00:00So about 11.30pm last night, the Nowra Police vehicle was involved in a pursuit with the
00:08Kia Cerreto in the streets of Nowra.
00:11That pursuit only went for a short period of time and then police disengaged from the
00:16pursuit due to safety reasons.
00:19About an hour later, the vehicle was again sighted.
00:23This time it was sighted in Tarara, which is about 5km outside of the Nowra area.
00:29So in the general area.
00:32At this time the pursuit was re-engaged, the police activated their lights and sirens with
00:39a clear indication for the individual to pull over.
00:43That individual was wanted by police, so there was just reason for the pursuit to occur.
00:51However, a short period of time after the re-engagement of that pursuit, that vehicle hit some significant
00:58speed and again a short period of time down the road collided with the tree.
01:03Police were on site immediately, rendered assistance, as did the ambulance.
01:09He had to be extricated from the vehicle and he was flown to Sydney Hospital.
01:16From my understanding, he's currently being treated in the Liverpool Hospital.
01:20His condition is listed as being critical.
01:24We understand he's sustained multiple fractures, but he is receiving the right treatment at this
01:29stage.
01:30We understand that there was an independent investigation conducted by investigators attached
01:45to the Lake Illawarra Police District.
01:47There's oversight by the Professional Standards Command as well as the Law Enforcement Conduct
01:52Commission.
01:53There will be a thorough investigation that will look at all aspects leading up to the
01:58pursuit and up to the collision and the reasons for why it occurred.
02:03Do we know how fast they were going when the second pursuit happened?
02:09At this stage, I'm informed that it was excessive speeds, that's in excess of the speed limit.
02:15However, that is subject to the investigation and no doubt that will come as an answer once
02:21the investigation is completed.
