12:39I am Danielle Wright
12:40The content editor of Girls United
12:42And we're gonna kick things off with a bang
12:44For our first conversation
12:45We're gonna talk about all things black fashion
12:47With an amazingly talented creative
12:49Who's carving lanes and opportunities for others to follow
12:53Please join me in welcoming Black Fashion Fair founder
12:56Antoine Gregory
12:58Hello
13:08Hello
13:09Hello
13:10Hello
13:11Yeah
13:12All right
13:15How you feeling?
13:17I'm good
13:18I'm happy to be here
13:19Love that, love that
13:20So, jumping right in
13:22In comparison to many black designers and brands that are available today
13:27How would you describe what black fashion looked like prior?
13:32I think right now in fashion black designers have a lot more opportunities than they've had previously
13:39I think we see a lot more black designers at the forefront of their brands and like being successful
13:45I think prior really to 2020 you couldn't really go into a retailer and buy black designer goods
13:53So, now you can go into like Saks, Nordstrom, Neiman's or Essence and you can pick up a black designer
14:00And I think I've been very fortunate enough to be like a part of that through black fashion fair and helping designers get into retail spaces through our obviously through our e-comm but also like navigating those brand partnerships for them and navigating those contracts and black fashion fair has been like kind of super instrumental in that change of being able to like actually buy black fashion fair
14:21Being able to like actually buy black designers and buy so many different versions of what black fashion could be
14:28Exactly for sure and we're definitely going to get into all of that later on in the convo
14:32So, the world came to a stop with the rise of the global pandemic coronavirus or COVID-19
14:39This brought upon a new era where Don't Rush by Young T and Bugsy, Say So by Doja Cat
14:45And Savage Remix by Megan and Sally and Beyonce had everyone turning into TikTok
14:51Which brought on a new wave of influencers and users completely altering the way that we see content creation
14:57So, alongside the spread of COVID-19, you know, the death of George Floyd sparked national outrage in the summer of 2020
15:08But on days that we distanced ourselves from the inhumane murder, we sort of started a blitz of accountability for brands that weren't showing up to the people who buy, flaunt and style their products and their pieces
15:24You know, this gave, you know, a monument to booze for Telfar who became like the millennial Birkin
15:31There was also Brandon Blackwood, you know, and his TSR totes were nearly flying off the shelves
15:37What were your thoughts watching this sort of black renaissance happen in real time?
15:44While the world was bringing on one of the most significant political issues to the forefront as well
15:51I think it was super, I want to say it was exciting to see, I guess, a lot of my friends are black designers
15:59So to see them have opportunities that they otherwise would not have had, I think it was really important in that way
16:06And it's unfortunate that it took someone obviously passing for that to happen
16:10Right
16:12But we were able to really gain some equity in the industry that we contribute so much to
16:18But I also saw it as kind of like a double-edged sword because these opportunities were not going to last
16:26And I think we're three years in and we can see how that's already starting to shift
16:32To where black creatives, black designers of all different types are getting way less opportunities than they were in 2020 and 2021 and 2022
16:41Like we're in 2023 and people are like, okay, what's happening?
16:46It definitely didn't last
16:48So I think it was like also preparing for that in some way
16:53For sure, for sure
16:54So while black designers and consumers at the time and still are fighting for their flowers
17:00We've also seen black content creators holding brands accountable, you know, regarding representation, diversity
17:08And inclusion in fashion, so, you know, from a digital creator's perspective
17:15How do you encourage creatives to find their voice when working, you know, with these major brands?
17:22And really just find their worth
17:24And the respect that they deserve as a black creative
17:28I think we're so used to not just asking for it that we don't
17:32So I think it's important that you just ask for what you believe that you're worth and more
17:37Because the only thing they're going to do is come back and say, hey, we can't meet that number
17:42Or we can't meet that deliverable and then you just pivot from there
17:45But you have to ask and I think we were for a long time not in a space of asking
17:50Just accepting the first offer accepting what they were giving us and now we have a bit more power
17:55To say, hey, this is not enough or I'm not going to do this or like I'm not posting this for this amount
18:01Like we have a lot more power when it comes to that
18:03And I think it's important that brands are building their own communities
18:09Because like when you have that, it's like it's harder for a brand to say, hey, we're just going to tell you what to do
18:14But no, I have a whole community of people, I have a following
18:17And people are looking for a very specific thing and you have a brand DNA, you have a culture behind your brand
18:22And I think that's what young designers need to do even more is like build that community
18:26Love that, love that
18:27Love that, love that
18:28And speaking of community, getting into a little bit Black Fashion Fair
18:32So, you know, can you elaborate a little bit on, you know, this initial idea that you had
18:40And how it's grown so much from when you first started?
18:44Of course
18:45I launched Black Fashion Fair in 2020 with like 21 Black designers and artists on our e-com platform
18:54And we also had like a directory of like over 300 Black designers that you clicked on their name
19:00It took you to their website and it was shoppable
19:02And for the, this was like truly the first time where you could go to any
19:07You could go online and say, hey, I want to buy a Black designer
19:10I put them all in one place
19:12And I think from there, obviously like retailers reached out like, hey, how can you help us get Black designers?
19:18And that's why you see designers at Saks and on Essence in Nordstrom
19:21Because we did a lot of that work, bringing them to one place with that
19:25Through Black Fashion Fair through our directory
19:29So that's really great
19:32So I know that, you know, you are really one of the ones that's really leading this Black fashion space
19:39And, you know, we're all human
19:42And I'm pretty sure you have had moments where you might have felt imposter syndrome
19:46I know that's something that I always talk with my peers about all the time
19:51So, you know, how do you find ways to really manage that and focus on what you're doing
20:00When that sort of doubt starts to creep in a little bit?
20:04No, yeah, I think it's important to have a good network of friends
20:09Because we all go through imposter syndrome and we go through it together
20:13So like having a good network of friends has helped me to say like, hey, you're doing this work
20:19It's hard and sometimes you don't get enough credit for the work that you do
20:23But like we believe in you, we see you, we trust in your vision
20:26And that's always been super helpful when I'm just like, dang, I don't know if this is going to work
20:30Because clearly it's working
20:32But I'll still like, I don't know if this is working
20:34Yeah
20:35And then like when I see like the designers that I work with
20:38I'm like also the brand direct at Theophilio
20:41And we won Emerging American Design of the Year at the CFDA Awards in 2021
20:47And many black designers do not win those type of awards
20:52And I think Diddy was the first black man to win one
20:56Telfar won one
20:58And we've won one
20:59Oh
21:00So like that's like super, it's amazing
21:03And so like I get to like look at all that work
21:06And like the accolades I see the designers that I work with get
21:10And I'm just like, okay, like it's working
21:13Yeah, yeah
21:14And I still have those moments of just like, how long will it work for?
21:17Like, am I going to run out of black designers to support?
21:19Yeah
21:20Those are real thoughts that I have
21:21But my friends have held me down
21:23They've packed packages with me
21:25They've been on photo shoots with me
21:27And they haven't asked for anything but friendship
21:30And I love that
21:31Like literally having, you know, like really just always there for you friends
21:36And building a community is like so essential, so essential
21:40So getting into a little bit of trends
21:43Whether you love them or hate them, they help the fashion realm go round
21:48What are your thoughts on trends and what are some trends that you're currently loving?
21:54I mean, when it comes to fashion, I feel like black culture, black people really lead the trends
22:01Whether it's like truly everything, like black fashion and black culture is like truly just like fashion is built on the backs of that
22:13So like if we weren't as creative as a people, I think if we didn't go through so much as a people
22:17We wouldn't have like all these cool ways to dress and express ourselves
22:21Because we spent so many years not being able to
22:24So now when we have the chance to do that
22:26We do in such a beautiful way
22:28And I think people get excited by that
22:30But I mean we both have on sequined pants right now
22:32Yeah
22:33This was not planned
22:34So I love doing like, I'll do like a statement trouser or a statement top
22:41Oh yes
22:42But never twice
22:43But never like both
22:44Like it's always one or the other
22:45So like there's some calmness in the outfit when you're looking
22:48Like even right now like we're like it's the 50th year of hip hop
22:52And I'm wearing like this FUBU jersey that I designed in collaboration with FUBU
22:56They're on blackfashionfair.org if you want one
22:59Yes, they come in many colors
23:01Easy to style, yes
23:03But just like oversized, it's boxy
23:06Like people love that
23:07Like we're in like an era of just like being comfortable
23:09But I would love to like, I think the next thing I'm trying to see is like us goes like
23:14Just like over the top, like luxury
23:17Like even right now with like jewelry like everyone wears like the dainty jewelry
23:21I would love to like see us going to like being big over the
23:24Doing big over the top door knockers and chains
23:26Like I want to see that era come back
23:28So
23:29Yes, I would love to see that era come back too
23:31Love that
23:32And then winding down to our final question
23:35So as fashion continues to move forward
23:38You know with black creatives like Pharrell recently with Louis Vuitton
23:42I actually read recently that Future is supposed to be a part of LVMH
23:46And yourself, you know with the hottest market out right now
23:52What excites you the most about the next generation as they head into the fashion industry?
23:58I think because there's so much opportunity now
24:02Just like being to be a part of the industry
24:06I think for so long we weren't even allowed to be a part of the industry
24:09Other than setting the trends or like, you know, being in the background
24:14And now like we're at the forefront like we're taking credit for what we own
24:18And I think younger, the younger generation, they have a lot more ownership over the artistic production that they're creating
24:26Like they're owning it, they're on TikTok, this is mine, this brand did that
24:30And they're like very honest and that's what I love about like what's happening now in fashion
24:34But like there's so much access now that we didn't have
24:38Yeah
24:40Even like when I was growing up and I went to like I went to FIT
24:42And I couldn't just Google a list of black designers
24:46Like it just didn't exist
24:48And now you can Google a list of black designers, accessories designers, handbag designers
24:52And it will be so many names because like now we have that access, we have those resources
24:57And like brands like Brandon Blackwood like
25:00And he's an amazing designer and to see how much success he has had in this short period of time
25:05Like that's something to aspire to
25:08We didn't have the black brands to aspire to
25:11We had FUBU, we had Sean John, we had Rockaway
25:14And at the time like that's when we were younger
25:16Like those brands, aside from like maybe FUBU
25:20Like they weren't really a brand that we bought into anymore
25:22Yeah
25:23So like we stopped buying into the culture
25:25And I think now we're kind of like getting back to like supporting
25:28Getting back into it
25:29Yeah because like you have to
25:30Because like you see like if we're not supporting our own
25:33No one else is going to do it
25:34And like you can go out and buy these other labels
25:37And they're going to mock you in their displays
25:40They're not going to put black models on a runway
25:42They're not going to hire black people on their teams
25:44But those are the brands that us as a people
25:46We choose to continue to celebrate and buy
25:50When we really should be celebrating and buying
25:52Stuff that black designers are putting out
25:54Because it's just as good if not better
25:56Exactly
25:57And with that being said we are ending on a word
26:00Thank you so much Antoine for joining me today
