00:00Work hard, play hard, healthy body, healthy mind, face the future, fear no challenge.
00:10I strive to be the best that I can be.
00:16Work 2000, work hard 2000, play hard, be the best.
00:24Face the future 2000, work hard, fear no challenge.
00:29You know, challenge, challenge, be the best.
00:33Hey, how are you? I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:36And I'm Maria Samson.
00:37Now, if you thought American Gladiators was an awesome show, just wait till you see what's going to happen right here in the next half hour.
00:44We've taken a bunch of kids, trained them, pumped them, and now we're going to turn them loose on some of the very same Gladiator games that you've been dying to play.
00:52Welcome to Gladiators 2000.
00:56Let's meet the Red Team.
00:59Weighing 70 pounds and standing 4 feet, 3 inches tall, it's 10-year-old Hattie Williams.
01:04And at 70 pounds, 4 feet, 10 inches tall, 11-year-old Jacqueline Gamagami.
01:11Coaching the Red Team today are Saber and Ice.
01:14And for the Blue Team at 4 feet, 5 inches, weighing 60 pounds, it's 10-year-old John Hennessy.
01:22Competing with John is 11-year-old, 5 feet, 1 inch, 107 pounds, Sarah Lotterio.
01:31The coaches today for the Blue Team are Nitro and Scott.
01:37All right, some of you might be saying to yourself, sure, these kids are all probably great athletes, but I'll bet there's nothing going on upstairs, huh?
01:46You're wrong.
01:47Here at Gladiators 2000, we don't just pump the body, we also pump the brain.
01:51That's right.
01:51And it pays off because after each event, the teams will be given a chance to earn bonus points by correctly answering questions about physical fitness, health, and nutrition.
01:58All things that they've learned right here at Gladiators 2000.
02:02Well, let's talk, let's do it.
02:04All righty then.
02:06Okay, up first, here we go, it's the wall, a 32-foot climb straight up.
02:11The wall is divided into five different zones.
02:13We'll set the clock to 90 seconds, and each contender will have to climb as high as they can, as fast as they can.
02:19They'll earn five points every time they get their entire body into a new zone.
02:23And if someone gets to the top before time runs up, what happens?
02:26They get 10 bonus points.
02:27First up, John Hennessey from the blue team.
02:33And Kari Williams from the red team.
02:40Okay, red team set, blue team set.
02:46Officials are ready.
02:48Let's do the wall.
02:49Here we go, taking down 90 seconds.
02:52Now the object to get your entire body into a colored zone for five points.
02:56With the exception of the green part there, no points for the green.
02:59You've got Harry for the red team on the right, John for the blue team on the left.
03:02John already into the first zone, which will be five points.
03:05And Harry's pretty close there, too.
03:06Now John told us that he's into rock climbing.
03:09So this should be easy for John.
03:10Harry fighting to get into that first five-point zone as he pulls his upper body.
03:15Uses the upper body strength, pulls into that zone.
03:16Real test, talk about tests of upper body.
03:19And you can see how steep it is right there.
03:21Him climbing onto that wall.
03:22You've got to focus and concentrate.
03:24As you see the two of them, you see the lead John's got.
03:26Right, John pulling ahead now by just a little.
03:29But Harry could catch up.
03:3148 seconds to go.
03:32Nitro said, what does he tell John as a coach?
03:34He says, you've got to stay focused, concentrate on your movements.
03:3742 seconds left.
03:38And remember, the first person to get over the top of the wall.
03:41Oh, and Harry slips off.
03:44Harry, that's right.
03:45You're saying the first person to get to the top gets 10 bonus points.
03:48Right, and the second person up will get five bonus points.
03:50Harry has got to start from ground zero.
03:52Zero points.
03:53He wants to regain as many colors.
03:54And look at John up there, though.
03:55He is really up there, and he's going to be close.
03:5815 points.
04:0020 seconds to go.
04:01John fighting to get to the top, racing to get to the top.
04:04And again, Harry down there, what he really needs to do now,
04:07with 13 seconds left, is trying to get into as many zones as he can
04:10before time runs out.
04:11John almost lost his footing there for one second.
04:13Harry, they're running as hard as he can.
04:14Five seconds to go.
04:15Five seconds left.
04:16Here we go.
04:17Three, it's quench time.
04:17Can he get his body into the red zone?
04:19First five runs out.
04:20Oh, it cannot happen.
04:22Oh, so close.
04:23What a race.
04:24Good recovery from Harry.
04:25Let's go to Peggy now to get the score.
04:27Peggy?
04:28We've got John from the blue team earning 15 points,
04:32and Harry from the red team earning five.
04:34We'll be back to see how Sarah Lotterio and Jacqueline Gamagami do
04:39when they get to scale the wall.
04:41So don't go away.
04:41I would sit right there.
04:52Ugh.
04:53These guys are killing me.
04:56All this exercise and sweat is making me ill.
04:59My gym socks smelled better than this place.
05:04Laser says two-thirds of our body is water.
05:07Laser says we're supposed to drink at least five to seven glasses a day.
05:12Laser says we can live without food for almost five weeks,
05:16but we can only live without water for five days.
05:23The only thing I can go without for five days
05:25is laser telling me another stupid health fact.
05:37Welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
05:39We've already seen our first two contenders take on the wall.
05:44But before the game continues...
05:47What is that?
05:48Do you guys...
05:48Do you smell something?
05:50Yeah.
05:50Oh.
05:51Do you smell that?
05:55Smell that.
05:56I can hardly breathe.
05:58Somebody open a window.
06:00Hey, pipe down.
06:01I'm watching myself on TV.
06:06What?
06:08What?
06:08I think somebody cut the cheese.
06:10Well, don't look at me.
06:12I didn't do it.
06:13Besides, if we're going to talk about it,
06:14let's use the right terminology.
06:16It isn't cutting the cheese,
06:18breaking wind,
06:18stepping on a duck.
06:19The right word is flatulence.
06:23I know it's funny,
06:24and it's embarrassing,
06:25but flatulence can be a regular part of some people's lives.
06:28We know that,
06:29but why does it happen?
06:30Well, science has been working on that
06:32since the beginning of time.
06:33Basically,
06:33you've got a problem with your digestive system.
06:36Maybe you've whiffed down too much food too fast,
06:38or your body has a problem digesting the sugar
06:40called lactose.
06:42Now, lactose is mostly found in dairy products
06:44like milk and cheese.
06:45But the number one cause of flatulence
06:49has to do with the body's inability to digest
06:51certain types of carbohydrates,
06:53as well as a few fibrous vegetables and fruits.
06:56Basically, what happens,
06:57the fiber sits up here on top of your ponch
06:58and rots and forms a bacteria
07:00until it produces gas.
07:02I thought all fruits and vegetables
07:04high in fiber are good for you.
07:05They are,
07:06but they can be rough on your system.
07:08Now, it's a difficult situation
07:09because you don't want to avoid
07:10these healthy foods that cause gas
07:12because they give your body so many vitamins,
07:14minerals, and nutrients that it needs.
07:16So how do you deal with the problem?
07:18Here's what you do.
07:19You take an antacid,
07:20and what that will do
07:21is it'll break up the gas pockets in your stomach.
07:23But I've got to be honest with you,
07:24sometimes there's nothing you can do
07:26and nature's got to take its course.
07:27And then there's only one solution.
07:29What's that?
07:31You blame it on somebody else.
07:33Yeah.
07:35We're back for the second half of the wall
07:37and for the blue team,
07:39Sarah Lotterio.
07:41And for the red team,
07:43Jacqueline Gamagami.
07:48All right.
07:49Our teams are set.
07:50Red team ready.
07:50Blue team ready.
07:51We're ready.
07:51Let's kick it live.
07:52Let's kick it.
07:53I just love saying that.
07:54Remember, this is for my voice.
07:55Here we go.
07:5790 seconds now.
07:58Taking away the object
07:59to get the entire body
08:00into a colored zone for five points.
08:02Not the green, though.
08:03That's not worth any points.
08:04Now, the first person over the top
08:06before time runs out
08:07will get 10 bonus points for their team.
08:08And the second person, the runner-up,
08:10will get five points for their team.
08:11Jacqueline on the right,
08:12right there, in the red,
08:13fighting to get into that blue zone
08:15for her first five points.
08:17As you see, see that stone right there?
08:18See how it's almost like a hand sticking out?
08:20I love those little cups there.
08:20You can cup your hand right around there
08:22and pull up,
08:22but not all of them are like that.
08:24On the left side.
08:24Jacqueline now ahead by just a little bit.
08:25Sarah, for the blue team,
08:27into that first zone,
08:28trying to get her foot in.
08:29She's got it in.
08:29She's got it out.
08:31And does she get it in?
08:32And she's got it in.
08:33Pulling herself up now into the blue.
08:36Jacqueline already into that second zone,
08:38trying to get into the third zone there.
08:40You see how it's starting to junt out right there?
08:42See the slant?
08:42You can see the shadow.
08:44This is where a lot of people have problems there.
08:46It's a dangerous point there.
08:48Sky at the bottom,
08:49coaching along Jacqueline for the red team.
08:5135 seconds to go.
08:52Sarah in a difficult point right here.
08:54She just can't figure out.
08:55It looks like both contenders
08:57are kind of stuck right here.
08:58They just don't know where to put their feet and hands.
08:59Where does my foot go?
09:00She's saying,
09:01where do I put this foot?
09:02Should it go here?
09:02Should it go there?
09:03I don't know.
09:04It's tough.
09:04You really got to plan ahead
09:06or you're going to run out of stones.
09:0818 seconds ticking away.
09:10And you really don't want to look down either
09:11because it is steep.
09:13Let me tell you.
09:15Folks, we are down to 10 seconds.
09:18Still deciding.
09:18Oh, she reaches up
09:20for a while.
09:22Oh, I can't stand it.
09:23Five seconds to get back,
09:24maybe get five points.
09:25She skipped it.
09:25Jacqueline, trying to get to that next zone.
09:26One second.
09:27It doesn't look like she's going to be able to do it.
09:29Great for Jacqueline.
09:30All that work.
09:31Down to ground zero.
09:32Let's go to Peggy now.
09:33Peggy.
09:34Let's go.
09:35We've got Sarah from the blue team
09:37earning five points.
09:38Jacqueline from the red team earning zero.
09:42Great.
09:43That means the blue team has 20
09:46and the red team has five.
09:47Let's go to Maria now
09:48for a bonus question.
09:50Our contenders have finished
09:51their first physical challenge
09:53and now it's time
09:53for their mental challenge.
09:55The subject they'll be quizzed on
09:56is the good subject of flatulence.
09:58Since the blue team won our first event,
10:00they get to choose
10:01which question they want to answer.
10:02Question A or question B?
10:04A.
10:04Question A.
10:05Now remember,
10:06if you get this right,
10:0625 points will go to your team
10:08in five seconds.
10:09Good luck.
10:10What's the number one cause
10:12of stomach-produced gas?
10:17Do you want to call lactose?
10:20Could you repeat that, please?
10:21Lactose?
10:23Judges?
10:24I'm sorry, that's incorrect.
10:25We were looking for an inability
10:26to digest certain carbohydrates.
10:29But good try.
10:30I wouldn't have thought of that.
10:32Red team, name one food
10:33that is most likely to be difficult
10:36to digest and cause flatulence.
10:38Cheese.
10:39Cheese.
10:41Cheese?
10:42Good job.
10:4325 points for you.
10:44Sorry, no points for you.
10:45But let's go to Ryan.
10:47All right, Marie,
10:48you know about that cheese stuff.
10:49Come on.
10:49All right, the red team may be winning,
10:50but there's still plenty of time
10:52for the blue team
10:52to even that score up
10:53when they go head-to-head in bungee.
10:55It's called bones.
10:56It's up next.
10:57Don't move.
10:58Why are two eyes better than one?
11:00Well, of course,
11:01two eyes can see
11:01over a larger area than one,
11:03but mainly since our eyes
11:04are about two and a half inches apart,
11:06they see objects
11:07from slightly different angles.
11:08The brain fits these two images together
11:10to give us a three-dimensional picture.
11:14Cool.
11:15Does that mean that four eyes
11:16would be even better?
11:21We're back for the second half
11:22of Gladiators 2000
11:23where the red team is winning 30 to 20.
11:26And not only are these contenders
11:27getting in on all this great action
11:28playing these awesome games,
11:29they've also got a chance
11:30at winning some great prizes
11:31for themselves and their school.
11:33But before we give away
11:34any of those prizes,
11:35we've got something
11:35really special coming your way.
11:37Put your hands together
11:38for the safety rep from Saber.
11:40I never opened a door
11:44for a stranger
11:45opening the door
11:46for a stranger
11:46could be danger
11:47and I would never let a stranger
11:49get me into his car
11:50because he could go far
11:51and I wonder how hard
11:52you gonna explain
11:54to your father and mother
11:55stranger equals danger
11:56so here's a couple other
11:57routes for us to follow
11:58so please don't miss them
12:00when I go places
12:01I use the buddy system
12:02I always get permission
12:03before I go outside
12:04I check first for my parents
12:05before accepting a ride
12:07I say no when someone
12:08tries to touch me
12:08in the wrong way
12:09I tell a grown-up I trust
12:10and no way, Jose
12:11will I ever let a grown-up
12:13touch on me
12:14I got back up from the S to A

12:34give yourselves a hand
12:36now everybody's heard of bodybuilding
12:40but not the way we do it here at G2
12:42the game's called Bones
12:43you don't hear of bodybuilding
12:44because obviously you don't do it
12:46suspended above the arena floor
12:47is a bag of giant bones
12:49now most healthy people
12:49have 206 bones
12:51but we've divided them
12:52into 12 groups for this event
12:53now with both teammates
12:54harnessed into elastic bungee cords
12:56at opposite ends of the playing field
12:57the object is for one player
12:58to grab a bone group
12:59stretch it as far as they can
13:01on their bungee cord
13:01and hand it off to the teammate
13:03who is also stretched to the limits
13:05once the bones are handed off
13:06the teammate must construct
13:07a giant gladiator skeleton
13:09in the correct order
13:10for every group of bones
13:11that successfully attach
13:12to the growing skeleton
13:13in the correct position
13:14the team will earn 5 bonus points
