00:56There's so many things we haven't tried
01:00I will love you better than I used to
01:05And give you all the love I haven't done
01:10Oh, I want to want to be where you are

01:42I gotta, gotta be with you
01:44Oh
01:46I wanna be, I wanna be, oh

02:55How we feeling y'all? How we feeling? How we feeling y'all? We're still awake. We're still awake. We're ready. I hear y'all. Listen, welcome to the Men's Suede Experience right here. I'm Josh here hanging out. We have panels all weekend. It's been great all weekend. We have Mind Over Matter coming up in about two minutes. We have Corey Collette and Alba Brock right here.
03:15We're going to be talking about Mind Over Matter. Once again, if you're just coming in, we got the Who That Barbershop. We got the games at the front, the photo booth, the runway right here. Once again, welcome to Suede Men's Experience.
03:28Make sure you hashtag it, Essence Fest. Hashtag it, Suede Men's Experience right here. We appreciate y'all. Happy Essence. 30 years.
03:36Be my girl. I can't lie. It'll be fly. You are my B-U-D-E-Y. Don't be shy. Give it a try. I could be yours and you can be mine.
03:47I'm sorry if I come off disrespectful or my convo is a little bit too sexual. But damn, it's incredible. Be more flexible because the context of this text is special.
03:58But wait, let me explain it. A buddy is an equal beneficial arrangement. A buddy is a buddy that don't be complaining with.
04:05His or her buddy ain't your buddy. Sometimes. And maybe I can call you up. Sometimes. And maybe I can take you out. Sometimes.
04:13So let's exchange digits and later arrange digits. Either your place or mine. Yeah. It's a different type of commitment. Oh, yeah. I'm talking about a true friendship. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Someone I can depend on if you're down no matter what.
04:27Let me know what you're with, cause, girl, it'll be fly if you are my B-U-P-D-Y.
04:32Don't be shy, no, give it a try, yeah, I could be yours and you can be mine, girl, I can't lie.
04:39It'll be fly, yeah, if you are my B-U-P-D-Y, don't be shy, give it a try, oh, I could be yours, yeah, you can be mine, oh, oh, oh.
04:48Baby, what I'm really trying to say is, the definition of a real buddy is, oh, she's that one, yeah, I'm gonna have fun.
04:56Oh, my shotgun through the city with me, together there's no limit to what we can do, it's all about me.
05:04So, baby, what you say, yeah, pass this vibe and it's all, cause, girl, it'll be fly, oh, you are my B-U-P-D, if you are my B-U-P-D, give it a try, yeah, I could be yours, yeah, I could be yours and you can be mine, oh, it'll be fly.
05:23Good afternoon, good afternoon.
05:26How y'all doing?
05:29Ah, tell me something slick.
05:31Welcome to our discussion this afternoon on a very, very important topic, isn't this a beautiful space?
05:37Yes.
05:38Talking about men's health, but let me tell you, we're talking about men's health and stress and how to cope when we have mental health issues.
05:46I took a personal journey myself, I've lost 50 pounds.
05:49That's my applause, yes, yes.
05:52Since January, in the month of May, this, I'll accept the applause from everybody but my friends because I never knew I was overweight.
05:59And they tell me I look good now, like, why y'all ain't telling me I needed to lose weight?
06:02In the month of May, I took a journey.
06:05I decided that I was going to walk a million steps in 30 days.
06:10It sounds ridiculous.
06:11It sounds obsessive.
06:13It sounds oppressive and depressive.
06:15But it wasn't.
06:16It was transformative.
06:17I walked off of my blood pressure medications.
06:19I realized in the world of men that fine and good are four-letter words.
06:26How we doing today?
06:27Fine.
06:28How we doing?
06:29Good?
06:29You're lying.
06:30Men don't talk.
06:32We all like to think that we're athletes.
06:34We all like to think that, you know, that seventh grader that made the track team, that won that ribbon in that race, is with us for the rest of our lives.
06:41But sadly, it's not.
06:43As we know, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, they plague our community.
06:47And now there also seems to be a rash of prostate cancer in the black community.
06:52It's stressful.
06:53We're doing screenings next door.
06:55We've done 368 with our students.
06:57Our high blood pressure sends some people to urgent care.
07:00There's ways to take care of ourselves.
07:02And what we've done today, when you hear the word buffed, when you hear the word fit, when you hear the word fitness,
07:10we brought a panel of two people that are New Orleans-owned that have worked with stars that,
07:15if you don't recognize them, you recognize their clientele.
07:18If you've seen their stars, those stars with their shirts off or fit, like the names like Michael B. Jordan,
07:25seen the movies like Black Panther, those type things, you'll understand why.
07:30I want to bring to the stage, first I'd like to bring out Corey Cahey.
07:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:44If you want to learn how to drive fast, you drive a fast car, right?
07:47Yeah.
07:48Looked like you've done a couple push-ups or two.
07:50Next, I'd like to bring out Albert Brock, another of New Orleans-owned, several of the stars that he's worked with.
07:57I'm going to let them introduce themselves, yeah, go ahead, get it out of the way, come on, yeah.
08:02Well, yeah, there it is, there it is.
08:06What's happening, fellas?
08:07Doing good, doing good.
08:08Good to see y'all.
08:09How you doing, Doc, baby?
08:11I do a lot of health and wellness stuff, do the fitness thing, the whole nine.
08:16Nowhere near to the extent that you do.
08:19Let people know who you are, and make sure to tell both of them where you're from.
08:22So, first of all, I'm Corey Cahey, a celebrity trainer and actor from New Orleans, the West Bank.
08:30My people.
08:32I've been out here, been in L.A. about 10 years now, but, of course, glad to be back home at Essence Festival.
08:38I've trained celebrities from, like you say, Michael B. Jordan to everybody, basically, has been through my situation and my system, and it's been a good time.
08:49That's good. Albert.
08:50Albert.
08:51How you guys doing?
08:53So, my name is Albert Brock.
08:54Do that again and smile.
08:55Y'all go ahead and cheer like y'all want to.
08:57Say it.
08:58Do it again.
08:58Do it again.
08:58So, my name is Albert Brock.
09:01I'm a celebrity trainer, performance trainer.
09:04I've trained some notable people, such as Mr. New Orleans, Larry Murrow, Bobby Wagner, Leonard Fournette.
09:11I previously owned the largest black-owned training facility in America at the age of 25.
09:16I decided to move on and take my business online, but blessed to be here, part of Essence, and talk to something about that's deeper than physical health.
09:25Thank you for that.
09:26So, you know, we live in a stressful world.
09:29There are stressful things that we deal with, but it all starts with us, right?
09:35So, let's give our audience a little history.
09:37When did you, and this is for both of you, when did you first realize and work on your own relationship with your health and your overall fitness?
09:44For me, it started coming out of high school.
09:49I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do because in high school, I was always in music, which is physical as well, but I wanted to do something in my body.
09:56But my journey was a little bit different.
09:57It wasn't about just health and just feeling good.
10:00I wanted to look good, honestly.
10:01I mean, I wanted to get attention from women, so I wanted to get muscles.
10:04Say it again for the people in the back.
10:06I feel like people work out to be healthy, but you work out to look good.
10:10And, honestly, my journey with health and wellness and fitness when it came to transforming my body, I actually became more mental because I've realized that when you can change your body, you can change your mind.
10:20Because the body is the easiest but hardest thing to change because you control it.
10:24And once I did that, I started to see my life change because when you look good, you do feel good.
10:28Feel good.
10:29That's 100%.
10:31For me personally, at about 19 years old, I would say, when my aunt, who was 17 years old, she passed away of a heart attack.
10:40I was previously having no chronic illness.
10:43So, believe it or not, I was 19 years old telling my family we don't need to buy no sodas.
10:49Growing up in the South, so food was very Southern, of course.
10:53My mom cooked damn good, so it hurted me sometimes pushing the meals away.
10:57But even deeper than that, so I'm big with our community specifically understanding that there's different facets of health.
11:04So, number one is spiritual health by far.
11:07Keep us anchored.
11:07Number two is emotional health.
11:10And three is social health.
11:12And last is the physical health that's, you know, Corey elaborated on.
11:16So, just to go a little deeper into it, when I was about 15, 16 years old, it took me down even a deeper rabbit hole to find, you know, what health really is when my uncle passed away also of murder in the New Orleans area.
11:29So, that allowed me to understand what my environment could also do to my mentor.
11:36So, yeah.
11:37So, that steps to it.
11:40I want to quickly get to the biggest myths that you run into.
11:44Like, so every man in here, if you ask, I'm going to get in this shape, it's going to take me two weeks.
11:51In two weeks, I'll be good.
11:53I want to hear some of the myths that you hear besides that two-week myth.
11:57We all think we're 18, but in two weeks, we'll be good.
12:01Some people think less than two weeks.
12:03They think three days.
12:05Birthday ready, huh?
12:05They want your birthday ready and it comes to you three days for the birthday.
12:08And then you ask when your birthday.
12:09Tomorrow?
12:10Yeah.
12:11Yeah.
12:11The biggest myth in fitness is that you can do it overnight.
12:15You didn't put that weight on overnight, so it's not going to leave overnight.
12:18And when people realize the mindset that when it comes to actually changing your body, you have to first crash and fall before you actually get up and succeed.
12:26Because if you don't understand your body, you won't be able to change it.
12:29All of these fad diets and all of these different things you can try out here, you will all fail if you don't understand the process of actually understanding your body.
12:37Understand yourself first, and then you can change your body.
12:40Yeah, 100%.
12:41And I'm trying to piggyback on Corey because Corey is someone I also looked into in the game.
12:45So I'm not going to touch on the same point as him, but I'm going to say one of the biggest myths is being physically healthy and us thinking that's a representation of health.
12:53But like you, I know a lot of people who are physically healthy but can be mentally ill.
12:57So I think that's the biggest misconception in the health industry.
13:02So I have to keep on.
13:04I can't have on my doctor hat and not say, and people think something's wrong with me.
13:08So I do health education for Fox 8 here.
13:10I've been doing it for 11 years.
13:12And everything I do is evidence-based.
13:14I'd love to know some of the craziest things that y'all have had people, clients, respectable clients come to you and want you to back up.
13:23Like, so when I did my exercise, I did the million steps deal.
13:26I went to my doctor.
13:28It was supervised, Dr. Washington in the audience.
13:30Shout out, Dr. Washington.
13:31She made sure I lost him 50 pounds.
13:33I've heard every diet.
13:36I done heard, look, bro, I don't eat when it's outside, when the sun's outside.
13:39I done heard hot butter Kool-Aid.
13:42I need to wear a vest.
13:43Just what are some of the things?
13:45Fast don't last, right?
13:47Am I right?
13:47No, I don't.
13:48So what are some of the craziest things that you've heard you've had to deal with?
13:52Because it leads to physical stress.
13:54It leads to the thoughts of depression and defeatism that can lead to bad habits.
13:59So I've never done it, but people that go without eating for 12 to 14 days, I get it.
14:08People talk about it in the Bible.
14:10They talk about their praying and fasting, which I agree with, which you should.
14:15But I don't see how can you not drink water or eat.
14:18And I've had some clients.
14:19Yeah, that's called starvation.
14:21It's called insanity.
14:23People crazy.
14:25You need food to survive.
14:26You need water to hydrate you so you can live.
14:29And I've had some clients do some crazy stuff where they're going to climb mountains and doing marathons and big cycling races and not eating any food.
14:38People don't realize you're actually hurting yourself.
14:39You're taking away from your life.
14:41You won't get any younger by trying to do these crazy things.
14:44And changing your metabolism.
14:45If you have your body think that you're about to die and starve, it starts to store everything.
14:50It's fat so you won't help yourself.
14:51Because it doesn't know when it's going to eat another meal.
14:53Exactly.
14:53So we always want a doctor, supervision, someone to check in no matter what.
14:57But what other things can people do?
15:00Because I'm going to spend the second half of this talking about the mental health aspects of this.
15:03What other physical things for the common sense people that want to lose weight, that want to try to do an exercise, and I got this diet.
15:10I want to try this.
15:10How do you handle dismantling that and keeping a client and keeping people healthy?
15:15That's a great question, doc, because a lot of people try new diets right now, especially this is the highest, you know, rate of, what am I going to say, health attention that I feel like we've ever, you know, had within U.S. history right now.
15:29And there's certain fads people like to try.
15:31But I would say there's no specific one diet to cater towards your body.
15:36Everyone has a different blood type.
15:38Everyone has different, you know, genetical paths.
15:40So something I do with my clients who's willing to take that next step is get a blood evaluation.
15:47And you could get a specific diet catered specifically towards, you know, your blood type.
15:52I'm going to piggyback off that, the blood type.
15:55If you don't know what's going on on the inside, you'll never change the outside.
15:59Exactly.
16:00Exactly.
16:00Get your blood work done.
16:01And most importantly, I got to say it, go talk to your doctor.
16:05If you're going to lose weight, if you're going to do anything, if you're going to work with these world-renowned trainers, go talk to your doctor first to make sure that you can do it.
16:13You touched on something that, again, it leads into our conversation about mental health, social media.
16:21How has that helped?
16:23So the question is how has it helped to hurt your career, but how have you seen it help and hurt people as a whole?
16:28What do people need to do when they see these things on social media?
16:32Don't try it at home.
16:34Don't do that.
16:35Social media can be, it's a two-headed sword.
16:38It can be good for you or it can hurt you, but the biggest problem I see is comparison.
16:42Everybody's comparing themselves to the next person.
16:45You have trainers that just started training, and they want to be me, and they're trying things and doing things to people and hurting them when I've been doing this for almost 20 years now.
16:53So wait, that's just from the trainer perspective.
16:55What about the people looking at that trainer for help?
17:00You know.
17:01Be nice.
17:02I'm going to try.
17:03It's Sunday.
17:03We're in church.
17:04No, we're close to church.
17:08Do your research.
17:09Do your research.
17:10Don't just go.
17:11I said this recently.
17:12Don't just go follow anybody because a lot of these trainers and people, they look really good, but they can't change nobody else.
17:18And this is me being very honest.
17:20I see a lot of trainers, a lot of young trainers, even some old guys.
17:23They couldn't tell you between left and right, honestly, and be able to help you, but they're given all this false information to get people to come in because social media is the easiest thing you can lie on.
17:33People can live a whole life and go home in a cardboard box, and they think that this is what it really is.
17:39So when it comes to fitness, you have these people that look amazing, and they're out there selling bull crap.
17:46Yes, you said that well.
17:47Yeah, I try to be nice as I can.
17:49So what about if it's a well-renowned athlete or actor or someone that comes to you with these crazy ideas, and you see some of the stuff, how do you handle that as trainers?
18:02Part of what you do, I know, is you build people up, and that's why people are like their trainers, like they are about their hairstylists or their barbers.
18:11They are very loyal, and you better not talk about them because it's more than just a relationship about physical health.
18:17You're working on the mental health aspects of it, so I want to bring that in.
18:21If you want to touch on what he just said with the social media, and then let's gear it towards this mental health piece because we're not going to have a men's talk and not talk about mental health.
18:29Oh, 100%, 100%.
18:30I want to elaborate on what you say real quick, Doc, about having the world-class athlete and try to get them to change their perspective in some ways because that's something I commonly have.
18:39So I would say building trust is the first thing.
18:42If you're already a Maserati and you got to the NFL, it's nothing I need to change, you know, predominantly.
18:47It's just fine-tuning.
18:49So that's one thing right there I tell my actors.
18:51You want to fine-tune some things that take you to the next level.
18:54I'm big on how you do anything.
18:55It's how you do everything.
18:56So attention, well, growth is always in the details.
19:00But to elaborate, Doc, on social media, how I can help my business or hinder anyone,
19:04number one, I would say, like I said, I formerly had the largest black-owned facility in the country of 20,000 square feet.
19:12But when I took a step back and decided to get out of it, social media allowed me to touch more of the masses.
19:18So that was definitely the benefit.
19:20The kind, I would say, to touch on what Corey said is definitely comparison.
19:25We tend to do that so much.
19:27Even, you know, myself, I need to know when to swipe by that app or, you know, detox from me time to time.
19:32You know, this is really, really, really good.
19:37It's very rare that we sit down as men and have conversations, frank conversations about what really happens when we're trying to get in shape.
19:47Real quick, those days where you just don't feel like it, can you tell people it's okay or is it not okay?
19:54Should they just abandon the whole workout and quit because they messed up at Essence Fest and didn't take their meds or ate too much?
20:00So I'm not going to front.
20:01A lot of people see me as like a RoboCop and think I don't take no days off.
20:06Some days I just can't do it.
20:08And as I got older.
20:09Say it again.
20:09Some days I just can't do it.
20:10It's okay?
20:11It's okay to just take a date.
20:12Can we possibly say, can every person in here, particularly men, can we just say, some days I can't do it?
20:20Don't act like we're not in church.
20:21Some days I can't do it.
20:25Yeah, I heard it, I heard it, I heard it.
20:26Keep going.
20:26But seriously, you know, sometimes you have to let your body rest.
20:30You have to listen to your body.
20:31And you're really not just listening to your body, you're listening to your mind.
20:35The mental aspect when it comes to fitness is so important because it can literally reshape how you see your life.
20:41But also, when I think of fitness mental-wise, it's the place I go to that can actually help me.
20:46It's the place I can go to that won't hurt me unless you hurt yourself physically.
20:50And being in the mental aspect of it, you don't want to go your mental saying, sit down, listen to yourself, listen to your body.
20:56Take a rest day.
20:56Don't just try to do everything that you can every single day because you end up hurting yourself and then you're taking months off.
21:02And what happens then?
21:04Yeah, yeah.
21:06Corey's the GOAT, y'all.
21:07It's hard to follow up behind him.
21:08But what I'm going to say is God is the greatest.
21:12And I'm going to say that because motivation is like cheap gas.
21:16But when you're spiritually anchored, I have a sense of discipline, you know, that allows me to keep going every single day.
21:21So, of course, I wake up some days when I'm half depressed because things ain't going my way or I'm not getting somewhere fast enough.
21:27But when I'm anchored within who I am, I rely on discipline, heaven.
21:32So I would say that discipline over motivation for sure.
21:35So I see who you are.
21:38You're one of them dudes.
21:39I ain't going to say much.
21:40And then you hit us with a hammer.
21:42You just said a lot.
21:43So what I heard was the power of prayer.
21:46I heard self-assessment.
21:48I just don't feel like it.
21:49I can't today.
21:52And that's okay.
21:52If I come to you and you're my trainer and I tell you that, how do you assess what I'm saying is true and when to pull more out because I'm having a bad day and I might just need to talk to somebody?
22:08If you show up, I can tell within the first 10 minutes of where your mind is but through conversation.
22:14So when I meet a person and do a consultation, I don't want to talk about your goals.
22:18I want to talk about your life.
22:20I want to talk about what you did yesterday.
22:21I want to talk about your family, your job.
22:23I want to talk about you because if you're coming in here mentally discouraged, mentally empty, I need to feel you.
22:29And I'm going to feel you with words, not just through a workout because you're probably going to do a workout and leave empty but your mind will leave full after I put the word inside of you to make you understand who you are and have that belief in yourself to get through it.
22:40Because if you don't have your mind right, your body won't ever get right.
22:43Your day won't go right.
22:44And if it's that bad, I tell you to take a day off.
22:46Go rest.
22:47That's perfect.
22:49You have to meet people halfway.
22:52Having daughters taught me that I only see my two beautiful girls but you have to meet them halfway.
22:56I got you wrapped around their finger too.
22:57I saw you backstage.
22:58Oh, man, what?
23:00Yeah, but you have to meet people halfway.
23:02So wherever they're at home, I pride myself meeting them now but letting them know we're going to get this shit done because we're going to rely on discipline over, you know, motivation.
23:09So as a guy, I'm at this amazing panel with these two brilliant fitness experts and I'm sitting in the audience and I'm inspired.
23:18I ain't did a sit-up since I sat up out of bed this morning.
23:22I ain't walked since I got a car.
23:24But y'all inspired me and I want to walk.
23:26What would you suggest if I have not worked out, besides going to the doctor first, shout out again, Dr. Washington, your doctor, I want to start.
23:35Walking ain't really exercise and I want to look like y'all.
23:38Where would I, where do you recommend I start?
23:41Because that's the hardest part because as men, we don't express ourselves.
23:44We'll go further into a hole and we will lie.
23:46How are you doing?
23:47I'm good.
23:48I'm fine.
23:49And they'll pull you to the side.
23:50Say, bro, you can train me.
23:52I didn't say, where would you start?
23:54Where would you tell someone to start?
23:56I'll start with you and then let him.
23:58I would say, meet yourself halfway.
24:02So we probably have some people in the audience who don't work out five, six times a day like, you know, myself or Corey.
24:07But if you're in some type of fellowship consistently, church, if you're mentally going to therapy, if you are just doing walks, I'm going to say just meet yourself halfway with that and give yourself grace and just take it one day at a time.
24:21Because like I said, it's harmony when it comes to, you know, growing within health.
24:26So don't beat yourself down, but where you can start is, like I said, just doing the small things and picking up week by week.
24:32To my fellas, I do want to say that one degree can shift the whole projection of where you're going in life.
24:37If an airplane is going from here to New York, one degree, that airplane is going to Toronto at that point.
24:42So the smallest degrees, the smallest percentage is added every single day.
24:47Corey?
24:48I would tell everyone, find a community.
24:51Just like you say, fellowship, find a community.
24:53Because fitness is not fun when you're by yourself, especially in this day and age because of social media.
24:59And find something you love, whether you want to be riding a bike, you want to be doing a CrossFit class, you want to be doing whatever it is.
25:05Find the fun in it, find the love in it.
25:07You have to fall in love with fitness to stick with it.
25:09Because as soon as it breaks your heart and you feel like you can't do it, you want to leave and run away.
25:13You've got to find the place and you've got to invest in yourself.
25:15And not just money, your time.
25:17Make sure your time and your effort is worth it because fitness is one thing that you can love and it can take you to amazing places.
25:23It did it for me.
25:24Fitness took me out of New Orleans and brought me to Hollywood.
25:27And you could have never told me that would happen.
25:29And that's the thing about fitness.
25:30You have to love it.
25:32Don't get out here trying to do the worst and the most.
25:35If you know you can't go bench press 225 or something like that, go do push-ups.
25:41And for you guys out here, stop trying to do the most.
25:43Boys and ladies, stop just doing butt exercises, okay?
25:48All right?
25:48They've got other parts of the body, all right?
25:50Y'all didn't see it.
25:51He bit his lip before he said it.
25:53I see it all day.
25:54They've got other things we can do.
25:55But overall, just find something you love.
25:58Fitness is something that you can take with you everywhere and it can be good for you.
26:02You can love it and it can take your lives to different places.
26:04So real quick before I want to end with how people can get in contact with you, how can – if someone's looking to find a trainer, how do you recommend where do they start?
26:14Not everybody can afford the Hollywood actor, the elite athlete trainers, and maybe they don't want to start there.
26:20But give them two points of where they should start and what to look for.
26:25Honestly, Instagram.
26:27These days, Instagram.
26:29If you don't find it in your local neighborhoods, go to social media.
26:31If not, Google.
26:32Google, you can Google, and you can find exactly what you want.
26:35Alvin?
26:36Alvin?
26:38I'm going to throw myself out there first unless you guys – you can log on to abxplode.com.
26:46I do have home programs.
26:48You guys can access as low as $20 for the average person who just wants to get started.
26:54I also have meal plans available on there.
26:55But to tie on to what that question was, you can start looking at if it's deep and it's just superficial when it comes to Instagram trends.
27:04They really have to stand for something, and that's something you can't fake in this world.
27:08And, Corey, real quick, where can we find you?
27:10You can find me everywhere.
27:13Instagram, Mr. Callie, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok.
27:17If you can't find me, Google, Corey Callie.
27:20There you go.
27:21Ah.
27:22And, ladies and gentlemen, that's our panel.
27:24Can you give our panelists a round of applause?
27:28Give yourselves a round of applause.
27:30Get tech, get fit, get moving, take a break, find a fitness.
27:33I can be found at Doc Griggs 1.
27:34And over there taking blood pressures.
27:36Thank you all very much.
27:38Once again, mind up about it.
