00:01On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, we're going to Bimini in the Bahamas aboard Team Starbrite.
00:05We're going to be doing some deep dropping for Yellow White Snapper and going on the hook for Yellowtail.
00:09Stay tuned. One incredible adventure coming up.
00:12George Bovarumo's World of Saltwater Fishing. Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:42This trip has been a long time in the planning process.
00:51Here I was in Fort Lauderdale with our production team and aboard Team Starbrite.
00:58Now, Starbrite, as you know, is a longtime sponsor, and we talked about getting together, and it finally happened.
01:05We jumped aboard Team Starbrite, which is a 66-foot Viking from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini,
01:10and we're going to have a lot of fun doing some deep dropping and yellowtailing.
01:15So we met at the boat, Peter Dorneau and Gregor Dorneau.
01:20We had our team. We had Turner with us and Captain Chad.
01:24First of all, I am Starbrite, okay?
01:28I made Starbrite.
01:31We started from nothing, and we grew to the biggest marine operation that's out there.
01:35We had a lot of fun. He started in 73. We were mainly an automotive company.
01:40And he brought in a bunch of automotive guys and really was doing a great job with that.
01:44And we launched a marine product line just kind of on the side, and it kept growing and kept growing.
01:50And I think his passion for boating came out and said we kind of made a shift, what, in the early 80s?
01:54We started shifting more to marine.
01:56True. And basically, the automotive industry were a bunch of thieves, and the marine industry were good people.
02:03I'm Chad. I've been with Starbrite as a captain for almost two years now, but I've been with the family for a long time as a friend.
02:09I'm Turner Berwick, marketing director for Starbrite, but also been with the family for a long time.
02:15You know, Greg is my uncle's best friend.
02:18I remember my youngest memories running down the dock and cleaning the boat, you know, from the old Viking to this Viking,
02:24and, you know, had some great memories with the Door Now family.
02:27And it was going to be an easy trip for me in that I didn't have to travel to the Mark VI launch and run my center console over there.
02:33And it was going to be sort of, I guess, what you call a busman's holiday.
02:45The whole deal on the trip would be doing some deep dropping and then going on the hook to Yellowtail.
02:53So, it was sort of a snapper expedition.
02:56You know, we're going to be based on the Bimini Big Game Club.
02:58So, we have a lot of spots down to the south of Bimini, anywhere from 15 to 30 miles.
03:04And, of course, you start going up the opposite direction to around Great Isaacs and out towards the Gingerbread.
03:10Near that channel, you have a lot of options up there, too.
03:13Well, I chose the Gingerbreads for two options because we're going, that time that day, we were going to Deep Drop and Yellowtail.
03:19The great thing about fishing, you know, in the Bahama waters, you don't have to travel far to do both.
03:24Left the big game after clearing customs.
03:27And we headed up there to spend the afternoon doing some deep dropping.
03:31One of the incentives that I had to go ahead and do the Deep Drop was that we had the new Penn Fathom Electrics.
03:39And I wanted to get the hang of actually using this for the very first time.
03:44And Gregor, Dorno, they already had a couple of those units there, too.
03:47So, the good thing about that Penn Outfit, it's portable.
03:52You don't need to plug it into any power.
03:54You have batteries that will supply the power that you need to do the Deep Drops.
03:58And if you still prefer to hand crank, you had the hand crank option, too.
04:02So, this will be my first time learning that outfit.
04:06And also, you know, learning a couple of good spots out there from Team Starbright.
04:10There we are on the Starbright Team Boat.
04:13Getting ready to do some deep dropping around 900 feet of water.
04:15Basically, trying to catch ourselves some dinner with the goal being yellow eyes.
04:20Let's see what happens.
04:22Well, we asked if you had any great Deep Drop spots.
04:24And you said no.
04:25So, we went to our secret Deep Drop spot in the far side in the channel.
04:30And it became successful, as you can see from the filming.
04:33What do you got?
04:34Looks like you got skunked.
04:36I got skunked.
04:36They cleaned me up and got everything.
04:39What I call this is they caught me sleeping.
04:42Deep dropping can be a dangerous drinking game because it's about one beer to get down and one beer to get up.
04:50I got color.
04:52All right.
04:53I got color.
04:58Oh, look at them.
04:59They are beautiful.
05:00Stretch there, kid.
05:02Oh, my God.
05:02We got a triple.
05:04I got to get a picture of that, too.
05:05Hold it like that, gents.
05:07He's got to embarrass me.
05:09You, George, you pulled up too quick.
05:12You could have had four.
05:13It's one of our favorite spots.
05:15It's always productive.
05:17And don't give out those numbers to anybody.
05:20George Fovaromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by
05:24Penn.
05:24Let the battle begin.
05:26Mako.
05:27You'll find them where the fish are.
05:29Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's.
05:30Your adventure starts here.
05:32Mercury Marine.
05:34George, we'll be right back.
05:36With Peter and Greg Dorno's favorite yellow-eye spot off Bimini locked in,
05:40we were set to deep drop to nearly 1,000 feet.
05:43I'm fishing with Team Starbright off Bimini, Bahamas.
05:47Now, I've got to tell you, as long as I've known, you know, Gregor and Peter Dorno,
05:53when you look at the dynamics of that father and son, it's almost a comedy routine.
05:58Both of them are really hardcore in what they do.
06:01They're perfectionists.
06:02And they're funny when they start getting on to each other.
06:04Peter, you want to circle around and see?
06:06For a spot where you can actually find them?
06:10Tell me what you're saying in English.
06:12We're ready now.
06:13Do you want to move us to the spot?
06:14We're ready.
06:14So go ahead and get on the spot.
06:15Sorry.
06:15Not a problem.
06:16Try getting down quickly.
06:18Getting down quickly.
06:20It's 1,000 foot.
06:21I like to bring it up fast.
06:23Greg likes to bring it up slow, saying, oh, he's going to pull the hook out of his mouth.
06:28And thank God that they do it my way, because his way, the sharks get everything.
06:32So that's our philosophy.
06:34We argue over that.
06:36I've never lost one coming up fast.
06:38That's number one.
06:39He's lost a lot of fish coming up slow.
06:42Anderle, anderle.
06:43Eba.
06:44He's getting bit like crazy.
06:47You're not paying attention.
06:49And this was going to be basically a tough love trip.
06:51I'm used to practicing tough love on my boat, too.
06:54Peter's up there in the bridge.
06:56And that's what he loves to do.
06:57And Peter gets us lined up on the spot.
07:00We can get those spots and try to hit it with the fast drift.
07:04Then we're going to get three, four fish at a time.
07:07They're down there.
07:08We just have to try and get that spot.
07:10And it's not easy.
07:12He would mark the fish, and he would say, drop.
07:14And I see the fish, and I yell, drop, drop, drop.
07:16And they're sitting there picking their nose instead of fishing.
07:20I was using the 80 Fathom with an eight-pound weight.
07:25And then the 30 Fathom was being used with a five-pound weight on the other side.
07:30And we're dropping these things like bombs down there.
07:33Finally hit the bottom, engaged the drag, and then just watched the rod tip.
07:38Tighten the drag.
07:39You want the drag tight.
07:41Got my first nipple.
07:43You might have a little group around there, George.
07:45George.
07:45Yeah, I got color.
07:46Nice one, nice one.
07:56That's a good-sized one.
07:58If you'd have left it down there, you'd have had four of them.
08:02Yeah, they're biting different, though.
08:03It's almost like the tide changed a little.
08:05It could be.
08:09What do you say?
08:10There's a nice four-pounder?
08:11Ah, you tell me.
08:12This is your area here, and it's what you do a lot of.
08:14That's a nice one.
08:17Gorgeous.
08:17So this thing, that thing's been there about 900, close to 1,000 feet down.
08:20Yeah.
08:21About 930 feet.
08:2340.
08:2530.
08:25I see color.
08:26I got color.
08:28I see color.
08:28And another one ain't coming.
08:35Yeah, that was a strange bite there, Chad.
08:38You know, like they hit aggressive for a minute, and then backed off, and I thought I had nothing.
08:42But look at that.
08:43Every bait cleaned off.
08:44Yeah, but look at that.
08:45He wasn't coming off.
08:46He got double hooked.
08:47Oh, come on, baby.
08:59How'd we do?
09:00Ah, not too shabby, huh?
09:03Not too shabby.
09:08Oh, oh, look.
09:09It's got a finger in its mouth.
09:11It ain't somebody's finger.
09:13These things are predators.
09:27Day one was drawn to a close, so we headed back to the Bimini Big Game Fishing Club.
09:32Dinner that evening was amazing.
09:34Team Starbright grilled up New York strip steaks, made a unique rice dish, and really put the Caesar in the Caesar salad.
09:41It was truly a feast, fit for Poseidon himself.

10:07George, we'll be right back.
10:09With dawn approaching and more outstanding weather on tap, we headed back to the Revere Deep Drop numbers for a few more yellow eyes before shallowing up for some yellowtail action.
10:20I'm fishing off Bimini Bahamas with Team Starbright.
10:23But first, let me tell you about the Bimini Big Game Club Resort and marina.
10:28The historic Bimini Big Game Fishing Club was established in 1936.
10:32Located a mere 52 miles from Miami, I made my first crossing here in 1979.
10:37The property has 35 standard hotel rooms, a series of dockside cottages, and even penthouse suites.
10:45Amenities include a most refreshing swimming pool with a Hemingway's poolside rum bar, hammocks, game area, outfitter shop, liquor store, and their Bimini Seafood Company and Conk Bar.
10:57Robbie Smith heads up the Bimini Big Game Club's 75-slip arena, which accommodates yachts up to 140 feet.
11:05To really appreciate the Big Game Club experience is to rent a golf cart and explore the historic island.
11:11You'll be hard-pressed not to stop and enjoy lunch at a local conk shack or pick up freshly baked Bimini bread.
11:17It's a fun place with a lot of diverse fishing opportunities surrounding it.
11:21Chad and I definitely work as a team for every meal.
11:24You know, we really try to deliver as best a meal as we can.
11:27You know, like you're on a mega yacht in a fine restaurant in the Bahamas, essentially.
11:32I had everything set up and ready to go for the trip.
11:34One of the most important things, I've got plates.
11:37We had $40,000 in fuel, $20,000 in steaks, $20,000 in baits, and we didn't have one paper plate.
11:46Went to Robbie, and Robbie saved the day and gave us some plates to eat.
11:50We had to keep Poveromo on us.
11:52We had to let him show he was roughing it a little bit, right?
11:54Absolutely.
11:54You know, he can feel he's on his mako and has to eat on a, you know, napkin.
12:01The tide had to get right.
12:02Chad was saying, okay, we got the incoming tide starting around 10 or 11, somewhere in there.
12:07He said, why don't we go back out to the numbers, deep drop again for a little bit,
12:11and then when that tide becomes ripe, let's get in and go on the hook.
12:14I brought some yellowtail numbers, and we'll get on that.
12:18He said, all right, so back up the deep drop spot.
12:21There's a continuation of where we left off.
12:23Peter got us right on that patch of fish.
12:26Bam, bam, bam.
12:27The whole debate whether he re-winds fast or slow was still going on,
12:30so the comedy show continued.
12:33I'm getting bites.
12:34There we go.
12:34Oh, yeah, that's good bites, George.
12:36Let them go a little, Georgie.
12:38Let them bite.
12:38Let them bite.
12:39We need fish.
12:40And I've got a fish.
12:42Here we go.
12:43That's what you call old school.
12:47We probably lost five of them.
12:49Got it?
12:50No, he actually has all of his other bait.
13:00One nice yellow eye.
13:02Beautiful fish.
13:03So the prettiest part of this fish is right here.
13:11It's called the filet.
13:19And right now, as we're dialing in the batteries,
13:22it seems like we can do 10 to 12 drops in 1,000 feet
13:26on one battery so far, but total winner on these 10 fathoms.
13:31Love them.
13:37Really beautiful yellow eye snappers.
13:39I think a couple of the big ones, we put them on the boga grip,
13:42they came in at four pounds.
13:43That's, at least to me, that's a big yellow eye snapper.
13:46And I was having a ball just learning the subtleties of the deep dropping.
13:50The yellow eye, also known as silk snapper,
13:54inhabit deep offshore waters, primarily between 200 and 1,000 feet,
13:58where they forage primarily on crabs, shrimp, and fishes.
14:00Their yellow irises distinguish them from similar-appearing vermilion
14:04and red snappers, which have red irises.
14:07Thriving in deep cold depths, yellow eyes are amazing table fare.
14:11Best bet, drop during a light current, remain in contact with bottom,
14:14and alternate bait choices to find the most desirable one on that day.

15:13Visible results are a highly polished-like finish, one that's easy to maintain.
15:18Look no further than my Mark VI for a glowing testimonial.
15:22Now, let's get back to fishing.
15:24From the deep, 900, 959, 80-foot depths to the shallow, 70 to 80-foot, we're going from
15:32yellow eyes to hopefully a lot of yellowtail.
15:35Well, you know, our captain brought a variety of baits, and we had everything you would want
15:39from squid to silversides to ballyhoo to live pilchards.
15:44But I did notice with Turner and Greger and myself that those yellowtail were way, way,
15:50way far back.
15:51Yep, it's definitely a balance.
15:53You know, sometimes you're using some light fluorocarbon so that the fish aren't seeing
15:56them, but you're cranking that drag down and cranking as fast as you can, almost like a
16:00topwater for the shark sometimes.
16:01Those yellowtails are skipping across the surface, and we had sharks, you know, busting the surface
16:05to hit those yellowtail.
16:06You're freelining your bait.
16:08We're using little jigs and putting silversides.
16:10I know Greger was putting ballyhoo, it was a whole mix of the bait we were using, even
16:14squid got into the game here.
16:16But, you know, sometimes you have to have a crew member take a sacrifice and throw on
16:19a wire rig and distract the sharks for the rest of the guys.
16:22You got the wire, we're going to see what it is now.
16:24Nice and smooth, keep that drag light.
16:28Come on, you squirt, reel.
16:31Let's take it, let's just make sure 100%.
16:34It's a shark, there's our, right on.
16:36I got to appreciate you for making the effort on our behalf, at least get one of these sharks out.
16:40of here.
16:41Yeah, all right, now come on, I hope it's the right flavor, Peter.
16:45Not Peter, Arnold.
16:47Greger.
16:50And he's got ourselves a tail, here we go.
16:53Oh, get it, there's, oh, that was, Remar.
16:54Remar's right there.
16:56Greger, there you go, broke the eye, so we know they're there.
16:59You always catch the small one first.
17:02What do you got, George?
17:03Half a yellowtail.
17:04Half a yellowtail.
17:06There you go.
17:06Still alive, throw him back.
17:15George, it's not April, but it looks like it was time to pay the tax, man.
17:20Yeah, we're doing our fair share of that.
17:23Well, that charcuta was nice, he left us about half the fillets.
17:26Little Turner, who will really annoy me because he will always catch the biggest yellowtail.
17:33Wherever you are, he'll catch the biggest yellowtail, and that's one of those things where I don't invite him anymore.
17:39No, I'm just kidding.
17:40But he really does have, he's that yellowtail whisperer.
17:43Come on, get them all, sir.
17:45There we go.
17:48He's got a flag.
17:49Chad, on the other hand, will always find that other awesome fish around, whether it's a giant mutton snapper, or in this case, we've got some really nice strawberry groupers.
18:00Nice strawberry.
18:00Strawberry.
18:02There we go.
18:03Okay.
18:05That's not bad.
18:06Not at all.
18:07It's only a matter of time before we got into them.
18:09Our crew is our family.
18:11Our captain is our family, and so it's, everybody fishes.
18:14We all have fun.
18:15We're all competitive.
18:16We all fight for rods from that point of view, and, you know, may the best man win from that perspective.
18:22The race against the sharks.
18:24This is a workout and a half.
18:26I guess I lost.
18:27Yeah, you did.
18:28You were a little bit slow.
18:29I sacrificed.
18:30I did this on purpose.
18:31Your lap time was a little bit slow.
18:33Teamwork makes the dream work.
18:34You know what they say, if you ain't first, you're last.
18:38With plenty of yellow-eye and yellow-tailed snappers iced down for the entire crew and
18:46sharks moving in to feed, we racked our outfits and headed back to the Bimity Big Game Club.
18:51Here, we experienced a different kind of shark activity.
18:55It makes it fun.
18:55You know, it makes a show within itself.
18:58You get back to the dock, you're fileting the fish, and you get to play with the big bull sharks
19:01behind the boat.
19:02It's like walking your dog on the back of the boat.
19:08And if you fall in that water there, I don't know how that thing's going to end, but probably
19:13not well.
19:15What I was waiting for was the fresh catch dinner that night, where we had an opportunity
19:20to have our yellow-eyes and yellow-tailed snapper.
19:23And I've got to tell you what, they were cooked amazingly well.
19:27And there's really nothing better than catching fish that, you know, that morning and eating
19:36them that night.
19:37It's just a sensation to feel all the way around.
19:40And so the meals were really incredible.
19:43And the stories were even more incredible than that.
19:46And it was just a really fun time.
19:48And one of those trips that you really hate to see draw to a close.
19:51It was, you know, two days, and then in the morning, we had to head on back to Fort Lauderdale.
19:57I think we all have to agree, it was a fantastic trip.
20:00The crew was great.
20:01George was great.
20:02We were great.
20:02The food was great.
20:03The weather was great.
20:04You can't ask for anything more being in Bimini with all of those aspects coming together.
20:10And we're looking forward to that next trip to that new big fishing horizon.
20:15So it's coming.
