00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, it's Devery, and this is Watch and Go, the series where we wash our hair as we review our favorite shows or movies that we've seen lately.
00:08The one that I'm going to talk to you about today is called Little Woods.
00:11It's a movie starring Tessa Thompson and a whole bunch of other dope people.
00:16It's actually directed by a black director.
00:21What went wrong last time when you got caught?
00:26I forgot to be scared.
00:28Because I liked it too much.
00:35You ever think about leaving?
00:38You're so close.
00:40Please stay out of trouble.
00:42What if I lost my insurance?
00:44The pregnancy and birth is going to be about $8,000 or $9,000.
00:47Closest place for an abortion, she said.
00:49Where is it?
00:50Hundreds of miles away.
00:52I'm sorry.
00:54It's been a rough time for a lot of people.
00:56Trust me, if you saw the house, you'd pay us to keep it.
01:00Where are you going to get the money, Ollie?
01:03I'll figure something out.
01:04I'm going to do a simple refresh routine because I'm lazy and I washed my hair last night.
01:12So, you know, me, I wash my hair once or twice a week, depending on how much I go outside.
01:19I'm using the DevaCurl No Poo Decadence Conditioner.
01:24It's very moisturizing and thick.
01:26It's been my go-to for probably like four or five years.
01:30I have my trusty refresh bottle since I don't want to actually, like, immerse my hair fully into the water.
01:38I have my Cubidoo, which is a steamer that can refresh my hair, add some more moisture and help it retain more of a, just like volume.
01:48Because I'm not really big on curl definition.
01:50I have my oils.
01:51I have my Righteous Roots, which is like a very popular one in the naturally curly community.
01:57And then Mix It Up from Beleza Natural, which is dope.
02:01They are a Brazilian-owned brand.
02:03This is another one, Lavender Mint Curl Refresh Foam from Paul Mitchell.
02:08Paul Mitchell's been around for a long time.
02:10They're very big in the salon world, so it smells very luxurious.
02:13It's a foam, which is something that's somewhat new, like, for someone with my hair type.
02:19But it's for curly hair.
02:21I used it.
02:22I like it.
02:22So I'm going to stick with it.
02:24And then I have my wet brush.
02:26This has been with me through thick and thin, literally.
02:31And then I have my Shea Moisture African Black Soap Detox Mask with Bamboo, Charcoal, all that good stuff.
02:40All right, so the first thing that I'm doing is using my Curl Keeper H2O bottle to refresh my hair a little bit.
02:50And I will tell you about the movie.
02:52So it stars Tessa Thompson.
02:55She is dope.
02:56I will admit, like, I think I've kind of been sleeping on Tessa Thompson because I didn't realize, like, how talented she was.
03:05And I do think that she was kind of perfect for this role.
03:08She plays a character named Ollie.
03:12You know, Tessa Thompson's black.
03:14And she has a half-sister named Deb, who is a fairly unknown actor.
03:20So I'm not sure what her name is in real life.
03:22But she's a white woman.
03:24And they play sisters.
03:26And they're based in North Dakota, I think.
03:29I don't know where North Dakota is.
03:31I don't think I'll ever have a reason to go.
03:33So don't come for me if, you know, it's a flyover state.
03:36I'm not sure.
03:36And Tessa Thompson is an ex-drug dealer.
03:40And just super random.
03:42But, you know, it's like one of those stories where it's like you feel so hard for the main character.
03:48Because she's just honestly just trying to make a way for her family.
03:53Their mother died.
03:55Their mother left them this house that they can't afford.
03:58They're about to get evicted.
04:00It's the family house.
04:01Because Tessa Thompson is really trying to get away from that lifestyle.
04:05But at the same time, she just can't.
04:09She can't.
04:09Because it's hard.
04:10It's a very, you know, a systemic thing.
04:13And so she's trying to break free of this life where she was making really good money
04:19and being able to support her family through illegal endeavors.
04:24But she can't.
04:26Let's see.
04:26Let me do this real quick.
04:27So there's a scene where Tessa Thompson is trying to get an interview.
04:39She's on probation.
04:42And, yeah, it's just, you know, she seems like she's on the right path.
04:46And apparently she used to sell pills.
04:48And she, I guess in North Dakota, maybe it's close to Canada.
04:52Because in the movie, the whole point is that she used to do this across the border.
04:58So she's really trying to resist that life.
05:02She gets enticed by a deal where she would have to drive some more pills across the border.
05:08She takes the person up on that deal because he's offering her a lot of money that she needs.
05:16I applied the oil after the water.
05:19This oil that I was using is the Mix It Up from Beleza Natural.
05:23And it's a humectant oil.
05:25And it's raining outside.
05:27So it's perfect for that.
05:29Just kind of trapping in the moisture that I do have so that when I go out,
05:34hopefully there's not more, like the cuticle doesn't raise more.
05:40And for the foam, the Paul Mitchell foam, I'm actually just going to coat this over my halo.
05:46So there's a scene in the movie that was very controversial, apparently.
05:52But it was regarding abortion.
05:57And Deb is the sister who is pregnant again.
06:01She already has a son.
06:02She can't afford, you know, to have a baby.
06:06They go to the, she goes to the clinic.
06:08She finds out how much it would cost to have a baby.
06:12It would be like 8,000 bucks minimum.
06:15And she was like, we just, we can't do that.
06:17And they show like a scene, this scene where it's just very, it's simple.
06:21Like she's just laying on the bed in the doctor's office.
06:25But she's like, you know, she's about to do this thing.
06:28And it's just like, it just strikes a chord as a woman because you're just like, wow.
06:34Like it's powerful.
06:35It's impactful to have to make that decision on the basis of finances and, and take away everything else.
06:42And I feel like that's something I don't really see a lot in cinema.
06:45So I really appreciated the director and the writers, you know, making that like a very visible thing in the storyline.
06:55Because that's important.
06:56I am adding the Beleza Natural gel cream.
07:01So yeah, I want to keep my shape, but I want to maintain control of it.
07:05I want it to stay in place.
07:07Another part of the movie though, that was really good, Ollie, was on the, she was on the interview in a diner for this new position that she really wanted.
07:17Because she was trying to leave North Dakota and go make a new life.
07:20And then her old business partner, he found out she had been selling pills in their area.
07:26He didn't like that.
07:27So he walked to the diner, he snatched her up, they met in the bathroom and he like, basically, like they had a little, not a scuffle, but some, a confrontation that got really bad.
07:40Ollie has to leave the bathroom with the straight face and go handle business at, do, you know, do her interview.
07:47But it's like, she just got roughened up a little bit, you know, over something else.
07:53So like the dichotomy of those two things, like that was very relatable because that's how life is also.
07:59Like we, we wear a lot of different hats and we have a lot of different faces to different people.
08:04And a lot of times, like for me, it played on like just my compassion.
08:08Because a lot of times, like we don't know when someone shows up as a certain person, like we don't know what they just came from or who they, you know, what kind of situation they just came from.
08:19We just see them as they're presented.
08:20And I, I just thought that that was kind of interesting.
08:24That was an interesting touch.
08:26So if I had to rate the movie, 4.9 stars.
08:29The cinematography was amazing.
08:31It was directed by a woman of color.
08:33It was produced by women.
08:35Just the whole story is so relatable.
08:36The actual script, this really pointed to a story that is all too common, especially in America.
08:43And you know what?
08:44I'm going to give it five stars because honestly, I'm telling you, it's that good.
08:48Let me know what you think.
08:49If you see it, I believe that, you know, it's on different streaming platforms.
08:54So, um, and it's also in theaters in certain areas.
08:57So go check it out.
08:58It's called Little Woods.
08:59Let me know what you think about my hair and my routine, you know, all that good stuff.
09:04Like, subscribe, follow.
09:07Don't dislike.
09:08Like.
09:09Bye.
09:09Bye.
09:09Bye.
09:10Bye.
09:10Bye.
09:10Bye.
