00:00Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage. I'm Alex Taylor and this is Lucky Costa.
00:04Hello.
00:04This is our project for the week.
00:07Clearly built to perform.
00:09It's built to do something. Performance is not necessarily the thing.
00:12Oh, I think you're mistaken.
00:14So we have something that is built to perform and that is a Land Speed Roadster.
00:19So Land Speed Roadster, obviously we didn't make it out to El Mirage this year, but next year we will and we need a push vehicle for it.
00:27Oh, but the reason for that is because El Mirage was not ready for us.
00:30It rained out a couple of times.
00:32But when we do go out next year, we need something to push it with.
00:37Oh, that's, I gotcha.
00:40It's a push vehicle for a Land Speed vehicle.
00:43Yes, yes.
00:44Oh, why didn't you say so?
00:45Well, we were getting there, you know, making sure you guys are all new too.
00:48So the way that a lot of Land Speed cars are geared, they can't get themselves going off the line.
00:55Super tall.
00:55Yeah.
00:55And our Roadster is in need of a push truck for just that.
01:00So this thing was stashed in the woods between Calabasas and Malibu.
01:04Yes, it's parked in the same spot since 81, sitting in the oak trees and leaves and all that.
01:09What year were you born?
01:1097.
01:11Still hilarious.
01:12But we pulled it out and it is now in our shop.
01:17Yeah, strong.
01:19Do you think it was sat there because it ran so good that you just didn't want to drive it anymore?
01:23You know, something tells me it got parked for a reason.
01:27Yes, I would say.
01:29And the force is trying to take it back from the looks of it.
01:31It's very camouflaged.
01:32It blended in very nicely.
01:34But, no, it does not run and drive.
01:35And that is currently the problem here.
01:37We fix problems here at Hot Rod Garage.
01:39We fix problems.
01:40Think of a 60s type build that we could have seen out on the salt flat as a push truck at the time.
01:47This is actually like that vehicle you would see at the salt flat.
01:50Yeah.
01:50Just full of equipment and people sleeping.
01:54It's perfect.
01:55And it's like a Suburban, but it's not.
01:57It's not.
01:58So it's a Suburbaint.
02:01Suburbaint.
02:02A Slow Burbaint.
02:04Burbaint.
02:04No, this is a 57 panel truck that somebody somewhere along the way cut their own windows into the side.
02:12And that's what you're saying.
02:12And they did an amazing job.
02:14They actually did.
02:14It actually looks really good.
02:16But, still, it doesn't run and drive.
02:18But we have parts.
02:19We're going to try to make it kind of a 60s type build.
02:22So, a small blob Chevrolet 383.
02:25We are going, though, with a little bit more of a modern transmission.
02:29And we've got a 4L60 from Gearstar, but that will make it nice and easy to drive.
02:33Well, the upside to that was back in the day, 50, 60, 70 miles an hour on the freeway was crazy.
02:39We go a little faster now.
02:40It's slow now.
02:41So, anyway.
02:41So, while land speed racing isn't happening right now, this will be its own parts chaser in the meantime.
02:46Because we know that Dulcich has some pretty cool parts that would be perfect for this period.
02:52So, we're going to use this as a parts chaser and go borrow some from him for this.
02:56So, I know we're doing a complete V8 conversion on this thing.
02:59It came with a six-cylinder.
03:00Yeah.
03:01Overdrive transmission, like we were talking about.
03:03We're not fabricating any motor mounts or anything exotic.
03:05Because this is a pretty popular vehicle.
03:07Pretty much everything you can purchase.
03:09Don't speak too soon.
03:14That's the second that stuff goes wrong.
03:16I fully expect that to be doing something.
03:18It almost bolts right in.
03:19Almost.
03:19Does not count.
03:20But, you know what?
03:21If we don't get this done, we're going to lose the shot.
03:25Like, wait, you know we're actually losing the shot, right?
03:29Actually, we really are losing the shot.
03:31Like, it's actually, this is the last time we're going to be in this shot.
03:36But that's just this shot.
03:38Just this shot.
03:39Because we're getting an upgrade.
03:41We're getting an upgrade.
03:42Is it an upgrade?
03:42We're getting an upgrade.
03:43Air 5?
03:44Air 5.
03:45With that said, though, there is a lot of stuff to move out of this shop and into the new shop.
03:51Like, a lot of stuff.
03:52Oh, yeah.
03:52Oh, my back just went out.
03:54You know, the thing is that...
03:56Don't you live in Arkansas?
03:57I do.
03:57We do this right.
03:58But, but, but, but, we can help just a little.
04:02But if we use some parts from laying in that corner and laying in that corner and throw them at this thing, which needs some parts.
04:07We have less to move.
04:08And we have a running vehicle, which can haul some stuff.
04:10You ready to get going?
04:11We should.
04:12All right.
04:13I'm going to practice on helping.
04:14Put that there.
04:15And we're going to lose the shot here.
04:17Put that over there.
04:17Put that over there.
04:18Okay, so we pushed it over and put it on the lift.
04:22We did do that.
04:23And we're supposed to act like this is the first time we're opening the hood.
04:26Okay, so channel your interactive skills.
04:29Okay.
04:32Good?
04:33Yeah.
04:33You good?
04:33Okay.
04:34Lift.
04:35Oh, wow.
04:38Wow.
04:39So, honestly, we already peeked in here.
04:42But we figured we would share it with you guys.
04:44We did sneak peek.
04:45Um, this is a six-cylinder chunk of iron.
04:49This, actually, I have to say, there's a lot of room in this engine bay.
04:54Hemi?
04:55Big block?
04:56I see where you're going there.
04:57Two six cylinders?
04:58What do you want to put in there?
04:59Well, unfortunately, that's not the case.
05:02We're just doing a small block.
05:03But I do.
05:03We're just trying to clean out the shop.
05:04I saw Hemi over there, and there are two six cylinders on a rack.
05:07Wouldn't you put it like that?
05:08All that stuff in here.
05:09So, three?
05:10Technically, we're helping to move.
05:11The idea, originally, was to just get this running.
05:14But that was not in the cards for this one.
05:17So, it's getting a small block.
05:19Yeah.
05:19So, we do have to do engine mount and crossmember, because this is totally different mount.
05:25Right.
05:26Not the same.
05:26Right now, we're going to snatch the front end off so that you can enjoy the magic that is taking apart an old vehicle.
05:32Let's do the entire thing without even taking the hood off.
05:35Okay.
05:35I mean, I can stand under everything.
05:38So, that's not a problem for me.
05:41Okay.
05:41So, let's get this all off, and we'll show you exactly what we're talking about with all these crossmembers in just a minute.
05:46That was very barbaric of you.
05:49Come on down to Winnow, big ol' land.
05:50We're giving them away.
05:50Take it over there.
06:11Okay.
06:12Now, drive that way.
06:13Beep.
06:14Beep.
06:14Beep.
06:15And we're done.
06:18All right.
06:18So, this has an interesting motor mount set up.
06:20It has a monstrous crossmember that goes between from frame rail to frame rail, right in the middle between the transmission and the motor.
06:28The back of the transmission just literally hangs out in space.
06:30And the front has motor stilts that just spin, but they don't do nothing.
06:35I'm going to get the stilts clamps right here.
06:40I could put a wrench on it, but honestly, why?
06:45We're not reusing any of this.
06:50Oh, there's another rare option.
06:51You don't see a lot of these.
06:53That's a canister-style oil filter.
06:56These early motors didn't have oil filters on them.
06:59That's basically the fountain of youth for an old six-cylinder.
07:01It's crazy.
07:02This is a fully automated cherry picker.
07:16You honestly just have to push it in, pull it back out.
07:19It's that simple.
07:20Very easy.
07:21Going in.
07:28You think Gearstar builds that?
07:30Yeah.
07:30I don't think we can afford to shift that back to Gearstar.
07:33This is a cast-iron automatic transmission.
07:35Let me check.
07:38That is one solid transmission.
07:40It's a four-speed automatic, no overdrive, though.
07:44But one-to-one.
07:45It's just really spread out.
07:46All right.
07:46Want to scrape some grease?
07:48That's actually one of my favorite things, too.
07:49Really?
07:50I really love it.
07:50There are lots of grease boogers on this thing with your name on it.
07:53That sounds fun.
07:53It's a little gross, but there's a cookie over there with my name on it.
07:56Okay.
07:56Okay.
08:00We need to put this Gearstar 4L60 with this 383.
08:07So our 383 here has just under 10 to 1 compression.
08:11It's still got cast pistons.
08:13It has AFR enforcer heads, which are kind of an entry-level head, but it actually made some
08:17pretty good horsepower.
08:18With long tube headers, it made 448 horsepower, 470 foot-pounds of torque, and it came from engine
08:25masters, had some testing done.
08:27This, we actually know, runs and works very nice.
08:30You know what?
08:31If it came from engine masters, I'm sure it's amazing.
08:33It'll be fine.
08:33It'll be fine.
08:34It'll be good.
08:35Do you think those bolt holes go all the way through the crankcase?
08:37That is a conversation that we need to have.
08:43Hi.
08:44Hey, Siri.
08:44Do the bolt holes on a one-piece or a main go all the way through the crankcase?
08:51They do not.
08:52Do you want to know something?
08:53On a side note, it's beautiful.
08:57Just right there.
08:58Read instructions?
08:59No, I don't.
09:00Yeah.
09:00It says lubricate threads of lock tie and then put assembly loom under, and it's specifically
09:05for this motor.
09:06So if you read the instructions, the dilemma doesn't happen.
09:09Really?
09:10Yeah.
09:11Tech tip.
09:12If you read the instructions, the dilemma doesn't happen.
09:15Did I say that right?
09:17You had a better tone for the first time.
09:19All right.
09:19Cool.
09:19Okay.
09:23Those look good together.
09:36They do.
09:37They make a nice couple.
09:38I think let's levitate it, and then we'll hang the transmission mount, motor mount on
09:44it, and then stick it in and see where it falls.
09:47Yeah.
09:47I get an idea.
09:48And then I'm not going to put the flywheel bolts or flex plate bolts in right now.
09:51We're not taking it back off, so when it's up in the air and it's convenient, we'll do
09:54that.
09:54Yeah.
09:54When it's not spinning freely.
09:56Yeah.
09:56That's what I'm going to do.
09:57Like Ace freely?
09:59What?
09:59Ace freely?
10:00I don't know.
10:01Yeah.
10:01Kiss Army, apparently.
10:03Oh, no.
10:03Sorry.
10:04Oh.
10:04Whatever.
10:05Whatever.
10:07Okay.
10:08Go in.
10:10Okay.
10:10So Gearstar is hooked up.
10:12We did a little modifications to the motor mount.
10:17Are we up high enough?
10:18Yeah.
10:19No, you're good.
10:20You're in the clear.
10:23Down a little.
10:24Just a smidgen?
10:25Smidgen.
10:26Just a smidge.
10:28This is giving me tater truck vibes big time.
10:30Okay.
10:31Why?
10:31Is there rust?
10:31Down just a little.
10:34All right.
10:34Back.
10:35Hang on.
10:35Let me go to that side.
10:36I think we're going to come on.
10:37Hold, please.
10:38Hold, please.
10:39Holding.
10:40All right.
10:41Okay.
10:42Going down.
10:48All right.
10:50Do you think we can maybe scoot that mount into place?
10:55Mine needs to go.
10:58Your way?
11:01Stitches.
11:02Out.
11:02Stitches.
11:03Are you in?
11:04Well, not yet.
11:07Okay.
11:08Hold on.
11:09Boom.
11:09Installed.
11:12All right.
11:13So engine is mocked into place.
11:15We have this prefabricated crossmember here.
11:18This is allowing us to use the engine mounts that are on a small block Chevy versus what was
11:23in here, which were just the front mounts with a different crossmember in the back.
11:26So this is a nice, simple piece.
11:28It's got the bar that slides in.
11:29So what we're going to do now, we have it set where we want it to be side to side and
11:33front to back.
11:34So I'm going to go ahead and weld these into place.
11:36And then once that's welded, we can take the clamps off.
11:39Then we'll work on setting the actual engine angle.
11:43And we'll be ready to move on to a trans crossmember.
11:56Stop.
11:59That was a smidge too much.
12:01Like just a smidge the other way.
12:02I over smidged it.
12:05Okay.
12:05That was a nice solid smidging.
12:07That was a smidge.
12:08Oh, yeah.
12:09Yeah, that's pretty good.
12:09The crossmember is now centered on the frame back here.
12:12Everybody happy?
12:14Everybody happy.
12:15Now we just need to go up a little bit with this, right?
12:18Yeah, a smidge.
12:20We're at five and we want three?
12:225.45.
12:24There we go.
12:24Now try it.
12:25Sorry.
12:26Okay, stop.
12:28Three and a half.
12:30Three and a half.
12:30Okay, I can go a little.
12:31Do a little bit more because it's settled and it's a little different.
12:34Just a smidge.
12:35Okay, stop.
12:36That's 2.9 right there.
12:37Okay, so that's three.
12:39Okay, so three degrees?
12:41Three degrees on the money.
12:42So that's perfect.
12:43We have the motor set in there and it's not going to fall down, but it's adjustable side
12:47to side.
12:47It is.
12:48Know exactly where the transcrossmember needs to be to achieve the three degree drivetrain
12:52angle that we're searching for.
12:53Pretty easy modification as well.
12:55Yeah, a little incision, a few stitches, just goes right back in.
13:00Yep.
13:00And then what?
13:00Are we put on the brakes?
13:01Yeah, we're going to put on the brakes, but not on this project.
13:04We do need to put master cylinder, four corners, new lines, cooling system, the steering,
13:11blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
13:12We have a lot to do, but this is where it needs to be, so come back, weld it.
13:17Yes.
13:17If we're going to chop these up, weld them, put them back in.
13:19And put some more cool parts on it.
13:21I'm down with that.
13:22Okay.
13:22So it is transcrossmember time.
13:31We have this somewhat universal kind of vehicle specific.
13:35It's good for pretty much any of the trucks.
13:38Transcrossmember.
13:38It's got the little bend.
13:39Gives you clearance for exhaust.
13:40Mount the transmissions.
13:41All handled.
13:42This is what the end of it looks like.
13:45One thing to keep in mind when you buy kits like this, there's sort of a suggestion.
13:49You could put them in just the way they are.
13:51We're not doing that.
13:52We've moved the motor around a little bit.
13:54Done some modifications to these actual pieces.
13:58Cut them up.
13:58Relocated them.
13:59Moved them over.
14:00Shortened up the actual crossmember.
14:03I'm going to weld it up right now, and then we'll go back over, and I'll show you how this thing fits.
14:06It's absolutely amazing.
14:15Okay.
14:15Crossmember is tacked in.
14:17I've clamped it.
14:17I've measured it.
14:18It's all where it needs to be.
14:20I'm going to get a silver paint pan.
14:22I'm going to touch these four spots where I need to drill a hole.
14:24I will then take the crossmember back out while they're completely on the bench.
14:27Paint it black.
14:28Drill some holes.
14:29Put it back.
14:30So, this 383 is actually a blueprint engine, and in an effort to continue to clean stuff out of the shop, this was actually from Engine Masters.
14:44So, it's now going in our truck.
14:45This has just under 10-to-1 compression.
14:47It's got cast pistons, and it has AFR enforcer heads, which are their entry-level head, but they're still a really nice piece.
14:54The cam in it is a 230-236 on a 110 lobe separation.
14:59Fun fact, it actually has a hydraulic cam profile, but with a solid roller lifter.
15:05That was a test that Engine Masters did back in Season 4, like Episode 7, if you want to watch more.
15:10But it was done in an effort to see if you could get gains with solid roller lifters on a hydraulic cam profile.
15:17The answer is yes.
15:18Get some gains and some reliability out of it as well.
15:21So, that's what this sits like now.
15:24Currently, the last time this was on the dyno with long tube headers, it made 448 horsepower, 470 foot-pounds of torque,
15:31and that is going to be perfect to go in our truck since we're not doing anything too crazy with it.
15:35It's going to be a push vehicle.
15:36It'll be perfect.
15:37But we are going to put these parts on and stuff like this just to make it look a little bit more fitting for the area that we're going for.
15:44And we're going to put all the accessories on and good stuff like that.
15:46But overall, we have a really solid combination here, and it's going to be ready to go into the truck soon.
15:52Okay, so I'm getting ready to pull the tank out.
15:54It appears that a critter of some sort has been living in here.
15:59I'm excited to see exactly what type of critter that was.
16:03Cover me.
16:04Going in.
16:07Yes.
16:08Nice.
16:08Nice.
16:29Okay, so tank is out.
16:31Apparently, these fuel tanks are very difficult to find.
16:34It does make sense.
16:35It's like a saddlebag tank inside the frame relic safe.
16:39They say it can be cleaned.
16:40It can be saved.
16:42Ah, I have my doubts.
16:48All right, so I'm good with it.
16:50So we're going to sit it out.
16:52We're going to get it boiled out, cleaned, and put back in,
16:55which probably means we'll be using a boat tank.
16:59Clean up, aisle five.
17:02So starting to put things together, finally,
17:05in that really weird, awkward starting phase where it's like,
17:08oh, this doesn't fit, and that doesn't fit.
17:11But we're going to get it figured out.
17:14Some stuff the HRG parts store has, some stuff the other parts store has.
17:19We're making progress.
17:20All right, so even though this entire vehicle looks sketchy as heck,
17:36check this out.
17:39Nice and clean.
17:41Grease looks good.
17:42Man, it would be amazing to look in here and find all new brake components.
17:49That would be great.
17:50It's not going to happen, but just saying.
18:02After getting the master cylinder and all the brake lines off,
18:05everything was dry.
18:05This thing did not drop one drip of old brake fluid.
18:09Obviously, that means that, oh, yeah,
18:11when we take these boots off of the wheel cylinders,
18:14and nothing but dust comes out.
18:17Just dirt and dust.
18:19So we're just going to change everything, including the springs,
18:22and we're going to do that right now.
18:24So the next thing we have to do is cut the rivets that hold the drum onto the hub.
18:44The hub have the wheel studs to hold the tire on.
18:47They rivet the brake drum to the hub, but just in the front.
18:54The back actually have the wheel studs that are in the axle.
18:57So we can cut that apart and then put this on there.
19:00And I just noticed that these are cross-drilled for racing.
19:04You see that?
19:05I've not seen that in real life.
19:10I've seen it on cartoons before, but I've never seen it in real life.
19:13Interested to see how that works.
19:14Right on the nut, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.
19:34Are you kidding me?
19:38Amazing.
19:40Okay, I'm going to do that three more times.
19:43I'm going to do that.
20:13Ready?
20:16Drop it a little bit.
20:18One schmitch.
20:19Drop.
20:20Okay.
20:21Back.
20:24Yeah.
20:26Coming down.
20:28Hey, how are you on your side?
20:30I'm good.
20:30I'm in.
20:32So do you think that's your salt for the last time?
20:35I actually do believe it is finally in.
20:37Sure.
20:38So even though this is in, there's still a lot of work left, but we're a little bit closer than we were.
20:42We still need to get a drive shaft.
20:44That is correct.
20:45The drive shaft, trans-linkage.
20:48Trans-linkage.
20:48We need to do some wiring.
20:50Wiring.
20:50Throttle linkage.
20:51Throttle linkage.
20:52Uh-huh.
20:52Battery.
20:53Tray mount.
20:54Uh-huh.
20:54Radiator mount.
20:55Finish the brakes.
20:56Uh, trans-cooler lines.
20:58All right.
20:58Since this is in, we have most of the stuff that we can use on it already used up.
21:02We still have a lot of stuff at the HRG speed shop.
21:06And there's a couple pieces that we want at Steve Dulcich's speed shop.
21:09We have some stuff that he doesn't know he needs yet.
21:13But he's going to need it.
21:14And he has some stuff that he doesn't know we need.
21:16So we're going to take some of our stuff and nicely trade it with him.
21:21Is that a hostage exchange?
21:23Close.
21:24Okay.
21:24Yeah.
21:25Similar.
21:26That's everything.
21:26That's it.
21:27All right.
21:27Okay.
21:27All right.
21:27All right.
21:27All right.
21:29All right.
21:31All right.
21:41All right.
21:46Let's check a couple things.
21:54Fuel pump is hooked up.
21:56Gas line is running to a gas tank.
21:59Let's not call it the gas tank, but we'll call it a gas tank.
22:02Quickest way to see if we got fuel pump.
22:07All right.
22:07We're good.
22:10There's going to be some gas in the car.
22:11Right?
22:11Oh, I see it.
22:12Floaty floats are floating.
22:14Distributor is in.
22:16Oil pressure line is hooked up.
22:2320 pounds.
22:24Thank you very much.
22:26All right.
22:26So I hopped up in this little cream puff, and they don't have any keys in the doors or glove
22:31box.
22:31Oh, a locking glove box is actually a rare option this year.
22:33No ignition key, no nothing.
22:35I actually have inherited somebody's key collection and added it to my key collection.
22:41It is a lot of keys.
22:44Just so you know, that's a few years.
22:46That's more years.
22:47That's more years.
22:48And these are all different actual year vehicle keys.
22:52And I imagine the ones for this are probably not the newer square.
22:57Usually the ignitions are a square key.
22:59Early ones like this are usually the smaller, rounder keys, the little short ones like that.
23:05That's actually a gas cap key, which fits a lot of stuff, including some Coke machines
23:09I know about.
23:10But we're going to start trying keys.
23:14Eventually, I will find one that slides right in just like that.
23:17So I know that's the correct year and style.
23:21I'm just going to keep going through these.
23:23And you're going to trip out when this thing turns on.
23:26I've actually found numerous keys that fit numerous vehicles.
23:30And I take the key off, and I give it to the person and tell them to go make a copy
23:33and return the key.
23:34And you'd be surprised how many people actually return the key.
23:38Uh-oh.
23:39Got pretty close.
23:40That's it.
23:40Did you guys get that on camera?
23:42Did you see that just happen?
23:43It just turned on.
23:45Watch.
23:46Cranky, cranky.
23:48Battery's dead.
23:49Won't start.
23:50Now I've got to go look under there.
23:54This is the key.
23:57All right.
23:58So the last card that was on here, we got from the tater truck.
24:00And it was flooding when we went to start it, making a very not happy mixture,
24:05which we think is what kept us from starting this, because everything else should be good.
24:08So I found another carb off of the HRG parts store shelf, got it swapped over,
24:13but couldn't find the fuel log.
24:14But we're still going to start it, see if it works.
24:16So I just filled the float bowls up, and it's time.
24:20With your happiest toy.
24:21Don't aim that thing at me.
24:23For many reasons.
24:23So let me just turn the key on.
24:28I don't think it needs any more gas.
24:35Can you work that fun lever right there?
24:37That's our leaf.
24:51Uh, no, actually.
24:52No, no, actually, I'm watching it spray.
24:54Yeah.
24:54No, no, no, out of here.
24:56That was the old carb had a PCB valve on.
24:58Yeah, well, this one now has an open hole.
25:01So that's just crankcase ventilator.
25:02It was definitely spraying me in the face.
25:04That's oil.
25:05I know.
25:05You're welcome.
25:07With that said, I'm quoting you.
25:09I didn't say that.
25:10You say it all the time, though.
25:11Okay, with that said.
25:12All right, go on.
25:14We're going to quit fighting.
25:15Are you debating?
25:17Debating.
25:17We're going to debate this all the way to putting a radiator, wiring up the trans controller,
25:22putting a front clip on, and driving it.
25:24Can we agree on that?
25:25I concur.
25:26Oh, perfect.
25:27All right, if not, we're going to lose the shop.
25:30I think the shop's gone.
25:31Yeah, it's gone.
25:32Gone.
25:37So we got busted?
25:38Yeah, we got busted.
25:39It turns out the carb that we borrowed that works good, it was road kills.
25:42And they want it back.
25:44That's weird.
25:45I know.
25:46I know, but we gave it back, trying to make friends, enemies, yada, yada, all that.
25:50So this carburetor actually has a longer life ahead of it.
25:55It seems like about half of what we need.
25:57So while this single 450 is a little bit small for what we want to do, it will get us the
26:01dulcetins, where we're going to get the tunnel ram from him, and then we're going to
26:05put two of these 450s on there, and it'll be perfect.
26:07Does he know that?
26:08Yeah, he'll find out.
26:09All right.
26:09Okay, so the Marmot condo is back.
26:14Less the room addition.
26:16I believe they took it apart, cleaned it.
26:18They didn't potentially take it apart, but I believe they boiled it out.
26:21Cleaned it.
26:22They lined it with something interesting.
26:24I don't know what it is, but I know it's not gas-soluble.
26:28We're ready to put this thing together.
26:29This is the replacement sending unit.
26:31That's the little float that goes inside there.
26:33It sends resistance to a wire.
26:37It makes the gas gauge do whatever this thing does.
26:40Here's the problem.
26:44Nine and three quarters.
26:4611 inches.
26:51So we're going to do a little modifications to this.
26:54I'm taking the pickup screen off.
26:57Sort of a filter.
26:58It's not really a filter.
26:59It presses right over this.
27:01I'm going to cut that, put a little bend in it, retune this.
27:04We're going to modify this thing to the tune of like three inches or so.
27:07Okay, so this is a fine blend of old and new.
27:17And I'm not talking about me and the truck.
27:18I'm talking about an old tank that's been completely reconditioned and an updated sending unit.
27:23Put these new hoses on.
27:24You can't just use any hose when you're doing fuel systems.
27:27You have to use hoses that are fuel resistant.
27:31And that's what these are.
27:34You'll know if you use the wrong hoses about a week after you put them on.
27:38Inside of your car it smells like gas.
27:42Okay, cover me.
27:43Going in.
27:45Okay, so I made a fuel center wire right here.
27:47Don't use red or yellow.
27:49Pro tip.
27:51Somebody at some point might apply voltage to it.
27:54This makes for a good 4th of July.
27:57So, yeah, with a little help from Barbara Streisand, I'm going to put this Tyrannosaurus tank in.
28:05And get over that brake line.
28:08I think we're there.
28:11Things are happening here.
28:12So, going in our panel truck, we are putting a 4060E Gearstar transmission.
28:24Since it's electronically controlled, we need a controller for it.
28:28We are staying carbureted with our small block Chevy, so we don't have, say, a Holley EFI Terminator X-Maxx or something like that that will also control our transmission.
28:37But Gearstar offers this quick 4 Gen 2 transmission controller.
28:41You can buy it from their website.
28:42Pretty neat piece.
28:44So, this will allow you to adjust shift points and firmness and torque converter engagement and lockup and things like that without having some other unit.
28:54So, this is a standalone unit.
28:56You just have this harness that plugs into the transmission.
28:58You'll need a couple different wires hooked up here, like power and ground.
29:03You also need a throttle position sensor input.
29:06So, they provide this.
29:08Since we are staying carbureted, for that, you'll have to buy, or this kit comes with that, so it gives you your throttle position sensor.
29:15If you had EFI, you'd already have that on the car.
29:18But since we don't, we'll hook this up.
29:21You can also use this unit with an ECM that was stock from your car.
29:26This will override the stock ECM, allowing you to make changes to your transmission firmness and shift points and things like that.
29:34So, pretty simple install.
29:35I actually haven't used one of these before, but from the looks of it, with the instructions provided, this should go in nicely and solve our issues.
29:48That was graceful.
30:03It was indeed.
30:13Okay, trans coolers all installed.
30:15Alex did an amazing job mounting that in there.
30:17It fit well.
30:18I ran some hoses, put them on, tightened them up.
30:20We're good.
30:21Let's put this thing down, fill it full of stuff, and hit the road.
30:26So, Steve has a lot of stuff that we need.
30:29So, we got a bunch of boxes full of wood and bricks.
30:34Is there stuff in there that's good?
30:36Yeah.
30:37All right.
30:38So, basically, since we're losing the shop, might as well clear some stuff out and get stuff that we need, like a tunnel ramp.
30:45Right.
30:45They can have that.
30:46This is full of paper towels and dirty glasses.
30:49We're actually giving them good stuff, okay?
30:51Ready.
30:51What is this?
30:52Where is this?
30:53I don't know.
30:54All right.
30:54Whatever we decided we wanted to put in there.
31:01Perfect.
31:02Seems safe.
31:02Yeah, that was great.
31:03That was great.
31:03All right, cool.
31:03Okay, hang on.
31:05Do you realize we're about to close the doors on this project and on the shop?
31:11We're actually losing it.
31:14Okay, big guy.
31:16Sounds like he's not sad.
31:17Okay, Steve, we'll see you in a few.
31:18So?
31:24I was just thinking the same thing.
31:25I know.
31:26We did it.
31:27We did.
31:27We definitely lost the shop.
31:29We lost it.
31:30I thought you were going to say, we finished it.
31:31We got it going.
31:32But we really finished it this time.
31:33No, we lost the shop.
31:35Yeah.
31:35It's, I'm sad.
31:36I'm actually very sad about it.
31:37Look at it.
31:38You've been here a couple of seasons.
31:39You've been here for quite a while now.
31:41Two seasons.
31:42This is my start here.
31:43I remember getting to do a screen test.
31:44I remember you sitting there with your feet kicked up.
31:47And I'm like, oh, man, this is awkward.
31:49Feet kicked up by the bar?
31:50Yeah.
31:50Makes no sense.
31:51And then you got your start here.
31:52I did.
31:53I actually worked off camera on Finnegan's El Camino in the first stall.
31:58And on camera with David Freiburger and that atomic fan in the second stall.
32:02This is absolutely where I started with Hot Rod.
32:04Start sleeping floors.
32:05Yeah.
32:06Didn't you say?
32:06I remember that, Drew.
32:08Here.
32:08We go way back in the day.
32:09You can have it.
32:10But first, I think we should take a cell.
32:11Can I keep this?
32:12You can have it.
32:13Nice.
32:13I hope everything's even left.
32:15Okay.
32:16All right.
32:16Sylvie.
32:19Good place.
32:20Good times.
32:21But on to the next.
32:22You know what?
32:23Next chapter?
32:24We're going to have a lot of apologies to make.
32:26We're going to be apologizing to ourself in that panel truck shortly.
32:29We're on our way to Steve Dolsage's secret lair.
32:46Yeah, I'm kind of scared.
32:49I've heard some crazy.
32:50Have you ever heard of it before?
32:51Oh.
32:51Oh, it's an adventure.
32:53I've heard.
32:54Yeah.
32:54You've ever wanted to put a bunch of paint cans on a bonfire and shoot at them with an automatic
32:59weapon?
33:00But now you do?
33:01He's got the spot to do it.
33:02Gotcha.
33:07I think last time I was there, though, they must have had 10 dogs, though.
33:11Oh, really?
33:11Yeah, all the dogs from the neighborhood hang out at his place.
33:14That's my kind of place.
33:15I don't know if they're still there, though.
33:22Look at how slow we're going.
33:24I don't know, but this is as fast as I feel safe.
33:26It was the same thing when we drove the tater truck, remember?
33:29Yeah.
33:30We started out baby steps, okay?
33:32And at one point, we were doing, like, 58.
33:35Yeah, it was very different when we drove the, uh, both flagging.
33:38Uh, 46.
33:42I think we're almost at the Mandel's freeway.
33:4446 on the freeway.
33:46So, technically, today we're getting paid by the hour, right?
33:49Yeah.
33:50All right.
33:50Let me know when you're ready to pull over and get a membership.
33:52Okay.
33:54This is the perfect use of your phrase.
33:57Mandel's like a porridge.
33:58Mandel's like a porridge, yeah.
34:06How fast are we going?
34:08This has to be a record.
34:1150.
34:12Huh?
34:12Only 50.
34:13Okay.
34:15What do you think this will do in the quarter miles?
34:18This?
34:18Yeah.
34:1930 minutes?
34:26Hey!
34:27This is a residential area.
34:29What are you doing, Lucky?
34:30Hi, Alex.
34:31Hi!
34:32Welcome to my abode.
34:33Thanks.
34:34Glad to be here.
34:34I kind of live in here.
34:35Huh?
34:35I kind of live in there.
34:37Oh, well, I'm glad to be here and out of that.
34:40Well, I heard you guys lost your shop, so you guys will be living in here.
34:43Oh, we lost the shop.
34:44We lost the shop.
34:45Hello, Lucky.
34:46What's up, buddy?
34:47How are you?
34:47Good.
34:47I like your vehicle here.
34:50It sounds like it's got some rumble to it.
34:53It's got some exhaust link.
34:54Yeah, exactly.
34:55Wow.
34:55Those are loose parts.
34:56You're hearing.
34:57No, I heard you guys swiped the motor off of Engine Masters, the 383 Blueprint motor.
35:02Is that what that is?
35:03That is.
35:03Yeah.
35:04It runs very well.
35:05I know.
35:06That was a good score.
35:07That's a good motor.
35:08I mean, driving up, it actually ran cool.
35:10Right on.
35:11The transmission did great.
35:12Shifting great.
35:13It had good power.
35:14It's just the rest of it is the problem.
35:16Yeah, yeah.
35:17That's the beauty of the whole thing.
35:18Yeah.
35:18We wrapped a lot of sketch around that motor.
35:20Yeah?
35:21To do that.
35:22No, it's got potential, so it was a good time.
35:24Good drive.
35:24Yep.
35:25Yeah.
35:25I'd say open the hood and show me, but it looks like the bonnet is strapped down.
35:30It's a situation.
35:30Oh, yeah.
35:36Uh-huh.
35:37Oh!
35:38Oh!
35:38Pretty good, right?
35:39Wow!
35:40Whoa!
35:41You're probably not used to working on stuff of this caliber.
35:44No!
35:45You have something we need that would make this area look even better.
35:49Really?
35:50Yeah.
35:51It's pretty hard to improve on.
35:52I mean, what could I possibly have?
35:55We have to have to trade, okay?
35:56Okay.
35:57Okay.
35:58Okay, well, let's see what you guys brought.
36:00Okay, let me turn this thing around, and I'll back up to the door.
36:02I do have some good stuff.
36:04I'm going to stay right here.
36:04Oh, I know.
36:11Uh, yeah, I smell lucky.
36:12I think he's pulled up.
36:13What do you mean by that?
36:15Well, it could be him.
36:16It could be the car.
36:16The car's pretty smelly at this point.
36:17Did I just witness a backhanded compliment?
36:19It's a compliment.
36:20We got lots of stuff to choose from.
36:23Oh, my gosh.
36:23I feel like I'm taking advantage of you guys.
36:25We have no shop.
36:27All right.
36:27I've seen plenty.
36:28I'll just unload.
36:31Can I borrow?
36:33Uh-huh.
36:34Oh, yeah.
36:35Yeah.
36:35And arrows.
36:37Whoa.
36:37Like that.
36:38And here's a two-pack of carburetors.
36:39Oh, my gosh.
36:41Uno and dos.
36:42Both of them.
36:42And just for fun.
36:44Yes.
36:44There's one valve cover for a V12.
36:47A V12?
36:48There's only one side, though.
36:50Super rare.
36:51We'll have to do a cash deal on that.
36:52Almost non-existent.
36:54Yeah.
36:54You can have half that sandwich, too.
36:56I mean.
36:57Uh, I don't want to take, you know, take food out your mouth.
37:00I mean.
37:01Okay.
37:02Unfortunately, you can't have the five-star shirt because we have to drive this home.
37:05We might need it.
37:07Yeah.
37:08You just got to slam it.
37:09One door shuts before the other.
37:11Yeah.
37:11If you get the sequence wrong, you can break something.
37:14And if you let it fall open, you also bust the tail light.
37:17That's actually close.
37:18That is.
37:19Yeah.
37:20Okay.
37:20So.
37:21I feel like we've brought plenty for a tray.
37:24So what can this get us?
37:25This is our max bed right here.
37:26Well, look.
37:26I don't play hardball, actually.
37:29I'm really touched that you guys would think of me and bring me all of these goodies.
37:35It's very, very kind of you.
37:37Oh.
37:37I don't know how I can ever repay you.
37:39I'll make an attempt, though.
37:40I've got something that might fit your motor.
37:43I feel like you're at Chuck E. Cheese, you know, at the little arcade games.
37:46Oh.
37:46How many tickets?
37:47How many tickets do I have?
37:49All right.
37:50Here we are.
37:51This is my stock room.
37:53I like your stock room.
37:55The organization is immaculate.
37:56That's kind of weird.
37:57It's pretty good.
37:58I mean, some of the parts, like, I don't like putting stuff up dirty, like that intake manifold.
38:02But, uh...
38:03I think this is what HRG 2.0 should look like.
38:06What's this fit right here?
38:07That is for a W2 head, dual quad setup on a Mopar.
38:11And then the one next to it's identical, except it's for a W5.
38:14This is, uh...
38:15That's for a standard Mopar, so there's...
38:18I'm saying the M word a lot.
38:19All right, look.
38:20We're here for one thing.
38:22A tunnel ram?
38:24Did you have that hidden there for a week?
38:26We thought we'd play it cool, you know?
38:27Oh, yeah.
38:28Look at everything else, but this is our goal.
38:30But, like I said, I mean, you came here with a lot of cool stuff.
38:34I know you lost the shop, and I probably could have taken advantage of that and just
38:38given you someplace to unload that, but my heart was touched, and I really want you
38:43to have it.
38:44A 15-for-1 sale?
38:45We give you 15, you give us one?
38:46Let me tell you something.
38:47Okay, okay.
38:48Now, this is in all seriousness, that particular tunnel ram, the TR-1, I think it's called,
38:53it's the old vintage Edelbrock.
38:55See, this is just weird that he does stuff like that.
38:56We tested it on kind of the brother of the engine that's in this panel van.
39:00It was a 400 small-block Chevy from Blueprint that picked up 50 horsepower versus a single
39:05plane high-performance.
39:07So this is 50 horsepower?
39:08Well, maybe 40 on a smaller engine, a 383.
39:12So, we got rid of junk.
39:13Oh, let's close this deal first.
39:15Sorry, we got rid of really, really good rare and collectible stuff.
39:19Oh, thank you.
39:19That V12 valve cover, there's only one of those.
39:21Yeah.
39:21Yeah, yeah.
39:22We cleaned out the shop, made a road trip, and got some good parts.
39:27Along with carbon monoxide poisoning.
39:28I think we're good.
39:29Yeah, that's true.
39:29I know.
39:29I'm a little delusional right now.
39:31Maybe that's why we're leaving 15 and taking one.
39:34Tell them about the rest.
39:34The rest.
39:35The rest?
39:36The rest.
39:36We have this really cool thing that you were at last year.
39:38It's called HRG Day.
39:40Wow.
39:40Second annual.
39:42Yeah.
39:42I'd love to have you at it.
39:43Yeah.
39:44Deal?
39:44Oh, yeah.
39:45I'd love to.
39:46You'll be there.
39:47That's a double deal.
39:48That's great.
39:49And also, we'd like to install this.
39:52Yeah, but, hey, we have tacos and balance house for you there.
39:55Yeah, yeah.
39:55See you later.
39:55We're just going to install this right now.
39:57Thanks.
39:57Bye.
39:57All right.
39:58Soccer.
40:00So that's it for this episode of Hot Rod Garage.
40:02Yeah, it is.
40:03It was a good time.
40:04We got a telegram and some grapes.
40:06Can I get another one of those?
40:07Yeah.
40:08So, no.
40:09Good time.
40:10Good trip.
40:11Pretty happy with the panel van for what it is.
40:15Yeah.
40:15That's good.
40:16This is the sweet stuff.
40:17That's good.
40:18Handled like a porch.
40:19Yeah.
40:19Handled like a top.
40:20But it actually drove really good as far as it felt.
40:23Good power.
40:23Right.
40:24Transmission.
40:25Did great.
40:25No problems.
40:26Gearstar.
40:26Mm-hmm.
40:27Keeping us going.
40:28And, yeah, other than that, I mean, it's really good.
40:30It's just a car.
40:31That's it.
40:32Yeah, it needs everything from the...
40:34It needs everything we didn't put in yet.
40:36This is the last vehicle that was built in the original Hot Rod Garage location.
40:42The OG HRG.
40:44Yeah.
40:45Cool.
40:45It's an odd way to send it out with this one, but it's probably because we had to move our
40:48own stuff out of the shop.
40:50I honestly can't wait to see what we do in the new spot.
40:53I know.
40:53It'll be cool.
40:53It'll be cool.
40:54So, we have a few people to thank.
40:55We do.
40:56Mikey P, first of all, for letting us use his truck.
40:58He doesn't know better.
40:59He doesn't.
41:00All right.
41:00With that said, Gearstar, as always.
41:03Oh, yeah, absolutely.
41:03This thing shifts like a dream.
41:05It literally shifts like a dream.
41:06It was amazing.
41:07Best part on the car.
41:08Except the engine master's crew.
41:11Sent us over.
41:12Small block Chevy for this.
41:13Did they send it over or did they leave it over there?
41:15We may have taken that.
41:17My bad.
41:18Okay.
41:18That works now.
41:19Thanks to Holly, as always.
41:21For making it super easy.
41:22Yeah.
41:22Engine mounts, trans mount, all that good stuff.
41:24Brother's truck.
41:26Brother's truck's actually had vehicle specific.
41:28Terry the Terrier.
41:29Thanks so much for your little appearance.
41:30Which reminds us, one more thing.
41:33Steve Dolcich, thank you.
41:35I'm wondering if you got the good end of the deal or we did.
41:38Because we don't need any of that.
41:39I don't know.
41:40We needed to get rid of stuff.
41:41Got us a tunnel ram.
41:42Yep.
41:43And we had a good time.
41:44And we got some grapes.
41:45Yep.
41:45Thanks, Steve.
41:47All right.
41:47With that said, I have social media.
41:49Do you have social media?
41:50I, too, have social media.
41:51I am mobile tech lucky on everything.
41:53I am Alex Taylor Racing, and we are Hot Rod Garage Show.
41:56Still.
41:56Yeah.
41:57We still have a shop.
41:58Right.
41:58Even though we lost a shop, we did not lose the show.
42:01That's right.
42:01We still get another season.
42:03Pretty dang awesome.
42:04And even though we get another season with more cool projects, this season is not done yet.
42:09Coming up next is HRG Day, where we celebrate with our friends and do some fun stuff like
42:14Cap Tacos and jump in a bounce house.
42:16Like you do at the racetrack.
42:17Oh, and race cars.
42:18Oh, yeah.
42:19Don't forget the cars.
42:20Yeah.
42:20Be there.
42:21See you there.
42:21See you there.
