00:00On this episode of Hot Rod Garage.
00:02This thing got him in it?
00:03Yeah, we just installed it.
00:05Oh, yeah.
00:05Why were you talking like that?
00:07I don't know, it seemed right.
00:07Arkansas, it's weird.
00:30Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage.
00:32I'm Alex Taylor, and this is Lucky Costa.
00:34Hello.
00:34How are you doing?
00:35I'm good.
00:36Hi, Alex Taylor, how are you?
00:36Hi, great.
00:37So we finally get redemption.
00:39Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:40Yeah.
00:40How many cups of coffee have you had today?
00:41Enough.
00:42Help me.
00:44So we finally have our D100 back in the shop,
00:47and we're going to get redemption on it.
00:49Because if you remember the last time we had it out
00:51at autocross, it did not go so well.
00:53We need redemption for sure.
00:56So we did some upgrades.
00:58The last time it was in here, we did a front suspension
01:00upgrade.
01:01Yes.
01:02In the rear.
01:03Steering.
01:04Steering.
01:04Transmission.
01:05Transmission.
01:06All of that.
01:07Some floors, some pedals, some clothes.
01:09There was a lot of stuff going on there.
01:10The problem is, there was a lot of stuff
01:12that we didn't address.
01:14When we lowered the truck in the back
01:16by about six or seven inches, everything seemed OK,
01:20but the pinion angle was a little off.
01:22Now, that's not what ended up killing us at the autocross,
01:25but maybe the fact that the leaf springs
01:28have not had an upgrade since the truck was probably built
01:31was a big factor of that.
01:32So when Lucky went into about turn three,
01:36we have on camera where the pinion is doing like this,
01:40up, down, up, down.
01:42So with all of that movement back and forth,
01:44it cost our driveshaft to get in a bind.
01:46And actually, one of the straps or girdles
01:48or whatever you want to call it broke off,
01:50and then the driveshaft came out.
01:52Drive shaft left the chat.
01:53So we have the D100 back, and we're going for redemption
01:58and actually getting to make a full autocross pass with this.
02:00Just one lap.
02:01I'm just asking for one lap.
02:02One lap.
02:03So it's back here.
02:04And instead of just doing upgrades to address those problems
02:07that we have, we thought we might as well do some more upgrades.
02:10So what do you do when you take out all the sketch?
02:12You add more sketch.
02:13You have learned well, Grasshopper.
02:15So we're going to be doing an engine swap.
02:18We have a Gen 3 Hemi that we're going to be swapping into here,
02:21so we have a little bit more power.
02:22Nice.
02:23We are going to pair that with our American Powertrain 5-speed
02:26that's behind us.
02:27But we're also going to address our touchy clutch along the way.
02:30We're going to adjust that.
02:31Clutch works great, but the pedal assembly,
02:33it's the factory pedal assembly getting integrated
02:35to the American Powertrain.
02:36There are some hiccups there.
02:37We can talk about that when we get it apart.
02:39And in the back, we're going to be doing a full swap back there.
02:41We're going to do a new rear end housing and third member
02:44with new axles from Quick Performance.
02:46And then we are also going to be doing a leaf spring refresh.
02:50I hope something's getting refreshed back there in leaf springs,
02:52because they are sad.
02:54And then eventually, we'll do the drive shaft,
02:55because obviously we need that.
02:57And if you remember, we are also missing the bed of our truck bed.
03:01Well, the sides are there.
03:02Yeah.
03:03But it's like a port-a-potty in the middle.
03:05Correct.
03:05Right.
03:05That's a great analogy.
03:07OK.
03:07So if we have time, we're going to take the truck bed off.
03:10Lucky has a date with the saws all back there.
03:12And then we're going to eventually put it back on,
03:14new bolts, all of that, and then replace the wood back there.
03:16So we're going to have this where it's not only a really nice driver,
03:20but also where it's going to be a pretty good performer.
03:23We're going back autocrossing with this same place
03:26to try to actually get a pass of our own that we have a time on,
03:29and we can feel like a mission accomplished.
03:31So lots to do.
03:33I say we get to work, but this time, let's reverse the order.
03:36Flip the script.
03:37Flip the script.
03:38Instead of starting with an engine swap,
03:40let's go right to the culprit of why the truck is back in the shop.
03:43And that's the rear end.
03:44So let's start back there, get our new rear end installed, and then work forward.
03:48OK.
03:49Start back there.
03:50Flip the script.
03:51Work our way forward.
03:52Yep.
03:53Script flipping.
04:02That's good.
04:03Keep going.
04:05Keep going.
04:06Stop.
04:07OK.
04:08Tilt back a little.
04:09More.
04:10More.
04:11More.
04:12Now come forward.
04:14A little more.
04:15Slowly.
04:16Slowly.
04:17Slowly.
04:18I think that's it.
04:20OK.
04:21Take her up.
04:22Take her up.
04:22All right.
04:23Going up.
04:24Oh.
04:25It doesn't look structurally sound.
04:26Everything's flexing.
04:27Oh, look.
04:28Is that...
04:29Oh, our muffler guy, who just put the exhaust on before we hit the track.
04:34Attached the muffler hangers to the bed cross member.
04:36So, uh...
04:37I know what you're getting.
04:38I'll be right back.
04:39Yeah.
04:40Take her up.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Oh, I'm going to be right back.
04:43Oh, my gosh.
04:44I'm going to be right back.
04:45Oh.
04:46I'm going to be right back.
04:47Oh.
04:48It doesn't look structurally sound.
04:50Everything's flexing.
04:51Oh, look.
04:52Is that...
04:53Oh, our muffler guy, who just put the exhaust on before we hit the track, attached the muffler
04:56hangers to the bed cross member.
04:57So, uh...
04:58I know what you're getting.
04:59Oh, I'll be right back.
05:01Yeah.
05:02Take her up.
05:03So, last time, when we were working back here, we did a flip kit, meaning that we took
05:15the rear end and put it on top of the springs rather than under the springs.
05:19So that raised the rear end up in the truck, which would affect pinion angle once you sit
05:23it down.
05:24Now, I fully believe that that's not what broke our strap here.
05:29That's not what caused the bind.
05:31It doesn't help, but where we saw our issue was when it was doing like this and like this
05:36and like this, even if it was right, we were going to have that happen.
05:40Instead of just fixing that, we're going to go ahead and fully upgrade and go with a brand
05:45new rear end back here with a third member that's ready to do what we're going to put
05:49it through at autocross.
05:50So we're going to start back here by taking all of the stuff that you see, rear end, shocks,
05:56springs, take it out and then get ready to put new rear end shocks, springs back in.
06:02Run for your life.
06:06Watch your cranium.
06:07I am so going to get a headache.
06:10Watch out.
06:11Stop.
06:12You're going to crash.
06:13OK, I got it.
06:14You go.
06:15OK.
06:16Ready?
06:17Yep.
06:18Going in.
06:19There's a little square forward or back?
06:20Forward.
06:21OK.
06:22This is our opinion issues before.
06:23Wrong.
06:24And when you accelerate it, it went down.
06:25It went down.
06:26It went down.
06:27It went down.
06:28It went down.
06:29It went down.
06:30It went down.
06:31It went down.
06:32It went down.
06:33Yeah.
06:33Yeah.
06:34So the goal here, right now, is to get our pinion angle set using our, one of our favorite
06:38squares.
06:39OK.
06:40OK.
06:41This is our opinion issues before.
06:43Wrong.
06:44And when you accelerate it, it went down.
06:46And then when you got off the brakes.
06:49But I think you should illustrate it more correctly.
06:53When you deceled, it went like this.
06:55Way down.
06:56Yeah.
06:57Yeah.
06:58So the goal here, right now, is to get our pinion angle set using our, one of our favorite
07:03tools here, our digital angle finder, digital level.
07:06We're going to put it here.
07:07We're going to do some math, figure it out, get a visual.
07:11Ideally, I believe, this is from the Book of Burger, Book of Freiburger.
07:18With a leaf spring, you want potentially five degrees down at rest.
07:24So that when you accelerate, it comes up to one or two degrees.
07:27But then you look it up on the internet.
07:29Oh, don't go down that rabbit hole.
07:30I mean, you end up anywhere from two to seven.
07:31So I was like, you know what?
07:32I text my dad.
07:33He's like, if you do somewhere at negative two to negative three, it's going to be better
07:36for just daily driving around.
07:37Right.
07:38Negative three is the number.
07:39Okay.
07:40Sold.
07:41Wait.
07:42This is a perfect opportunity to say it.
07:43Go ahead.
07:44It's just like your opinion, man.
07:49We're done.
07:50So we could take some angle out of it.
07:54Nice.
07:55Okay.
07:56What is it?
07:57390.
07:583270.
07:59290.
08:00Give it a little more.
08:01Okay.
08:023270.
08:03290.
08:04Give it a little more.
08:05Okay.
08:06So 3.0.
08:07Yep.
08:08Now that we have pinion angle set, and we have Lucky got this centered side to side.
08:14That way it's centered in the truck.
08:17We're going to get to tack it up.
08:19So we're going to tack these purges to these tubes, then weld it in place, and then we're
08:24sending this off to be powder coated.
08:26It'll come back nice and shiny.
08:28Pink.
08:29Bright pink with flames.
08:30You're not supposed to tell them that.
08:31It's a surprise.
08:32We can step up as we go.
08:33Surprise.
08:34But after this, once we're done welding, I think we can move to the front and start-
08:38That's going to be so much fun.
08:39Looking at pulling an engine.
08:40What do you think of taupe?
08:52So this 1966 D100-
08:55Yes.
08:56Shaping up.
08:57Actually, it's losing shape as we speak.
08:59It is.
09:00So if you guys know Lucky, you know Lucky loves to take anything that comes off of a vehicle,
09:05off the vehicle.
09:06Oh, yeah.
09:07That's right.
09:08Like everybody, that's how I was raised.
09:09Take it apart, figure out how to put it back together later.
09:11But the only way I like it is if we're doing it with intention, you know?
09:16Right.
09:17That means I just have to make up something smooth to say about taking the front clip off
09:21the car, other than I'm lazy and don't want to bend over the fender for a week.
09:24Actually, we made a compromise.
09:26So we are going to be pulling this 318 poly out of here so that way we can put our new Gen 3 Hemi in.
09:32And so Lucky was saying, hey, if we take the front clip off, then we don't have to bend over and work on it.
09:36And we have to fabricate motor mounts and all of that.
09:38And then I was like, that's a lot of work for the days that we don't have.
09:42But then I was like, I have an idea.
09:43Here's I'll make you a deal.
09:45Let's do that.
09:46If while this is off, we can power wash it, paint the engine bay, clean the firewall up and paint.
09:51So then you win.
09:52I win.
09:53It wins.
09:54We all win.
09:55I'm a winner.
09:56Winner.
09:57I am a winner.
09:59Going in.
10:00Hook me up, Alex Taylor.
10:02Okay.
10:03Up, up, and away.
10:06There's just not enough screaming in an engine pull.
10:24All right.
10:25Everything about this was totally uneventful.
10:29Oh, big old mess.
10:34Uh-oh, gear oil.
10:36Yeah.
10:37Transfluid.
10:38Oh, yeah.
10:39Uh-huh.
10:40Wow.
10:41Technically, transmission needed oil change anyway.
10:44We did put seven miles on it.
10:51Coming forward.
10:53Want to put it right in the middle of it there?
10:56Oh, do you want to let it down or lift it one or the other?
10:59I can lift it.
11:04Okay.
11:05So this motor originally came from Engine Masters.
11:07It's a high-mileage truck motor, 5-7 liter, dynoed in at 498 horsepower at the crankshaft.
11:14That's pretty amazing for a truck motor.
11:16So why did we take out that 318 poly and decide to put in 498 horsepower?
11:21Well, because it was a 318 poly.
11:23Are you kidding me?
11:24This is Hot Rod Garage.
11:25So I got leaf springs painted while our housing was sent off to powder coating.
11:29They powder coated it in three hours.
11:31That's a really good turnaround.
11:33It's nice, glossy black.
11:34This, I just sprayed it with a spray can, but it's not going to rust.
11:38So I'm putting these back in.
11:39We've got fresh new hardware.
11:41Get that all in, tighten it up, and then it's time to put the housing in for the final time.
11:45Put new U-bolt, all that, and then we can actually put the third member in and move on to something else.
11:51So I trial fitted the third member.
11:53It fits.
11:54It's good.
11:55So I'm doing the final fit right now.
11:56I've got a sealer on it, ready to slide this in.
11:58We ended up going with a 370 gear.
12:00You remember the whole rear situation was our problem when we took it autocrossing last time.
12:07We didn't break the rear end yet on the last one, but with all the pinion angle movement, the leaf spring movement, all of that,
12:15it put our drive shaft in a bind and kicked it right out the side of the truck.
12:19So we could have just potentially upgraded the leaf springs.
12:21However, since we're already back here, we might as well put a nice 9-inch from Quick Performance in with a different third member.
12:29So now we go in.
12:32So we reached out the hooker and we got a swap kit set of mounts specifically for this motor, which is great,
12:38but it's designed to go into a truck that is 1972 through 1993.
12:43This is a generation prior.
12:45This is a 66.
12:47I think it's pretty close.
12:49What could go wrong here, right?
12:51So flywheel is installed.
12:54Pilot bushing is installed.
12:55Bell housing is put on.
12:56Check the adjustment of the hydraulic throw-out bearing.
12:58Everything is measured out.
13:00It's ready to go.
13:01Moving in.
13:03American powertrain going directly over to 498 ground pounding horsepower.
13:11It's a little bit of a put an eggshell back together deal.
13:15And I'm going to just work it in there very delicately.
13:22Did you see that?
13:28Oh, f-f-f-funny meeting you here.
13:32Hi, Alex Taylor.
13:33Hello.
13:34How's it going back there?
13:35Oh, pretty good, you know.
13:36How are you doing up here?
13:37I'm doing well up here.
13:38And see?
13:39I started out with a bunch of pieces and now I have one.
13:41So the question remains, will it fit or will it take some cutting?
13:45It's all suspect.
13:47Suspect.
13:48All right.
13:49This is our D100 truck that we took out to autocross just a couple of weeks ago.
13:57And we didn't even get to make a full pass because we had some pinion angle, leaf spring
14:01issues, and we kicked the drive shaft out.
14:03So we did as anyone would.
14:04We brought it back to the shop so we could fix the drive shaft.
14:08But then in addition to that, we upgraded the leaf springs.
14:11We upgraded the rear end to a nine inch.
14:13We have done all kinds of clean up and good work.
14:15And then, of course, as one does, you engine swap it.
14:18So we have removed our 318 poly that was right here.
14:22And we have a Gen 3 Hemi right there.
14:24Hey, Lucky, just land the plane right here.
14:27Come in.
14:28Yep.
14:29Uh-huh.
14:30Straight.
14:31Okay.
14:32I don't know if this is going to fit.
14:35Drop it.
14:36No.
14:37Have you checked this out, make sure it's going to work?
14:40I have not.
14:41This is the absolute guaranteed first time going down.
14:46Wow.
14:47Something caught.
14:48I'm going to go down.
14:49It's going to get really close to the cross member on the oil pan.
14:51Okay.
14:52In, because it's sitting on the cross member.
14:54You might have to raise up and I'll go.
14:56Okay.
14:57Maybe floor jack under the...
14:58Yeah, it's going to have to.
14:59I don't have that.
15:00Man.
15:01So it's a total roll of the dice.
15:02The motor mounts say they go...
15:03They fit a later model truck.
15:05Um, it's looking like there's not a big difference between a later model and an early one like this.
15:11It could...
15:12This could work.
15:14If it worked, it went behind.
15:18These motor mounts under no circumstances will ever work for this application.
15:25One of the biggest interference issues is the oil pan on the cross member.
15:29This is a high clearance oil pan.
15:31We're not going to get much more space than that.
15:33So we're going to have to figure out a way to mount the motor in here in a position that allows the oil pan to not interfere with the cross member.
15:38I would ideally like to lower the front of the motor so that I don't have to make anything too crazy to put the motor mounts in between the frame and the aftermarket motor mount or the swap motor mount.
15:50In addition to all that, this tube, it's got to go.
15:54Steering shaft needs to go through here, from here, directly through the header to a universal on the rack.
16:01If I cut this header and rotate it over like that, that will give me a nice opening to allow that steering shaft to go right to the rack and still be able to put the starter motor in and out.
16:12That's called thinking ahead.
16:14I made all that up, but it's going to work.
16:16Trust me.
16:17It's not a garage.
16:18What could go wrong?
16:21Starting on brakes in the back.
16:22So we are upgrading to our Wilwood disc brakes.
16:25Something that's actually pretty cool about this set that we're actually going with is this kind of looks like a drum brake here, right?
16:30Well, a similar function, but this is actually your emergency and parking brake.
16:34Since we have a manual transmission, this is a really nice benefit because that way you don't have to leave it in gear or you don't have to get out of your truck with it still running and having a neutral and worry about it rolling away.
16:47You guys know what a parking brake emergency brake is for, but a lot of times when you upgrade to disc brakes, this isn't something that just comes with your standard kit.
16:55Now, this is a little bit more expensive kit, but I feel like it's worth it.
16:58So I've actually never installed one of these before, but the way this works, this looks like a little miniature drum brake and it goes right here.
17:07This goes on the inside of your rotor for your disc brake.
17:11So you just adjust this out just like you would a regular drum brake and then you have your brake cables that run to your standard OEM lever or if you didn't have that before, you can install that.
17:23So it's just kind of a nice little upgrade, a little benefit to this Wilwood kit.
17:28So before we just had stock stuff back here, stock rear end.
17:33We had stock brakes, which were drum brakes, not disc brakes.
17:38So this is a totally different setup than what we had.
17:40So I went in the back and I found some metal.
17:59It's an approximately quarter inch plate, good metal going to make some adapter plates.
18:05So what we're trying to do is use the hooker swap motor mount plates on the motor and use the stock motor mount brackets that are already attached to the frame.
18:14And with all the measurements done, this is the adapter plate that we whipped up, quarter inch plate we had in the back.
18:21Got to use the plasma cutter, one of my favorite tools.
18:24My eyes are still burning.
18:26And now I'm going to see if it goes in.
18:29Okay, so motor mounts are installed.
18:43Believe it or not, the motor is actually installed for the very last time.
18:46Transcross member is installed, bolted up.
18:48Motor plates have been modified and installed.
18:50There's plenty of clearance for everything.
18:52It looks great.
18:53Speaking of looking great, does this look normal to you?
18:55It looks a little off to me.
18:57We still got some wiring to do.
18:59I believe the pedals on the inside are supposed to be hooked to something.
19:02And something in the back is supposed to hold gas.
19:04We still got quite a bit of work to do.
19:06Once again, does this look normal to you?
19:09I don't think it is.
19:20Okay, so one of the issues we had in the past with this truck was we used the stock clutch master cylinder
19:26with a factory hydraulic clutch system.
19:28Assuming it would work the hydraulic throughout variant.
19:31Note, it does not.
19:33It moves just way too much material.
19:35It was blowing the O-ring out.
19:36The thing was leaking.
19:37So we've gone ahead and gotten a hydraulic master cylinder specifically designed for a hydraulic throughout variant.
19:44We have to make a little plate.
19:45We need to punch a hole in the middle in a couple of small spots and make it so it bolts right to the firewall.
19:49It will look clean and factory hot rod garage.
19:54Okay, plate is whipped up, drilled another hole.
19:56I mounted the hydraulic Willwood master cylinder right there.
19:59This is a three-quarter inch, small volume, just a mount.
20:03I mean, it's not like a giant brake master cylinder.
20:06It's just there to do one job.
20:08And that's move a throttle bearing like 500 thousandths.
20:12And I enlarge the holes on the firewall just a little bit.
20:19We're done.
20:24Okay, it's time to put our gas pedal in our D100 truck.
20:31So this already had a gas pedal, but what we're doing with our Terminator X-Maxx from Holley is we're going to be using the drive-by wire feature.
20:38So with drive-by wire, you are actually using electronics to say, hey, gas pedal, I'm pushing you.
20:45Throttle body, I want you to open.
20:48This is not physically pulling a cable and opening the throttle body.
20:52But instead, it's seeing voltage in the potentiometer that's in here and the electronics that's inside this gas pedal.
20:58It's sending information over to the ECU.
21:00The ECU is sending information to the throttle body and they're all communicating together.
21:05Some of the advantages are you're going to have a little bit more throttle control.
21:08Your computer has a little bit more information.
21:10There's just some different settings you can use.
21:12So we have a pedal that Holley supplied for this application, which matches our throttle body, which is a stock Chrysler throttle body.
21:20What I'm doing right now is where our stock pedal came through.
21:25It had a large hole in the firewall.
21:28Where this pedal needs to mount is basically right at that hole, almost perfectly.
21:34So I just made a nice little circular patch panel, getting ready to weld it in place.
21:39And then I can actually go ahead and move forward with mounting this.
21:42And then we run some wires, we'll be good to go.
21:45So I'm taking a break from a little cutting and a grinding and a grinding and a cutting to harnessing the power.
21:53Putting the Holley fuel injection harness in right now.
21:56We have an injection harness and a coil harness.
21:59I think there's an additional sensor harness.
22:01It's a hemi.
22:02It's new to me.
22:03I wonder if it's new to you.
22:04But I do know that it is going in and I have the right harness here now.
22:09So last night I got the radiator mounted, or I should say mounted.
22:15It's in there.
22:16It's hanging, but we're waiting to get the front clip up on the truck.
22:19That way we can actually make sure the radiator is in the correct position and make adjustments to raise it or lower it, depending on where everything falls.
22:26So once we get the front caps back off, you guys remember that, that really rusty, crusty truck bed.
22:34I'm really excited for that.
22:35We have a whole new bed wood kit that we're going to be installing.
22:39I've got to stain it.
22:40It's my wood crafting project that I'm really excited about.
22:44So we've got to cap the front, cap the back, and see if all of the stuff that we've put under the hood fits in between these two fenders.
22:52We'll see.
22:57Hey, so the coolest part about taking all the body panels off, it makes it so easy to work on.
23:00It is very good.
23:01And my back still doesn't hurt.
23:02Oh, I'm glad. That's great.
23:03Oh, they're back.
23:04Oh, hey.
23:06So, if you missed it, this is our D100 that we are trying to get to autocross for the redemption that it deserves.
23:14Because the last time we were out, it didn't even get a full autocross lap.
23:18Turn three, we made it to turn three. This time, all the way to turn four.
23:22So, our plan is, is not only are we going to go back to autocross and get like basic redemption, we're just going to annihilate every bit of sadness that it had.
23:34Yes.
23:35Are you calling the tires sadness because we're going to annihilate them?
23:38Yeah, that too.
23:39So, we did a lot of disassembly, which means we have a lot of reassembly.
23:44So, we need to get our front clip up here because a lot of the stuff that we're kind of still waiting to finish, we need to see how that's going to be positioned so we can wrap those projects.
23:52Oh, that's right. We put a whole new motor, the Hemi here, and a new radiator. Have you, did we measure this?
23:58No.
23:59Because they say measure once, cuss twice?
24:02We could be cussing in just a second or we could be celebrating.
24:06Ready?
24:07Bring it in.
24:11Take her up.
24:12Up.
24:13Stop.
24:14Up.
24:15Up.
24:16Up.
24:17Up.
24:18Up with it.
24:19You got it.
24:20Keep going.
24:21More.
24:22Keep going.
24:23More height.
24:24Keep going.
24:25What do you think this does?
24:26Don't.
24:27Oh.
24:28It'll be okay.
24:29Don't need that.
24:30I think that'll be good right there.
24:32I think that's probably about good.
24:34Bring her in.
24:37Fender's out.
24:41Okay, slow her down.
24:42More now.
24:43Hang on, we got a few wine in the way.
24:45Who put that there?
24:47Okay, so now the deal, we have to pull this out because it kind of closes the gap.
24:52Pull the whole thing towards you and slowly go down with that little lever right there.
24:57Slowly.
25:06Okay, I'm under the edge.
25:07I am not.
25:10Keep going down.
25:11Just a little bit.
25:13Stop.
25:14Pull your fingers out of there.
25:15Okay.
25:16All right.
25:19What?
25:20Whoa.
25:21That was weird.
25:22What?
25:24Huh.
25:25Wow.
25:26It actually looks like it belongs there.
25:28Am I lying?
25:29Who did the arithmetic here?
25:30It's an accident.
25:31I mean, we did it.
25:33Okay.
25:34I'm cool with it.
25:36So something that I really wanted to do, just actual project I'm excited about, is I want
25:41to do the bed wood in our truck bed.
25:44So we got a bed wood kit here.
25:47It's already pre-cut, pre-slotted.
25:49I stayed late last night to prep it, just because we just don't have a ton of time.
25:54So I got two coats of oil stain on the backside.
25:57I also got the bed right back here.
26:00I cut all of the slats, all of the old rusted hardware that didn't want to budge.
26:04Cut all that out last night.
26:06So for the most part, it's prepped.
26:07So I'm going to get this last coat on, and then we just let it dry.
26:13And then we work later.
26:18So moving back, I'm going to start pulling parts off the side of the frame.
26:21We don't need all these extra hangers.
26:23I think there used to be a trailer hitch or something on the back of this thing.
26:26We don't need that anymore.
26:27There are some muffler hangers and old e-brake apparatus up in the front.
26:30All that could potentially cause a problem in the future as we're throwing more parts at this thing.
26:35Speaking of throwing parts, there is no gas tank back here.
26:39Factory gas tank was located behind the seat.
26:41I don't really care for that.
26:43You get to smell it, potentially get to wear it if you're in an accident.
26:47We've already pulled that tank out.
26:49In addition to that, we grabbed an aluminum tank from Classic Performance.
26:52And it's a tank that fits 63 through 73 seat tents.
26:56It's a little bit narrow, but it's good for front to back clearance and height clearance.
27:01And I think this thing's going to be super low, so height matters.
27:05Awesome.
27:07Okay, so it looks like we're very close to being done.
27:11The D100 has a Hemi in it.
27:13Yes.
27:14American Powertrain 5-speed.
27:15Correct.
27:16Not just a new third member from Quick Performance, but a complete new differential,
27:20including disc brakes in the back.
27:22And we got all the new leaf springs, which if you remember, that was the culprit of our problems.
27:26We only have a few things left to do, a little bit of plumbing for the back.
27:29A couple wires to connect, a couple hoses.
27:32And of course, obviously, we've got to put the bed wood in the bed.
27:35But we're waiting on this to dry.
27:38And I would say it's going to be a real autocross machine now.
27:42Absolutely.
27:43We went from farm fresh to hot mess.
27:45Express.
27:46Because we're going to be fast.
27:47Hot mess express.
27:48Hot mess express.
27:49I like.
27:50Lucky like.
27:51Lucky like.
27:52Alex liked to finish this.
27:53Oh, really?
27:54Yeah, let's go.
27:55All right.
27:56Yeah.
27:57So we are back for redemption, and we have come with a vengeance.
28:10We're back at the exact same track that we were at.
28:13The whole race course has all been laid out last time we were here.
28:16We had a stellar three turns before the truck failed.
28:20Yeah, so if you don't remember, our Dodge D100, we had it out not that long ago at a really great autocross event.
28:27Lucky went into turn three after a little bit of concern that he might not even make it off the line because our clutch was not acting right.
28:34There was a lot of iffy stuff going on.
28:36But he made it off the line, went into turn three, and then spit the drive shaft right off the side of the truck.
28:41And then he, Lucky, coasted right into the pit.
28:43We didn't even get a time on it.
28:44I see what you did there.
28:45I know. Thank you.
28:46I will say in my defense, those first two turns were stellar.
28:49I can say they were really good.
28:51Yeah.
28:52But since this fought us and gave us trouble, we thought that we wouldn't just fix what broke.
28:56We would upgrade and then fix anything else that might be a potential issue.
29:00Anything that insinuated it was going to give us trouble the next time we got to the track, we put it to bed.
29:06We started out in the back.
29:07We upgraded the rear end to a quick performance nine inch.
29:10We did new leaf springs because that was also a major culprit of the issue.
29:13Yeah.
29:14Full exhaust all the way to the back because we had to figure out some way to get the horsepower from the, say it.
29:21Hemi.
29:22Hemi-powered.
29:23Yeah.
29:24V8 up in the front, complete fuel injected, Holley engine management.
29:28And that all feeds the American powertrain transmission.
29:30It was there last time we were here.
29:31It worked just fine.
29:32Correct.
29:33So we have something that I would say is a qualified race vehicle.
29:36And obviously today we're going to be flying right through that course and right through the cone.
29:40So we should probably go do a course walk.
29:42We're going to take the California coastal carver out on the track later after we walk it.
29:46I like that name.
29:47You like that?
29:48I do.
29:49That's good.
29:50It's actually a sandwich I had the other day.
29:51That is not.
29:52Delicious.
29:53It doesn't sound good.
29:55Okay.
29:56So this thing is sounding great.
29:57Way better.
29:58It feels driving nice.
29:59I will say this thing.
30:00As soon as we first tuned it, the throttle was sort of like jumpy.
30:03And I realized because the seats sort of sketchy that it was like me bouncing on the gas pedal and I accelerated.
30:09You were the problem.
30:10Yeah.
30:11So I do recall the start line was right around here.
30:15And we're just going to drive it right now.
30:17Look for debris on the track.
30:18I just don't feel like walking.
30:19Okay.
30:20We could have walked.
30:21We're slow driving right now.
30:22Yeah.
30:23We're just slow driving it.
30:24Hey, what happened?
30:28Apparently this thing just wants to race.
30:30Apparently.
30:31Yeah.
30:32Okay.
30:33So, so far it's looking similar.
30:34Yeah.
30:35Yeah.
30:36And I do remember this because it looks weird the way the cones are all.
30:38Yeah.
30:39But you go past this, what looks like clearly an intersection.
30:41Yep.
30:42You turn to the right.
30:43Man, this seat is bouncy.
30:44Yeah.
30:45It's just, it's going to be fun to bounce around in it.
30:48Okay.
30:49Now this is neat because you have a little, it goes that way.
30:52Yep.
30:53So you got to kick the back end over this and it gets real light.
30:56Yep.
30:57Okay.
30:58And she comes around.
30:59Very nice.
31:00And then as I recall, aim for the pole.
31:01Take a loosey.
31:02Apex to the left.
31:03Very nice.
31:04And then you can start getting some speed right here.
31:05Yeah, we got our straightaway back here.
31:06And you think you want to get close right there, but you don't.
31:07You want to go out here.
31:08Because you got to swing back.
31:09Because then you got a big long sweeper.
31:10And it's a little bit of a slalom.
31:11This way.
31:12Yup.
31:13And then this way.
31:14And then this way.
31:15And do you think you want to apex out?
31:16You don't.
31:17You stay wide and you move the apex deeper into the turn.
31:18There we go.
31:19Very nice.
31:20You go wide here and then you just dive to the outside here.
31:25And apex here.
31:26And then you move the apex deeper into the turn.
31:30There we go.
31:31Very nice.
31:32Then you go wide here, and then just dive to the outside here, and apex outward.
31:40here and apex in and this is all the way back this way this is uh this got me a couple times
31:45it's confusing yeah okay very nice cool i feel pretty good about that i think that's pretty good
31:50plus we don't have to wait in line to make multiple passes i also feel good that that's
31:54really close to how it was yeah it does seem very familiar all right uh i think it's only fair that
32:01you go first and you get your redemption i insist upon going first and getting is that okay that
32:06sounds great i'm getting my redemption okay have fun
32:19all right so i saw lucky drive it from over there to the starting line and i can say there's a chance
32:23that with his driving i may not be driving again today uh so anyways he's getting ready to launch
32:28the truck he didn't look too happy with his drive over so we're gonna see how it's gonna do but if
32:32we don't send him soon he's gonna get cranky so with that said lucky hit it all right so sitting on
32:40the line something sounds very clacky clanky i don't know what it is but it took off okay so
32:46it'll be okay it'll be fine
32:54no it's not fine is it fine
32:57we're coming up to the scene of the accident real soon like right here
33:04he is on turn three and he is not moving again how is this even possible lucky coasted right into
33:11our pit again all right it looks like he made it to turn three once again and he's coasting in
33:17oh i hear it we may not be getting redemption what did you do
33:21so in case you missed it lucky broke it all right i wasn't actually gonna say it okay we came for
33:30redemption and we're getting our booties kicked derrieres are in the air for sure that's a fact
33:37now this isn't one of those where we're like we just showed up we haven't even driven this car
33:41that's the thing this one was actually tested tuned proven dyno all of that and then out here it's just
33:47failing in real life and then it would run great and then i'm waiting for cameras and everybody to
33:52get in place it has to run for five or ten minutes waiting for people like directors and camera guys
33:57to get in place and then all of a sudden ready to go ten feet out of the gate it let it cool down
34:03start again starts up okay i think we fixed it anyway so um there are some led lights on a terminator
34:10x max which indicate different statuses of systems within the ecu um the one that kept showing up red
34:18was for a crank sensor so turning it off and back on again doesn't work but we pulled it back over
34:23here we checked the sensor earlier while there's no visible physical damage that doesn't mean that
34:27internally there is not something failing so we had to go to a chrysler dealership in uh beautiful
34:34huntington beach california correct because our local auto parts store didn't have it
34:37anyways with all that it's in the punchline we have the sensor we're gonna try it and you know
34:43what it still may not work okay we didn't make it worse there is no issue on that light right now
34:52all green all green okay based on the leds on the terminator x max we have all green lights currently so
35:00i say we take them out line them up and we see if it's gonna disappoint us once again or if it's
35:06actually gonna work you ready i am okay don't break it no promises
35:14no no no rude rude truck not nice as soon as he went out car truck started acting up comes back over a red
35:43light on the crank sensor is bad so um or it's red meaning that there's an error so we're gonna have
35:48to do some diagnosing and uh if not promise they'll still be a really interesting event don't you worry
35:58so apparently and clearly whenever you have an automotive uh an issue a performance issue with a car
36:05it's csi we are trained professionals trained professionals automotive csi so we were thrown
36:13off a little bit because on a terminator x max which is not on all holly ecu is like your dominator
36:19and your hp but the terminator x and x max have indicator lights which we keep talking about which
36:24tells you which system is having issues very specific ecu which is really user friendly
36:31it showed it kept showing the crank sensor was having an issue which we replaced right because
36:36it made sense what we were seeing was crank but then all of a sudden this last go around we started
36:41seeing another diag popping up that it was cam sensor having issues right so it's sensor issues
36:47sensor issues but like and technically it was correct now what did you find the problem was yeah a zip
36:53tie that was misplaced and a five volt reference wire touching
36:57a pipe that only would get through the plastic insulation at 190 degrees so it would get on
37:03there connection would mess it up it's sending all kinds of weird information to the ecu and it's not
37:07that it was doing it to safeguard it like the ecu wasn't doing that it doesn't know that that's an
37:12issue reacting to information it was just getting information so those sensors were going whack so
37:17anyways with that said long story short we fully believe that we can go make a lap now all right
37:21your lap time right now is like four hours so i appreciate that you're welcome it's a lot of driving
37:27don't slam my door all right so lucky has been driving like a real ticked off teenage boy by that
37:34i mean he's been acting a real fool and the truck hasn't stopped working yet so i'm gonna say by all
37:40accounts lucky legit he legit broke it um it may be fixed right now it looks fixed it appears fixed
37:47but what's not fixed is his lap time because the clock is still running and right now it's at three and a
37:52a half hours so uh lucky hit it i think that gave me the okay
37:59all right if we can just get to turn three we're doing real good so i'm gonna just drive kind of mellow
38:05that's where we lost him last time all right victory we're past three okay we've already gone
38:17further than we've ever gone before one cone down i forget about that one cone this is a little slalom run
38:25two cones three cones i don't like those cones anyway another cone those talk a lot of trouble
38:37other cone he's got three cones oh lucky go hey we just finished the lap
38:54so the tricky part about autocross is sometimes your first time is the best time for a while
39:03because once you get later in the laps you start overthinking it you think about it too much
39:08and then you start to slow down which is maybe what's happening right now he's either broke
39:13or he's wanting to go again because his time was slow
39:16i missed the shift my back
39:24wow i was like what's he doing it was looking good yeah and then you come back with the shifter
39:29in hand yeah well you know i have to say it lucky broke it lucky legit broke it you know in my defense
39:37seats unbolted it oh so you're telling me what had happened was the seat was sliding around so you
39:41just ripped the shifter out of the floor you know the way you put it like that makes me really seem at
39:45fault i'm gonna go out on a limb and say you know what people put performance seats and
39:49performance cars to keep you in place for a reason because the steering wheel and the shifter
39:54are not monkey bars this is not normal i just don't know my own strength these guns
39:59sorry excuse the drip is that what the kids are saying though it's not good don't do that that's so
40:06no hey uh hey let's walk over there i think i got all the way up first of all you had dip that
40:11we drove through that yeah that doesn't really blow in the middle of the track i was trying to
40:14keep it cool on the dip and that's when shifter bailed and i shortcut it i bet you the parts
40:20that were missing are sitting right you want to go for a walk let's go take this dog we could drive
40:24over there give me the shifter i can put it back in gear i'd rather walk i don't know that i trust
40:28you right now okay so anyways good news is we fixed one problem bad news is made another i don't know if
40:35we can fix the big problem was in the back and we fixed that we moved to the front had a problem we fixed
40:39that and now something came apart in the middle this has to be the last thing how did you do that
40:43this has to be the last thing
40:50yeah okay so today i had some wins and some losses but i think some wins i think we're done we are
40:55absolutely done i believe unless we're told to do more stuff nope there's no shifter in there i believe
41:01that the day is over all right so that is actually it for this episode but don't worry this thing is
41:07going to come back with a vengeance again this time it'll be at hrg day in bakersfield at famoso
41:12hrg day i'm very much looking forward to that me too we do have a lot of people to thank though
41:16because overall i would say that we can count this return to the scene of the accident as a win we had
41:21a really good lap time today by we i mean lucky yeah and i made it past turn three and then got a 45
