00:00Plans have been announced to demolish the Ridings Shopping Centre in Wakefield and replace it with a large-scale redevelopment of the city centre.
00:10Wakefield Council says it intends to buy the ageing mall and transform the surrounding cathedral quarter into a new area with homes, leisure facilities, culture venues and public spaces.
00:21The local authority describes the project as a long-term regeneration scheme expected to take place in stages over 10-15 years.
00:31The first phase is being supported by £17.9 million of government funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, covering the purchase of the centre and early planning work.
00:43The price being paid for the Ridings has not been made public, but the Council says it reflects independent commercial advice.
00:53Proposals also include demolishing several 1960s residential tower blocks, which are currently owned by social housing provider Vico Homes.
01:02Around 200 replacement homes for existing residents are planned in the initial phase, with the Council saying support will be provided throughout.
01:11New facilities being suggested for the site include a public square, library, museum, cinema, green spaces and car parking.
01:19The announcement follows decisions by major retailers, including Marks & Spencer and Primark, to leave the centre.
