00:00Suicidal ideation appears to be a growing trend in Trinidad and Tobago, with TNT now
00:07ranked as one of the most suicidal countries in the region.
00:11Trinidad and Tobago is ranked third according to the World Health Organization and PAHO in
00:18terms of suicide rates in the Americas. Third. So all these persons you see here this afternoon
00:26at flavor, walking and having a good time, that's smiling, that does not necessarily correlate
00:31in happiness. There are certain things that prevent health from happening, as we know. One
00:36being stigma, in terms of a lot of men still think that it is weak to seek assistance. We
00:42also found that persons are functioning from a place of high dependency depression. So it
00:48looks like somebody who is working and functioning, however, behind the mask we find that they are
00:53crumbling and falling apart. Unhealthy coping mechanisms, particularly
00:57among men, have also been noted. There's an other situation happening as well
01:02that we have found in the unit where pornography and marijuana use is actually robbing the island
01:09of productive citizens. So persons between the ages of, let's say, 18 and 35 years old are
01:17increasing in terms of their isolation. How does that look? That looks like a series of
01:21males who are having issues in terms of interpersonal relationships and also isolation. So we, this
01:29afternoon here, trying to let persons be aware that through face-to-face conversation that there's
01:35support there. The victim and witness support unit of the TTBS took its EVA initiative to the
01:41Flavor Village at the Queen's Park Savannah on Friday, providing education, outreach and support
01:48services to members of the public. This is our fifth intervention across the lifespan. However, we have
01:54found that persons interact, they call, our uptake in terms of victim intake usually increases after
02:02these interventions. So normally for a year we service like 3,500 new victims. That's new victims.
02:09After these interventions, after radio interviews, after interventions that tell the public what is
02:15happening, persons usually reach out for help. Interested persons can contact the unit at 612-0301
