
07:27And they wore helmets
07:28And unless you were like
07:30The star person on the team
07:32It was really hard
07:32To really identify them
07:34Or like for them
07:35To have their moments
07:36And so I really initially
07:38Started to help them
07:39Build their website
07:39To create imagery
07:41Off the field
07:41With actual clothes on
07:43And it just kind of
07:44Took a life of its own
07:45But yeah
07:46No, I've been fortunate enough
07:48To kind of build
07:48With my friends
07:50And I think that's the most
07:51One of the most
07:52Fulfilling things
07:53I could have ever done
07:54You know, by shifting
07:55Shifting my direction
07:57To sports
07:58And really reconnecting
08:00With family
08:01Essentially
08:02Nice, I love that

08:09In the same way
08:12I think
08:13You as a creative director
08:14And stylist
08:15Is you've also
08:15Kind of created
08:16A lane for yourself
08:17As a content creator
08:19In a real way
08:20How do you merge
08:22The two, right?
08:23Being the stylist
08:25And then also the talent
08:26It's been actually
08:29Really interesting
08:29I think
08:30We do such a
08:31You know
08:33An odd job
08:33That I think
08:34A lot of people
08:34Are interested
08:35But don't get the opportunity
08:36To see
08:36Kind of the behind the scenes
08:38And kind of what's going on
08:39There's a lot of like
08:40Glamour that they'll see
08:41On the forefront
08:42But there are
08:42You know
08:43Our steps that we take
08:44That are
08:44Very much
08:45Not glamorous
08:46That I think
08:47People are really
08:48Interested in seeing
08:49So I think
08:50My kind of lane
08:51Came from me
08:52Sharing that
08:53And also sharing
08:54The things that
08:54Inspired me
08:55So I'm like
08:56Really, really
08:57Inspired by travel
08:58And so I think
08:59Some of my
08:59Earliest content
09:00Has been just like
09:01Me just traveling
09:02And like
09:02Finding inspiration
09:03And so it'd be like
09:04Somebody would see me
09:05In a place like Tahiti
09:06Having fun
09:08And kind of
09:08Intaking things
09:09About Tahitian culture
09:10And then a few months later
09:12See the story
09:13That I did with it
09:14For a magazine
09:15So just kind of like
09:16Balance that out
09:17And showing like
09:17The process
09:19And then the work
09:20That comes out of it
09:21Yeah, and I also think
09:23That you've played a part
09:24In kind of
09:25Breaking this stigma
09:27Or this stereotype
09:28That men can't be
09:30Content creators
09:31Right?
09:32Or it's like
09:32It's a space
09:34Really dedicated to women
09:35But I think
09:36You've really
09:37Built a brand
09:39For it
09:40You know
09:40A brand for yourself
09:41In that space
09:42Did you find challenges
09:43In that?
09:45Yeah, I did
09:46I think
09:47There was
09:47I think our
09:48Industry is such a one
09:50That appreciates
09:51Pureness
09:53So like
09:54There's a world
09:55Where
09:55I'm either a stylist
09:58And that's it
09:59Or I'm a content creator
10:00And it was very hard
10:01For people to see
10:02A world where
10:03I could be both
10:04And so it's like
10:05I struggled with
10:06Leaning into the
10:08Content creator-ness
10:09Of it all
10:10Because I didn't want
10:10People to not take me
10:11Seriously as a stylist
10:12Because styling
10:13Was or is
10:15Like the thing that I
10:16Loved the most
10:16It's the thing that
10:17Fueled me
10:17While content creation
10:19Is just like
10:19Me just sharing my life
10:20And I didn't want
10:21To kind of compromise
10:22Either but
10:23Once you like
10:25Kind of get over that
10:25And I found like
10:26The balance
10:27I feel like that helped
10:28Me like smooth things over
10:30And just kind of
10:30Find a space
10:31That felt right for me
10:32But I think that
10:34Kind of space feels
10:34Different for everybody
10:35To be honest
10:36I know others
10:37Who have like
10:38A different level
10:39Of balance
10:40With two different
10:41Jobs or whichever
10:42And Alan
10:45You have built
10:46One of the most
10:48Successful menswear sites
10:50Upscale hype
10:52If you guys are not
10:53Familiar
10:53Get familiar
10:54And I will say
10:57As a former editor
10:59I worked at Complex
11:01When I believe
11:02The blog era
11:03Was really blowing up
11:04And you were
11:05One of those brands
11:07That really started off
11:08When you were
11:11Kind of maybe
11:12Just doing it
11:12As like a hobby
11:13Right
11:14And now you've
11:14Turned it into
11:14A business
11:15How did you
11:17Kind of create
11:17That lane for yourself
11:18So for me
11:21It was just selfish
11:22Selfishly
11:23I'm in Houston
11:25So Houston
11:25Is not like New York
11:26It's not like LA
11:27We don't have access
11:29To a lot of stuff
11:30We don't have access
11:31To clothing
11:32We don't have access
11:32To even that scene
11:34And so what I would do
11:35Just in high school
11:37The first part of college
11:40Anytime I would see
11:42Anybody wearing anything
11:43Whether it's
11:44Let's say Usher
11:45At an awards show
11:46Or like Jay-Z
11:47Walking out and about
11:48Selfishly
11:48I would just look
11:49For what they were wearing
11:50And I would
11:51Try to buy it for myself
11:53Yeah
11:53And so
11:54This is before
11:56Like blogs were a thing
11:57My brother was like
11:59Hey you should
12:00He wants to start a blog
12:01And I was like
12:03Blog doing what
12:04And he was like
12:05This is the thing
12:07Everybody's doing right now
12:07We need to start a blog
12:08And I think your idea
12:09Because he knew
12:10I was doing this
12:11Selfishly for myself
12:12And I would create
12:13Folders of like
12:14From Jay-Z
12:16To David Beckham
12:17To Chris Brown
12:18To Usher
12:19Folders of like
12:20Outfits that they were wearing
12:22When they were out and about
12:23At award shows
12:24And then I would have
12:26In that same folder
12:27The pieces that they were wearing
12:28And then I would try
12:29To locate them
12:30And this is before
12:30Like the internet
12:31It was
12:31It wasn't easy
12:32To search for clothing
12:33You had to call stores
12:34And once you found out
12:36What a brand was
12:37You had to call the store
12:38And be like
12:38Hey how can I get this
12:39And this and that
12:40And that
12:40So yeah
12:41That's kind of
12:42How I started
12:43And then
12:44Because I was the only one
12:45In that space at the time
12:46Like IDing clothing for men
12:48It took off
12:49And it took off
12:50Rather quickly
12:52To the point where
12:53Brands were like
12:55I had a relationship
12:56With brands
12:56I had a relationship
12:57With artists
12:57Athletes
12:58And what everyone liked
13:00It was kind of like
13:01Men's best kept secret
13:03It was a way for men
13:05To show off
13:05What they were wearing
13:06And the price point
13:07Of what they were wearing
13:08Without having to say it
13:10Without having to call it out
13:11Themselves
13:12And so I think
13:13That's kind of what we all
13:14In a nice subtle way
13:16Would like
13:17Is like you know
13:18We want people
13:18We want to be recognized
13:19For what we're wearing
13:20We want to kind of flex it
13:21But we don't want to be
13:22The ones having to shout it out
13:23And so
13:24Upskill Hype
13:25We did that for a long time
13:27And we're still doing that now
13:28But the game has shifted
13:29A lot now
13:30It's like now
13:31The artists
13:32The celebrities
13:33The entertainers
13:34Now they have their own platforms
13:35So now they can kind of
13:37ID what they want
13:38They can put their own looks
13:39Out there
13:40And then they can tag what they're wearing
13:41So we've had to shift
13:42Our model in a way
13:44But yeah
13:45I want to say
13:46We grandfathered
13:48That experience
13:50For sure
13:50I would agree
13:51I'm smiling a lot
13:52Because I used to intern
13:53For Upskill Hype
13:54Yeah
13:54I was a terrible intern
13:56So

14:06And that's made
14:07The kind of model
14:08That you guys have

15:21With fashion

15:22Well I think
15:25It's
15:26Changed
15:27Tremendously
15:28You know
15:29When I was
15:29Into fashion
15:30I feel like
15:31It was a lot
15:31Of guys
15:31That were
15:32Like scared
15:33To express
15:33Themselves
15:34In that way
15:34Because people
15:35Deemed them weird
15:36Or it wasn't
15:37Like cool
15:37For like
15:38Guys who play
15:38Sports
15:39To be in
15:40The fashion
15:40Too
15:41And so now
15:42Because the
15:42Society has
15:43Shifted
15:44And culture
15:44Has changed
15:45Where so many
15:45Athletes
15:46Rappers
15:47Who really
15:47Pride themselves
15:48In looking
15:48Great
15:49A lot of
15:50The younger
15:50Generation
15:50I like
15:51See my
15:51Nephews
15:52And I'm
15:52Like you
15:52Got the
15:52Same stuff
15:53As me
15:53How can
15:54You afford
15:55This
15:55First
15:56That's the
15:57Biggest
15:57It's crazy
15:58And so I'm
15:58Like a lot
15:59Of guys
15:59Are starting
15:59A lot

16:01Being in
16:01The fashion
16:02So it's
16:02Like by the
16:02Time they get
16:03Into the league
16:04Or by the
16:04Time they get
16:05To college
16:05They already
16:06Created some
16:06Type of
16:07Fashion identity
16:08So I really
16:09Think it's
16:09Amazing
16:10I myself
16:11I'm a proud
16:12Graduate of
16:12The HBCU
16:13Virginia Union
16:14University
16:14And so I
16:15Proud myself
16:16Also in
16:17Hiring people
16:18Mainly from
16:19The HBCU
16:20Space
16:20But like
16:20Also guys
16:21Who went
16:22To my
16:22University
16:23And I
16:23Even just
16:24Seeing like
16:24Their eagerness
16:25To be around
16:26The eagerness
16:27To really express
16:28Themself in that
16:28Way has been
16:29Like super
16:29Fulfilling for me
16:30So aside
16:31From like
16:31Me being at
16:32The forefront
16:32Also lending
16:33A hand back
16:34And pulling
16:35Them up
16:35Is like
16:36Something that
16:36Is like
16:37At the top
16:37Of my list
16:38Of priorities

16:40Building my

17:19Like really frustrating

17:20The men's wear space

17:22Media in general
17:23Is that
17:24I think as black men
17:25We care so much
17:26About style
17:27And these
17:28Like large companies
17:29And large publications
17:30That like
17:32Talk about style
17:33In the way
17:34That we like
17:35Clock in
17:36And log in
17:36Do not look like us
17:38The people who work there
17:39Do not look like us
17:40And they're not even cool
17:41Like to be very honest
17:42So it's like frustrating
17:43To know
17:44Like coming from
17:44I'm also from Houston
17:45So I come from somewhere

17:47We care
17:47We're down south
17:48We care so much
17:49About style
17:49We're so disconnected

17:51When I was growing up
17:52We were so disconnected
17:53From like places
17:54Like New York
17:54And LA
17:55And like getting to New York
17:57And finding out
17:58Is the like
17:58Lamest dudes
17:59Telling me
18:00Telling people
18:01What to wear
18:01Like I'm just like
18:02Like my ponder down the street
18:04Can literally
18:05Outdress you on any day
18:06And so
18:07That kind of stuff

18:14A style platform

18:22Varied experiences
18:23That require

19:15We're so diverse

19:22So I love where we're at now

19:29More pushing of the envelope

21:14And that's strange

21:21I think in my mind

21:23He's looking for
21:24What's the next thing

21:26And some that
21:26He hits and he misses
21:27But he stays swinging
