Alexandra reviews All American
Transcript
00:00I was so obsessed with it. I binge watched in like easily a week or so. Hey, Naturally Curly World. I'm Alexandra and today I'll be doing a watch and go where we wash our hair while we review our favorite series or movie. Today I'll be reviewing All American, which is actually based on a true story about a former NFL football player, Spencer Playsinger. And it's really about his life growing up in South Central LA.
00:27He has the code switch of, you know, his everyday lifestyle within attending Beverly Hills High and playing on their football team so he can attend college and have a great future for himself.
00:57Like crazy good football players. All right, fellas, show me something.
01:02Ooh, the place just isn't who I am. It ain't me. You decide who you want to be. We need to get rid of it.
01:10Go back to Crenshaw. I'm playing with a bunch of guys who don't want me.
01:13You can make something of your life beyond just football. Football is my dream.
01:17I want a life better than the one I've been living. I got to fight for every damn step I take.
01:24And that's when you play for something bigger. Because when you do, you'll be unstoppable.
01:31Today I'll be using a few of my favorite products and I'll be starting off by washing my hair with the Sasha Pure Healing Shampoo,
01:38which I really, really like because it's a very gentle, moisturizing shampoo, which is actually pretty rare nowadays.
01:45It's just one of my favorites. And then the Two Girls With Curls Conditioner, which is lavender and grapefruit,
01:53which smells amazing and it's very, very moisturizing. So I'm going to go wash my hair and I'll be right back.
01:59Okay, so let's get into this plot, y'all, because it's deep.
02:05They did a great job of like showcasing, you know, the gang violence, Crenshawness in general.
02:12And speaking of Crenshaw, like right when, right when the series opens, it's literally playing Mitzi Hussle's soundtrack in the back.
02:23And I just really, I just really appreciated that because that really shows you, like they really did their research to really share a very real and raw story that needs to be told.
02:34And this was also, whenever I saw it, it was, it happened to be like the same week that Mitzi Hussle passed.
02:40So it was a lot of feelings, a lot of emotions, but it basically just really put you, it really placed you in Crenshaw, like you were there,
02:47like you were really seeing all this unfold right before your eyes.
02:49So I'm going to rake in one of like my forever holy grails, kinky, curly, not today.
02:57You can use it as a ligament and detangler, even like a moisturizer.
03:02And it literally works for every single hair type.
03:05This is actually based on a true story.
03:07And they really did their homework and really made sure that they worked with this NFL football player to be sure that his story was told and it was accurate.
03:20So, yes, I definitely appreciate them really sharing the real life stories that people experience that isn't always portrayed in the media,
03:28such as code switching, family secrets and relationships, racial identity, gang and gun violence.
03:35Basically, real life things that people, people really do go through and it's not a facade.
03:40So Spencer James is from South Central LA, which is like the hood.
03:44And he is going to an all white, very prestigious high school in Beverly Hills.
03:50So he has to constantly straddle these two very different lifestyles.
03:55And to be real, he really doesn't feel accepted in either one of the places,
04:00which is interesting because he's from Crenshaw, but whenever he gets to Beverly Hills,
04:06his old homeboys are kind of like, nah, you too good for us.
04:09We don't want you over here anymore.
04:11But then when he gets to Beverly Hills, obviously, he's like an oddball.
04:16And people just don't really know, you know, about him.
04:19They just know where he's from.
04:20I'm going to use next, the Aribes Styling Butter.
04:24Now, usually, I don't use too many, I don't use too many butters because they're kind of,
04:28they're kind of heavy for my hair.
04:31But I've used this one recently and I really like it.
04:35I like how this isn't too thick and honestly, I don't need a ton.
04:40So, you know, in the beginning, whenever, whenever Spencer Farske gets to Beverly Hills,
04:45it is some tension, it's some drama, it's some mixed emotions and people really just
04:50don't know how to take him just because he's so different than most of all the other students
04:55at Beverly Hills High.
04:56They really try to like get him kicked off the team, the team, the teammates, you know,
05:01they really push his buttons and really just try to challenge him in different ways on and off the field.
05:06But the real team, the real, real team is what happened to your daddy though?
05:12Like, how did he just leave and then towards the end of the series, he pops back up
05:19and like wants to be a part of his life again, which is just really weird.
05:23I'm going to use one of my favorites, which is the Camille Rose Curl Maker.
05:28And this is super moisturizing and makes my curls pop.
05:35His dad disappeared for years, y'all.
05:38Like, he was gone from like the time he was eight till about like 17.
05:43He just disappeared on him.
05:45So then he comes back in the picture and like wants to be an author again.
05:49And that just came out of left field because for the longest, like Spencer James do nothing
05:56about his father and he just popped back on the scene.
05:58Leading up to the end of the series, they definitely kind of leave off on like this cliffhanger
06:05of what really happened, why did he leave, and then like, who is Spencer's real dad?
06:15So I am going to plop my hair down the middle.
06:18And then I'm going to add a little scalp oil.
06:24Next, I will apply the Righteous Roots scalp oil.
06:29And then I'll probably even put some on my hand too, just to scrunch out the crunch.
06:35With this, you really don't need too much.
06:37And you're really just raking it through.
06:43Now I'm going to add a little bit more to my scalp.
06:49That's basically all American.
06:51I'm eager to see season two because I'm trying to figure out what's really going on.
06:58So I feel like all the tea's going to get spilled in season two, and that's really what
07:02I'm waiting on.
07:03I would definitely give this like a 9 out of 10.
07:07Like I said, they did their homework and their research, and it was very, very thorough, relatable,
07:14realistic.
07:16And I really appreciate them talking about tough topics on camera.
07:19And also too, like this is a former NFL player sharing his story, sharing his truth, and
07:26really reminding people that you can write stereotypes.
07:29You can be more than a football player.
07:31I'm going to go ahead and use for our 15 minutes.
07:38That is All American.
07:40Season two will be coming out very soon.
07:44Like I said, I'm waiting.
07:46I'm eager, and I'm so excited for it to come out.
07:48But I'm curious to know if y'all have seen it.
07:52If you have, definitely let me know your thoughts in the comments, because I want to know if
07:58y'all have seen this or not, because it's been out for a few months, but I just got to
08:02Netflix.
08:03Thanks for watching, and be sure to like, share, and follow us, and we'll see y'all next
08:07time.
08:08Bye.
