Transcript
00:00Hi Naturally Curly World! I'm Gerilyn and I'm Christina and today for our first
00:04episode we're gonna be talking about something you've probably never even
00:08thought about. Why is your hair curly? So if you have naturally curly hair then
00:15you probably already know if your hair is wavy, curly, coily, if your hair is
00:20high porosity or low porosity, but you might not know why any of this is the
00:27case with your specific hair type. So we're here to help you figure that out.
00:31First we have to start with the basics. Regardless of any curl pattern or any
00:36texture there are two main components you always have to remember and that's the
00:40hair shaft and the follicle. This is Rebecca and these are Rebecca's shafts.
00:49They're the strands that we all have coming out of our head and then the
00:53follicle is the little hole that's in your scalp. The shape of your hair
00:57follicle is a major factor when determining your hair texture. Curly hair
01:01has an oval follicle shape whereas straight hair has a round shape. So if
01:06you have a perfectly round follicle then your hair is gonna be perfectly straight
01:11and then the flatter, the oval, the curlier or the coilier your hair is gonna be.
01:17Another way your follicle affects your hair type is the way that it sits in the
01:22dermis which is your scalp. So the follicle of straight hair grows in a
01:27straight down tunnel whereas with curly hair it grows at an angle. So if you've
01:32ever wondered why is my hair growing out or up instead of down that's why. Curliness
01:38is also determined by the number of disulfide bonds that are actually on your
01:42hair strand. And also where they are on the shaft. So if you have straight hair and
01:47the disulfide bonds are evenly distributed all along the shaft and then if you have
01:51curly hair then the disulfide bonds bunch up on one side. I wish I knew this when I
01:58was growing up. I spent so many hours so much of my life asking like why me? Why
02:04doesn't my hair look like my dad's side of the family's hair? They have straight fine
02:09hair. It looks like the hair in the magazines. Why was I cursed with this hair
02:13that grows out and is so much thicker? And of course my hair has changed over time
02:17but I just I wish that I knew that no matter what I did or what I prayed for
02:22what my hair looked like was determined by things inside my scalp that I was never
02:28going to change. Yeah absolutely I'm kind of in the same camp where when I was
02:31growing up I would use a relaxer right? But if I had just known like it's not
02:36really your hair it's your follicle and your hair is going to grow out curly I
02:41probably would have been like I don't want to relax sir I want to see what my
02:45curly hair looks like so I'm glad that we have this information now. So those are
02:49the three reasons why your hair is curly or straight or coily and if you want to
02:54see more stay tuned for the next episode because we're going to be talking about
02:57hair type. See you next time. Bye!
