Forensics: Crash Scene Investigators - Season 2 Episode 1

Short filmTranscript
00:00When there's a fatality or a serious collision, I need to establish how and why are the fatals
00:09occurred. Is the patient breathing? Confirmed fatality. This is all quite confusing at the
00:16minute. It's the same as a murder investigation. Your story was credible until you started
00:24tending lies. When collisions are fatal, or life-changing, the crash team is called in.
00:37We're dealing with the worst day of somebody's life. A split second, that's it. Everybody's
00:41life has changed. You only get one chance at a collision scene. Once that road reopened,
00:46there's no going back. Police! He knows very well what's happened here.
00:53The story doesn't stack up. Using forensic detective work. The answers are there.
00:59It's just knowing where to look for them. The tiniest detail can solve a case. And the
01:03latest technology. Technical data does not lie. Dashcam, CCTV, it's everywhere. The driver's
01:09travelling 127 miles per hour. These are the people who look for answers. That damage is
01:17possibly a deliberate act. Are you the person that's killed this pedestrian? I'm an awful man. If
01:23there's an offending driver, you want justice to be served.
01:28Collision investigation is very much like a jigsaw puzzle. It's only at the end when you've
01:46put the jigsaw together in its entirety that you fully understand what's happened in a collision.
01:51If you're not passionate about the investigations we deal with, it's a really tough job to do.
01:57I'm doing service.
02:10Someone's just been knocked off the bike on the 857. Is the patient breathing?
02:15Is he breathing? Is he breathing?
02:18He's breathing just. Only just, though.
02:21Is the patient awake? Are you awake? Can you...
02:24No, he's not awake. No. Okay, does his breathing sound noisy?
02:30He's stopped breathing. He's stopped breathing.
02:32He's stopped breathing. Okay.
02:36Right, tell me exactly what's happened.
02:38A car's come speeding up and knocked him off his bike.
02:42And he's laid in the middle of the road.
02:44There's an ambulance in the queue that's just put his lights on.
02:47I think it's coming up to us.
02:49Right, okay. The ambulance is there. Are they with the patient now?
02:53They are, yeah. Yeah, they are.
02:55Just doing CPR.
02:56We're just getting a team leader coming, okay?
02:58Oh, all right.
03:00Yeah, we're getting that sorted, okay?
03:03Another closer, please.
03:18Near Sheffield, as traffic officers arrive,
03:22medics are fighting to save an 81-year-old man
03:25hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing.
03:29Another closure, please.
03:32Toddy, roundabout, 8.57 towards M1.
03:36Yes, yes.
03:37And if we can request hard closures, please, at an early stage.
03:41Also, request forensic collision CPR still in progress.
03:45Yes, mate.
03:46Yes, yes, all of a sudden.
03:48He's witnessed everything, he's in 80, 90 mile an hour,
03:50it's in point of impact.
03:52Carry on, see what direction at roundabout, just a goal.
03:55All right, so it's failed to stop.
03:57It's a failed to stop RTC of this,
04:00the car that has hit him,
04:02has made off towards Toddy roundabout.
04:05Just confirm, is it failed to stop, basically?
04:07Yeah, Roger.
04:11Roger.
04:14With a suspected hit and run,
04:15South Yorkshire crash investigator Joe Binley is called in.
04:21We're on routes to report of a failed-to-stop road traffic collision,
04:25which has taken place on the A57,
04:27just off of the M1 motorway.
04:29The reports are they've got a seriously injured pedestrian at this time,
04:35or cyclist, we're not sure,
04:37who has been worked on by ambulance staff.
04:41Technical details on that.
04:42Potentially a Golf R.
04:45See if I can get your colour, stand by.
04:47Do you know what colour car it was?
04:50Dark.
04:50Dark blue.
04:51Dark blue.
04:51Dark blue, Golf R.
04:53CR1, apparently it's a dark blue coloured Golf R
04:57that's actually collided with the cyclist and then made off.
05:02Yes, sir.
05:02With a description of the suspect car,
05:05control dispatches a force-wide alert.
05:09CR1, she's saying it's possibly a clone,
05:12but yeah, I might be aware of it.
05:14Roger.
05:18There's a number of reasons why people decide not to stop at scenes of collisions.
05:23Sometimes it is out of fear,
05:25so they've driven off because they're scared of stopping,
05:27or they've not stopped on purpose,
05:29and it's an intentional act on their part of not stopping,
05:31because they want to flee the scene,
05:33because there is something to hide from us.
05:38As Joe responds, there's an update from the scene.
05:42No, just stop it.
05:42All right.
05:46CR1, that's life pronounced extinct at 15.35.
05:54I'll show the time, please.
05:56CR1, 15.35.
05:59When people die, regardless of circumstances,
06:06we need to answer the questions to the family.
06:11Who, why, and how.
06:15It's the same as a murder investigation.
06:18Yeah, just to confirm, this is now a fatal, fatality.
06:22Can I get the number for the coroners, please?
06:25Joe will now lead a manhunt for the casualties killer.
06:31That van, that van, that's the only two witnesses.
06:34What have you seen, then?
06:36Basically, we were coming up here.
06:38We were coming to a stop, because we were behind this van.
06:40Yeah.
06:41Yeah, it's been another scene, and fire up in there, and that golf shooter.
06:43I think golf slowed down, then he shot, and he went that way.
06:47Yeah.
06:48That went up in there, and then that just kept going.
06:51All right, that's fine.
06:54We've got two witnesses who were near to the traffic lights at the time of the collision,
06:58and we know that the deceased was believed crossing the road from the left-hand side into the central island.
07:02And it's now important for us to start working and piecing together and confirming that vehicle
07:07and trying to locate it and the driver of that vehicle.
07:10Just making sure that you're aware, Paul, that that golf that you're in with the vehicle
07:15is reacted to one of my lost wayside about probably an hour ago.
07:22She might have some dashcam footage which captured the identity of the driver,
07:26but if that's something, you're used to yourselves.
07:30Reports of a golf R before the collision
07:33could provide key evidence for Joe.
07:37Dashcam CCTV is so crucial to our investigations now.
07:44Someone's version of events can always have a spin on what happens,
07:48whereas a video doesn't lie.
07:50Technical data does not lie.
07:52Yeah, it will be, mate.
07:54We think it might be this close.
07:58The finding of this vehicle and the suspect is paramount in importance,
08:01not only for the evidence that the vehicle can give us
08:04to assist us with the investigation into the collision,
08:06but also there's a risk to the public.
08:08We know how the vehicle's been driven from witnesses.
08:10We know what it's just caused to the deceased.
08:13So there's a risk to the public that it may do something of a similar nature.
08:16So it's crucial that we take the vehicle,
08:19get the evidence from that vehicle and identify the suspects.
08:22I've not been made aware of this potential job,
08:25just to keep an eye out on the border.
08:26And also, I know A&PR were doing some kind of work.
08:30Have they managed to do anything yet?
08:34Police are checking automatic number plate recognition cameras
08:38for the golf that fled the scene.
08:39While we've been in process of securing the scene and closing the road,
08:45a number plate has been found at the bottom of the A57
08:48on the roundabout itself.
08:51That number plate comes back to a golf.
08:55We've now got some CCTV footage of a golf
08:57with damage to the front end of it
08:59without a front number plate going round Todwick Roundabout,
09:01heading in towards Kiviton Park area.
09:03It's now a matter of trying to trace that vehicle
09:14to where it is at its current time.
09:19With forensic work underway at the scene,
09:22debris in the road may also provide a vital link to the golf.
09:27It's always concerning that someone has been in such involvement
09:32in such an incident like this one
09:33and showed disregard to anybody or anyone who's injured
09:37and left the scene with no reasonable reason why you would do that.
09:43Things do happen, mistakes do get made,
09:46but then to leave someone on the floor
09:49with no way around him is unacceptable.
09:52With Joe and the forensic team leading the investigation,
09:56the hunt is on for the cyclist's killer.
10:02It's three hours since an 81-year-old cyclist, Graham Slynn,
10:23was fatally injured at a pedestrian crossing
10:25after being hit by a speeding blue VW Golf.
10:28OK, so priorities from this point on then, Joe,
10:34in terms of where we are with that.
10:36CCTV footage has been found,
10:38showing the car speeding away after the collision.
10:44Obviously, we're happy that we know it's the golf
10:47that we suspect it being, although on the false plates.
10:50South Yorkshire collision investigator Joe Binley
10:53is leading the case
10:54and updates Inspector Matt Collings.
10:58The footage that we've got
10:59from just after the collision at the bottom of the road,
11:01we've now established the number plate which falls off it,
11:05which we know is being used on that vehicle.
11:09You can just see,
11:10as the vehicle tries to push its way through traffic,
11:12trying to get away from the scene,
11:14the number plate falling just to the lines,
11:16so we're satisfied that we know the vehicle.
11:18As well as showing the identity of the car,
11:20the CCTV reveals other key evidence.
11:25When the vehicle then manages to squeeze its way
11:27onto the roundabout,
11:27you get the first clear view of the damage
11:30to the front end of it.
11:33You can see the damage to the front bumper,
11:35the headlights and the wing mirror.
11:41The police have intel that this car
11:43is regularly used by a pair of brothers
11:45who live in neighbouring Derbyshire.
11:47I'll crack on, guys.
12:03Thank you, everybody, for coming.
12:04Short notice.
12:06Eleven hours into the hunt for the suspects,
12:09Derbyshire officers working with Joe
12:10and his colleagues in South Yorkshire
12:12plan to arrest the two brothers
12:14in an early morning raid.
12:16We're going to go to two addresses in Chesterfield.
12:20First one, where we've got confirmed information
12:23that Cain Byrne is tagging to that location now.
12:27That was checked probably 20 minutes ago now.
12:30There's only a finite amount of officers
12:32that we have available to an investigation,
12:34so to have the support of another force
12:36and the officers they bring
12:38is actually paramount to this investigation.
12:40Adam, can you be the arresting officer for Cain if he's located?
12:45As far as I'm concerned, we know he's in there,
12:48so we'll just go straight in and put the door in.
12:49Ned, can you be the arresting officer
12:51at the second address, please?
12:53Just be aware that both suspects
12:56have got warning markers for a scaper.
12:58Cain has extensive history with the police
13:04from mine and motoring offences,
13:07failing to stop, driving with no licences,
13:10dangerous driving and not stopping for police.
13:16They should be disqualified from driving
13:18and shouldn't be driving,
13:19so it's time that they now get processed
13:21for the full extent of the law.
13:23These brothers, they've been about the block a long time.
13:31They will do absolutely anything
13:33to stop us catching them.
13:39Just feel, you know,
13:40when we pull up at the address,
13:42would you yourselves be able to
13:43look up at the back for us, please?
13:45The crucial evidence police need to find
13:48is the blue gulf.
13:50Yeah, that's just you.
13:51It could contain forensic proof
13:53of which brother was driving.
13:57One of the brothers is on tag
14:00and he is definitely at the address
14:02according to his tag.
14:04That gives us a power of entry under law
14:05to go into that address and get him.
14:07Multiple officers, including firearms,
14:27are called in for the raid.
14:28Police!
14:42Police!
14:43Police!
14:44Is Cain in?
14:45Where is he upstairs?
14:47Go sit down there for me, please, look.
14:49Go sit down there.
14:50I've got some clothes on, Cain.
14:54Right, at this moment in time,
14:56you're under arrest on suspicion
14:58of causing death by the Englishman.
14:59What?
15:00What clothes?
15:01My colleague will grab clothes for you.
15:03Is that your phone on the side, Cain?
15:07Yeah, that's my mum's.
15:09Where's your phone?
15:10I ain't got one.
15:11You took my phone a couple of days ago.
15:13No.
15:13All right.
15:14Welcome to the car.
15:16With an incident like this,
15:19speed and time is of the essence.
15:21It takes an amount of time
15:23to get through a door
15:23into somebody's property.
15:25And in that time,
15:27they can be disposing of phones,
15:29trying to delete evidence,
15:31trying to hide or dispose of things.
15:40At another address in Chesterfield,
15:42a second team is closing in
15:44on the other brother.
15:46All right, chat.
15:50Hey, mate.
15:50You going to come to the door?
15:53Cheers.
15:56It's coming in now.
15:57It's coming in now.
16:01How's it going?
16:04You under arrest on suspicion
16:06of causing death by the Englishman's driving?
16:08What do you mean?
16:09Necessary for a prompt
16:10and effective investigation.
16:13It's one of the ferries upstairs, all right?
16:15They know police tactics,
16:17so the reason that we needed
16:18to deal with these roadbustling quickly
16:20is that they will not hesitate
16:22in disposing of evidence.
16:24They will not hesitate
16:25in trying to run.
16:27I will get boarding up range,
16:35but any issues,
16:36just give us a call, all right?
16:38With both brothers under arrest,
16:41police assess the evidence
16:42found at the first address.
16:44By his bed,
16:46where he was located,
16:47found a VW key.
16:49I can't see any VW
16:50parked outside at the moment.
16:52Obviously, it's VW involved
16:53in the incident,
16:54and the key will be matched
16:56with the vehicle
16:57to see if it is the same key
16:59for the vehicle.
16:59The keys could be vital
17:10in linking the brothers
17:11to the hit-and-run car.
17:14Just watch your steps, mate.
17:18These are one of the most
17:20serious incidents
17:21the police investigate.
17:23It's on the same level
17:24of a homicide investigation.
17:26In this collision,
17:27the suspects are a true risk
17:28to the public.
17:30So it's important
17:30that we investigate it
17:32and prosecute them
17:32to the full extent of the law
17:33to reduce that risk.
17:40So I've just come to speak
17:41to the Firearms Sergeant
17:43that's enforced on this address.
17:45Scott arrives to oversee
17:47the investigation
17:47at the second address.
17:51There is still no sign
17:52of the Blue Gulf.
17:57It would be nice
17:58to get the car now.
17:59No, what would be nice
18:00is if one of those car keys,
18:03either yours or ours,
18:05because they're both VW keys,
18:06we'll just need one of them
18:07to open the car now.
18:09I think they've got enough
18:10help.
18:11I hope so.
18:11Yeah.
18:12It's got...
18:13All you hope is that
18:14they've not gone so far
18:16as to burn it out
18:17or put it in a garage.
18:18It could be in a lock-up
18:20somewhere, couldn't it?
18:20The priority for us
18:27is not letting them
18:29get to the vehicle
18:30to burn it out,
18:34destroy the evidence
18:35before we get to it
18:36and we can get
18:37our forensic teams onto it.
18:41With the two brothers
18:43now in custody,
18:44the clock is ticking
18:46to prove who was driving.
18:47Investigators Scott and Joe
18:51need to gather enough evidence
18:53for a charge
18:53before the suspects
18:55are released.
18:59We've got the two lads
19:01but we've not got the car
19:02and we've really got
19:03that 24 hours
19:05whilst they are in custody
19:07with us
19:07to try and locate
19:08that vehicle.
19:10The first priority
19:11of continually tracking
19:12of that vehicle
19:13is to hopefully
19:14find it nearby
19:14so this is to be
19:17a leader
19:17where it's parked up now
19:18and then we can get
19:18that vehicle recovered
19:19and look at
19:21examinations
19:22of that vehicle
19:22both mechanically
19:24and forensically
19:25for inside
19:25which will be able
19:26to place the driver
19:28and the suspect
19:29in that vehicle.
19:30It's a real racing time
19:32to try and get
19:33to the vehicle
19:34before the two suspects
19:36get back to it themselves.
19:3724 hours after the arrest
19:51of the two brothers
19:52Scott receives an update
19:54from South Yorkshire.
19:55they've just been interviewed
19:57and they're going to get bailed
20:00shortly.
20:00I knew you'd say that.
20:02Damn it.
20:02I know mate, I know.
20:04With no trace
20:04of the VW Golf
20:06officers are forced
20:07to let the men go.
20:09Our task is ultimately
20:10to try and find that car
20:12trying to get the word out
20:14because as of when
20:15they come out of custody
20:16they're...
20:18I think their main goal
20:20would be to destroy that car.
20:21It's so frustrating
20:22they're going to get bailed
20:23but evidentially
20:25what have we got?
20:27It's always frustrating
20:28when you know
20:29you're so close to something
20:30but you're not close enough.
20:32We only have a finite amount of time
20:34we can deal with someone
20:35in custody.
20:36So it was a decision
20:36to release them
20:38with strict bail conditions
20:39to keep an eye on them
20:40so we know where they are.
20:43With the brothers out on bail
20:45the race is now on
20:47to find the missing golf.
20:51Crash investigator Joe Binley
21:10is leading a case
21:12of a hit-and-run collision
21:13that killed an 81-year-old cyclist.
21:17Graham Slinn
21:18who was killed
21:19in this devastating collision
21:21was a man
21:22who was just about
21:23to celebrate
21:23his wedding anniversary
21:24with his wife.
21:26He had a son
21:26a daughter
21:27and grandchildren
21:28and although retired
21:30was fit
21:31as we know
21:32a cyclist
21:33still had so many more years
21:34left to live
21:35and it's the family members
21:36who now have got to come to terms
21:38with the loss of Graham
21:38in such devastating circumstances.
21:41I met Graham
21:4564 years ago
21:47when I was only 15
21:49and we were cycling
21:51all the time
21:51because he was in
21:52Sheffield Racing Club
21:54and I was in
21:55the bait and wheelers.
21:56When I saw him
21:57I knew that's what I wanted.
22:02We got married in 1965
22:04and we've been together
22:05ever since
22:05so something must have
22:07worked in our favour.
22:08He was very friendly
22:10I mean
22:11he could go anywhere
22:12and find somebody
22:14to talk to.
22:15He was a very outgoing
22:16chattery box.
22:18Changed my life
22:24totally.
22:26It's just such a shock.
22:28Just
22:28yeah
22:29just not expected at all
22:31we're expecting to have
22:32another few years together
22:33doing things
22:35making more memories
22:36but
22:37we're gone.
22:42The most challenging part
22:44of the job
22:44is that we're dealing
22:46with someone's lives
22:47being cut short
22:48and lost
22:49unexpectedly
22:50no build up to it
22:51someone going about
22:52their normal daily business
22:54doing nothing wrong at all
22:55and someone else's actions
22:57has caused their death.
22:59I don't know what I felt
23:00I just could have screamed really
23:02I felt so
23:04helpless
23:05you think
23:06that shouldn't have happened
23:07it should not have happened
23:09yeah
23:10I never want that
23:11for tonight again
23:12no it's horrible
23:13thinking about it
23:19it's absolutely awful
23:22so where are we up to
23:31with the footage then?
23:33Four days after the collision
23:34there's still no sign
23:36of the suspect's car
23:37but there is a breakthrough
23:38we've done a lot
23:40of extensive tracking
23:41and we now know
23:41it goes in towards
23:42the Kilomarsh area
23:43Joe's collected
23:45a large amount
23:46of CCTV
23:47and dashcam footage
23:48showing the movements
23:49of the gulf
23:50before and after
23:51the collision
23:52so we've got
23:53the full timeline
23:54now then?
23:54yeah so
23:55we've got a timeline
23:56starting from 10am
23:58on the morning
23:59of the collision
24:00the 4th of April
24:00the footage
24:02is vital evidence
24:03to prove
24:04which of the brothers
24:05was driving
24:06it's one thing
24:07getting the vehicle
24:08but it's trying
24:08to put that driver
24:09in the driver's seat
24:10so we know
24:12that Kane leaves
24:13his address
24:13via his tag
24:14about 10 o'clock
24:16there's then some
24:16movement
24:17with the gulf
24:18in the morning
24:20of the 4th
24:21through to
24:23the early afternoon
24:24before the collision
24:25where
24:25they ended up
24:27in Rover Valley
24:27Country Park
24:28and we can see
24:30into the vehicle
24:30very slightly
24:32through the sunroof
24:33of the vehicle
24:34Joe's identified
24:3720 year old
24:38Kane Byrne
24:39the younger
24:40of the two brothers
24:41as the driver
24:42it all goes
24:44to show that
24:44it's Kane
24:45being the driver
24:46rather than
24:47his brother
24:48even though
24:48we know
24:48he's within
24:49the vehicle
24:49and we can see
24:51that they're still
24:52using the
24:52cloned plates
24:54on it
24:54so they've been
24:55on this vehicle
24:55all day
24:56and then they've
24:57left Rover Valley
24:58back in towards
24:59Kilimarsh
24:59it then ends up
25:00back towards
25:01the A57
25:01where we start
25:03picking the dash cam
25:04up of the vehicle
25:05heading towards
25:06the collision site
25:07we've then got
25:08the footage
25:08where the collisions
25:09now happened
25:10and they've
25:11continued
25:12dash cam
25:19from another car
25:20and more CCTV
25:21clearly show
25:23the blue gulf
25:24speeding away
25:24from the pedestrian
25:25crossing
25:26with smoke
25:27coming from it
25:27followed by
25:32the aftermath
25:32we've then got
25:39the footage
25:39where we've
25:39already looked at
25:40the number plate
25:41coming off
25:41yeah absolutely
25:42but I know
25:43it turns
25:44right
25:44and goes
25:45towards the
25:46hearthill area
25:46and we can
25:47clearly see
25:48now at this point
25:48that the front
25:49number plate's
25:49missing
25:49we can also
25:50see the damage
25:51to the front
25:51of the car
25:52and we can
25:53also see
25:53the driver
25:54holding
25:55in his hand
25:56a yellow balloon
25:58balloons are
25:59often used
26:00to inhale
26:01nitrous oxide
26:01or laughing gas
26:03it's illegal
26:04for recreational
26:05use
26:06it wasn't
26:06just a one-off
26:07thing
26:07this was a
26:08continued
26:09use of balloons
26:10and nitrous oxide
26:11throughout the
26:12course of the day
26:12which CCTV is proven
26:13which can only
26:15make your driving
26:15worse
26:16and then
26:19travels along
26:20Eckington Way
26:20towards the
26:21Waterthorpe area
26:22then enters
26:24into Waterthorpe
26:25on Harwood Drive
26:27and this is all
26:28post-collision
26:28yeah so this is
26:29the last bit of
26:30footage we're up to
26:31is about 28 minutes
26:32post-collision
26:33and we were still
26:35working on where
26:36that vehicle then
26:36goes from that
26:37point
26:37we'll carry on
26:38with the CCTV
26:39tracking
26:39and start doing
26:42street by street
26:42searches
26:43to see if we can
26:43locate the vehicle
26:44CCTV evidence
26:47linking the
26:48brothers to the
26:49blue golf
26:49is stacking up
26:50but police
26:51still need
26:52to find the car
26:53at the roundabout
27:09in a minute
27:10first exit
27:11it's this way
27:12it's day six
27:14of the case
27:15and the brothers
27:16are still out
27:17on bail
27:17if we've got
27:20any traffic
27:21able to assist
27:22the vehicle's
27:23been abandoned
27:24Derbyshire police
27:26has received a call
27:27from a member
27:27of the public
27:28about the whereabouts
27:29of the blue golf
27:30we were on nights
27:33when we assisted
27:33our colleagues
27:34from South Yorkshire
27:35police
27:36locking up some
27:37offenders
27:37for a fatal incident
27:38outstanding
27:39was a Golf R
27:41police hope
27:43the car
27:44will provide
27:44crucial DNA
27:45evidence
27:46linking it
27:46to the brothers
27:47ideally
27:50there's still
27:51evidence
27:52that we can
27:52get from the
27:53vehicle
27:53so it's key
27:54getting an early
27:54since a crime
27:55officer up there
27:56Joe
27:59is en route
28:00to the vehicle
28:00from Sheffield
28:01along with
28:02a forensic
28:02investigator
28:03it's key
28:05to us
28:06to be able
28:06to put
28:07that vehicle
28:07at the scene
28:08CCTV's brilliant
28:09and shows
28:11what we need
28:11it to show
28:12we know
28:13the registration
28:13of that vehicle
28:14and it's crucial
28:16that if it is
28:16that vehicle
28:17that we need
28:17to get there
28:18as soon as
28:18possible
28:18to secure it
28:19and to get
28:20as much evidence
28:20we can from it
28:21I imagine
28:23it's down there
28:24because there's
28:24police tape
28:24it would have
28:44been a very
28:44nice car
28:45as you can
28:47see
28:47it's got
28:48extensive
28:48damage to it
28:49it's going to be
28:50quite difficult
28:51to get any
28:51forensics
28:52because it's
28:53melted
28:53and been
28:54destroyed
28:54from obviously
28:55the fire
28:55and the water
28:56that fire
28:56service use
28:57despite the car
29:00being destroyed
29:01your cap
29:02looks like
29:02it's out
29:03does it
29:03a forensic
29:06officer arrives
29:07to photograph
29:07and collect
29:08evidence
29:09you'd have
29:19thought
29:19if that was
29:20the origin
29:21of the fire
29:21then that rubber
29:23would have
29:23gone
29:23but the back
29:25doesn't look
29:26as damaged
29:27does it
29:27compared to
29:27the front
29:28Joe and
29:31Scott
29:31are now
29:32at the scene
29:32yeah
29:33any
29:36jewelry
29:36yeah
29:37he's got
29:38a
29:38I can't
29:40which one
29:40it's got
29:40a massive
29:41thick
29:41gold chain
29:42looks like
29:42a dog chain
29:43yeah
29:43like down to
29:44his
29:44right
29:46okay
29:47and they've
29:48both got
29:48like diamond
29:49in it
29:50yeah
29:51thank you
29:53it may seem
29:55disappointing
29:56that the vehicle
29:56has been
29:57burnt out
29:57and yes
29:58we have lost
29:58some of our
29:59internal forensic
29:59work
30:00however
30:00the dints
30:01to the
30:02front passenger
30:03door
30:03the wing
30:04and the bonnet
30:05and on the roof
30:07are all very much
30:08consistent with that
30:09damage that we've seen
30:10throughout on the CCTV
30:11so although we might
30:13have lost forensic
30:14evidence in terms of
30:15DNA and fibre
30:16and that type of
30:17evidence
30:18we can still say
30:19with a lot of
30:20confidence that that
30:21vehicle is the
30:23vehicle involved
30:24in that collision
30:25that'd be interesting
30:28do you reckon
30:28you get any
30:29DNA anything
30:29off of this
30:30the officers
30:31spot a towing
30:32strap attached
30:33to a tree
30:34and the car
30:35because they've
30:36clearly put that
30:36on haven't they
30:37to stop the car
30:38rolling down
30:38with it being a
30:40rope
30:40there's been
30:41friction on it
30:42when they've been
30:42pulling it
30:43and that can
30:43also result in
30:44cellular DNA
30:45being transferred
30:46onto the exhibit
30:47and hopefully
30:48we'll be able
30:48to get something
30:49from that
30:49because we've
30:51now got sort
30:51of two crimes
30:52someone's brought
30:53that vehicle
30:53here and someone's
30:54set fire to that
30:54vehicle so I hope
30:56that we'll be able
30:57to get something
30:57from that strap
30:58to be able to say
30:59who's moved
31:00that vehicle
31:00while the forensics
31:04officer continues
31:05to look for
31:06evidence
31:06even though it's
31:09learnt out
31:09you're still getting
31:09a bit off it
31:10then
31:10Joe and Scott
31:12spot something
31:13else
31:14do you think
31:17it could have
31:17been dropped
31:17off on a low
31:18load
31:18it may point
31:20to a bigger
31:20conspiracy
31:21to cover
31:22the suspect's
31:23tracks
31:23that's perfectly
31:25positioned
31:26with the recovery
31:27truck
31:27yeah
31:27you can see
31:28you can see
31:28you can see
31:28do you know
31:29when the bed
31:30of the roller
31:31goes down
31:31it does that
31:33doesn't it
31:34it scratches
31:36there
31:36it's not
31:37possible
31:38that that
31:38vehicle's been
31:39there
31:39since the
31:40time of
31:40the offence
31:41so it's
31:42clearly taken
31:42on a low
31:43loader
31:43and dumped
31:44at that
31:45location
31:45where it's
31:45been burnt
31:46out
31:46that's
31:47fresh
31:48no
31:48that's
31:48fresh
31:49of course
31:49you can see
31:49where it
31:49mud is
31:50there's some
31:50scrape markings
31:51on the road
31:51which could be
31:52consistent with
31:53a bed of a
31:53truck going
31:54onto the road
31:55so again
31:55I'm going to be
31:56asking for
31:56any sort of
31:58paint transfer
31:58any marks
31:59anything like
31:59that which
32:00might have
32:00been used
32:01just so we
32:02can try and
32:02identify what's
32:03been used to
32:03move that
32:03vehicle to
32:04where it
32:04is now
32:04police
32:07police think
32:08that after
32:08their release
32:09it was
32:10arranged for
32:10the gulf
32:11to be
32:11taken to
32:12its current
32:12location
32:13and torched
32:14there's been
32:15some real
32:16thought as
32:17to how
32:18to dispose
32:18of essential
32:19evidence
32:19into a fatal
32:21road traffic
32:21collision
32:22where the
32:22vehicle is
32:23at the
32:23minute
32:23I would
32:24have
32:24suspected
32:25if it
32:25had been
32:25there
32:25since
32:26saturday
32:26people would
32:27have
32:27called us
32:27it's on
32:28a footpath
32:29it certainly
32:30looks out of
32:30place
32:31so for my
32:32eyes that
32:32has been
32:32moved
32:33this morning
32:33and being
32:34sat on
32:35fire
32:35immediately
32:35for me
32:37it's
32:38what they're
32:39going to
32:39do next
32:39they're not
32:42going to
32:42stop to
32:42put in
32:43prison
32:43these
32:43two
32:43idiots
32:44hopefully
32:49there's
32:49forensics
32:50opportunities
32:50on the
32:51car
32:51they've
32:53got
32:53a lot
32:54more
32:54CCTV
32:55just
32:56all
32:56little
32:57pieces
32:58of the
32:58jigsaw
32:58that are
32:59coming
32:59together
33:00nicely
33:00to
33:00closing
33:01out
33:01on
33:01these
33:01two
33:02individuals
33:02the
33:04important
33:04thing
33:05for
33:05us
33:05to
33:05focus
33:05on
33:06is
33:06that
33:07there's
33:07a
33:07victim
33:08family
33:09that
33:10all
33:10need
33:10justice
33:11for
33:11what
33:11is
33:12a
33:12horrendous
33:12fail
33:13to
33:13stop
33:13incident
33:13justice
33:15is
33:16if
33:16someone
33:16is
33:16at
33:17fault
33:17them
33:17going
33:18to

33:20the
33:20full
33:20extent
33:20of
33:21the
33:21law
33:21and
33:22being
33:22able
33:22to
33:22provide
33:22that
33:23closure
33:23to
33:23the
33:23family
33:24that
33:24someone
33:25was
33:25at
33:25fault
33:26for
33:26this
33:26collision
33:26and
33:27they
33:27have
33:27been
33:27dealt
33:27with
33:28when
33:32this
33:33all
33:33happened

33:38what
33:38he
33:38should

37:54describes that golf travelling at speed, approaching a crossing.
37:59It did not slow. It didn't falter.
38:03They then see a male and a bike are being launched into the air.
38:09The golf hits this male and sends this male at least 15 feet into the air.
38:17Are you aware of that?
38:18No comment.
38:19Are you the male responsible for that?
38:21No comment.
38:24The CCTV footage shows the cyclist lying on the ground just seconds after the collision
38:29and the blue golf speeding away.
38:37The car then arrives 10 miles away at the address linked to the brothers.
38:44You can see here the VW has now pulled onto the driveway.
38:50Do you recognize any of these people?
38:52No comment.
38:53Are you one of those people on that CCTV?
38:56No comment.
38:57Is this male here in this blue tracksuit kind of inspecting some damage to the roof?
39:02Is that you?
39:05No comment.
39:08The damage is from the collision with the cyclist.
39:12Covering this car up, is that something that would normally be done or is this only being done because of what has just happened?
39:23No comment.
39:24Police suspect that soon after covering the car up, it was taken away and hidden.
39:30Have you got anything you want to say about those clips of footage that you've now seen?
39:34No comment.
39:37Further CCTV reveals more evidence.
39:39It shows the plates being changed the morning before the hit and run.
39:44And other footage appears to show the driver inhaling laughing gas from a balloon immediately before and after the collision.
39:59You can clearly see that the males that you're present with are inhaling balloons.
40:10Police suspect Cain was inhaling laughing gas, a powerful drug.
40:15Do nitrous oxide balloons, do they have any impact on you?
40:20No comment.
40:21Is it appropriate to use them whilst driving a vehicle?
40:25No comment.
40:27Having not passed a driving test, would you consider yourself capable to drive a car?
40:33No comment.
40:34Have you received any training at all to drive a car?
40:38No comment.
40:39The victim's family pay a tribute.
40:42They describe Graham as a husband, a dad, and a granddad.
40:49And his family describe him as a gentle, funny, and kind to his core.
40:59How does it make you feel hearing that about Graham?
41:03No comment.
41:07Are you the person that has killed Graham Slyne?
41:10No comment.
41:12Eight days after killing 81-year-old Graham Slyne, Cain Byrne is charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
41:36It's the selfishness I can't get over.
41:41The only thing that is important to them is not being caught.
41:49They've seemingly got no care or responsibility for anybody else that they hurt.
41:54There's always a feeling of what else could we have done with investigations.
42:00But I always operate on the, would I be happy if that was a family member of mine who had been killed?
42:05Would I be happy with how the investigation was run?
42:08Would I be satisfied that all the lines of inquiry has been completed?
42:11And that's how I run my investigations.
42:13At court, Cain Byrne pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and with no insurance.
42:30The passenger faced no charges in relation to this incident.
42:39One of the most important investigations we'll ever look into is how someone's died.
42:43They're not just the thing, that's someone's loved one.
42:45It's my investigation, I'll always deal with it at the best of my abilities, but I will never feel the same way that the family feels about the loss of Graham.
42:56Graham Slynn's family was in court to see Cain Byrne sentenced to prison.
43:00He's got a sentence of 16 and a half years with 11 and a half years behind bars, and he won't be able to even apply for parole for at least seven years.
43:15It seems harsh, because he's only 21, but he's been given chance after chance after chance.
43:26At some point, you have to face the consequences, and now that time is now.
43:36When I go to church, I light a candle for Graham, and at the same time I pray for him.
43:42And I know some people probably won't understand, but I pray for that young chap as well, because he is only a young chap.
43:53And I pray for his children, because he's got two children.
43:56What sort of life have they got with his dad in prison?
44:00You can only hope that he will change his behaviour.
44:06And come to realise that what he has done is wrong, and he didn't need to do that.
44:12Gone in a puff of wind.
