00:01Welcome to Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
00:04The ultimate renovation showdown.
00:06Whose idea was this?
00:08Come on, mine.
00:09Take him here, Marie.
00:11Over four thrilling weeks, creativity meets competition.
00:14Looks wicked, doesn't it?
00:16Perfect fit, oh my gosh.
00:18As determined duos battle it out to prove.
00:21I'm having an absolute nightmare.
00:23They've got the vision, skill and grit to win the ultimate prize.
00:26I haven't got a clue.
00:28I can cry, I can literally cry.
00:30The keys to this breathtaking French property.
00:34Set on the outskirts of a Normandy nature park,
00:38the property boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms,
00:42two salons, five additional rooms to renovate,
00:46perfectly pruned gardens, stunning outbuildings,
00:49its very own orchard and even a historic bread oven.
00:53It's a lot to play for and if we lose, I'll be fuming.
00:57Three heats and a grand finale where only the best will rise.
01:03All the pairs have to do is show they have the renovation know-how
01:07to impress me and various guest judges from Chateau DIY.
01:10I think this is really creative.
01:13What a transformation.
01:15In weekly challenges designed to push their creativity and skills to the limit.
01:19The clock is ticking.
01:21Win the week and they secure their spot in the grand finale.
01:24The dream is real, the stakes are high.
01:27This is Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
01:31Welcome to heat one.
01:41Let's meet this week's pairs competing for place in the grand finale.
01:45Oh my God.
01:46It's so beautiful.
01:48Isn't it amazing?
01:49Yeah.
01:50It's beyond our wildest dreams really because you just never think an opportunity like this
01:54is going to present itself.
01:55Wow.
01:56Look at that balcony.
01:57How nice.
01:58It's been such a build up to get here and now we see it and there's all these ideas flying
02:03around.
02:04Wow.
02:05Look at this.
02:06How nice.
02:07We are feeling a bit excited, a bit of nervous mixed bag of both.
02:14Looks so beautiful.
02:16The property is amazing.
02:18It's really lovely.
02:20This is how we imagined our dream home going to be.
02:24Oh wow.
02:25Look at the little Juliet balcony.
02:28We are very excited.
02:29But also I think a bit of apprehension is always good.
02:32You know, focuses the mind, sharpens the chisel.
02:36Yeah.
02:37Oh.
02:38Isn't it gorgeous?
02:39Wow.
02:40Wow.
02:41Yeah.
02:42Absolutely stunning.
02:43We are like quietly competitive aren't we?
02:46Yeah.
02:47Yeah.
02:48I don't like to lose.
02:49So to have this opportunity in front of us is incredible.
02:56Hello and welcome to Win The Dream where you'll be competing to win this beautiful property
03:02behind me.
03:03You'll look very excited which I'm pleased to see.
03:05But unfortunately it's not going to be that easy.
03:07You've got to prove to me and various judges that you've got the ability and the skill
03:12to manage and maintain a period property like this.
03:15You now look slightly petrified.
03:17It's going to be great fun.
03:20For your first challenge.
03:21I'd like you to create a room that's a social hub for the property where guests can gather
03:27and in addition create an event space where you can earn money.
03:31Oh.
03:32Okay.
03:33Your entertainment space must include a custom built bar.
03:37Ooh.
03:38Nice.
03:39Yeah.
03:40I'm looking for concept and creativity, techniques and functionality.
03:44And I really want you to play to your strengths.
03:47If you've got a skill set, I want to see it in your designs.
03:50Yeah.
03:51Now to make things slightly more interesting, I'm going to put you into two teams of four.
03:56Ooh.
03:57Ooh.
03:58Indeed.
04:00So Sam and Elizabeth, I'm going to put you with Edward and Nell.
04:02Ooh.
04:03Nice.
04:04Nice.
04:05You're welcome Fernando.
04:06You'll be with Xavier and Tasha.
04:08Happy with that?
04:09Yes.
04:10Now are you ready for your first challenge?
04:11Yes.
04:12You sure?
04:13Yes.
04:14So for this challenge, we're giving each team a thousand euros to complete their renovation.
04:19Your briefs and tools are waiting in your rooms.
04:22Your time starts now.
04:24Chateaus can be costly to run, which is why many are businesses to bring in an income.
04:29Ooh.
04:30Wow.
04:31This is nice, isn't it?
04:32Oh, it's quite big.
04:33It is quite big.
04:34So our pairs have been put into teams to renovate these disused garages, and have been given
04:40just six days to do so.
04:42Oh, okay.
04:43This is cool.
04:44This is good.
04:45In Burgundy, a young parent, Zav, an advertising manager, and Tash, who works in e-commerce.
04:52So we have a little girl, she's two and a half, and a little seven month old baby boy.
04:57So obviously it's not easy to leave them, and it was really hard for us to kind of make
05:01a decision to just come and do this.
05:02But it's for them as well.
05:03Yeah.
05:04It's for all of us.
05:05Yeah.
05:06Teamed up with them in mint are husbands, Fernando, who works as cabin crew, and Saurab, a software
05:11engineer, who dream of living in France.
05:14The experience of moving here in France, I think it's something we've been basically
05:18dreaming of for a long time.
05:20And maybe it's the time now that it will come through.
05:25The couple met 13 years ago, and now run a successful upcycling business.
05:29Cheers.
05:31But their dream would be to open a workshop warehouse while renovating the chateau.
05:37That's eventually our dream, that we're going to do a holiday retreat.
05:40So people can come and see that the house was done with the DIY skills.
05:4481.5?
05:45Yeah.
05:46And they can actually learn the skills.
05:48They can learn how to do furniture upcycling.
05:50So once we move into the property, that's what we have plans for the future.
05:55I just think it's nice to have the zones.
05:57Yes.
05:58Tash is kicking things off with ideas about the room's layout.
06:02I think we have this really nice wall at the back, so we obviously want to make a
06:05bit of a feature of that.
06:06It seems to me like this is like more of a natural seating area.
06:09Coffee table over there.
06:11Yeah, it could be a coffee table and like a settee or...
06:14A nice little nook to like read and chill in.
06:18That corner we could do a little bit of gaming area.
06:21I think having some games is a really good idea.
06:24Maybe we can reuse this for the bar area.
06:26Should we check if it works?
06:27Have a go?
06:28Yeah.
06:29It does.
06:30Cupboards underneath it, a new splash back.
06:33Yeah.
06:34We just need to think about how we're going to build the bar.
06:36We can find an old pallet.
06:38Yeah.
06:39Break them in.
06:40Make a bar out of it.
06:41That's a really good idea.
06:42Then we would need to build the bar out to allow room.
06:46And then you can come round here.
06:48You're at the bar.
06:49Serving the drinks.
06:50Here's your...
06:51Yeah.
06:52Right, guys.
06:53It seems like we have a plan.
06:54Should we just crack on?
06:55Yes.
06:56Let's go.
06:57Let's go.
06:58I love this wall.
06:59Nice solid beams as well up here.
07:04Next door teamed up for their first challenge are the yellows Sam, a safety officer and Elizabeth,
07:09a jeweller.
07:10This couple have been married for 18 years.
07:13We work really well together as a team.
07:15We communicate well, don't we?
07:17We often seem to know what each other's thinking.
07:20And I think that's partly because we've been married for so long.
07:23In fact, words are sometimes not needed.
07:25It's just a look.
07:26Yeah.
07:27Or a noise.
07:28A little whistle you do sometimes.
07:29Yeah, yeah.
07:30And we understand each other.
07:31Yeah.
07:32Nice bit of metal here.
07:33Oh, yeah.
07:34With Ed a chef and Nell a waitress.
07:37And the doors open out.
07:39We should definitely make a feature of that.
07:41This Navy duo from Surrey have been married for four years.
07:44Oh, is it like a bag each?
07:45Let's have a look.
07:46We want to live a bit of a more simple life, work on the land, eat the food that we make
07:54and raise our daughter in a kind of more chilled environment in some sunshine.
07:59I think it would change our lives.
08:01The pair first met while working in the hospitality industry.
08:04A couple of tape measures and some chisels I've got in here.
08:06And are hoping the skills learned from their day job will pay off for this challenge.
08:11I'm feeling quite happy about the challenge.
08:13I had a tenancy on a pub a few years ago, so I've renovated a bar.
08:18And I have worked behind a bar for a number of years, so I think I know what you need on one.
08:23Yeah.
08:24But what theme are we going to go for?
08:25Are we going to go kind of English pub vibes?
08:27Are we going to go kind of French?
08:30We're in a chateau in France.
08:31I think we need to go French.
08:33Yeah, absolutely.
08:34French rustic.
08:35Kind of French rustic, yeah.
08:36Yeah, rustic's quite nice, cos that leans to the walls.
08:38Do you notice the ornate panelling here?
08:40Yeah.
08:41Could we continue that along on this bare wall?
08:43Oh, that's cool, yeah.
08:44That is prime to be panelled up.
08:45It is really nice.
08:46Would we do the three squares?
08:48Yes.
08:49So, shall I just draw this on the wall?
08:51Do it.
08:52Rough.
08:53Yeah, go on.
08:54And then, oh, my God, I should have used a ruler.
08:59Elizabeth has an idea about how they can hit the brief by bringing in some money with their space.
09:05What do you think about, like, an honesty bar?
09:07I think that's a good sensible idea.
09:08I think that's a really good idea.
09:09I think that's a really good idea.
09:10If we have the both options, though.
09:12Yeah.
09:13How it is normally in the day is like an honesty bar that then moves into a room that you can have cheese and wine.
09:19You're doubling up, then.
09:20Got the option.
09:21Yeah, absolutely.
09:22Multi-purpose.
09:23Is there a way of being really clever with it?
09:25Could the bottom of the bar pull out and the top of the bar stay fixed to the wall?
09:31Yeah.
09:32And then you'd be able to get behind it.
09:33Yeah.
09:34You know, serving away and whatnot.
09:35If we could work something out like that.
09:36Yeah.
09:37So, like, what are they called?
09:38The cupboard at the bottom and you put your grandma's plates on.
09:42Well-stressers.
09:43Well-stressers.
09:44So, you can have the bar on this side here where you've already got a bit of an alcove, a bit of a space.
09:49Keeping the whole of that space there.
09:51So, would you put the well-stressers right up against there?
09:54I think maybe it would start where the lighting is, pin the well-stressers to the wall, and then the bottom of it's on wheels and comes out.
10:02And then when it's not in use, it just looks completely normal.
10:05I like that idea.
10:06I think, really, the next step is seeing what furniture we can find then.
10:09Agreed.
10:10Because that starts it off, doesn't it, for us?
10:12Yeah.
10:13Sounds really good.
10:14Let's do it.
10:15To the Bracant.
10:16To the Bracant.
10:19Beyond the formal gardens and next to the Chateau's orchard are two outbuildings that are included in the phenomenal prize.
10:26I have converted one of these outbuildings into a workshop for the contestants, stocked with all the tools and basic supplies they'll need for the competition.
10:35Ed, on the Navy and Yellow Team, is on the power tools.
10:43So, we're just going to cover this door in because we're going to put the bar across here.
10:48So, just building this little frame out here, I'm going to cover it with OSB, and then whatever I'm told to clad it in or paint it with will be how it's finished.
10:58The Burgundy and Mint team have both hit the road to go shopping.
11:05Fernando and Serab are off to source some pallets for their bar.
11:10OK, let's go.
11:12While Xavier and Tash are looking to find some hidden gems at the local Bracant, Sam and Ed are making a start on the panelling.
11:21So far, so good. It's looking alright.
11:29Now this looks productive.
11:32We've finally got on the tools, have we?
11:33Yeah.
11:34Yeah, finally.
11:35I look forward to this bit.
11:36What are you making?
11:37Panelling to go on that wall.
11:39Nice.
11:40What's this material you're using? Solid pine?
11:42Yeah, we just think that gives the depth that we need and just a bit more eco-friendly.
11:47Yeah, it's a nice sustainable material as opposed to MDF, which is not great for the planet.
11:51It's very on trend at the moment panelling, isn't it?
11:53It is, yeah.
11:54You're seeing a lot of interior design mags and stuff.
11:56Yeah.
11:57Do you think it's appropriate for a French chateau garage?
11:59I hope it is, to be honest.
12:01I think the fact that we're trying to echo what's there already is the rationale behind putting it there, you know.
12:06And we want the relaxed, entertaining, a room vibe as well. I think that'll bring it.
12:11Is this something you've done at home?
12:12I've done a very limited amount of panelling on the window seats.
12:16Very limited panelling.
12:17I'm just getting used to some of the equipment, to be honest.
12:20So this is going to test me a bit.
12:21We are back in North West France, where two teams are battling it out to convert two garages of this huge chateau into entertaining spaces,
12:37which must be complete with a functioning custom-made bar.
12:43While the navy and yellow team have started on their wall panelling, the burgundy and mint team have headed out shopping.
12:50Yay!
12:51Result.
12:52Xavier and Tash have already purchased supplies.
12:55We are in the middle of our...
12:57At a recycling centre, apparently.
12:59A recycling centre.
13:00We can sand these down, repaint them, and now we can go and see what else we can find.
13:04Yeah.
13:05But it's not going to plan for Fernando and Surab.
13:09No.
13:10Doesn't work.
13:11The guy said he was going to be here, but he's nowhere to be seen.
13:14What do you do?
13:15Yeah.
13:16So, did you try to write him?
13:17I wrote.
13:18I said we are here.
13:19But no reply yet.
13:20They've sourced some pallets for the bar, but the cellar has gone missing.
13:25I want to keep an eye on your phone.
13:28Yeah, I'm keeping an eye on your phone.
13:29Is there a possibility to call him?
13:31No.
13:32Do you want to knock next door?
13:34Or maybe that house?
13:35Next door, this one.
13:36There's a bit of frustration because we said, can you come now?
13:39He said, c'est bon.
13:40We understood this.
13:41Yes, you can come.
13:42And now we are here.
13:44Looks like he's saying, only come at 3.30.
13:48We can't afford to waste time like this.
13:51So, I'm just going to message, see if he can take the pallets,
13:54and then we can come back and pay or pay online.
13:57Oh, we just translate.
13:58It says, the boss is not in the side.
14:00Translate into French.
14:02Last message to him, and then we're going to have to move on.
14:05If the pair can't take the pallets,
14:07they'll have to have a total rethink on their bar design.
14:11We can't waste time.
14:12Wait, and then we'll see.
14:13Meanwhile, Nell and Elizabeth of the Navy and Yellow Team
14:18have arrived at the local Bricant.
14:20Let's see what we can find.
14:21Absolutely.
14:22I'm excited.
14:23Yeah, me too.
14:24I think it should be good, you know.
14:26Yeah, I'm excited.
14:28Yeah.
14:29But we're so...
14:31Cheers.
14:33Top of their list is a Welsh dresser
14:35that they want to repurpose into a bar.
14:3840 euros.
14:39I don't love it.
14:40Ooh!
14:41Oh, my goodness, look!
14:4320.
14:44But the room's not big enough, unfortunately.
14:46I know, how sad.
14:47How sad.
14:48Put that on.
14:49I think, do you know what?
14:51It really could work.
14:53If we stuck this like a cupboard to the wall,
14:56Sam tile the top and the back,
14:59I think it's a strong contender.
15:01Yeah.
15:02I think it's really nice.
15:03I think it is, yeah.
15:04OK.
15:05Should we go and sort of buying the glasses and games and things?
15:07Let's do it.
15:08Ah!
15:09Perfect!
15:10You wanted bashed up?
15:11I do!
15:12I want a battered table.
15:13You should get that.
15:14Yeah, get that.
15:15Texas Hold'em.
15:16I really like this.
15:18Can we just get this?
15:19Let's just get it.
15:20I like that.
15:21I've found a curtain pole for our stairs.
15:25They'd look really nice, Nell, on the bar.
15:28Loads of ice in them with bottles of beer.
15:30I think you're right.
15:31Elizabeth and Nell seem to have bagged quite a few bargains.
15:3525.
15:36Oh!
15:37OK.
15:38Merci beaucoup.
15:39Merci beaucoup.
15:40Merci, monsieur.
15:41Au revoir.
15:42Merci.
15:43Now for the show-stopping Welsh dresser.
15:46Tout ce que vous avez pris, 80 euros.
15:48Ah!
15:4980 euros.
15:50Brilliant.
15:51Merci beaucoup.
15:52Merci beaucoup, monsieur.
15:53I think the boys will be really happy.
15:55I do.
15:56We can adapt bits.
15:57We can work on them.
15:58Yeah, I think we've got a good amount of stuff.
16:00And for 105 euros, we're winners.
16:02Oh, my absolute bargain.
16:05Back over with Fernando and Saurabh.
16:08So, just waiting for the reply.
16:10And then we're going to have to take the decision.
16:12They have some good news about the pallets.
16:14Ooh!
16:15Yes!
16:16He just replied.
16:17We're going to get...
16:18No.
16:19We're going to ping it through the letterbox.
16:21Let's do that.
16:25So, should it start loading?
16:34Successful.
16:35Pallets secured.
16:36And their team mates seem to be doing well at the Bricant.
16:39Can't be where my cheap is.
16:40This is incredible.
16:42It won't be expensive, shall we?
16:45This would be really good for the chess table.
16:47This is the biggest mirror they have.
16:48I think it's a really cool statement piece for the space.
16:51It is very big.
16:52It would cover the back of the bar.
16:54And it's not the only thing Xavier has spotted.
16:57That looks long enough, too.
16:59I think that's super cool.
17:01It's so cool.
17:02Excuse me.
17:03These pieces of wood, are they for sale?
17:04I can't sell it to them.
17:05Oh, okay.
17:06Who can?
17:07That's my boss.
17:08Where's your boss?
17:09Xavier wants to purchase the Bricant display rack.
17:12Do you think we can just buy one of these?
17:14I would assume so.
17:16To repurpose the wood for their bar worktop.
17:19She might take a little bit of...
17:20Encouragement.
17:21..haggling and encouragement.
17:23I just spoke with Mary.
17:24Money down and said it's not for sale.
17:25That is so disappointing.
17:26That's, yeah.
17:27Depressing.
17:28Never mind.
17:29Oh, gosh.
17:30Oh, no.
17:31That was such a nice find.
17:33We'll have to just go back with what we have.
17:35Merci beaucoup.
17:36Oh, perfect.
17:37Perfect.
17:40Bye-bye.
17:41Au revoir, you too.
17:42The pair have spent €183 of their €1,000 budget.
17:51Back at the chateau, the shopping teams are returning with their purchases.
17:57One team are starting to see some real progress.
18:00Hello.
18:01Hi.
18:02We are back.
18:03Oh, my gosh.
18:04Oh, wow.
18:05Well done.
18:06Look at this.
18:07What do you think?
18:08Love it.
18:09Have a look.
18:10It's so nice.
18:11It's really good.
18:12It's perfect.
18:13Has it got the one factor in it, don't you think?
18:14Yeah.
18:15It looks great.
18:16Yeah, it's really lovely.
18:17And they can now get to work on their modular bar.
18:19It's great.
18:20It's fantastic.
18:21I really think we can make that work.
18:22With their first day done, there's now only five days left for our teams to transform
18:34these chateau garages into fully functional entertainment spaces.
18:38We've bought loads of great stuff, Nal and I.
18:40Getting some panelling onto the walls itself.
18:43Yeah.
18:44I think that was probably my highlight.
18:46The next highlight is obviously when the girls came back with all the things that you bought.
18:50Yeah.
18:51Oh, thank you.
18:52I can't believe how much you've got.
18:53I know.
18:54You've got a lot for me, innit?
18:55And the price as well.
18:56I know.
18:57And the panelling looks fantastic.
18:58Yeah.
18:59Well done.
19:00Oh, wow.
19:01Oh, it looks good.
19:02Sam and I have worked really well together.
19:03We've got, you know, we've really bonded.
19:04We almost had a manhug at one point.
19:05Oh, cute.
19:06Yeah, I know.
19:07Are you going to swap partners?
19:08No.
19:09Okay, cool.
19:10Just checking.
19:11Wait, wait, wait.
19:12Go slow, go slow, because I've got to go down the steps still.
19:13Today has been a bit challenging, I think.
19:15It's felt a bit slow.
19:17Yeah.
19:18We're also gutted not to get hold of that oak.
19:20Absolutely gutted by that oak.
19:21Top three bar.
19:22Oh!
19:23It's okay.
19:24Oh, my God.
19:27I'll get the star.
19:28So, today, I think we feel like we're not as fast as we would like to have been, but
19:34we're going to have a very productive day tomorrow, and then we'll be on track.
19:38Oh, wow.
19:39Wow.
19:40Isn't it amazing?
19:41Yes.
19:42There was a few things that obviously made us slower today.
19:44It was difficult because it was a bit disjointed, because Fernando and Sarab were out this morning,
19:49and then we were out this afternoon, and we haven't spent the day together as a team,
19:52so we've had very minimal time together with them.
19:54Yeah.
19:55Which has also been a bit, it's felt very disjointed.
19:57It's made the communication a bit more difficult, hasn't it?
20:00Yeah.
20:01Kind of been in different places at different times.
20:03We tried as hard as we could.
20:04We have been slowed down along the way, but we have obviously made the most of what we could.
20:09We've had a lot of fun.
20:10We've had a lot of fun.
20:11We've had a lot of fun.
20:12We've had a lot of fun.
20:13We've had a lot of fun.
20:14Both teams are now well underway into day two of their first challenge, transforming the
20:18Chateau garages into amazing entertainment spaces, complete with a functioning bar.
20:23Today, we are really ready to build the bar from pallets.
20:26As a team, we decided that it makes sense to keep as many people here today doing some
20:31actual DIY as possible, because time is not on our side.
20:34That's not laughter.
20:36We can hear through the wall.
20:37The other teams have done quite a lot of sawing and hammering and screwing,
20:40so we're not there yet.
20:41We've just laid our foundations and pushed on from here.
20:44This morning, I'm feeling good, actually.
20:46Nell and Elizabeth got a great find yesterday in this sideboard.
20:50Here you want.
20:51And it's my task today to try and upcycle that into a bar.
20:56Okay.
20:57I'm absolutely chomping at the bit to finish the panelling.
21:00I want that all up as soon as possible.
21:02Sam and Elizabeth are no strangers to DIY, having previously renovated three properties,
21:07and doing this on a Chateau scale has always been their dream.
21:11Moving to France has been in my heart for a very long time.
21:15I never thought we'd have the opportunity to perhaps live into something like this.
21:19You can tell the difference already, you know, when you look at that.
21:21I think if we won this property behind me here, I think that would just change everything.
21:25I could see myself not working full time in England anymore, moving over here.
21:30Yeah.
21:31And running a business together.
21:32Yeah.
21:33Before the team crack on with the bar and finish off the panelling, Elizabeth and Sam have had an idea for painting their room.
21:42We've had a bit of a think about the colour scheme.
21:45Yeah.
21:46Sage green.
21:47Like the French doors that we see.
21:48Yes.
21:49Yeah.
21:50But to contrast that green, going for like a burgundy colour.
21:53Notice in the local area, the street lighting and street furniture is painted burgundy.
21:58And then still stick with the cream for the floor.
22:01I like it.
22:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:03Cool.
22:04We should go and get paint.
22:05We can crack on.
22:06Yeah.
22:07Getting some bits done.
22:08Next door.
22:09How you doing darling?
22:10You alright?
22:11Yeah, I'm just trying to open this paint.
22:13It's not just colour that Tash is adding to their space.
22:16I'm just going to put some sand into the paint just to give it a little bit of texture.
22:20It will help to cover up any imperfections, any screws, anything like that.
22:23I actually just took this sand from the barn.
22:26What more could you want?
22:27Free sand.
22:28It looks good.
22:30Enough texture.
22:31It has loads of texture.
22:32It looks great.
22:33Down at the workshop, the mint team are finally making progress with the pallets for their bar.
22:42Hi, hello.
22:44Now you're talking my language.
22:47Pallets, I love these things.
22:49Dare I ask how much you paid for the pallets?
22:51Two euros each.
22:52Two euros?
22:53Yes.
22:54OK, that feels cheap.
22:55I thought I wanted to part a bit, but...
22:59You were going to negotiate on two euros.
23:01I'm looking for the deal.
23:02Yeah.
23:03Always looking for the deal.
23:04Yeah, you have to save the budget, no?
23:05So does that mean the budget is looking good?
23:07We're on budget.
23:08I think we spent around 170, 180 euros.
23:12I think we're doing OK.
23:13OK, what else have you bought?
23:14We bought some paints because we're going to...
23:17For this bar, we came up with an idea, the whole team,
23:20we're going to do a distressed look.
23:22We're going to try to take out as much as printers from the wood,
23:25and try to make it smooth, and then we're going to paint it.
23:28We all agreed.
23:29It's a good idea that in the back wall, it's more like a brick, rustic look.
23:33Now, the rustic look isn't an excuse for it being less time-intensive, right?
23:38We're trying to make it smooth.
23:42Because I fear there is a fine line between the rustic look and shabby chic,
23:47and oops, we run out of time and money.
23:49We're not going to cross that line, are we?
23:50No, no, no, no.
23:51So we're going to still paint it.
23:52Again, there's going to be sanding to blend in the paint together.
23:55Like, somewhere you'll see the wood, somewhere you'll see the colours.
23:58We don't want to hide the original beauty of the palette,
24:01but still we want to incorporate colours together.
24:04Celebrating these beautiful bits of nature.
24:06Yes.
24:07You've got a lot to do.
24:08You're slightly behind schedule.
24:09I look forward to seeing what you get up to by the end of the day.
24:12No problem.
24:13Thank you, Max.
24:14The Burgundy and Mint team have spent over €200 of their €1,000 budget.
24:20Meanwhile, Sam from the Yellow and Navy team has nearly finished the panelling.
24:25Looking good, looking good, yeah.
24:28Just as Nell and Elizabeth return with paint supplies,
24:30having spent €305 of their budget.
24:34And they're wasting no time getting it on the garage doors.
24:37It's exciting, this.
24:39I'd love to give it a little stir.
24:42Do you know?
24:43Yeah, yeah.
24:44That's the colour that I think is going to go well with it.
24:46Give it a little stir.
24:47Lovely shade of green, that.
24:48I really like it.
24:49Nice and light.
24:50Yeah, I know I like it.
24:51Yeah.
24:52I think that's beautiful, that.
24:53Let me just stand back and look at it.
24:55That's nice.
24:56Just thinking, if you're walking into this room, you're going to see that.
24:59It's lovely.
25:00It's going to jump out at you.
25:01Yeah.
25:02I think it's really good.
25:03OK, I'll crack on.
25:04As part of this week's challenge, the teams must include a bar in their entertainment space.
25:08The number you have called is not recognised.
25:11Mauritian-raised Xavier can speak French, so he's the best person to try and hunt down oak to complete their bar.
25:17So I'm just racking through the numbers for the nearest sawmills to us.
25:21You are pretty nearby.
25:22Let's try you.
25:23I'm now on about ten sawmills down with no luck.
25:26No one's even answered the phone yet.
25:28Because we fell in love with a piece of wood at a brocon that they wouldn't sell to us.
25:33And we just think it would be a really good feature point for the bar area and for the entire room.
25:39So he says there is a place literally opposite him and it just so happens that this place is actually like walkable distance down the road.
26:05like walkable distance out of the road.
26:27It was not easy to fumble through that conversation.
26:30If my friends were slightly more advanced,
26:32I could have pushed a bit harder.
26:34Yesterday sawmill,
26:36about 20 minutes from here,
26:38half-tempted to make an executive decision
26:40but I feel like I should probably inform
26:42Fernando and Sarab beforehand, really.
26:44While Xavier heads back to the chateau
26:46to regroup with his teammates,
26:48over in the workshop,
26:50Ed on the navy and yellow team
26:52is making good progress with their modular bar.
26:57Now this looks interesting.
26:59Hello, how are you doing?
27:00I'm good, how are you?
27:01I'm all right, yeah, I'm getting there.
27:03Now this isn't a technique you see every day.
27:05I'm really intrigued as to why you're using it.
27:07This is a really ancient technique.
27:11It's called the French cleat.
27:13And the reason I've chosen to do this
27:14is because I want to be able to fix to the back of the unit
27:17so you can't see any of the fixings from the front,
27:19but I still need to be able to hang it to the wall.
27:21So what I've created here is this profile here.
27:25So this bit will fix to the unit
27:27and then there will be the mirrored version of it
27:30which will be fixed to the wall.
27:32And the two just slot together like that.
27:36That is super satisfying, isn't it?
27:38Originally these old pieces of furniture
27:40had no fixings visible
27:41because they used to use these beautiful methods, didn't they?
27:43Yeah.
27:44So actually you're replicating that in the modern way.
27:46Absolutely.
27:47So we don't want to see these horrible screw heads.
27:50Being sensitive to the original building.
27:52I like it.
27:53Try, yeah.
27:54Right, I'll leave you to it.
27:55Thanks very much.
27:56All right, hello.
27:57Hi, Xavier, how are you?
27:59Bad news on the oak front.
28:01I went to the place that we were kind of recommended to go to.
28:03They said they didn't have anything like that.
28:05So, guys, let's drop the idea because it's becoming too complicated.
28:08Yeah, yeah.
28:09So let's not waste time.
28:10Shall we just build it from scratch?
28:11OK.
28:12Not wanting to give up on his French oak top...
28:14I'll just look at it there.
28:15..and ignoring Fernando's request of building a bar from scratch,
28:19Xavier has one last lead to follow.
28:21There's loads of outbuildings here
28:23and we haven't even checked in any of them yet.
28:25Er...
28:27It's locked.
28:28We're going to check all the last of the outbuildings
28:30because there are a tonne
28:31and we haven't even been in all of them yet.
28:33There might be something, there might be like a beam or something,
28:35or I don't know, something falling over
28:36that we can try and reclaim.
28:38And there is one more outbuilding to check.
28:41The Chateau's old bread oven.
28:43Yes!
28:45Oh, my God.
28:47OK.
28:48This would work.
28:49This is exactly what we're after.
28:51Guys!
28:52They have it!
28:56There's, like, bits that we can use
28:58and there's, like, loads of them.
29:00There's enough for all of it.
29:02And I found it in there and it's weathered.
29:04We can, like, clean it up.
29:05Yes.
29:06Do you think it's gonna...
29:07the pallet wood is gonna sustain the weight of this?
29:09Yeah.
29:10It will because it's, like, it's on its side
29:12so it's got a lot of strength that way.
29:13I mean, pallets are designed to kind of hold, like,
29:15really heavy things.
29:16OK.
29:17What's happening?
29:18I found a bit of oak.
29:19Is that really?
29:20There's oak in the outhouses.
29:21Seriously.
29:22Let's go pick it up now.
29:23Xavier found some very old wood available here on the side.
29:27Here.
29:28Look.
29:29There's loads of it.
29:30There's literally loads of it.
29:32There's, like, all these gnarly, flat on one side.
29:36Like, how good would that look?
29:39On the end of a bar.
29:40I have a lot of reservations
29:42because this wood doesn't look in the right state.
29:44They are really, really old.
29:46Some of them might be rotten.
29:48They are just all sort of shapes.
29:50And we don't have the time
29:52because the countertop,
29:53we have to build it quickly.
29:55There's so many of them
29:57that it's hard to even pick one.
29:59If it's no good, I'm going home.
30:02That's just how it is.
30:03I'm prepared to take that risk.
30:05I am just a bit pessimistic.
30:06I think we can do this.
30:08He guarantees he can get something out of it.
30:10Taking full responsibility.
30:12Xavier, if this doesn't work out, this is on you.
30:14I can cry.
30:15I can literally cry.
30:16I've been chasing this down from Normandy
30:19for like two days.
30:20Yeah.
30:21And it sat right there under our noses.
30:23Oh, mate.
30:25I was living and dying by this piece of oak.
30:28Oh, God.
30:30I was running around aimlessly
30:33trying to find pieces of oak
30:35that were right under my nose the whole time
30:37because it didn't just look right where we were.
30:40I've been up, I've been down, I've been sideways.
30:43I cried.
30:45Cried.
30:46Actually cried.
30:47So that was great.
30:48Super embarrassing.
30:50Oh, darling.
30:51No, it's not embarrassing.
30:52It's too late now.
30:53Recently engaged, they have plans to get married at the Chateau.
30:57But no, they face an uphill battle to make it to the grand finale.
31:01I haven't done anything on this scale before, but we've done, you know, bits and pieces,
31:06bit of wallpapering.
31:07Oh, jeez.
31:08Right.
31:09Let's get on with the other bits, eh?
31:10Yeah.
31:11Of course, I was quite scared of both my enthusiasm and the actual physical pieces of oak.
31:17But I'm willing to stake this on it.
31:22We're now halfway through this renovation challenge.
31:25Teams, can we gather outside, please?
31:28Oh, what?
31:29Oh.
31:30There they are.
31:33Looking worn out.
31:35Very tired.
31:36It's time for your first petite challenge.
31:39So if you'd like to follow me to the workshop, where you'll find out what you'll be doing.
31:43Let's go.
31:44Oh, gosh.
31:45Welcome to your first petite challenge.
31:59Each week, I'll set a couple of petite challenges to test your ingenuity, creativity and ability
32:05to work against the clock.
32:07All of which are key traits in running a property of this scale in France successfully.
32:12Earlier today, I was rummaging around in the cellar and I found these wonderful wine bottles,
32:21which got me thinking, every good entertainment space in a chateau needs a wine rack.
32:27So today, you have two hours to design and manufacture a wine rack that holds 12 bottles of wine or more.
32:35Twelve?
32:36You'll be competing in your individual pairs against your teammates to try and win this challenge.
32:42Right.
32:43Interesting.
32:44Once the time is up, I'll be selecting a winning wine rack from each team which will take pride of place in your finished entertainment area.
32:53Ooh.
32:54Happy?
32:55Yes.
32:56Excited?
32:57Yes.
32:58Right.
32:59I'll stop whining on and let you get started.
33:00No.
33:01You've got two hours from now.
33:02I've got an idea.
33:03Yeah.
33:04I like the idea of being for quite a simple design.
33:06Pegs.
33:07Why pegs?
33:08I mean, it's just an idea.
33:09Not too complicated because I'm worried we could potentially run out of time.
33:13Maybe it's impossible we can make a wine rack like this.
33:16A wine tree.
33:17No, I don't like that.
33:18For four bottles of wine.
33:19Four, really?
33:20Try and make, like, a castle tiny.
33:22Top like that.
33:23Three, sorry.
33:24Yeah.
33:25Exactly like this, but this one, when you cross like this, this will fit in here.
33:30That is going to be much harder to make, but this is pretty simple.
33:34Yeah, that's what we've got two hours to make.
33:36Put some, like, nice colour at the back.
33:38What are you struggling with?
33:40I do not know what you mean.
33:42I'm going to just draw it for you, yeah?
33:44Shall we get going?
33:45Yeah.
33:46Yeah, that's it.
33:47Let's have a look in the shed.
33:48We've never, ever done anything like this before.
33:50No.
33:51So, um, this is going to be really interesting, this.
34:01Four determined pairs are competing in a renovation showdown
34:04for a chance to win a chateau in north-west France.
34:08Do we want it that thick, or do we want it that thick?
34:10I think it should be thick.
34:13As part of their first challenge, renovating the chateau's garages
34:16into entertainment spaces.
34:18I've now given them just two hours to battle it out
34:21in their first ever petite challenge.
34:23Feels a bit weird going off against anyone else, doesn't it?
34:25I know, it's a bit sad, isn't it?
34:26Because we've all been working together as a team,
34:28and now we're going to see each other.
34:29To design and create a wine rack using materials from the workshop.
34:33So how are we going to get this assembled together?
34:36So this we can cut, and then grooving can fit in together.
34:42Just practice trying to take it out.
34:44How high is that then to measure it?
34:4642.
34:47That in profile, which means I have to cut 45 degrees.
34:51Making pegs that are strong enough is going to take too long,
34:54as we're obviously doing more of a garden-y theme in our room.
34:56So we thought we could do something that looks a bit like a tree.
34:58So we've got basically like a central piece,
35:00and then we're going to have little branches coming out.
35:03Xavier and Tash are not the only ones
35:05thinking about incorporating the chateau's garden.
35:10The plan is to make a tree-like wine rack.
35:14So this would go upright, and the wine bottles will sit in it this way.
35:21Our mint pair are making sure their design will hold 12 wine bottles.
35:25So the idea is half a cut on first wood,
35:28the other cut on the other wood.
35:30They're going to interlock together and sit together.
35:32This is the most I've ever seen you measuring...
35:35What are you talking about?
35:36You measured everything wrong in our house
35:38and I had to remeasure it, remember?
35:39That's not true.
35:4260.
35:43Edward and Nella.
35:45They've cracked all of us.
35:46Yeah, they're really doing well.
35:48That's the halfway mark, everybody.
35:50You've got 60 minutes left.
35:51One, two, three, four.
35:53How long's it taking you to do one whole?
36:00I just need a thicker one.
36:01This looks interesting.
36:02Hello.
36:03How are we getting on?
36:04Quite well.
36:05I think we're OK.
36:06I think we've got a vision in mind.
36:08What is the vision?
36:09Can I have a look inside your brains, please?
36:10Yes.
36:11Can I have a look at our dodgy skirt?
36:12This is essentially a shelving unit with three shelves with a little lip on the front.
36:16Yeah.
36:17That basically sums it up.
36:18I got that from the sketch.
36:19What that sketch doesn't show is a bit more detail at the top and that might evolve as we carry on the process.
36:27It may look like teeth at the top.
36:29You had me until you said about it looking like teeth at the top.
36:32I know.
36:33That's slightly worrying.
36:35Did you get a vibe from Max then?
36:37I think he feels it was quite good until you mentioned teeth.
36:40What just happened?
36:41Did it snap?
36:44Has it snapped?
36:45Yeah.
36:46What are we going to do?
36:47What are we going to do?
36:48We are really covering ourselves in glory right now.
36:51We need to consider that as well, each side.
36:54This looks interesting.
36:55Can you explain yourselves?
36:57Yes.
36:58So, this is old floorboard.
36:59We made these cuts here in the middle.
37:01So, it will be solid, structurally sound.
37:05The weight of the waters will settle down.
37:08Yeah, whatever you'll help.
37:09Yes.
37:10Are you confident?
37:11Yes, yes.
37:12So, we need to pack on.
37:13It's going to be finished?
37:14Yes.
37:15OK, good luck.
37:18I had a piece of pine that snapped in two.
37:22Ooh.
37:23That's the way the grain goes, isn't it?
37:24Yeah, I didn't think about that one.
37:25This is the joy of upcycling.
37:27I know.
37:28And chateaus.
37:29It is.
37:30Nothing is plain sailing.
37:31Talk to me about the general design.
37:32So, the design is that it's sort of based on a kind of a tree.
37:34So, our idea was to have kind of this central column and then to have some sort of chevron pieces
37:40running along it that will hold a bottle each so that you've got 12 bottles in like a long line that you could put on the wall or make a nice display out of.
37:47OK.
37:48So, referring to nature that you'll see through those doors.
37:50Yeah.
37:51So, I'm going to leave you to it because you need to spend a lot more time on that to be the winners.
37:55Exactly.
37:56OK.
37:57Good luck.
37:59See you later.
38:00We're making a wine tree.
38:02This is the trunk and we're just going to drill holes in there wide enough for the neck to fit in and these become the branches.
38:10Ow!
38:11It's making me nervous saying this everybody but you've got 10 minutes to go.
38:23Right.
38:24I think it's going to work.
38:25Better out.
38:26Better out.
38:27Now, the plan is going to come into a question.
38:35Space them out.
38:36Yeah.
38:37We've got 72.
38:38Yeah, I'll do it.
38:39I'll relax, relax, relax.
38:40They've got to be even space.
38:41OK.
38:42We've got it.
38:43It definitely fits.
38:45We wanted to have a slot to hang the wine glasses.
38:48So, we found this.
38:49This was a leftover bit.
38:50We're just trying to figure out how we can make it work.
38:54Careful.
38:58It's nearly one o'clock, everybody.
39:00You've got just five minutes left.
39:04Should that be back in there?
39:05No, that's all right.
39:06Two hours flies.
39:07I know.
39:08I told you that.
39:09Put it together.
39:10Just drill it in.
39:11It's fine.
39:12It's all right.
39:13It's all right, yeah.
39:14Three.
39:19Ready?
39:20Yeah.
39:22Base.
39:23Do we want a base?
39:24I don't know if we want a base.
39:25Oh, cut out a little crest.
39:27Yeah.
39:28Three minutes left.
39:29Let's go.
39:34Right.
39:35This was...
39:37Well, we have the structure.
39:41Yes.
39:42Well done.
39:43That's it.
39:44Time up.
39:45Tools down.
39:46It's time to show me your designs.
39:53Elizabeth, Sam, talk me through your design.
39:55I think one of the key words is rustic.
39:57Affectionately calling this the Turret Teeth Tower of Wine.
40:04This is where it falls apart and there's like a river of old wine.
40:08Why?
40:09I'll pass them to you.
40:10I'll pass them to you.
40:11Yeah, thank you.
40:12I'll stand back.
40:13Well, I think that is a success.
40:15You've done it.
40:17You've done it.
40:18Right.
40:19Edwin and Nell.
40:20You've done it.
40:21You've done it.
40:22You've done it.
40:23You've done it.
40:24You've done it.
40:25You've done it.
40:26You've done it.
40:27And we've done it.
40:28And we've done it.
40:29And we've made it floor standing so no matter where you are in the chateau you're never
40:30far away from 12 bottles of wine.
40:31Yes.
40:32Have you tested to see if it actually works?
40:33No.
40:34No.
40:35Do you like to?
40:36Do we have to?
40:37OK.
40:38Here we go.
40:39Starting at the top.
40:40Interesting.
40:41It's like Jenga.
40:42I'm just going to take a step back.
40:45Oh.
40:46Oh, no.
40:47That one's not gone in.
40:49Oh, no.
40:50No.
40:51It's not happening.
40:52We got overconfident.
40:53No.
40:54No.
40:55I'm not going to do it.
40:56Lessons learned?
40:57Lessons learned.
40:58OK.
40:59Right.
41:00On to the next.
41:01Fingers crossed it holds more than one wine bottle.
41:03Damn.
41:06Fernando, Saurab, how have you done?
41:08The design here is simple and robust and functional.
41:12But what's this additional part?
41:13You just can hang glasses there and whenever you feel like, just pour your wine and drink.
41:17Can we see just how robust it is by putting the 12 wine bottles in it, please?
41:21Absolutely.
41:27And as you can see, you have room for one more.
41:30Pleased?
41:31Yes.
41:32Very pleased.
41:33Very pleased with our...
41:34Tasha, Xavier, you had a few early disasters, but you seem to have created something.
41:39How did it go?
41:40We had a really lovely design and executing it was not as simple as we expected.
41:45But visually, does it represent your original design?
41:48Yes.
41:49Yeah.
41:50So you're pleased with how it turned out?
41:51I think so in the end.
41:52Shall we see if you're pleased once we throw those 12 bottles of wine at it?
41:56Yeah, let's give it a go.
41:57Give it a go.
41:58Let's give it a go.
41:59Go for the other side, because I can't reach that side.
42:00There we go.
42:01There we go.
42:02Two...
42:03Instead of going anywhere, I'm borderline picking it up and shaking it around.
42:08That does deserve a round of applause.
42:09Let's go.
42:10And you do look pleasantly surprised.
42:11Fantastic.
42:12Well, I guess it's time to go and make my decisions.
42:15Wow.
42:16You were slamming those in for you.
42:17Cool.
42:18Now, firstly, Elizabeth and Sam, I'm not too sure about the tooth story, the castle, but
42:34what you created is structurally sound.
42:36You've used reclaimed materials, and it successfully held 12 bottles of wine.
42:40So well done.
42:41Edward and Nell, I think I'm as disappointed as you are.
42:45That big tree with all the leaves coming off of it, unfortunately for you, I can physically
42:50hold more bottles of wine in my two hands than the one bottle that that entire contraption
42:55could support.
42:56So I'm pleased to announce the wine rack going into your entertainment space is Elizabeth and
43:05Sam.
43:06Aww.
43:07Thank you, sorry, Alan Atwood.
43:09Fernando and Saurab.
43:11I think your use of reclaimed materials and those really lovely finishes help your design
43:16stand out.
43:17Tasha and Xavier, halfway through that challenge, I thought I was going to see a load of kindling
43:22on the table.
43:23So well done for pulling it back.
43:25I'm actually really struggling to decide with your team.
43:29The wine rack going into your entertainment space is Fernando and Saurab.
43:40I am thrilled that our creation is going to end up in that ring.
43:44Yeah.
43:45Can't believe it.
43:46I'm really happy.
43:47I don't know.
43:48I don't have words to describe.
43:49We are over the moon.
43:50It has really boosted our confidence and we really think now we can win this week's challenge.
43:54The world.
43:55Go on then buddy.
43:56I would absolutely love to be here next week.
43:59I'd love to get a step closer to the possibility of winning the chateau.
44:03But I think the competition is really strong.
44:05We are gutted to have lost the petite challenge.
44:09The time pressure you've got here is unreal.
44:11Looking forward to a good night's sleep and cracking on in the morning.
44:14Yeah.
44:15It's not very good under pressure.
44:16Just might have melted a little bit there.
44:18We are obviously disappointed that we lost but I'm so proud of us because that was hard.
44:24We never ever have to do that at home and like have something put together in two hours.
44:29We now have to regroup and really focus tomorrow because it's a big day.
44:34Next time the pressure is on.
44:36Countertop is a massive risk.
44:38I've put myself on the line.
44:39Two teams are going head to head.
44:41I hate this thing you know.
44:43It's a massive shame.
44:44As they continue to battle it out.
44:47Over grass and this stuff it'll just snap the casters off.
44:49For a chance to win this stunning French chateau.
44:52Time's up.
44:53Tools down.
44:54Oh man.
44:55Who will impress.
44:56It was an incredibly tough decision.
44:58And which pair will be sent home.
45:00The pair leaving us today is.
45:04Fresh D zest.
45:06Fake Days.
45:08Nice fifteen.
45:10This is the first choice that I put with a criminal action.
45:13It felt like you couldle to pit me into this.
45:15The험ề.
45:16Cuz a vegetable.
45:17Fake Truth is a very simple choice.
45:19But I want you to blast out.
45:21I'm rewrite again.
45:23vediamozo.
