00:00I think you could play a game that's like Shonda Rhimes or Olivia Pope and try to
00:04guess who said the phrase because she speaks in the exact quick way that
00:08Olivia does. Hey Naturally Curly World it's Christina and this month's book
00:16club pick of the month is Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. Everyone knows who
00:20Shonda Rhimes is from Shondaland and Grace Anatomy and Scandal and how to get
00:24away with murder. Year of Yes is a really positive way to start out your
00:292017. Here are five things I learned from Year of Yes, how to dance it out, stand in
00:36the Sun, and be your own person. Lesson number one. The point of this book is to
00:41say yes to the things that scare you. Not yes to everything, not yes to your
00:46friends texting you on Friday night saying let's go out, just yes to the things that
00:50scare you. It's all about your personal growth. Saying yes to things that scare
00:55you can be as small and simple as wearing a bold lip or it can be bigger
01:00things like public speaking or letting your walls down and being vulnerable.
01:05Lesson number two is to stop dreaming and start doing. While you're dreaming
01:11someone else is doing. Shonda says stop worrying about your dreams, just hit the
01:17floor running, start doing. If you're a new graduate that means you may just have to
01:21get a job that isn't your passion but it's a job and it pays you money. So one
01:25of my goals is to blog more this year. Oh, thefujifiles.com, come look at it. So I
01:31just started publishing posts even if the photos aren't exactly the way I want them
01:35to look. I'm just starting with the blog and I'm getting back into that. Lesson
01:38number three is stop striving to be Toni Morrison or whoever it is that you
01:44idolize, just be yourself. If you have been spending hours and lots of money trying to
01:50make your hair look like your crush's hair, just stop. Every curl pattern is
01:56unique. You probably have things that that person's hair can't do and that
02:01applies to every area of your life. Refocus all of that energy into being
02:06yourself. Lesson number four, it's okay to shed negative people from your life.
02:11Year of yes doesn't mean say yes to all of the people in your life. It means saying
02:17yes to the ones that you get that positive energy from. Think about the
02:22people in your life and if they really are good influences on you or if maybe
02:27you have a narrative about where they stand in your life that isn't really
02:32accurate. The people that you want to keep in your life want to see you succeed.
02:36Lesson number five is say yes to playtime because it only takes 15 minutes. That
02:42might mean pouring yourself a glass of red wine. It might mean dancing in front of
02:47your mirror home alone. It might mean hanging out with your dog. For Shonda it
02:52was spending 15 minutes playing on the floor with her little kids. She actually
02:58changed her life in one year. I think this book is important for women to read
03:02because she is really good at showing different kinds of women and different
03:09versions of what success looks like. I would give this book a four point seven
03:16five stars out of five. I don't think it's a perfect book but I do think it's
03:21exactly what you need to read in January to kind of kick your butt and set your
03:26mindset for 2017. Shonda Rhimes Year of Yes is our book club pick of the month. If
