00:28and in addition to that we are going to be closing out today's creator programming with
00:37our forever the blueprint talking about hip-hop so how many of you guys love hip-hop
00:42how many of you guys love hip-hop
00:47all right much better much better so today i have a very very special guest with me
00:56she is the princess of new orleans
00:59did y'all hear that princess
01:03and her name is 504 icy girl so can you guys please give a warm welcome to miss 504 icy girl
01:14hello how are y'all today how are you doing i'm good i'm good yes thank y'all so much for being here
01:24i'm so grateful to be here first of all and everyone looks so beautiful and i feel good
01:30all right so we're gonna have just a little nice intimate conversation with it being 50 years of
01:37hip-hop what we're focused on and what girls united is focused on as essence's gen z platform is what
01:44does the next 50 years look like and so with that we really wanted to make sure that we were really
01:50tapping into what we think is the next 50 years of hip-hop so i just want to know how has hip-hop
01:59been an important driving factor in your life and how you really got into making music
02:05hip-hop has always been a part of my life because my whole family loves music
02:11i remember hip-hop for as long as i can remember
02:13i started making music around five to six years ago after you you know when you're like 18 19 and
02:21you're just trying to figure out what you want to do and i was just exploring with the things that i
02:25really loved and i realized wow i really love rap music i i think i want to try that so something
02:34that i love my whole life i just looked into it a little bit more and it ended up clicking and i
02:39realized it was a passion yeah so i loved how you said something that i think probably a lot of people
02:45in this room can really relate to is being 18 19 and not knowing what you want to do so has there been
02:53anybody that has helped you pushed you to find that and find who you are and also what you're becoming
03:01definitely my mom first of all i'm so blessed to have a mom that has always nurtured all of my
03:10interests because i have a lot of interests i'm one of those people so thankfully my mom has always been
03:17like you know if you like something just see more about it she has always pushed me to figure out more
03:22about my interests and not just my mom but other people in my support system like my boyfriend poppy like
03:29my grandma i've honestly been blessed with a support system that listens to what i like and was and has
03:35always been like oh well go do more of that like you know what i'm trying to say yeah well speaking of
03:41moms i got my mom in the audience right now can you all make a little noise for her she hates attention but
03:48all right look at her she's anyways back to it moms are very important and what was one of the biggest
03:55things that you maybe learned from your mom that you take with you as you have been building your
04:01career as you're also looking to you know the future my mom has taught me to always get through
04:09a good storm like it's always going to storm everyone goes through bad parts in life in their career
04:16and everything it's not always good like my mom taught me to always keep going no matter what happens
04:23and she taught me to always put that bet on yourself like i'm gonna bet on myself at the end of the day
04:30i love that so as you can see and as we've seen everywhere women really dominating music um
04:39where or have you ever felt like being a woman in hip-hop has been hard or tough or you know the double
04:49standard that sometimes women get like what are your thoughts on how people perceive women artists
04:56um the pressure do be on like i talk about it almost every other day how like damn the guys they could
05:07just do it and it'd be cool but like us women we gotta make it look a different way for people to
05:13actually want to pay attention so um it's just a lot of pressure on me in general and not just even
05:21me my whole team because like you know i don't have a very don't get me wrong i'm feminine but i also like
05:29you know my masculine side so sometimes it's a battle because like um my manager was just telling me
05:35some things just come with being a female artist and being a female in general yeah and it sticks with
05:40you and it's like unsaid rules that you just have to abide to but then i feel like if you get if
05:49you're strong enough to your core you could be like no like i don't have to do that like so being a
05:57woman in rap not only are you a woman in rap but you're also from the south they're from new orleans
06:02how has the city you know helped you built you up um and how are you really repping for new orleans and
06:08how has the city shown that to you the city show up for me all the time like people in my when i'm
06:17in my city it feels like i'm in a kingdom like people been really tapping in doors opening for you
06:24yeah people have been showing me more and more respect and i'm just so grateful to see that
06:29especially for my peers you know what i'm saying i think my city has been doing a great job at uplifting
06:36not just me but a lot of artists in general in new orleans we've been sticking together and putting
06:43each other on the map like because we don't have that many people above us to do it that's like want
06:49to do it but lately i feel like everyone has just been holding hands like hey we doing this together
06:54like yeah and i actually that's really evident i think and and kind of as we were you know putting
06:59this together is one thing that we really wanted to focus on was making sure that essence has been
07:05in new orleans for years i think we're coming up on like our 30th festival um next year but we always
07:13question right how can we support you know the city of new orleans in in a much better way in a way
07:18that isn't just we're just here you know this weekend um but how do we really make sure that we're
07:25tapping into the city and a big part of that has been creatives and and working with creatives and
07:30so working with you has been you know amazing and seeing you come out and you're just so excited and
07:35like it's so refreshing but it's so refreshing to have that with with artists um so my next question
07:42really is just how do you really work to build 504 icy girl like you have the hello can we get a little
07:51hello hello hello the best way i build is to collaborate i love collaboration i love to work
07:59with artists of all different forms from my stylist to my hair stylist to other rappers like i love working
08:08with other artists because they inspire me on just a different level that i can't even explain like
08:14and i think that's how i keep growing and building with collaboration do you have a dream collaborator
08:22ah it's really hard um on a smaller not i don't want to say smaller but on a new orleans tier
08:28my dream collaboration is big frida on a new orleans tier but on a national like a nationwide tier
08:35it would definitely be of course beyonce like though like everybody wants to work with yes
08:40how many beyonce fans we got
08:45all right this happened none of y'all like beyonce because i didn't hear anything from you guys
08:52so who do you think has really laid the blueprint for female rappers in all honesty i believe nikki
09:02minaj has laid the blueprint okay barb the the main generation of female rappers of course it goes
09:09deeper before her but i'm i'm in my 20s so like to me wait how old are you i'm 25 okay so like for a 25
09:18year old i feel like what yeah 90 98 98 okay i'm a 96 baby so okay all right who you think i i do think
09:27that nikki has contributed a lot to rap i love nikki i think she's a great artist i think she's really
09:34created the pink print um you know and i think that there's also right but you also need to acknowledge
09:40also like the lil kim's um you know the foxies the trinas that each one of them brought their own
09:48you know flavor their own style you know their own own thing whether it was fashion too like i think a
09:53lot of people forget how hip-hop isn't just necessarily about the music but it's about what
09:58it's also been able to change really the minds of people the way people dress you know the way people
10:04talk so i love how you do like the hello because that's something to me that is like each artist
10:10has kind of something that's like really unique or that they do that's unique that you know i think
10:14is is really cool and just how so many different facets of everything is just really about and goes
10:22back to hip-hop and you know whether it's people dress the way they dress with like dapper dan so like
10:29i think it's really cool like you bring a unique style and how long did it take you to do your hair like
10:33that baby bangs do my hair so she's like the greatest professional in hair care down here so it
10:40takes her between two and three hours depending what we're doing i love how you said it's more than
10:45just the rapping when it comes to hip-hop because that's what i like to tap into more styling and
10:51hairstyles to get my point across as well so oh i love that point so unity in hip-hop especially with
11:01women do you think it can be achieved do you think we're far from it what do you think the status of
11:06that currently is do you think we're fragmented and if we are how do we bring that together i think
11:12anything could be achieved so of course like and it is being achieved just might not be at the levels
11:18that everyone is hoping for but it's happening every single day and i think that it it needs to be
11:25done in all of hip-hop especially women and i like to say that i contribute to it my first tour i took
11:34all female rappers that i was really fucking with on it so i really like you said you was really
11:38fucking with or are there some huh you don't have i say you the ones that you were really fucking with
11:42the ones that i was genuinely fans of you know what i'm saying like now i don't know clout shit but the
11:47like people i really listen to you know what i'm trying to say like i'm really into things that come from
11:52the heart yeah with no ulterior motives like i love that so you think that there can be unity hell
12:00yeah i i do deep down i do because like i said i i'm one of those people that i feel like anything
12:05is possible yeah so if anything is possible why the why is that not possible and something that has
12:11been really bubbling up in music as well has been people you know owning their masters you know having
12:19the right management having the right team around them what are your thoughts on also as you're
12:24building your team how you select people to be a part of your team and help you contribute to
12:30you and where you want to go in the future of 504 icy girl that's a great question first of all the
12:37number one thing when i look to build my team is a strong mind i don't like people who are easily
12:44persuaded like i like people with really strong intentions they know what they want and they
12:50can't be really don't get me wrong they're gonna take advice but they're not gonna be like oh someone
12:55said this so i'm gonna do this you know i like really strong minds and people who just are wise and
13:02not just who also have that leader mentality even when it's not their turn to be a leader because even as
13:07leaders sometimes we have to follow yeah and so people that can also think on their own can also
13:14challenge you that's amazing so what's the number one trait that you are most impressed with about
13:20yourself i like that i can adapt to any environment and i think being from new orleans gave that to me
13:29yeah and so to really close out how impactful this conversation is i really want to know
13:38as you're thinking and as you're reflecting on everything what advice do you have for your
13:44younger self as you continue working towards your goals and solidifying your legacy i would tell my
13:52younger self that when you first thought to be a rapper do it then because honestly i was thinking
13:58about being a rapper way in high school but i was like girl like what the i was really i was a nerd
14:04like i was really nerdy i was like girl you're going to college like girl we about to do this this
14:09this i just didn't really seen it as a career i would tell myself like no like go start right now
14:15so start yes yes start right now even if it's not the best start it's best to start now and then
14:22clean it up then they keep waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting waiting like yeah and how do you
14:27deal with that how do you deal with feeling stuck or like even imposter syndrome the way i deal with
14:33it for real is to swallow the hard pill of yes you can fail but if you don't at least try you ain't even
14:42gonna fail it's just gonna be nothing like you might as well try as well try it's a hard pill to swallow
14:47but once you finally get over that it becomes so much easier and this is now for real my last question
14:54we have this theme called forever the blueprint because we know that you know black women are the
15:01blueprint in so many different areas music art anything you name it how are black women forever
15:09the blueprint to you i think we are forever the blueprint because we have always been the nurturer
15:16the one the provider and i feel like since since day one we've been providing so much
15:20that it will always be a cycle it's never going to end it's like a circle and i think that's so
15:26beautiful and i don't i don't mind it as long as it's in respect i love being the blueprint okay and
15:34so how can we keep up with you how can everybody in here support you what do you need from everybody
15:40to help you get where you want to go i just love the acknowledgement me my team and also my peers we work
15:48so hard to get better and better at our craft and even a simple just acknowledgement or i want to
15:56see a stream but not even not even just that like just being like yeah i know them and they doing a
16:02thing it means so much like than what people realize yeah i like being noticed by especially people from
16:09my city yeah and where can people connect with you where can they keep up with you i better see some
16:15phones taking out right now um my name is 504 icy girl it's spelled a little weird uh it's 504
16:23i-c-y-g-r-l it's a it's like a username i'm kind of a gamer so like think of it like a playstation
16:30username i'm on everything apple music spotify instagram everything so any projects you got coming
16:38out or anything what you said can you give us any projects coming out anything yes i literally just
16:44dropped the project a few weeks ago the the posters are all over convention center boulevard
16:49it's called laid and it's all about keeping up with yourself honestly like as a woman as a person
16:55not even as a woman she's being late as hell all the time i just dropped it a few weeks ago so that's
17:00fresh but i have some singles coming out real soon with a lot of my new orleans peers that i can't wait to
17:04drop okay well we can't wait to listen thank you so much thank you and hello hello
17:34you
